The phone was only used to recieve 2 calls and that was all

Posted by brym!
And ANGEL posted PNF's 8,000th post. Congrats all.

Posted by OluYom
@angel: DomainStandard had the same issue with Reltel's phone. The phone had all the markings of 'refurbished', and we knew that replacing it would only place another refurbished unit in our hands. We eventually abandoned the line.

For those who were discouraged by the N115k opening price of Sonyericsson's P1, don't despair. The price is crashing fast. Current price is N90K. I hope W960i will crash like this too when it is launched.

It isn't a question of being discouraged. SE is just not getting it right. Even after the price has stabilised, I can imagine - from precedence - that the P1i will still cost significantly more than say the E61i. It is partly that kind of absurdity that is killing SE.

SE used to provide good value for money. A few years back, you could get an Ericsson phone with an awesone feature list for the price of an over-priced and featureless Nokia. It was one reason why I loved Ericsson then. Now you have to pay through your nose for an SE than you do for an equally (or in some cases more) capable Nokia.

That, it is said, is how the cookie crumbles.

Congrats are in order to all members of the PNF family on finally breaching 8000 posts.
May the thread go from strength to strength. Me, I'm an occassionally lurker and love how the conversation has developed over the years from call chargers to wireless broadband access in Nigeria.

snoop! Glad to have you around anytime. Cheers!

@all: heard about Glo's new licence in Benin Republic? And of MTN Benin's suspension? I have full details on my blog' if interested.

The crazy part is that Glo is expected to launch services within the next fifty-something days!

Thanks for that explanation AYA. SE phones have been getting much more expensive of late while Nokias are more affordable. I guess that's why I never bought the k800i. When I can get a Nokia with better features at that price. It's only phones that have failed woefully that gets cheaper from SE.

Posted by ambyzown
Sad as it may seem, I have to agree with you guys on this SE issue, but you will agree with me that despite the initial high launch prices of SE phones, the price quickly settles into a more affordable range. I'm so addicted to that its really very difficult to switch camp. I'm going to wait for the W960 to fall to the N40k range (which should happen sometime in March 2008) but if I get impatient, by December I might just try out this "Mystical and magical Nokia E61i" Its just the wide form factor that irks me.
I'm not a flip phone fan, otherwise I woulda been interested in the N76.
N95 doesn't look so hot anymore, and it ages really bad.

@amby: After playing with the N95 once, I couldn't walk away from the impression of why Nokia made people pay so much for the flimsy-feeling cheap plastic finish! I thought it would age terribly too.

You should see how good looking my over 1-year old E61 is at the moment. The E61i has an even classier finish. The N95 casing is just....! It should have come with the kind of class the iPhone oozes, if you get my drift.

Posted by ambyzown
I really haven't seen the iPhone live, so can't comment on its look or feel, BUT the OS is awesome. Pity its still a long way off from being readily available. Even if it were, I doubt I'd be willing to buy one. (I'd sure appreciate a gift of it though)

Posted by brym!
Methinks the price of the P1 will find its level at 60k in a couple of months. By December, it should be cheaper than the Nokia E61i. This week PTV @ Saka Tinubu is selling the P1 for 80K.
The 4 gig W950 is the bargain smartphone for now going for 33.5K at the same store. The P990? ...hanging tight at 39.5k.

About 38k and 53k respectively.

@Artwales: if you go back a few pages someone mentioned seeing the Z8 and I think also quoted a price.

Posted by brym!
@AYA: I did, it turned out that it was the Z3 that was advertised at Park and Shop and not the Z8.
I'll enquire about the Z8 from other VI stockists tommorow if I am a little bit free.

Was anyone at e-nnovate today? I intend to be there tomorrow. I'll be posting live reports on my blog from my e61i.

if you all could remember i said that the plastic finish looked a little sweaky to me when i first bought/used my N95, really it's a pity nokia could use such cheap plastic. but the content inside the fone over the total size of the fone is superb.

I'm afraid there was little to see at e-nnovate this year. The expo hall was half empty. MTN had Blackberries on display; not even those being used by their staff were configured and working; plus they want me to ditch my superior E61i for a more expensive but by far inferior Blackberry device in order to be able to use their service. Laughable and pathetic.

Etranzact was there as usual, the account I applied for early last year still un-opened!

Oh, and there was the usual talks - which I didn't bother to attend.

I'll spare you the rant that has been playing in my head all day since driving out of MUSON Centre this afternoon.

A driver is stuck in a traffic jam on the motorway. Nothing is moving. Suddenly a man knocks on the window. The driver rolls down his window and asks, "What's going on? the man responded "Militants have kidnapped, OBJ, IBB, Atiku, Buhari, Tony Anenih, Ahmadu Ali, Dariye, Nnamani, Odili, Ibrahim Mantu, Tinubu, Kalu, Ibori and Igbinedion. They're asking for a $500 million ransom. Otherwise they're going to douse them with petrol and set them on fire. So, we're going from car to car, taking up a collection." The driver asks, "How much is everyone contributing, on the average?" the man responded "About a litre of petrol and a stick of matches."

