I read this condition at the bottom of starcoms newspaper advert, for their new sim card.
You know those little message that doesn't get read by most people that see the advert, ie the terms and condition small charater print at the bottom of the advert page, "that the new sim card can only work on cdma type of phone" does this mean i can't slot this sim into my nokia N93?

The new sim should be supported by both gsm and cdma phones but unfortunately i don't think it works with all phones. Going by what i heard, the sim card is still kind of cdma but roams on gsm networks.

@ Abubakar:I'm still quite new to Linux myself but I must tell you,I have installed Ubuntu linux,(Version 6.06LTS)and I don't see what Windows offer's in terms of usability that Ubuntu cannot deliver. There is a newer version Edgy Edge 6.10 and a n even newer version in the works;Fiesty Fawn.Whats so nice about it is that you can actually "preview" before installing. What's more its free,@ least version 6.06LTS.It will be delivered to you.Like I posted earlier, you might to check the site www.ubuntu.com and shipit.ubuntu.com(to order)
@ all:So Starcomms just 1ted to get rid of its older stock with it so called give away prices when they were planning to run a new numbering scheme that wouldn't allow the continued use of older numbers,typical...
If their new phones will be using SIMs,I think it would be in their interest and to encourage more people to adopt CDMA if the SIMs work with GSM/(W)CDMA mobile phones.

lots of Starcomms gist today!

@area namzo 234h: to clarify things, gsm and cdma are like petrol and diesel. you cant use a cdma sim in a gsm phone. nor can you roam to gsm networks from cdma. and the new phones with sims and 0702 are also being at cheap rates ie 6k. too bad i'm not based in lag. could have gotten a bunch of customers right here!

@234h: my point about linux is just that most people aren't so engaged with tweaking thier os. most just use the basic clerical apps. i once used a linux shell that tho windows worked in the back ground i had a linux desktop interface. it was really cool, but as of that time there weren't any "use as is" linux os as there are now. those ones needed lots me tweaking to get it to your taste.

@ Abubakar:Not that I'm a Linux spokesperson or anything but I think you really should try Ubuntu.Too bad I haven't used the post ofice recently(not sure if they'll pilfer the mail),I would have gladly sent you a copy.
Are you saying the new Starcomm SIMs will not work on phones such as SE K790 or Nokia 6288 amongst others of their kind?

As long as the phones are GSM, CDMA SIMs will not work on them, and vice versa.

But I hope they would work on another CDMA network that goes the same CDMA-SIM-card route ko? For example, if Reltel does the same thing, I can just swap SIM cards and be on Reltel?

I saw the advert today...bold and impressive.

Can we configure and browse WAP sites like we do with GSM's GPRS on these new SIM cards?

Posted by abubakar
@coola: the sims btwn cdma phones should be interchangable unless they do what MTN did initially with the phones they sold, locking it to thier network.

Posted by abubakar
and sadly Starcomms doesnt sell any SE phones. Dont know if they even make cdma phones. gotta check that out.

Posted by 234hay
@ abubakar:SE does or did make cdma phones, something like the T68i. I think either Reltel or some other network does allow for such phones. However I doubt if SE still makes this phones, perhaps it wasn't so profitable at the time.
@ all:What is/are the difference(s) btw cdma and wcdma?

234hay: i know ericsson made cdmas b4 they merged with sony, the last being the t68. but i didnt know sonyericsson made a cdma t68i. wonder if i can get my hands on one? still have the detachable camera from my old gsm t68i!

my gadget addiction is kicking in and i cant get my mind off this SE watch. only got disappointed when i read you cant read texts or see track titles off it.

i read in Guardian newspaper today that 4 Alheri, Glo,MTN and celtel company's has been awarded the 3rd generation provisional licence upon the payment of $15 billion in the next 14 days.

Posted by coolapostle
Nah... it is $150 million dollars in the next 15 days. Glo and MTN should pay without any problems. But Celtel and Alheri Engineering.... that I cannot say.

