Would love to change to Ubuntu but it's too much of a hassle. And to think the guy behind the Unbuntu project is a South African.

Nice,interesting You remember his name?

Posted by brix25
It's Mark Shuttleworth.

@ brix: I really wouldn't agree with you that 'its too much of a hassle'.The installation process is quite easy if not too easy.Unlike other GNU/Linux distros,Ubuntu and its variants comes with its own partitioner;GRUB I believe its called.
Why I might agree with the 'hassle' issue is where you have a small hard-disk and would probably have to share it with your Windows or Mac OS X.
As for it being owned by a South African, the two SA companies in Nigeria;MTN and Multichoice have not been too 'friendly'.But since we don't have our own billionaire space tourist who supports Open Source Software we might just have to PRAY a Nigeran has such a brillant idea rather than jostling for space on the pages of Ovation.Since its not my money or my bizness, they can continue to say CHEESE...

I tried downloading Ubuntu once and it was taking forever. But I have requested for a free CD. I'm not in any real hurry, but I certainly want to explore alternatives to Windoze.

A friend got a new Vista-loaded laptop recently. Half of the applications he needs are reported by Vista as having compatibility issues. After a couple of reboots when running those apps, he had to uninstall them. The lappy runs Pentium M 1.6MHz Duo Processor and 1GB RAM, yet my Celeron M 750MB RAM is not as sluggish in performing tasks. Told him I'm not interested in running Vista for a long time.

Back to linux, one of my reservations with Ubuntu is about compatibility with accesories e.g. My PCMCIA card for internet access, and my smartphones. If one has to trawl the internet to obtain drivers for those, then the hassle may not be worth it (if at all one finds).

Anyone knows if Mac laptops are being sold and supported in Nigeria?

Posted by brym!
@AYA: Superior Equipments @ Civic Centre, Ozumba Mbadiwe, VI sells and services Mac laptops. PC Outlet @ The Palms also sells Apple products.
Are you thinking of getting one? They are quite expensive and lack drivers and support for most mobile devices. Unless ofcourse you are going for the new Intel-based lappys that support dual OS X and Windows XP operation.

LOL, my life is already quite simplified...I use OpenOffice and Mozilla Firefox. I could probably load Ubuntu onto my hard drive but right now I'm still happy with the bits and pieces I get from Windoze ( to quote AYA) and will stick it out with XP until something better comes along. Unfortunately I've not been convinced by Vista.

Just a quick question: I see lots of people on here have the latest handsets, do you guys buy them through the networks like Glo and MTN or do you get them from independent shops? Down here most of the expensive handsets are acquired when you sign a two-year (ball & chain) contract.

Posted by OluYom
@brym: It looks like I am generally stuck with Windows then.

@brix25: You will be hard pressed to find any network offering subsidised handsets on contracts here. GSM contracts in Nigeria are still very exploitative - more than you can imagine. Most of us buy our handsets - expensive or otherwise - off the open market.

True, we buy from independent vendors.
Ball and chain contract?
Realy how does this contract stuff work over there?
Is part of the cost of the phone built into the contract?

Posted by 234hay
@ brix25:you might not have to wait long as Microsoft will be pulling support for XP as early as next year in a bid to 'force' people to upgrade to Vista.Of course Dell will still be supplying XP notebooks for some time;not sure for how long.Mac OS X is not an option.Ubuntu on the other hand is gathering support from companies such as Dell.HP might just be looking their way too.
There is no doubt that there isn't an array of applications yet available for Ubuntu or GNU/Linux for thaty matter,I am aware that some of the applications for XP can made to run via emulation
Regarding the phones ,believe it or not people buy them.I know some1 who got the N95 for N120,000(waht is that in Rands?)

The contract thing is quite simple, you go into any authorised service provider and choose from one of a myriad of packages, you then choose what phone you want and then you sign a two-year contract. I'd say the contract is "ball and chain" because it's very prejudicial if for some other reason you want to cancel it within the two-year period.
But for all this you get the funkiest handset (depending on ur package) and free minutes.
Right now the N95 is available on MTN and Vodacom, you have to pay something like an initial $150 towards the phone and then your subscription fee will be in the region of $50 a month over a two-year period. The cool thing though is that in the 20th month of your contract you get a free handset upgrade, again depending on your choice of phone.

The price of Nokia N95 has already started to drop. I say it at Park n Shop for N112k.
Have u all noticed how difficult it is making calls on MTN these days? its so frustrating.

