And if you think we are backwards in mobile data, read what this European thinks of mobility in the 'mighty' USA .
Excerpt...
"Mobile handsets aren’t fashionable in America. They are tools. They’re nothing better than a slightly enhanced walkie talkie (in fact, many of the handsets on sale actually are glorified walkie talkies). They’re stored on the hip in Wild West gunslinger holsters. They’re consulted only for the purposes of utility. They are simply a utility. The Brits, the Italians.. (list continues) have a relationship with their handsets. It’s through their handsets that they deliver, manage and live their lives. Take away the mobile phone from an American and he or she will be mildly inconvenienced. Do the same to a European (for example) and they will rip your fingers, arms, legs and eyelids off until you give it back."

You are right brym, the mobile industry here in Europe is far more advanced than it is in the US. Virtually everything revolves round the mobile phone - Banking, business, sports, shopping,tv,movies, music, dating, etc.
The US has a lot of catching to do.

PNF POLL: HOW WOULD YOU FEEL TO BE WITHOUT YOUR PHONE(S) FOR ONE YEAR?
Coola's response: No problemo except for the hitches that will occur as I plan for my wedding, (my fiancee will be upset.) The loss will not affect my life THAT much.
Posted by ambyzown
@Coola: that would be rather unthinkable for me, as I have built most of world around my phone.
Communication
Messaging
Day planning
Reminders
The list goes on.
I see the lack of free internet has taken its toll on the number of posts here. Sorry guys Celtel has wised up and sorted out its billing system. I'm back on full internet, but its no longer free.
Have a swell day all.

@easydee: Yes; celtel gprs is limited to some cities, outside of which you are on your own.

@Aya: I'm dying to hear what informed ur switch to sonyericsson's P990i and what ur impression is considering its price. What happened to ur e61i?
Posted by brym!
amby, how are you coping with the M600 keypad? I'm considering the P1 with similar keypad. The virtual keypad of the W950 is too small while the flushed keypad is very temperamental...it drives me crazy sometimes.
AYA, can I have a feel of your of P990? The Keypad maybe be better. I'll pick it from your wife in the morning and return it before 4pm same day?

@Brym: If you remember, the keypad was the main grouse I had with the M600i initially, but after getting used to the handwriting recognition feature, I rarely use the virtual nor physical keypad

I sold my E61i way back in November when Reltel offered a Treo 700p for N20,000. It was a rare opportunity to own and use a Palm (I'm on the lookout for WM offer too).
While I had the 700p, I fell in love with touchscreen again. The combination with a QWERTY keyboard was heaven. Shortly thereafter, someone literally begged me to sell him the 700p, and I did.
The P990i is currently the most value for money device on the market. For N39,500, I got a brand new device with the last but one firmware, and it was very stable. Still, I updated the firmware to the latest. No shutdowns. Very stable.
In addition, the small keys are very usable, even with my huge thumbs.
I am quite satisfied that I spent my money well.
@brym!: Give me a call or send SMS if you are serious about having a feel. That may not be this week though. I paid Starcomms to renew my internet subscription last week Monday, but till today they have not. I understand there are subscribers who have been waiting for activation for over 30 days! Anyway, that means that for now, the P990 is my primary connected computing device.
I'm typing this on it.

Please someone report to the Esato overseeers that someone has taken over AYA's profile and is now impersinating him!!!! How cn the real AYA talk abou the P990 like that? Nooo. This na fake AYA. Who has the number of NAFDAC?
Posted by brym!
@abu: Why NAFDAC? and not EFCC or ICPC or INTERPOL?
Posted by abubakar
NAFDAC cos this is a fake product! If it doesnt say AYA its not AYA! Im too lazy to go thru past posts to qoute anyone, but i do remember AYA being on the P990 hater squad. Anyhow, it goes to show that we are all not rigid in our phone convictions. Some of us make good decisions as they need to be made.
Changing topic, is anyone following the run-up to th US elections? I am and im really jazzed up with hopes forObama. Not cos he's black, but cos he is antiestablishment.
Posted by OluYom
I hacked AYA's profile and find joy in destroying his hard-earned reputation. Isn't it just great?
NAFDAC? Do they have any computer geeks who can deal with online identity theft? I doubt that even EFCC has. Sorry, but I'm getting away with this

The question also goes to anyone who has any info.
@Cool, Do you know how much xtra am being charged for getting at least a N100 worth of MTN recharge card from my UBA ATM Card?

No personal dealings with them, butthey are about the largest distributor and retailer of PC products and services in Nigeria. They also have operations in other West African countries. If you are looking for big, they are big.

