GPRS runs on excess capacity and unused bandwidth. Mtel has the least number of active subscribers and the highest level of dropped calls. It is logical that their GPRS should be fast - so much unused capacity on that network.
Meanwhile, NCC says NITEL fixed landlines have dropped from 400,000 in 2001 to 70,000 at present. Na wa!
Posted by abubakar
The "excitement" about Mtel gprs as coola said is in the speed as well as the price. its better than paying seven times more for a slower connection than is almost as unstable. so far i havent been charged yet.
Posted by ambyzown
Lets conduct a survey here. Everyone should do a networh search and determine if Mtel is still active in their different locations.
In Gbagada where I live, no Mtel signal.
in Benin (GRA and ekehuan Rd.) Mtel signal is available.

MTN Nigeria launches 3.5G (HSDPA)
Posted by ambyzown
Surprising eh?
Has anyone tried it yet?
MTN's website doesn't have detailed info about the product
Posted by OluYom
@Amby: Detailed info? Less than 10 hours ago, the MTN website did not have ANY info at all on the service!
There's no 3G coverage at my end. I'll check when I am at other locations.
Posted by abubakar
For some reason, my phone browser cant go to that MTN link. but are they serious about offering 3.5g? it would be a miracle if it was just 3! i gotta see what (if anything) they have to say.
by the way, no 3g signal in KD. im off for Abuja later. i'll see what is there.

i think its just a publicity stunt..i use 3.5g here in london and the spped on my phone is at least twice as fast than my starcmms internet in lagos. i think its sad that they are hardly any dedicated ISP companies for individual consumers in nigeria..even cobranet only offer 128kbs, i once took a speed test on my n95 and it was 1.1mb....so its illogical to think mtn can provide this service...from what i know technologies mature together....lets hope for 3g first before 3.5g
Posted by Angelgirl
Can anyone check if MTN's MMS is still working am having problems with it since weekend.

Mariwun, its not illogical. 3.5G is only a software modification to a 3G installation, just as GPRS/EDGE are software modifications of a 2G installation.
GloMobile was able to launch straight off with 2.5G for this reason. It isn't a big deal for MTN or anyone else with a 3G licence to start off with 3.5G services. The difference is just software.
Posted by abubakar
@AYA: i still get what mariwan is saying. though it may be only a software difference (though i think there is also some hardware differences) there would definitely be a price difference. and MTN being the cheapskates they are, would almost always take the low road.
anyhow, no signal in Abuja.
Posted by 2tek
well it seems 3g is the issue @ hand now,saw a glo ad in the papers today, iguess they do not want to be outdone by MTN. I see 3g signals here in Ib. Would we have to change sims? i'm not lookin forward to the service sef. cos i'm sure they are using something like 10g in china like this....
Posted by brym!
I just saw the glo ad on telly. What's up Celte?l am patiently waiting for thou!
I don't even know if my 3G phone is already receiving signals or not. I am really not enthusiastic about 3G yet, may be until data friendly Celtel gets on the bandwagon.
Posted by ambyzown
I have been doing network searches for 3G signals since I got into Lagos yesterday, and I have to say that MTN hurriedly made the announcement of a 3G launch so as to be the first to do so, not necessarily because they were prepared for it. So far, glo has the widest coverage, while Celtel is second. MTN takes the rear this time.

@2tek: can i presume Ib is ibadan? dont tell me thats the only town to confirm a signal! it'll be a shame if they dont roll out by new year nationwide.
@angel: i checked the MTN mms but totally forgot to post. its working fine. make sure no one tampered with ur settings.

This has been a quiet week! I thought with all the 3g buzz we would have analysis, debates and down right brawls over the issue by now. Well, yesterday my mtel gprs finally disappointed me and refused to work so i'm back to posting with my mtn. And with my opera mini set in its non- mobile mode it actually does have a higher kb count than its predecessor. But good news! Saw the mtn 3g signal yday in abuja. Will see if its up in kaduna later, God willing!

@AYA: mr green?
well, back in KD, no 3g in sight. wish i had the time to go to the regional office to grill the cc people on why i cant start using thier services as advertised. where are our consumer advocates?
Posted by abubakar
really quiet!
Posted by coolapostle
@Abu, forget KD. ALL the networks will start in Lag, PH and Abuja.
I will only be interested if they have some kind of free trial.
@all I had a fire incident that has kept me busy all week. Just uploaded the pix on facebook The fire wiped out my PC, Monitor, and many clothes. I started hearing that all those who prepare to get married suffer some kind of "attack". Can any confirm?
Posted by brym!
Sorry about that Coola, pls accept my silipas(sympathy).
Whose report do you believe? Wish you all the best and God's protection as you prepare for your marriage.
18th?

@coola: sorry o. Anyway thank God it wasn't worse than that. Of course you should know that the devil and all evil forces always try to forstall the institution of God's word amongst men. But note that I said "TRY" because they always fail.
Goodluck! its D-Day today..... or maybe I shoulda said W-day
Posted by coolapostle
Thanks. The final date is now 1st of March 2008. It was supposed to be 15th of December.... the fire would have occurred one week to the D-Day. This may be my last day on the net... I de go home for the holidays

Sorry Cool, no weapon fashioned against you and your wedding plans shall prosper, in JESUS Name, take care.

Hey guys, has anyone been having problems connecting to the internet using Celtel gprs lately? I've been unable to use the service since Wednesday.
Posted by brym!
@amby: Mine stopped working on Monday evening. Seems like they have yanked us, prepaid subs, off their GPRS services.
Funny, my nephew, a prepaid sub, was able to reconnect by sending 'internetgprs...' to +232. I tried nearly 10 times yesterday but didn't get a response. When it comes to Celtel, I don't understand nothing.
Posted by ambyzown
Yea Brym, so it seems. I too tried the sms to 232 but didn't get a response. But I've found a way to browse. If you're interested, pm me with ur number and I'll text u with the procedure. Any regular PNF member who's interested may also pm me with their number. I'm in the christmas spirit

Sorry guys, I only responded to regular posters to this forum on the celtel stuff.
Posted by dapsycool
Bad bad bad, amby is that why you didn't bother to reply me when i asked.
Public announcement to everyone; activate your celtel sim by sending "mms" to 232 like 10 times, it's free! After you receive a welcome for mms, create another wap profile using the mms settings, it's as free as the air u breathe in. See ya all when another trick comes up

Hey people, how have you all been?
I am currently using the mtn fast link to browse, i pay N14,000 every month for unlimited access. Starcomms just came into kaduna, all you guys in lag, what can you please tell me about starcomms internet service?
Here's wishing each and everyone of you the best. Ciao
How is the dry weather treating you guys? Kaduna at the moment is so cold and dry, i wonder how the other parts of the country is? especially jos. I think december is probably the coldest month.

@Dapsycool: you're such a spoilt baby. Do you know how many celtel staff monitor this forum? and who will in the next few days block this loophole? However, it might interest you to note that I sent you the procedure, but your phone was switched off, cos when I didn't get an sms delivery report, I tried calling you.
Anyway, Happy new year to you all, may 2008 bring good tidings and six months of free 3G browsing in Jesus Name..... Amen
@Abu and Mamba: I've replied
