@ambyzown: You are a funny fellow. Some of us have pretty much said the same thing here on PNF over and over again, but no-one ever seemed to listen.

As I've said before, its a pointless war: buy what meets your need. I'ved used Moto, SE and Nokia over the years, depending on what meets my need per time.

Oh! And don't be too sure it ends the war. Like before, some people just won't listen. Sooner or later, some die-hard fanboys will lock horns again :sigh:

I have observed here on this forum and my office environment that Nokia phone owners change/replace/upgrade their phones more often than SE owners. Is it that SE owners are more content with their phones or are SE phones more durable?

Nokia is fund of churning out phones every other month.....that might be a reason

@amby & aya: my view on the "war" isnt whether one should be loyal to one or the other, but more as a litmus test on if u needed a phone, where would u most likely get what u are looking for. As said b4 (over & over!) no single company covers all markets with thier products. But eg if ur 16yr old nephew wanted his 1st phone and came to ask ur advise, without know all his phone needs, which way would u nudge him?

@brym: i guess SE users are more cost conscience and hence take better care of thier phones. To test that theory, ask ur nokia users whether normal wear and tear made them change or if it was an accident. Third option is whether a newer model came out. Aya belongs to that group. Most SE users have thier phones a yrs plus before they upgrade. It takes me 2yrs plus. (hence i'll be buying the P1 when it costs 17k!!!)

In which case, I'm sure that I'll recommend Nokia - not because I think that Nokia is better, but because Nokia has a wider range of models to choose from, and a greater availability of technical support (repairs, parts replacement, software, etc) here in Nigeria.

Sounds fair enough. But I doubt if everyone else brandishing "bows and arrows" are coming from that perspective.

I've been using it for about 2 weeks now. Quite good. But I upgraded from Beta 4; not 3.1, so I'm not sure if the upgrade will preserve your bookmarks.

sure you can retain your bookmarks. Just click on "save existing data" when installing

The final version of operamini 4 rocks on my HTC Wizard. Very stable, no crashing or hanging like the beta versions. With this app and the new customisable HTC home screen, am no longer selling this WM device. Now strictly for the office while the W950(with 380+ mp3s) goes everywhere with me. Funny, I prefer using Operamini 2 mod. on my W950.

Posted by ambyzown
I agree with u Brym, Opera mini 2 modd on UIQ3 is very good. But I kinda dig the PC-Like view of Opera mini 4. I wonder why their desktop browser doesn't rock this much. The Russians seem to have gone to sleep, no more modded versions from them since 2.2

Opera mini 4 is good, I have been using it as the main browser (over celtel gprs) since it came out. It will certainly overwrite 3.0 or earlier versions, but you can save the existing data as previously suggested. In any case it is a worthy upgrade even if you have to reconstruct all your bookmarks.

Did you guys see an advert in yesterday's papers for Apple iphone? its already available in Naija, and its being sold for a giveaway price of N120k. Has anyone on this forum bought one yet?

Giveaway ko; carrygo ni! They should keep the toy! I wouldn't even buy the Nokia communicators for N120k, not to now talk of an expensive toy like the iPhone.

I haven't really been buying papers for some weeks now. The Guardian is my preferred and they have been on holiday.

No; I haven't seen the iPhone ads, and I'm not likely to buy one anyway.

@brym & co: It should be said that Telkom have committed a $1 billion in starting up a pay-tv and media production operation that will officially launch next year when Telkom Media launches over satellite and IPTV in South Africa.
Like I said before Vodacom will become a Vodafone subsidiary with the British giant probably taking about 60% of equity, offering a percentage to black empowerment partners, offering shares to employees and floating the rest on the JSE. From next year they might look at expanding operations to countries on the sub-continent where they're not operating.

Posted by artwales

At N120k, the iphone is overpriced. You could get it for about $400 in the U.S.

Posted by coolapostle
I saw the ads too. I wondered if the iPhones were unlocked so that they could be used with our networks.