@coola: That is the reason i have been skeptic about collecting the atm cards for all my accounts. I've only collected one and i've never used it. These banks always have thier hidden charges.
@aya: now u are among the the P990 clan, post up any good apps u are using. how long did ur update take.
@all: my poor T630 has finished its last leg and is on its way to the phone shop in the sky. im thinking of getting W850i but im still open to suggestions. i normally would have saidf SE phones only but due to AYA'S P990 purchase i have to show some similar flexibility!

To:
1. Download the SE Update Software to laptop
2. Install the SE Update on my laptop
3. Download the firmware update
4. Install the firmware update on the P990
...all took 2 hours on a Starcomms EVDO connection.
Freeware on my P990:
- GDesk (standby customisation)
- Jzip (zip and unzip files)
- BibleReaderUIQ3
- CellityFreeSMS
- Opera Mini 3
- Opera Mini 4
- Swiss Manager (RAM and file management)
- Agile Messenger
- Stris 2 and a few other games

@AYA: Lucky u! My problem is on getting the firmware. I've been online for over two hours just to get it but always get messed up around 50% - 80%. Need to get a faster connection. My mistake was not to get it while i was in abuja. Could have taken advantage of the evdo there.
Still waiting for some advice on my phone selection.

In SA we're so used to the dismal performances by our football teams that no-one even contemplated suicide when we were knocked out. It was almost an act of mercy to spare us a heavy pounding which we had avoided in our three games.

I already have the update service software on my computer, and so it took me about 50mins to update my M600i
I take it your budget is within the 30-35k range seeing that you are already considering the w850i. Other phones in this price range would be Nokia 6300, E65, SE w950i (4Gig memory, no camera) K800i.
So go online and compare these phones to determine which suits your need best.

@coola: my only 2 pieces of advice i have is:
1- remember that u are planning for married life, not the wedding. dont break the bank to make everyone else happy then be miserable after everyone has gone home.
2- the typical advice everyone i know gives at a wedding, one word. PATIENCE!!!
@AMBY & AYA: as my P990 is still in excellent condition i dont need a "big" phone like W950 (haba amby, its going for 60k+!!!) i have gone online to check phones out but not all models out there are available here, and its good to hear about the phones from actual users. for now a phone that has a good enough memory for either snapping or music (2gig should do the trick). the phone should be small so i can lug it around with my other phones. 3G would be a good extra, especially if we have a situation of two service providers offering awoof services simultaneously!! (,yeah, yeah.... i know im dreaming but it can happen! think of of it..... MTN and celtel giving free 3.5 g services for 3months straight while they are getting thier act together. imsure the post here would quadruple instantly. )

@pxt: NFA will always get their share of the blame. Berti played more friendly matches than any other Nigerian coach, in the process he tested a wide range of players but selected a bunch of uninspired players. The man committed great tactical errors in all our matches ... the guy's expired!!!
@Abu: The W950 sells for less than N28K.
Posted by abubakar
@brym: Are you sure u are not confusing the prices of the W950 and the W850? Abi is it a "Made in China" phone?

@Abu: I've been using the W950 for 5 months now and I bought it for N33.5k. It was selling for around N28k before Xmas. It is scarce these days (since the new year) and the price has gone up. I'll call tomorrow to know the current position of things. I am dreaming P1 these days, so I am open to good price offers for my W950.

@chuksy; I felt bad reading that. Bad that my cherished Naija is being rubbished again because of these scammers. I wish there's a way to link the EFCC to set that chap up and arrest him. I guess this must be the same chap that advertised some cheap phones in AYA's site more than a year ago and gave a fake a Ikeja address.

This new romance of SE with Windows Mobile... I am waiting to see how it plays out. But the X1 does seem like a device I would love to carry around. Oh, minus the sliding keyboard. I'm wary of moving parts (hinges, swivels, sliders, etc) on smartphones, because I use my devices extensively.

The
X1 looks kinda cool. Abi?
@Abu: W960i is not available yet in Naija, and when it does appear on the market, it will sell for more than 70k W850i is even more expensive than W950i its a bargain purchase if you can find one.

But, boy! I had a really good laugh reading the posts. Even later in bed, I couldn't help laughing when I remembered the case. Meanwhile, I don't feel ashamed about being a Nigerian. We WILL have the highest number of saints and crooks in heaven and in hell!

@amby: are u sure it isnt available? Have some guys in lag claiming they have one for 66k. Was planning to get a colleague to check it out for me. Anyhow if the iphone could get here so quick and get unlocked in record time, any sim free phone should be available.
These i-cell guys i keep seeing in the paper that are supposedly SE's official distributor in naija, does anyone know where thier shop is in lag? Thier address in abuja (in Ceddi plaza) was still uninhabited when i checked last. Has anyone gone to any of thier shops?
