@Amby, the only thing that phone has that makes it better than E61i is touch screen. The phone has not even been announced by SE yet, how u sure it's even going to surface?
I think there's still some problems with this unit and by the time it's announced, it will be old skool like p990 was in its time. I really don't have any respect for SE anymore so I'm not even enthusiastic about the phone. I'd rather buy apple Iphone, windows mobile or Nokia N95 instead of that crap.

@amby: You are just making a mountain out of a molehill. By the time this device hits the market, Nokia is likely to have something that either matches or outguns it. The new E61i already has a 2MP camera and what should be a better keyboard (that M600-style keyboard again?!).
BTW, why "E62" killer and not E61 killer? The E62 is basically a lamer version of the E61. And like I mentioned, the E61i is already on the market.
But I wish SE luck with it. I miss the SE I used to know and wish they'll release something tempting.

only se walkman phones are still ahead of thier game,i mean nokia even managed to make an 8gb music phone with 2mp and wifi...while the w950i dosent have a camera or wifi?...luckily the main function (music) works better than the nokia(or so i believe)
and nowadays things smartphones can do regular phones can do with 3rd party apps.like blackberry for instance..you can get push email on nearly all phones now.so p700 is just being overhyped by se fans..although i would prefer it to the p990(which is just a big joke as far as i am concerned) since it is smaller and has a better cam.but i am not business driven so my opinion is limited.

@Mariwun: This cannot be SE's flagship to compete with the E90. SE has nothing in that category, neither can it be aimed at the N95. This phone will be announced on May 8th (2weeks from now) and will be in the shops before Q3.
@Mamba: This phone beats the E61 hands down check the specs again. As for call handling, it also have the jog dial, remember?
This device runs on UIQ3. If you read related posts on P990i and M600i, you will find that all the bugs and issues concerning UIQ3 have been sorted out via firmware updates, so expect that to be a benchmark for this P700i. I have seen the video of the P700i in action, and believe me it is so fast. The reviews I have read based on the few prototypes in circulation have been nothing short of exhilarating. I think I'm gonna love this phone.

@Aya: I actually meant the E61, as the E62 is not a 3G phone, and has neither wifi nor camera.

@amby: I'm after a replacement for my E61, and at the moment the E90 seems to have my attention, though I prefer the E61 form factor by far - which this phone has got. Now, assuming you are right about speed and bugs, here are a few vital questions:
1. What is total RAM on this device, and how much of it is available to the user?
2. Does it have a mini-USB slot (I'm tired of proprietory slots, including Nokia's stupid pop-port)
3. If its gonna be announced in a few weeks time, when is it said to hit the market, and given SE' antecedents how are we sure that wont be a year from now? Would waiting be worth it?

72.8mb at start-up is impressive. The only thing I really dont like is the stupid lame qwerty, no call and drop button, i believe the jog is not 5-way like p**0 and all the uncertainty surrounding SE with UIQ. I hope they manage to redeem their image because if this one fails, that's the end of SE.

I am not particularly excited about that QWERTY keypad either, but it seems to have everything else I want - except the mini-USB.
To be honest - and to bash Nokia a bit - the E90 in all its glory is lame UI-wise. Its basically an advanced hardware with S60 software (No fax. Lame contacts search, and other S60 niggles) and I'm loathe to shell out all that extra money for just that.
S60 is great for non-power users, but on a communicator as it is.... tut, tut. I want a communicator, but there's much to consider before writing the cheque.
It used to be so pretty easy to choose a phone. Now one needs a degree in Rocket Science to determine what to get next! Bah!

But truly, the P700i shows a lot of promise, and I believe
can pull this off. UIQ3 was proprietary firmware, thats why it had so many bugs. The worst of UIQ3 is over.

Yep! Its not the real AYA!! I'm an impersonator. I changed the avatar because the P800 was the last SE phone I used, and I just felt like going down memory lane

Unfortunately, the P700 does not have mini-USB. I like it. I may or may not wait for it. Time will tell. I'm still shopping for an E61 replacement.

@amby: Actually, user comments discouraged me from buying the M600 in December. While user comments from my-symbian UIQ3 thread were more objectve, Esato die-hards were defending the flaws. I actually came across a post where you were asking for solutions to your pal's M600 that won't connect to PC.
Lets hope that SE's acquisition of the UIQ software firm will improve matters.
By the way, I read somewhere that Symbian is courting Windows Mobile software developers to develop apps for UIQ3 or something like that?

Yes, exactly my point, after two firmware upgrades to that M600i, my pal has been so impressed that he's sold his N70 and given the N73 to his PA. He's as eager as I am to lay hands on the P700i.
There's no amount of firmware upgrade that can make a bad phone good, it only makes a good phone better. So if UIQ3 is finally becoming stable, that can only mean better days ahead. I happen to be a lover of touchscreen devices, and UIQ is symbian's best touchscreen OS.

There is a growing presence of phone manufacturers and authorised dealers in Nigeria of recent. Nokia has an Office and unique store @ Palms. Motorola authorised dealer is somewhere in V.I. Even Windows Mobile dealers are showing up: Race Telecoms sells i-mate branded WM devices; and HTC has a local authorised dealer too.
When I get back to Lagos, I'll do some research on phones and devices offered for sale by these authorised dealers, compare their prices internationally and enquire about after sales services (repairs, software updates and warranties).

@Guys: Celtel has started charging for its gprs service, so be careful how u use it. Its still the cheapest gprs available though. 10k/kb download. So that does it for free internet on Celtel. it was good while it lasted. Next stop, free 3g testing