Posted by brym!
The N95 sells for N102,000 @ Dax Tech. My MD's PA even got a better offer of N90,000 and she's desperately looking for someone to pick her Treo 750 Windows Mobile phone. Her price? N70,000. Anyone interested?

The Evil Empire of MTN!!!

@abu: Welcome back O!
I'm not sure those guys using MTN's Xtracool package will agree with you. IMO they are a more friendlier outfit these days.
As for congestion, I read somewhere that it will be addressed sooner cos they are into another phase of expansion:building more exchanges, switches and cell sites.

@All: I was at a Celtel shop this morning where I was given a 'Celtel Access' hand bill. It explains the benefits of connecting to the net using Celtel's internet gateway, obtaining connection settings, and billing type. No new information here except that it confirms that Celtel's GPRS is now fully operational. Billing is 10k per kilobyte for both postpaid and prepaid subscribers. The attendant at the counter confirmed the billing.
So it's now official.
Goodbye Glodirect!

Ah! Celtel also has a 'mobile office' package that essentially supports push-email services and over the air synchronization of contacts, calendar and mails. This is excellent for enterprise users who desire to get info on the go from corporate servers using their supported smartphones. For this package you pay a flat monthly fee of N2,000.
Funny, glomobile is offering their Blackberry subscribers a similar service for N10,000 monthly.

Excellent. I ditched my Glo SIM just yesterday night and sent an SMS round to my contacts notifying them of my new 0808 number. Easy as that.

I'm keeping the SIM in a box somewhere for future rethinks though.

@brym & AYA, glad to see u guys are now enjoying something from Celtel. other networks positioned gprs as a thing for only the rich while Celtel did the right thing by offering cheaper gprs without a contract. What i need now is a solid phone to enjoy this Celtel offer with. i obviously cant wait for Amby's P1 so i need a good cheap symbian or WM5 devise with touch screen. Any ideas guys? it's got to be 40k or less.

Forget WM5 if your budget is 40k. SE: New P800 and P900 are definitely available within that budget.

But those two phones are old skool now.. I need something new with a good camera and probably 3g

Posted by brym!
@mamba: E go hard to get WM for that price, unless na used one. One big disadvantage of WM devices is that their prices hardly drop. For example the K-Jam released in January 2006, still sells for 80k minimum while while the price of SE's P990, which came nearly 6 months after, has dropped from over 100k to less than 60k.
You may want to check computer village, you may be lucky to get a bargain like I did.

Posted by ambyzown
@mamba: Amby's P1? I tot the P1 was made by SE?
Hmmm, Handset under N40k, consider N80 (no touchscreen), or M600i (no camera)

Posted by mamba
@amby, i was just making fun of u since ur the SE advocate on this thread. i'd rather buy a N80 instead of M600. i guess i'll just go with AYA's suggestion& get a p800 while i save more for a good WM5 phone.

Posted by brym!
@mamba: Where in Lagos will you see a P800 or even a P900 to buy? Now that issues concerning the P990 have been resolved with the fifth firmware update, it will be a great buy if you see anyone who wants to resell. Anoher option is Reltel's Treo 700p which goes for 34k with one month free browsing and reasonable pay as you browse plans. You are a Reltel subscriber, shay?

Posted by ambyzown
@Brym: Ah ah, no be lagos you dey? P800 and P900 plenty for market as Tokumbo.

By the way, I'm browsing for free this morning, don't know if its a general thing, but its worth a try.

it's been free for 3 days now.

@brym, I've used the treo and I don't like the huge antenna. Besides, is so boring. I know where to get used p800 for 15k and p900 for 20k so I guess I'll just choose one of those two or get a p910 instead.
I don't think I'll touch the p990 since I've always had such a bad impression about it from the first time I ever tried to use it.

Well, lets enjoy it while it lasts.

Does anyone using MTN in Lagos have gprs signal? I've lost the signal on my S55 for the past week and was wondering if its my phone or location thats responsible for this.

@amby: I have a staff on the MTN network who says she still browsed with her line within the last 7 days.

Hi Guys, spent the week in Sagamu. Tired as OBJ's pilot

Its is not only MTN that is messing up big time, Glo seems to have joined in. But MTN recently gave its plans to fix the mess.

Anyone interested in Open source software here? Just finished a workshop on it here in Abuja.

