@Abu: Initial price of W960 when it hits our local stores will be more than N80k.
@pxt: I bought the P1 today for N50.5k. Not too impressed, want to buy it?

It is a lie! Not impressed? Can you give details please?
Posted by brym!
@AYA: I am just lacking the usual enthusiasm that should accompany such purchase, maybe I should have waited for the W960 or Xperia.
The P1 came with a 1gb card, a very nice gesture from SE because I was expecting a 512mb card. I am getting used to the keys already, certainly not as bad as I thought. More later as I warm up to the device.

Thanks pxt, I am already a member of both.
Seriously, anybody interested in the P1?

@brym!: I am, but only if an instalment payment option is available. As you know, I just spent N39,500 on a P990i.
Posted by brym!
@AYA: 2 instalments; 50% now, balance within four weeks. If that's ok I'll send it thru your wife tomorrow.
Posted by pxthomas
@Brym... I think you would be doing this forum a favour if you told us the reason for your action(s). I am sure that phone is not more than 48 hours old.

Way to go for me is W960, not P1. I just like my w950 too much to part with it and I only knew after one hour of using the P1.
Posted by OluYom
@brym: About 30 minutes with the P1i, and I am loving it already. Of course, coming from the under-powered P990i, the P1i shines! I am yet to play with those keys yet. Still customizing it to my taste and transferring my files.
More later.

I'd say the w960 is about the same as the p1.They've got almost the same features, except for the 8gb memory storage in the 960.
If you want the walkman experience then 960 is the way to go, cos its a music-centered handsets-so maybe ie why bryn prefers the 960.
But for me, i'd prefer the p1

My one-month old P990i is up for sale: N35,000 only. Anyone interested (or know someone who is?)

These i-cell guys i keep seeing in the paper that are supposedly SE's official distributor in naija, does anyone know where thier shop is in lag? Has anyone gone to any of thier shops?
I went looking for a bluetooth keyboard at Buyright located in City Mall, Onikan and saw an i-cell store on my way out. I actually thought i-cell were into wholesales and not retailing. I was wrong. The i-cell store sells directly to end users and boy their quoted prices were exhorbitant. There the P1i sells for N62,000. They don't have W960 yet but you can preorder. The price? ...N99,000.
I am beginning to get this feeling that the W950 will be with me for a looooong time. The prices of other brands of phones in stock were also exhorbitant at the store. These ridiculous prices could be because it is located at a high-brow mall.

@Aya: Is HRW on your P1 fast? my boss just replaced his lost unit, and the new one has painfully slow handwriting recognition. The old one was ok, but not this.

I don't use it by default, but I turned it on and tried it out: it was smooth and fast.
Has he checked to see what firmware version he has? The CDA list is at http://uiq3.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/CDA/P1i for quick reference. A firmware update may be what he needs.

@brym: Fleet communications have the W960 on offer at 65k!!!

@I called Fleet and a male attendant told me that the W960 sells for 55k. It sounded too good to be true so I waited a couple of hours and called another of their several numbers; a female attendant answered and gave the price as 85k. For the fun of it, I called a third time and another attendant (female) gave the price as 80k negotiable.
So I picked my W950, gave it a kiss and promised it my undying love for another six months.
Posted by OluYom
@brym!: That was a joke! So what was the accurate figure for the W960? Apparently, no-one really knows!
Posted by brym!
@AYA: Each of them took permission to consult the price list and came up with different prices. I remember negotiating for the price of a phone with a personnel of Fleet Comm in 2006. After agreeing on a price, I despatched a staff to pick it up. When he got there he was informed that they ran of stock the day before. A very unserious bunch.
I prefer buying from PTV and Dax Tech anyday.
Posted by ambyzown
@Brym: Abeg help me call Dax Tech, make we know the real price. If its reall N55k that will be a very good price for W960i
Posted by brym!
@amby; I called Dax Tech earlier, they don't have it though they asked me to call back later because they were expecting some new phones. I'll call back this morning.
Posted by Rishone
Good Morning/Afternoon/Night to my Fellow Nigerian Esatonians.
Posted by brym!
@amby: Dax Tech does not have the W960. Affordables Comm at Computer Village has it for 75k. Fleet Comm reps seem to have sorted themselves out, so it sells for 79k.
Posted by ambyzown
Thanks Brym, 75k is still a bit too rich for my blood. I guess that by May the price will have dropped to like 50k then I can think of buying. like u, I'll stick with what I have till the price drops.

