@234h: unless u're a real biz exec that gets crucial email that need instant responses, the email on any SE phone suffices. this blackberry offer is just for show offs! I check my mail (abu@awoof.com) periodically thru out the work day and at a cheaper cost than subscribin to MTN's offer. even on my old T630 the MY FRIENDS section handles IM fine. i'm surprised that more people dont use it

The only thing we gained from that strike is that NLC,knowingly or unknowingly, has signed that govt is free to increase, even double or triple petrol price after one year.Perhaps they think that one year is eternity.Keeps me wondering whether Nigerians are not worse for it.

Guys i dont know if am the only one experiencing this problem with celtel, i was sent a message from celtel that i won 60 mins free call celtel to celtel for this sunday, but since early hours of 2day, have been trying to make a call without success, cant even check my balance.

@ abubakar: like you said ''just for showoffs". They know that most of its Nigerian customers like ''efizee'' and don't know any better so they give them BlackBerry.
From what I read on this forum, you seem to know a lot about Starcomms. I use starcomms at home. What I would like to see though is a pay as you surf package. I emailed their help desk once and I was told there exists such a package but its quite expensive. If you happen to know anyone in the "corridors",do tell them to follow in the steps of Multilinks but they should not adopt a hook, line and sinker approach.
@ all: does anyone know any other place with wi-fi access besides the Palms or the Galleria; free or paid for

Posted by abubakar
@234h: the problem with pay as you go is the billing. a friend of mine using multilinks told me that though they were charging N525 per day (pre 10% vat) if had problems with:
1. it has to be loaded on the day before you want to use it, and
2. if ur balance isnt up to N525, they would take whats left at midnight and not let you browse. he'd load N1000 1day and lose N475 the next.

@234h: the 2nd problem is resolvable, but the 1st isnt. for a daily withdrawl of the money it has to be done at a single set time, midnight being the most obvious. what i would like to see from Starcomms is a greater number of time slot options. (eg weekends only).

@uchrik: i've marked the day on my calendar: 20th june 2008
thats the day i start buying fuel in 50litre kegs and keep them in my bathroom! a few days later when
a) there is an increment of 100 % or
b) there's another strike against the increment and all stations are close
i'll sell them like an oil Sheik!

Try Unilag around the senate building and Engineering Faculty (Free)
You can also access free wi-fi at the airport.
Chicken Republic outlets in Lagos used to have free wi-fi, but I dont know if it still runs.
"E-now now (TM)" available around major cybercafes (not free)

You weren't alone in the agony of last sunday. It was general. The day ended with my 120mins being forfeited without making a single call.
Not to worry, next sunday will be better. Celtel have realised their folly and has increased the amount you must load in order to qualify for free sunday calls to N1000, and this must be loaded between friday and thursday of a given week in order to qualify for free calls the following sunday.

@Areafada and Abu: Thanks for the wishes. I give thanks to God for mercy.

The best thing president Umar Yar A'dua can do to win my heart (And I presume that of several Nigerians too), is to permanently solve the Lagos-Benin road problem. Its so bad now that travellers sleep on the way. It took me 9hrs to get to Benin from lagos, despite the fact that I took shortcuts that saved me some time. its really pathetic that in this 21st century roads like that still exist. We really need a minister of roads & highways in this country.

@amby: I spent nearly 10 hours on that road yesterday and I dread the prospect of going thru this route to Lagos on Monday. It is a national shame!
How can a government absndon such an important link road to the Niger Delta and East baffles me?

Posted by Angelgirl
Brym and Amby I hope by now you guys will know what we easterners suffer on that road, Lagos to Benin is just half the journey, and the road is even better than Benin to east.:-(

I entered Lagos by 5pm on Monday after about 6 hours of travelling through the old route: Benin-Owo-Akure-Ife-Ibadan-Lagos. An increasing number of transporters prefer this longer route to the terrible Sagamu-Benin route. Today's Guardian reported that two tankers caught fire and got burnt at Ore. Apparently, one tanker was trying to pull out another broken one from a hole on the Sagamu-Benin road and somehow caught fire which spread to the second tanker. Two hawkers lost their lives.
I hope Yar'Adua will address this issue soonest. About time he moves FERMA to the Presidency.

Back to telecomms; has anyone tried operamini 4 recently? There's improved performance on my WM device...no more crashing. I'm enjoying the experience so far, thanks to free browsing.

Which free browsing? Is something happen'n that I should know? Abeg explain.

@All Sorry I have dropped off for some weeks. Great to see all you regulars. How did the Celtel free Sunday call go last weekend?

Is it just me or is Glo really slow in innovation these days?

@Abu Since you are in Abuja, let's see and have lunch one of these days. Not weekends sha bcos I need to see future Mrs. Coola in Jos.

I need a good advice.

I want to buy a better fone than N93 which i'm presently using, but within the price range of N95 (which is the naturally upgrade for N93, and which i'm thinking of gettin) ie N83,000 which fone should i go for that will give me better value that amount?

Thank for the advice.

@Coola: Until yesterday, Celtel was not billing some of us for gprs usage.
Glo don tire. Na 'follow follow' dem dey do na. Dem just drop their BlackBerry connection rates and device prices to meet that of MTN. Adenuga should come back... who dey pursue am sef? All our 'thief thief' governors never run, why Adenuga dey run from EFCC?
@Area: Better than N93? The N95 is the best mobile device for that price unless you want to wait for the E90 which currently sells for about $850 in Europe.
@All: At this extremely low rate of posting, the obituary of this forum is not far off.

thanks brym for ur response, i called slot the gsm shop at computer village and i was told that E90 is presently available and it costs N180k.