Are these problems we're experiencing on the gsm networks a prelude to 3G launch, or have they made enough money from the Nigerian market that they no longer care what their subscribers think? Funny, but it seems NCC has gone to sleep. what happened to the days of the peoples parliament moderated by Ernest himself?

A big hello to everyone in the house.Been out of circu for long and looking for a moderate phone.Longing for:a smart phone, 2mp camera atleast,fm radio,3G(HSPDA),plus d standard hi- end pack.
Felt P990 was okay but Mamba has shaken my conviction. What's really wrong with this phone, anyone? And what's the price. Can one get a neat but fairly used N93?I miss that phone so much.My price range? Not more than 55k

Posted by OluYom
@Ifedisky: My objective opinion is that the P990i is a very good choice (especially at the current prices). You will need to do one thing though: upgrade the firmware to the latest version. This will give you an up-to-date device with a very stable firmware and good performance. Its problem was firmware instability; but the latest firmware has been receiving cheers from hitherto frustrated users.

If you have a PC (laptop preferable), generatings set, and fast internet access, you can do the firmware update yourself. I updated my E61's firmware at home sometime ago, and it was smooth.

I've been reading some positive posts from people that have updated to the latest firmware and i guess if it's really true that the firmware is now rock solid as they say, I might just decide to try the p990 again. I'll wait for the price to drop further before buying the device, and also to make sure that it's really stable now. i wonde why it had to take a year for SE engineers to fix their problem.

Posted by Ifedisky
@Aya,Mamba.Thanks, but how much does it actually go for.Can it ,in anyway stand up to the n93 picture and video wise.Red in reviews that the screen's smaller than that of p910.How much smaller is it please.Tickled getting answers!

Posted by OluYom
@ifedisky: The P990i is available for N55k at Fleet Communications, Ikoyi (branch at Yaba as well). You may find it for less at Computer Village.

Yes, the P990i is probably about 20-30% smaller (my rough estimate; not a certain figure) than the P910i screen. As for comparison with N93, I have absolutely no idea.

Posted by brym!
The resolution of N93 and P990i are the same: 240x320 pixels but the screen size of the P990i is bigger, 41x56 mm as against 36x48 mm.

Seems like MTN has more realistic BlackBerry Connect rates than Glomobile. They are charging a maximum of N6,000 monthly for what Glomobile is charging N10,000. And it is open to prepaid and postpaid subscribers. Another monopoly broken.

Posted by ambyzown
Guys, with the P990 now being stable running on the latest firmware, I don't think the price will drop, well not before the P1i hits the markets.
@Brym: The N6k/N5k being charged by MTN includes 10mb of data download within a given month. I don't think GLO offers the same. I stand corrected.

Glo go soon drop their prices too.

please guys how much does 256mb miniSD card cost in lagos? Desperately need to upgrade my N71 memory.

Secondly i have noticed some fake phones that they are selling to unsuspecting nigerians as nokia products. Have you guys noticed them too

Posted by OluYom
@pxthomas: I've seen offers for 512mb miniSD for N4,000. Not sure about 256mb.

Posted by brym!
I got a 1GB miniSD for my device from BuyRight for N3k six weeks ago. 512mb and 256mb sell for less than N2k now.

@pxthomas:Noticed some of those fake phones in Onitsha and people do indeed buy them.Went window shopping for N95 and ended up seeing a phone that doesn't have any semblance to it at all. When I pointed this out, the girl on the front desk told me what I'm seeing is the Mp4 version!Admittedly, the phone looked good but I didn't bother to check if the feel is good in tow.But one thing's sure, people are buying!
@when is 3g launching on any of the networks?Think I'm due a p990 THEN!
Dying in silence here in Onitsha at the moment.Celtel refuses to give me GPRS settings and Glo is wonky. They keep telling me the service is suspended and this's killing me.Help!!

Posted by brym!
So, I am posting this from an N95 but I am not that impressed after all. Add a qwerty keypad to it and it would have been the Ultimate device. I got it for my boss this morning @ Slot Phones for N88.5k . Now that's one big price crash. Though, it still sells for N125k @ the Nokia Store located @ The Palms.
Now the other features...

Have you guys heard the latest on Mtel? Vodacom and Alheri (owned by dangote) are hustling for Mtel and are both offering $480m.

Vodacom again? Na wa o!

I don't see Transcorp selling off MTEL tho.

I saw the Chinese clones too here in Abuja yesterday at the GSM Village. I got an LG S3500 for 11k for me and my coz...