More Congratulations...

GSM was 6 years old in Nigeria on 8th of August. Without it, there would be no GPRS and no WAP and not PNF.

CDMA Guys Reltel hit 500,000 subscribers last week. Starcomms better watch their back. Multi-links better seat up.

Now, I would like to hear your views about the Chinese Phones. I saw one the other day with a TV Tuner that also had mp3, mp4 videos, touch screen and really wide, colourful screen. In fact, the model seemed to have facilities for dual SIM but my friend couldn't activate it. Price? 23k in Lagos. (Imagine a Nokia with TV, that would be in the 150k range!)

I think it is time one of U gets one and put it to test for the rest of us. For example, how can it be configured for web/wap browsing since the manual is all chinese?? Because browsing with that screen will be something else.

AYA, over to u....

SE has really gotten me to wonder whether I still have my senses straight!!! I got my P990 and decided to use it for a while and see what all the "bugs" everyon has been complaining about. Apart from a system freeze when playing the VJ Singh golf game I didnt see any. Thats how I now decided to Update it and...... there is no software on the CD for the Update Service. So I think,"No problem, just go to the site and download there", right? WRONG!!! Went to the software page under support and dont see it there. It took very careful wording before I could get it from thier search engine and it still takes me back to the same software page. Do I need glasses? I cant find a single link to down load the Update Service package. Can it be embedded in the PC Suite they have online? Im downloading it now to see if its there. Hope it doesnt conflict with the one I have installed already.
If anyone knows where the link to just the updater is give me a shout!!!!

Posted by abubakar
Got the link from an esato forum. It is silly they dont have one easily available though!!

Posted by brym!
@abu: Congrats on your new phone O! How far? Were you able update the firmware with the latest release? How is the P990 performing generally? Has performance finally matched price? Please share your experience so far.

@ABU... Why not return it and try a nokia? SE was it.

Posted by brym!
@area & pxt: I beg make una lef abu alone. Just as you guys are Nokia freaks so also are abu and amby. Someone has to keep the SE flag flying here.
I will consider the W950 when it hits N25K inspite of the bugs, virus, mosquitoes, bacteria and HIV in it.
@Coola: Those Chinese phones are loaded but they don't look durable to me.I don't think the software and hardware can withstand the stress I will put them through in 1 year.

I will stay away from those phones for several reasons

1.) Though hardware looks okay, software and implementation are totally mediocre.

2.) They are certainly produced by some third-rated barely legal, possibly underground makers which means poor or no certification and no quality checks. The SAR of those handsets may be in the roofs!

3.) No support. When it drops in water (or shit), you are unlikely to get parts.

4.) Poor build quality and really perform as advertised.

All ye SE haters will eat ur words very soon. Yes SE has flopped with its latest smartphone software, but that does not make its entire product line suspect. Its non-smartphone range are still top notch.

Abu if you are unable to download the updater software from the SE website, I can write it to a cd for you and send it to u, its a 23mb file, so can't mail it to u. enjoy ur P990i its not nearly as bad as people claim it to be.

Posted by OluYom
You guys get off Abu's back. Everyone cannot go over to the dark side, as some of us have done. And yes; the P990i is a good product in its perfected stage. I have a friend who used a P990i for a few weeks - an Orange-tweaked version - and he has only glowing praise for the device.

SE's P1i had me interested in that brand again. But the price is sort of.....

Hope you enjoy your new toy/tool, Abu. Let's know how it goes.

i am not a sony ericsson hater 'cos i still have my W800i.

Meanwhile you can upload the updater software using rapidshare and send Abu the download link.

@ all: Its official the iPhone has been "hacked".Go here http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20424880/#storyContinued

Posted by ambyzown
so does this mean that we can now get an iphone from any source and have it unlocked so it can work on any network?

Posted by brym!
@amby: I guess that is what it means. The procedure seems tedious so better wait for it to be further developed and simplified...by the way who needs an iphone? Certainly not me.

Word!

Yes; once unlocked the iPhone can be used on any GSM network, including ours. European Apple fans should be getting ecstatic already.

Posted by coolapostle
On the Iphone: It took less than a month for the hackers to succeed too. Fantastic. I am one of those who will like one... if I can afford it.

It also seems, the chinese phones are yet to win the approval of some of you here. No problem, one day you will see the light.

From my IM Buds:
It is speculated that Two moons will show up on 27 August 2007*. 27th Aug is a day that will have an outstanding outlook.............* Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August. It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will cultivate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles of earth. Be sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 12:30 am. It will look like the earth has 2 moons. The next time Mars may come this close is in the year 2287. Share this with friends & colleagues as NO ONE ALIVE TODAY will ever see it again