Glo published their 3G tarriffs in newspapers yesterday. My copy was blurred... anyone with a clean copy to tell us? I think I saw something like 30k/mo for browsing. I am checking Gloworld.com
Here they are!

Is there any need to request for new settings or are they still the same?

@coolapostle: Thanks for the Glo 3G Plus heads-up.
If the information on that page is correct, can anyone confirm that Glo charges prepaid lines 20-35k per kb for GPRS?
Posted by mamba
For the unlimited 3G @#15,000 what happens when you exceed the 3gb limit?
Do you get disconnected or what?
besides, there is no info on coverage yet.
Posted by brym!
@AYA:Yes, Glo charges 35k per kb for peak and 20k per kb for off peak as per postpaid.
@mamba: welcome back, we missed you. I guess when you exceed 3gb you will billed at pay as you browse rate( 20k to 35k per kb.)

Thanks brym! I know about postpaid (I have a postpaid line). But what I'm asking about is PREPAID. The info on that 3G tariff page gives the impression that PREPAID are charged those same 20-35k per kb.
Posted by brym!
I was at Glo HQ today and can confirm that for now 3G services are only available for postpaid subscribers. And to use any of the packages you are required to pay a security deposit which is about 100 % of the monthly charges.

Okay guys, Glo 3G is alive and running. I had my line activated yesterday and was able to browse late last night. I have a post up at First time browsing on Glo 3G.
This morning, I have run more detailed tests, and I will be putting up a follow-up article with screen-shots and details of which settings work (its all official, so no problem going public with it).
Please go through the articles and let me know if you have any questions or any tests you'd love for me to run. I have the P990 for only another 48 hours and then its off to the new owner.
You may also be interested in my other article, GSM Customer Care Officers: When Ignorance is Bliss, which essentially explains why customer care officers say one thing when in reality its not so. Can you imagine anyone working in the mobile industry insisting that the P990i is NOT a 3G phone?

Crazy Ignoramus... all of them! Even at Glo HQ they informed me that 3G is only for postpaid subscribers.

@brym!: The folks at Glo HQ are no better off than those elsewhere. I remember my experiences with the HQ people when I was having Glodirect activated on my contract line years ago.... Like you said, crazy ignoramus they are.

Hello AYA, a few questions please;
1. what is the process and requirements to subscribe to Glo's 3G services?
2. How fast is it?
3. What is the tariff?
Posted by mamba
I'm more interested in coverage area cos I happen to be in Akure which I believe might not go live on 3G at all.

Hi artwales, all your questions are answered in the two articles: First Time Browsing On Glo 3G, and Putting Glo 3G Plus through its paces.
I don't mean to be huff, but its just easier for everyone to read the articles, then ask questions that are not dealt with in the posts. You can post your questions here after having gone through the articles.
Besides the OTA activation steps I put in one of the articles, you can simply walk into any Gloworld and have your line provisioned. If you want a contract package, of course, you'll have to do the paper work and pay some outrageous fees
Cheers!

So apart from Aya, who else is 3g enabled? and what are your views? According to Aya's article, you do not have to be on the post-paid plan to use glo's 3g services. None of the three networks have active 3g here.
P990i is not a 3g phone??? what a laugh. I wonder what the criteria for picking customer care personnel is.

I am 3G enabled but the signal keeps disappearing every now and then, so I have not really tried it.

Hello AYA, couldnt help but wish one could make payments for your domainstandard services online via interswitch debit card, now i have to start looking for the a GT Bank branch. By the way, just placed an order with ref #92.

Its a shame really. Interswitch was asking for N150,000 to implement that on our site! That's robbery in my opinion.
Hopefully, things will change. We are looking at implementing it via eTransact instead. We'll see how it goes.
Thanks for the patronage!

I just saw it on This Day newspaper, Celtel now offers BlackBerry. Offer is restricted to postpaid customers only. Who knows they may roll out 3G soon...yes even without official launching of GPRS.

I thought we were going to enjoy some months of free 3G browsing before these guys start billing.