The Guardian Newspaper Strike is still on.... and I noticed an increase in Obituaries in ThisDay on Thursday. That meant less tech news -the reason why I buy ThisDay on Thursday!

MTEL is now offering goodies like free on-net calls and SMS. I will get the details.

Posted by abubakar
@artwales: i think $400 is for a locked phone. But i hear they have gotten around unlocking it here in naija. Anyhow, apart from the touchscreen facia, there isnt much appealing to me about the iphone. Any real good feature would be limited by our network.

@amby: did u mean giveaway or "giveaway"? Cos 120k is a big chunk of cheese.

Over this mtel bonanza, its a lame attempt as thier nationwide service has crumbled. No service where i am now (maiduguri) nor did i see any in bauchi. But the real question is is the gprs free for the period? When i get into abuja next month i'll know for sure. But i believe coola can furnish that info b4 then (unless he has gone for one of his "journeys"!)

Havent started using the opera 4 yet. Hope its not as ram hungry as 3.1.

Did anyone give any 3.5G sightings in abuja?

Posted by 2tek
i downloaded opera mini 4,i noticed it uses more byte per page than opera mini3, like a page i normally open for 5kb now is 10kb. i changed the settings to mobile mode and its still the same thingy.

i was going through bbc and i found it rather amusing - 'The midweek misery is behind us. All hail the return of the Premier League: a world where Steven Gerrard is a superhero, Frank Lampard ventures into the opposition penalty area and Scott Carson is a very good goalkeeper.'

well there will be no hooligans at euro 08.

which antivirus would anyone recommend, norton is really nothing. i uninstalled it and i'm now using kaspersky 7.0

one of my boys here is selling iphones 40k unlocked.

the iphone made its debut in the uk some 2weeks back.....i played with it a bit.

Its got an impressive UI, large screen and very good browser.

However its got alot of drawbacks, namely:

Limited third-party apps

No user-replaceable battery

Lack of Expansion slot. Important for music lovers

Data that crawls cos of lack of 3G,hsdpa(Not a problem in Naija for now)

Lack of plug-ins. An iPhone without Java, Windows Media, Real, and Flash Video support will fall short of delivering an uncompromised Web experience.

Way too expensive.Imagine paying £269 and signing up to a contract costing £35 to £55 a month with O2 , Apple’s chosen network partner, for a minimum of 18 months. lifting the cost close to £1,000- phew

I dont really see it as a true smart phone.

So am afraid its not for me,atleast for now.Maybe the next iphone would correct these flaws and who knows.

But quite impressive for Apple with their first phone debut...am sure the next iphone would be a bomb.

I have moved back to the russian mod. The opera mini 4 surely looks good but i can't afford the cost.

I pity the english. No Euro 08 for them. Mclaren was never a good choice

which version of Norton do have on your system. I am using Norton 360 and
it is ok 4 me. there is also Symantec (Norton) end-point protection

@Brym...this story about iphone sending data back to Apple inc. sound like a criminal act. Actually what are the data sent to Apple?

"Data monitoring could provide valuable information of how many iPhones have been unlocked, how they are distributed around the world and also for studying user preferences and habits, for example."

Posted by chuksy
I personally dont think Apple is involved in such things, but even if they are,it cant work cos it goes against the laws of so many European countries where the iphone is presently sold and used.
And more so Apple has denied this claim.

Yes it does....but even with that its just too expensive. You can get the n95 with more features for free on contract.

Posted by abubakar
£35 is a bit steep. Most likely £10 - 15 goes for calls etc then the rest pays for the phone.

@coola: what is happening with the mtel gprs test? Or have u lost ur old sim?

E de. I just have a slight phones-with-no-modem problem To confirm if GPRS is still free, I just have to put a (free) call to my MTEL link man... if he has not been sacked. I will update U Guys.

Meanwhile, MTEL International Calls is 30 bucks. Better than all the GSM networks but no where near the CDMA boys.

