@ihe: Funny, but I do send SMS to other nets from Glo.
Posted by ihejirika
@Aya,even 2day I sent a txt 4rm my glo but they deducted their full N15.Their free glo 2 glo or N7.5 sms is of little or no benefit 2 me.
Posted by momolosho
@Aya goodday & how is baby am just returned from one of d states where glo is yet to gprs them' pls Aya are u now able to check ur e.mail on dat info u gave me?
Posted by OluYom
@momo: My girlfriend is doing fine, & so's my wife. Yahoo mobile site seems to be perpetually inaccessible o! Dont know what has happened.

I learnt tht NCC directd tht mobile line companies shld stop collectg rconnectn fee to avoid false declaratn of subscribr base tht may arise 4rm pple preferg 2 buy new lines instead of payg 2 b rconnectd.I hope MTN adhere 2 ths directv when I go 2 get a welcome pack.

Hiya fellas and (only) landlady. Glo's new SMS tariffs were in the papers on Thursday. More hot news: Vmobile has clicked 2 million subs!!!!! This blew me out! And I think Glo should also be in the 2 million range too. MTN? I DON'T KNOW. How did V do it? Comments please...
Posted by OluYom
@coola. Vmobile got rid of the boardroom squabbles that had bogged them down, simple. Good to see some healthy competition; innit?
I would like to know where both glo & mtn stand. Mtel, anyone?
Posted by coolapostle
I am sure MTel are still at the 900000 mark of november. V has impressed me. 1.1m in August. 1.5m in Oct. And now 2 million in Mid-December! I think the 1k SIM card promo has over delivered. At this rate there will be over 8 million GSM subs by the 4th anniversary!
Posted by OluYom
The case of mtel is like that of the leopard who never changes its spots. A national shame. I had hoped they would at least play more vibrantly.

Some fixed wireless phone companies claim they provide internet services eg,Starcom,Reitel,MTS First wireless etc.Does it really work?
Posted by OluYom
@ihe. Yes, it does. I used multilinks internet access for a while. My dad still does. I intend to get a starcomms line sometime this month and use their internet access as well.
Posted by ihejirika
@Aya,its a welcome development.I'm considering MTS line 4 myself.I learnt they dont charge daily access fee.How is internet billing on Multilinks?
Posted by OluYom
@ihe: Yes, therez no daily access charge on MTS. Multilinks still charges that. Internet access is billed monthly flat rate. E.g. 8am-6pm daily: N10k monthly, while 24hr access is N15k. No dialup charges. Same for most PTOs.
Posted by Angelgirl
@AYA , i think 10k monthly charge with Multilinks is still expensive, or will i say its the same cost with an ISP which charges N5000, for the same access (but with dial up), the only advantage is less hassles in getting a free dial up line.
Posted by ihejirika
@Aya,I learnt MTS bill N6k monthly 4 internet services.I'm not sure of how it works.Hope all popular sites r accessible,eg; Esato,yahoo & y email,BBC, Anovena etc.
Posted by coolapostle
Have u considered the Direct-to-home satellite companies like TITV and Trendnet? U get broadband access plus channels for 6k per month. That is what I want Next year.
Posted by OluYom
@angel. I disagree. On a dialup service, saying online for 10 hrs in 1 day alone costs N2,400 (at N4 per minute). Multiply that by 30 days, then add your N5k... and your purse is empty
@coola. I dont have details for TrendTV & co., but DSTV for example still actually requires you to dial up (and I should think that your PTO will bill that); its the download side of the connection that is broadband.

