Ok, I am back. More posts 2moro.

hi everybody just passing buy..hope yal had a nice vals day.about the stopping of free gprs..do any of the networks offer unlimited data packages?..4 example here in the uk t-mobile web n walk is £7.50 a month or a maximun charge of £1 per day, while three has an unlimited data package including free skype calls from ur cell and free windows live messenger for just £5 extra.logically it seems to me that networks in nigeria would make more from gprs if they followed similar pricing.

Posted by lawisong
Those Niger Delta militants are making a big mistake kidnapping innocent foreign oil workers when the real cause of their problem are the fellow nigerians in these oil companies. you wont believe, a cousin of mine working wit one of the new oil companies at Bonny once told me that when the company commenced building on their site, they employed so many indigenes of that communitity to do the unskilled labour of carrying blocks and sand and the white men wanted to pay them as much as $50 per day but the naija managers disagreed that such an amount should be paid per month rather. but when they saw that the white man was bent on paying $50 per day the naija directors quickly took over the payment and paid these indigenes $50 per week although the white man allocates $50 per day. What i'm trying to say is that most times these white men give out funds to be used for the development of the community but it is the naija directors and the so-called community and youth leaders that siphon these money for their own selfish interest, leaving the comminities to suffer. the militants should start kidnapping these evil Nigerians too, instead of keeping the innocent whitemen hostage.

Posted by abubakar
mariwan: logic has no place here. definitely if we could pay the same amount here for gprs no one would grumble. but as we pay closer to £50 a month for MTN's unlimited package, grumble we must! by now, if mobile browsing was affordable, we'd have much more activity in our local internet content scene. so many wap ideas i've had but there is no market population to sustain it.

Posted by abubakar
lawi: the problem with that is how many millions is your family or the federal govt willing to pay if to say they nab your cousin? the oil company most likely be wont as bent to secure the release of an indigene as they would an expatriate!

Posted by coolapostle
The main motive behind the kidnappings is money -in the millions from what I hear. I remember my PH pals teasing me when they visited Abuja some months back. They said something like, "Oh boy, seeeee oyibo de waka about here yanfu, yanfu... una no know say na big bucks de float around so...?"

Did u Guys hear the threats that Asari Dokubo gave his trial judge? One of these days, he may give an order for Foreigners to be killed, THEN YAWA GO GAS.

@brix I will soon give a major explanation why we seem to be fixated only on politics here.

Hi guys, anyone miss me? I guess not.
MTN connection is really a big flop. The call quality is poor, it takes forever to get a connection, and God help you if it is a Glo number you are calling.
When eventually you get connected, its either you can't hear the other party, or you hear a totally different conversation going on between two other people. I one day listened in on a lady in an office telling her friend on how she was scheming to upstage her married boss's wife on valentine day.
I guess they have taken on more subscribers than they can handle.
GPRS is another thing, its available but unusable. Once in a while, it works, but only for a few minutes, and they its back to status quo.
I think I'll have to relocate to celtel HQ until they reinstate my gprs privileges.
I even paid for a cdma internet connection on Intercellular, but its not satisfactory.
Oh Nigeria my Nigeria! One day, (hopefully in my lifetime) we will have cause to smile.
Enjoy your day guys, and keep the thread alive.

@Amby, I feel you bro.. MTN is such an unreliable network in Nigeria.
It's a known fact that glo is the best network in Nigeria, followed by Celtel.
If you are still interested in browsing on your Celtel, check and see if you have the GPRS active first. I have 3 lines and can still browse on one of them after tweaking the settings.
If you are interested in CDMA internet, I would suggest you try Multilinks.

Hallo.LTNP.There's this name I coined for mtn: "419 in yellow",they are always looking for ingenious ways to fleece their customers.GPRS is slowly taking aback seat in Europe and the far East and mtn still find it difficult to have it present in all parts of Nigeria.
Rather strange for a company thats claims to be largest mobile company in Africa and the Middle East when they can't even get their "50 free MMS" to work.Maybe its their South African origin that's worrying them as it is with their "cousins";Multichoice.
We'll wait and see what comes out of the 3G license auction...
To other matters, elections are just around the corner;according to the INEC timetable anyway, but things don't seem to be getting any 'rosier'.Baba 'Yabo has said the election is a do or die affair for the Peoples Destruction Party(PDP).let him remember that not all of us have armoured personal carriers or kevlar to prevent accidental discharge....We are watching and PRAYING...

@Amby Your complaints are noted.

Here is mine: MTN gave away my number to another fella in PH. This is my first number that I bought for N20,000 a few weeks after GSM came into town! I actually lost it and when I found it, it had been "withdrawn".

Then my pals started telling me of someone else answering when they called me. This is the number on all my Complimentary cards and e-Zine archives. But when I called the fella... fuming, huffing n puffing.... he calmed me down and said he bought it officially! So I really can't blame him.

I will be writing my official complaint to the NCC soon. MTN has 0803, 0806 and even 0703 number ranges but they still poached my N20,000 line.