Meanwhile I am looking forward to utilising the free calls with my fiancee... the prospect of sleeping early until December 18th fills my heart with joy.

Yeah i've always wanted to ask if the GPS capabilities on these phones can and have been uutilized in Nigeria..would be interesting.I've always tried to locate cities and towns in Nigeria on the Google map, but its never on focus. You can hardly zoom-in on a location.

Posted by Dejitella
my N95 easily get a GPS fix if the keypad is opened and under clear sky, i ve used it when my N95 was yet to be upgraded to V 12 but i just did a firmware upgrade to v20 and it makes it even faster to get a fix than usual, it now uses the enhanced GPS.

Posted by 234hay
@ Deji..., how exactly does it work, how useful is it and I hope you are in Nigeria?

Posted by coolapostle
From what I have heard, some private companies have been creating digital maps of Nigerian cities. It is all private initiatives for their own products. The most conprehensive digital map belongs to one of the companies offering Fleet Tracking services using GPRS.

Posted by 234hay
Does that mean the GPS functionality is of no use in Nigeria...at least for now?
Has anyone seen the Motorola Z8 yet...in real life? I went window shopping at Slot and whemn I asked if they had it in stock, they told me probably next year.

Posted by coolapostle
OK, at last. MTEL GPRS is now 10kobo per kb. Same apn settings.

On GPS: The Fleet Tracking companies are using it for their business. Those with Nokia phones will have to rely on the maps that some European company has produced for 9ja.

If OBJ was still around, he would have probably been sold the idea to set up a company that will create a digital map of 9ja or we might launch another Satellite to do the job!

Posted by abubakar
The problem wouldn't be getting the gps signal as its world wide. The problem is to get an app that will have naija mapped. To my understanding businesses and the like could upload their locations and details to google maps but the low res of our area makes it useless. When will anyone have a Route 66 clone for naija? The real question is who would pay for it hear. If we had our tourism industry pumping it might have sold. Anyhow, when will SE make gps as a standard feature like bluetooth?

Just got into kaduna and lo and behold, the so called mtel bonanza is epileptic. Many base stations seem to be offline as when u roll thru town the service bar rises and falls like the tide. And so far NO GPRS SIGNAL though a friend told me he has seen it.

Subject: T.D. Jakes Stopped by the Police

Bishop T.D. Jakes (a well-known preacher) was returning to Texas after a speaking engagement. When his plane arrived, there was a limousine there to transport him to his home in Dallas. As he prepared to get into the limo, he stopped and spoke to the driver. 'You know' he said, 'I am almost 50 years old and I have never driven a limousine. Would you mind if I drove it for a while?' The driver said, 'No problem. Have a go at it.'

T.D. gets into the driver's seat and they head off down the highway. A short distance away sat a rookie State Trooper operating his first speed trap. The long black limo went by him doing 70 in a 55 mph zone. The trooper pulled out and easily caught the limo and got out of his patrol car to begin the procedure. The young trooper walked up to the driver's door and when the glass was rolled down he was surprised to see who was driving. He immediately excused himself and went back to his car and called his supervisor. He told the supervisor, 'I know we are supposed to enforce the law but I also know that important people are sometimes given certain courtesies. I need to know what I should do because I have stopped a very important person.' 'The supervisor asked, 'Is it the governor?' The young trooper said, 'No, he's more important than that.' The supervisor said, 'Oh, so it's the president.' The young trooper said, 'No, he's even more important than that.' The supervisor finally asked, 'Well then, who is it?'

The young trooper said, I think it's Jesus because he's got T. D. Jakes for a chauffeur!!! !!

errrr.. I forgot to say that I dropped out of the MTEL craze because MTEL is down in Jos where my fiancee is. My MTEL SIM is back in the cooler.

I hear that even some MTEL MSC's are down... the company is in crisis. The free promo may need to be extended if they are to get the states back on board.

BTW: MTEL GPRS was the fastest of all... so maybe thats why we want it badly.