@AYA, well i guess my initial calculations was wrong, anyway, i dont think most offpeak users who are still on dial up access are heavy internet users, if not they would have realised the cost, epecially if they are paying as low as N2,000 per month for access from 11pm to 8am, most only connect btw 6-8am.
How well does the internet connection with multilinks run?
Posted by coolapostle
Beware of those Fixed Wireless Telcos. What they advertise is far from what they deliver! I went to cellcom Abuja with my 25k and started hearing new 'stories'. An extra cable of 5k. No more slots available except the midnight band. My area did not have enough coverage and so another antenna of 15k was needed. Beware, I say, BEWARE.
Posted by OluYom
@angel: Read cool's lips. He is right. Most of the time, they are playing games with subscribers. Thatz why I ditched Multilinks' internet access. Still, I dont think it happens all the time.
As per how well multilinks works. In EVERY case I am aware of, you get fast connections the first couple of days (like a honeymoon period); then it starts crawling perpetually. In my own case, it eventually stopped browsing & they continued to pocket my money. Isnt that called stealing?

Folks,I'll watch out b4 gettg d MTS.Just came back 4rm MTN wher I got my Welcome back pack.
Posted by coolapostle
I can't understand why U went thru all that stress to get another MTN line! Police report, court affidavid, queing at thye friendship Centre and coughing out 2.5k. If mine gets missing again, I will buy a fresh line. I have since "migrated" all my friends to my Glo line and the MTN is just for research purposes. The other week I was exploring the MTN Fastmail service and I did not know they were charging me N25 per text! Blew my N800 bucks in the process. Oh, MTN... Milk Those Nigerians.
Posted by ihejirika
@coola,much 2 my relief, they collected N980 instead.I still need d MTN bcos its d only network tht has covered my house in villa.D number itself has travelled very far & wide.As far as Afganistan.
Posted by coolapostle
MTN must have seen the light. I knoew most ppl would never go thru the stress and then pay 2.5k. Do you know they actually gave everyone 5 free access days recently as compensation. Unlike MTN.
Posted by ihejirika
@coola,at MTN office 2day,they were giving yellow shirts & flyers to ppl in d name of xmas gift.I declined it & told d lady I'll prefer some free calls on xmas day instead.
Posted by OluYom
@ihe. Good talk!
Posted by brym!
MTN is like a typical British set up; nothing is free. Of things to give free, it is access days they offered.
Posted by ihejirika
For thos of us tht have d end of our access days already in 2005,I wonder what useful use I can make of d 5 days.NOTE; MTN offer a maximum of 90 days as access days.
Posted by brym!
Well u now have 90 + 5 maximum access days. :-) When Mtn commences gprs services I can bet that they will start charging from day 1. No free browsing.
Posted by coolapostle
The access days were to compensate The days MTN subs had problems recharging. MTN Nigeria has boosted the whole MTN Group so much that they have over taken Vodacom. The hot news is that Telkom and son Vodacom wants to bid for NITEL and MTEL. E go bloody!
Posted by ihejirika
I still wonder what 2 make of d access days.Wth Vmobile, access days accumulate into years.MTN shld b ashamed 2 talk of compensatg subscribers wth access days.No matter how many days it is.
Posted by OluYom
It'll be great to have someone buy NITEL & its mobile arm Mtel. They are both not presently reckoned with in the market. Just imagine, their active subscriber base keeps dropping while everyone else is moving up!
Posted by coolapostle
@ihe U rejected MTN free gifts? The sticker will come in handy when u need to cover a dent behind ur car or a cracked tail light. U didnt think that deep did u? Go back tomorrow :-D . @angel I know u r the ISP guru here. How r ISP's coping with the incursions from the Fixed Wireless Telcos? And now DTH satellite folks r jumping in. Competition on all sides!
Posted by OluYom
@coola: The more, the merrier. Competition is the consumer's best friend. The ISPs are not finding it easy. If my phone line can double as my internet access point, why would I go to an ISP? And at the prices on offer...
For example, I hardly visit cyber cafes any longer since Glo GPRS came on. Convergence is not just a buzz word; its king.
Posted by ihejirika
@coola,wearg MTN shirt or puttg on their sticker is like advertisg 4 MTN wthout being paid & I'm not going 2 pertake in tht.MTN is wise enough 2 know how 2 reward its subscribers.Even MTN4U is another fraud.
Posted by Angelgirl
@coola, Aya is right, competition is high now, we are still in the market because of our large subscriber base made of small biz owners who use our ISP 4 their email, and they just still want to maintain their email address for biz's sake. In addition to a few other bigger firms who are still on our domain, we are moving to wireless soon.
People who are opting out now, i guess are the single private home users, who discovered Glo mobile internet and other PTO's.
Posted by OluYom
@angel: Most ISPs have to rebuild their business model or pack up. The PTOs are biting a chunk of their base; the GSM networks are biting another piece.
Some ISPs are already pro-acting, setting up WiFi hotspots. Only thing is, the prices I read are outrageous: one ISP says its 1 hour card for WiFi costs N1,000! That's 10 hours browsing at any cafe, and 48 hours of browsing on my P800 in the comfort of my bedroom!!! Maybe it was a joke
DISC for example offers access to its server FREE for dialup and makes its money from interconnection agreements with PTOs and GSM nets from which people dial in. I use DISC dialup with my MTN line and it works well. Meanwhile, some other ISPs are still charging between N3,000 and N4,000 per month access to their servers, with little difference in performance.
The plot thickens, you will agree.