@all i've always wondered in my Nokia smart phone, when filling in a new phone number in my phone's contact phone book, why the birthday date that i fill in, is not automatically sychronised with the calander on the phone, for reminder purposes? if Nokia can impliment this small concept i want to believe it will catch on with other manufacturers.

Posted by brym!
@Area: That facility is available on Windows Mobile devices.

Posted by adrusa
I was looking to buy the e90, but I think 180K for a phone is insane! I will have to wait, and may be, wait and....

brym, i didn't know that. i'm a nokia person, but if Nokia can impliment the concept it'll really be appreciated.

Posted by brym!
@Area: Sorry, that facility is available on WM as a third pary freeware plug-in. Something similar may be available on Symbian platform, try searching.
I was at Slot, VI yesterday and saw the E90 for 170k. That's too steep even for early adopters.
@All: Celtel has stopped further activation of gprs service for prepaid customers. May launch BlackBerry Solutions soon.

@all i've bought the N95 and today marks my first full day with the device it's quite cool except for the fragile slider. it feels like something that can break off, i'll ave to put up a big sign for my children "DON'T TOUCH DAD'S PHONE" . overall it a better device than N93.

A friend of mine saw the E90 for N140,000 at Otigba today. The price drop begins....

I'm likely to upgrade my E61 to the E61i tomorrow. Windows Mobile devices are just unnecessarily expensive and not much value for money. The HTC S620 does not deliver as much as the E61 does and yet costs almost twice as much! Na wa!

brym!, I salute you WM guys. I have tried, I beg.

Posted by artwales
ADRUSA, how much is the XDAIIi going for? And where do u stay in Ibadan

Posted by Areafada
@Aya, nice fone choice , E61i that's what i miss in my Nokia 9500 the QWERTY keys and large screen size.

Day 2 with my N95, the battery power is best described, so u'll understand what i mean. It's like a V12 Engine 48 valve Mercedes Benz lastest S class with all the lastest gadget, night view monitor, auto headlamps at night, auto wipper when rain starts etc. just name it, and the manufacturer then installs a 5 liters fuel tank so u don't ave to travel too long b4 u refill the fuel tank, if you understand my description u will understand what i mean when i will give the battery life poor. Imagine i had to charge the battery fully twice at work and once at home till 11pm yesterday night and on my way to work this morning it was already signalling low battery, can u imagine that crap. I've been short changed by Nokia here, i can't believe this crap. i now bought a car charger i will buy an extra charger at work, imagine just imagine. disappointment.
Any body with suggestions?

That's a very slight upgrade...very little difference. Why not wait a few months and pick the E90? Don't like this form factor again?

Big phone, big problems. I think the batteries generally get better after a few discharges cycles.

@All Finally got internet access in the office. Multilinks got us first.

@area, congrats on ur new purchase. i think u might have switched on 3g, bluetooth or wifi on permanently to have such a poor battery life. u can try to get a task manager that switches background running apps off automatically. reduce screen brightness, avoid themes with too many animation. i'm sure you should be able to get a full day usage normally.

@mamba, i've been using Nokia now for the past 6 yrs so i know and ave implemented all these hold menu botton down for 2 seconds to check application running in back ground. I tell u it's the battery life it very very power, well i'm still observing the device though, the GPRS ( Global postioning sytem is cool too, i want to feel that might be what is drawing the battery juice but i'm still observing.

In ur wildest dream brym, even when i went to buy the fone @ slot in computer village i was lookin at my left and right side at the same time, any body that looked suspecious and walk at the same pace with me will get a grim look and i'll walk faster so that i'll displace him. In ur wildest dream man, u know that saying "MONKEY NO FINE BUT HIN MAMA LIKE AM" I like the fone but i was just disappionted with the poor battery life, great fone though.

I'm waiting for the price of E90 to come down after buying it, it's only communicator for me hence forth, Ho How i miss my 9500 QWERTY and other editable microsoft office document.

Connecting to Celtel's gprs has been difficult for 2 days now especially from early evening to the following morning. When available the connection is terribly slow...congestion? Another poor planning from Celtel?
I'm back to Glodirect now while monitoring Celtel connection on another handset, when it improves I have to swap sims again.

Well, I guess that time is now.
@Area: Na wa o, e good to be big boy o. The N95 didn't seem fragile when I handled one recently, and I quite agree with you its a lovely phone, but too bad about the battery.
I got myself a W810i to fill the void in my hands, until the W960i becomes available and affordable.
I find Nokia a wee bit awkward for my personality.

Posted by OluYom
@areafada: the N95 battery life is a shame. Why a 950mAh battery when the 9500/9300/E61 have 1500mAh? Duh!

@brym: I'm upgrading because my key responsibilities have been treansfered to someone else, and I had to let go of the E61 for the lady. I needed a replacement NOW. The E61i is the next best thing to the E90. Beautiful device too!

Apart from the display of the W810i which is significantly better than that of the K750i, and the 512mb memory, no significant difference. But its faster than K750i and the sound output is louder.

I experienced these same issues recently too. But I suggest that you pick up your Celtel SIM again now. I've been able to browse without those hitches for about 24 hours now. Hopefully, they've solved whatever the problem was.