Anyway, I see PNF activity zipping up again when "Free 3G" trials commence! I have not even bought my 3G phone yet. Ah! Free things.

@All I just landed PH today. I must have mentioned my desire to visit Bonny Island here sometime back. Well, 2moro I get to climb a boat and cruise down to the Island!

I have two choices: follow the commercial boats and risk being capsized or follow the Shell/NDDC ferries and risk being attacked by Sea Pirates (happened last week and two Policemen were killed).

And so... PRAY FOR ME O. If I don't make it, I bequeth all my online properties to all of you. No fighting, please.

But, jokes apart, I am a little apprehensive even though I am visiting Classmate who is one of the Joint Task Force Naval Guys. Oh the joys of being a bachelor! Adventure! (Stupid?) Risks! Excitement!

I will never try this when Mrs Coola arrives.

My brother, I have tried to reason it out that same way, but find it difficult to understand. Read up on it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W-CDMA

Back to tech gist, I got a Celtel SIM with which I've been browsing, (Don't ask me how, cos I aint telling) Now, this is the life. Fast GPRS for free and on the go!!! what is better than that?

One of the inherent disadvantages of GSM networks is their limited data capacity. WCDMA makes a way out for them.

WCDMA is a CDMA-based technology designed to introduce high-speed data on GSM networks, so even though it is a CDMA-based technology, it is neither CDMA network-compatible. Sorry, nothing you and I can do about that.

Again, as you will notice, your regular GSM phone too will not work with it. This is because it runs on a different frequency from what GSM networks run on. You need a GSM phone with WCDMA capabilities - a dual-network phone.

GSM SIMs will not automatically work on all WCDMA-based 3G phones. If the 3G phone comes with dual-network capacity i.e. GSM+WCDMA, your GSM SIM will work on it. If the phone was built strictly for WCDMA, you will need a special SIM (but thankfully I doubt if any manufacturer is stupid enough to put themselves at such a disadvantage).

Hope that helps.

@Aya: There aren't many GSM+WCDMA phones out in the market. Most of them are GSM+UMTS

@Brym: Yes o I was in the process of migrating to post paid when this offer came along, and this is so much better.

@All: I stumbled across something very interesting I want you to be a part of.

Let’s face it; we Nigerians have soiled our name completely when it comes to buying and selling online.

On EBay alone you will see items listed specifically warning Nigerians to stay away; also if you do a search for “Nigeria auction” on Google, you will only come up with results from fraud alert.

This is a pity I must say, because Nigeria is entrepreneur driven... buying and selling is in the blood.

As a result, because of many, not just a few bad eggs, this opportunity of online buying and selling has been blocked in many ways.

I would like you to join me in reviving this opportunity to allow Nigerians use the Internet for trade with a new auction platform dedicated to Nigerian Buyers and Sellers.

I really want you to be a part of this

Honestly this will probably change the way we do business in Nigeria forever.

I can't share any further details. But I can tell you this is definitely something you don't want to let pass you by.

The spaces are extremely limited and will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.

mein i checked out the link and i have a few suggestions...no.1-the story on the front page is toooo long not many people will scroll down till the end to catch the gist of the website. no.2..u r offering free money..everybody knos anything on the internet offering u anything FREE is not true in anyway.so i think u should simplify the weblayout.

@all....yes o..these stupid yahoo boys have spoilt alot of legit stuff naija people could be in.one of my friends who does business with a company based in the us (for like 4 years now) had aperson he usaully dealt with.the person was out sick once and he had a large order.the new person said that thier insurance wudnt cover him cause he was nigerian so he had to order less(he orders first and pays later) can u imagine?

We are talking about the same thing. W-CDMA is the transmission protocol (or the underlying air interface) used in the UMTS system. A lot of people are not aware of these technical details.

So note that when you see UMTS anywhere, you are looking at WCDMA.