My MTN line voicemail has faild 2 work properly since I got d line back.Initially, calls 2 d line r diverted 2 voicemail whn its switchd off/not available. Now callers r simply told tht d numbr calld is incorrect.A by product of loosg d line.
Posted by coolapostle
Ah! Voicemail. I used to be a believer and force ppl to lose money dropping messages. Until it happened to me! Called some1 n heard the voice message for some secs then had to pay the phone operator 30 bucks! I dont use vmail on my glo. Activating it self na hell.
Posted by ihejirika
Glo voicemail has a technical problem. For about one month now it doesnt work. @coola,if I were u,I would have delivered d msg I have 2 d persons voicemail box. Voicemail is a very useful thg when one knows how to handle it.
Posted by OluYom
Yes, voicemail can be useful. Vmobile has d most user friendly voicemail system I know. It tells you upfront that it is diverting your call. That way, you exercise your freedom to choose to leave a message or not. Other networks should take a cue from them.
As for Glo voicemail, never used it. I rarely make or receive calls on my Glo line since the number is "unlisted".
Posted by ihejirika
With activated voicemail, callers 2 ur line will not b told tht d number is switched off,not available or not reachable etc.D phone will either ring & u recieve d call or ur voicemail box will receive msgs & u r notified tht u have a msg dependg on how ur settgs r.
Posted by coolapostle
I used voicemail on my MTN for 2 years. Most of my friends n family knew what to expect. But when the thing catches u unawares, u will not know when u hang up. Then u have to pay 30 bucks. Most ppl used to complain to me but I did not bother. On more voicemail for me.Hey, I notice that ESATO did not ask for my password b4 posting when I went thru my bookmarks to get here. Can some1 confirm?
Posted by ihejirika
Complaint about landg in voicemail is a very good way of knowg tht d fellow does not have a serious msg 4 me. Voicemail offers me d opportunity of being 24 hour/7 days accessible.Even when I'm not ther or when d phone is switchd off.ESATO has behavd incredibly well over d past week.It knows its regular customrs now.

Knock! Knock! Is AYA there? Pls don't go quiet on us or else Ihe will be forced to do another monologue. Have been slightly down with fever: feeling stronger today. To everyone if u had the coins will you go for a smart phone or another regular phone?
Posted by ihejirika
@brym,take it easy wth d fever.Wish u rapid recovery.I'm not r"ly interested in phone details.I want 2 make & recieve phonecalls.I already got a nokia 5110(feeding bottle)in replacement of 2100.
Posted by coolapostle
My dear, u better use ur feeding bottle with pride! See why it is not smart to splash so much on phones? That also helps me to answer bryms question. If the smart phone costs less than 20k, i may be interested. By the way, i published a small book on phone protection last year so i can give u some consultation on the subject. But first u must take my survey on phone loss.
Posted by ihejirika
@coola,u just stated d obvious.I'm in no scared of pickpockets wth my feeding bottle.
Posted by ihejirika
Aya's absence is unnatural.Brym pls knock harder.