@ aya, ambyz:Thanks for the clarification.I must admit though, its still slightly hazy.Nonetheless,if newer "clarifying clarifications" do come up,please do post.
Also,if you know of any current mobile phone that would support a Starcomm SIM and a GSM SIM @ the same time,again...please post.
@ all:it appears Dangote has his hands in a lot of pies.Just earlier in the year,it was sugar.Telecoms really is "sweet"...

@Aya: Oh, really...... I get it now. Thanks

@Mariwun: You're quite right in your assessment, but firstly, its not MY website, plus the FREE money is not as it seems, it is commission paid on referrals. I, as a matter of principle do not participate in schemes like these, but this seems real. The new auction site BidNigeria is up and running, but nobody knows about it, so as an incentive, a commission is paid to anyone who refers a new member, thus promoting the site. Not to worry, as soon as they ask me to make a payment for one sort of "processing" or the other, I'll flee.

Wow! Celtel eventually did the right thing, reduced tariff to 33k per second to all networks. Hoping to hear more juicy details in the "unity" plans.
Where did i drop those my celtel sim cards?

I'm not that impressed with peak and off-peak differences.
I'll hold on to my glo.

@Brym: what are the comparative tariffs on Glo? Cos I think Celtel's Simply Smooth is a very good package.

Posted by brym!
@amby: I can't remember glo's equivalent tariffs.
On postpaid, its 25k/s for on net calls and 37k/s for calls to other networks,

Posted by ambyzown
I've migrated to celtel's simply smooth package.
Monthly access fee is N400 and calls are charged at 59k/sec peak and 33k/sec off peak. which means that throughout this weekend, all my calls regardless of which network I'm calling will cost me less than N20 per minute. Plus I get 15 free SMS.
Hmmmm not bad!

Amby e like say we are about to see another round of competition from our gsm operator with this Celtel unity tariff.
But why did it take them this long to lower their tariff?
I will give you a call if only i can find my Celtel sim

@px: After taking over Vmobile, Celtel actually hinted that it will crash tariff in a few months( after significantly building up its already stretched capacty). MTN which had invested heavily on capacity and coverage took advantage of the information and crashed their rates sooner. Soon enough Glo followed suit. Celtel was caught napping but decided to still pursue capacity building. A big price to pay but the right thing to do. I'm happy they came up with something a little bit different by crashing the off-net rates.

Put it this way: every time you use a Microsoft product, Steve Ballmer kills a baby kitten.

Of course I'm an Apple Computer user. We Maclots are the Jedi of the computer world.

Posted by brix25
I personally use both Microsoft and Apple products in my everyday life...Apple by far more user-friendly when one consider stability as a factor. Microsoft is hated because it's big and seems not to care about improving it's products.

Posted by abubakar
apple users being jedi? what are the rest of us? wookies?

saw the text from Celtel about unity. dont know the details but i dont like plans with monthly access charges. hate the idea of being so tied to a network.

Actually, you'd be Imperial Storm Troopers in league with the Evil Empire™
I jest, of course. But that really is the attitude of a lot of my fellow Mac users. Probably a holdout from the bad old days when Apple was on the brink of death and Microsoft was poised to take over the world. Well, the computer world, anyway. They basically have taken over, so perhaps we Maclots (Macintosh Zealots) need a new metaphor. How about Microsoft as the Borg from Star Trek, assimilating everyone? "Resistance is futile!"

The basic plan on the Unity Tariffs does not have a monthly access fee, so you can stay as free as a bird...

MTN is still the best, i can only enjoy celtel during the offpeak periods, but please when does celtel offpeak start and end.

MTN is like Darth verda (evil)

Celtel is like The Galatic Sanate(always Undecided, too much talk no action)

And Global Com is like Master Yoda or Obi-wan Kenobi.(always to the rescue of the masses).

how about this comparison?

See what too much TV can cause?
@Angelgirl: off peak period on Celtel is b/w 10pm-6am monday to thursday, and from 10pm friday to 6am monday.