Posted by mamba
these mobile operators are really having a good time in Nigeria. subscribers keep increasing daily in thousands despite the fact that services they offer is the poorest in the whole world. it's becoming more difficult for MTN to manage its customer base and build capacity to match up to the mobile craze in the country. @coola, send your complaint to NCC though nothing might come out from it if they end up reading the terms on MTN SIM pack

You see this is the thing;to most of the foreign firms that come into this country aided of course by the ruling elite,Nigeria is one very a massive public laboratory where every1 and any1 can come in to perform experiments of every nature and kind. And they needn't be bothered about labrats when there's about(according to the last census)140million of them(thats us) to experiment own.
Until the 'lab technicians' and or 'assistants' lay down proper rules for the conducting of experiments in the laboratory, then the 'scientists' might as well burn down the whole lab and the labrats with it.
Of course, they'll(the scientists) will find other labs eithr to burn down or build up.That largely rests with the lab technicians...Have I said anything?

Posted by coolapostle
Yeah! You are a labrat! hehehehehe

The gprs symbol on my phone is detached, but I hear that if I migrate to post paid, I will get gprs back, but not for free. Its worth a try, I'll give feedback on monday.
I don't have a multilinks line, & I'm not willing 2 acquire yet another line, I want 2 make use of the ones I have.

Between an mp3 player and a cool camera, which do you prefer in a mobile??? Let's hear...

Multi-links just came into Abuja. I bought a Reltel two weeks ago. The network is wack. But Multilinks has no major incentive that I can think of. Or is there? With Reltel, Family and Friends, I can call for FREE any local Reltel line (A N67 daily deduction is the price I pay. Works about to 2k/mo). Thats why I bought it... though the next stage is to buy the Reltel lines for my gf(s) so that I can talk to her/them as long as I want. The Kyocera phone that it came with cost 4k.

Who uses Multilinks here?

Posted by mariwun
i definately prefer a camera.my w950 dosent have one but the mp3 player is awesome..very rich sound.i listen to it while commuting on the train and bus and i dont even miss d camera!

Posted by abubakar
@coola: Starcomms is coming to Abuja soon so expect to see me witrh my marketing team!!! You must aid us in selling 1000 phones (only)!!!! Your cut will be inside of course!!!! Abi i can give you a free phone for your efforts?

As for camera vs MP3, i listen to music in my car, on my laptop and at home. The camera takes much more precedence. I snap my son every other day. You didnt chip in your own thots on it!!! but the score is

CAMERA 1: MP3 1

Posted by mamba
i can do without camera on my phone but would definitely like to have mp3. that's cos i would rather buy a dedicated camera that is best suited for taking superb pictures rather than waste money on an ipod or music player if i can have that on my phone.

Posted by ambyzown
I'd prefer to have an mp3 player over a camera on my mobile because I've gotten so used to music on my phone that I doubt I can do without it. I even have it hooked to my car's stereo, that I hardly play cds anymore.
My phone's built in camera has come in handy on several occasions, but I don't use it everyday like I do my mp3 player.

Hi Guys, I guess everyone is ok.
I finally got my internet access via intercellular working, and I'm amazed at how effective it is. Its fast and steady. Though I have the 6pm to 6am slot which I think has reduced traffic.
I went to Celtel on Monday, and confirmed that gprs was exclusively reserved for contract lines and would cost 10k/kb download, which so far is the cheapest in the market.
However, they have a package to be launched within the next two weeks that costs N20k for 1month unlimited gprs usage, a provisioned and dedicated gprs SIM and a pcmcia gprs card.
After weighing my options, I decided in favour of internet via cdma, as it made more sense (pennywise).
@Coola: whats the latest from Mudabala? you seem to be in the know

Posted by mamba
amby, how much is the intercellular plan? i thought there was an unlimited gprs plan of 12k from glo and mtn

Posted by abubakar

Land slide victory for the MP3!!!!

@Amby: 20 k is too steep, especially if good service is coming from competition for 12k. Are they even aware of what is happening outside thier offices? Give us the gist on Intercellulars offer.

Posted by ambyzown
@Abu: The N20k is the initial payment for one month's access plus the cost of the gprs card and activated SIM. subsequently, you decide your package.
1. Pay as you use @ 10k/kb
2. Unlimited access for N10k/month

@Mamba: The Intercellular access cost 6k per month for the 6pm to 6am slot. After my experience with MTN's gprs these past two weeks, I'd be stupid to pay for unlimited access, only to be deprived of the access due to technical issues.

I went to get a nokia 9300(My i-mate Jam is still down) at Saka Tinubu and stopped over at Reltel Office:
24/7 browsing is 15k. 8am to 8pm is 10k. 8pm to 8am is 5k.
Pay as you browse(PAB): 10hrs is 1k, valiidty 7days. 40hrs is 3k,validity 21 days. 100hrs is 5k, validity is 30 days. 250 hrs is 10k, validity is 45 days.
Weekend: 8pm Friday to 10pm Sunday is 3k monthly.
Treo 650 CDMA smartphone goes for 40k with one month free browsing while Samsung i700 pocket pc goes for 28k, also with one month free browsing.
Widest data options I must say.

Posted by coolapostle
But these internet rates will mean that you buy one of the desktop terminal and not any of the cool handphones ko ?

OK, MP3 wins over Camera. That was my choice too.

I promised Brixy an explanation on why we seem to gravitate towards politics.... here goes...

Where ever two or three Nigerians are gathered, it seems we only talk about politics. I am sure even in heaven and hell -in between the praising or the gnashing of teeth- Nigerians are talking about Politics.

Why?

It is because politics is the only booming made-in-Nigeria product today. The Courts are busy. The Police is busy. The Printers are busy. The Newspapers are busy. The Prez is busy. We all are busy. Thanks to politics.

It is proving to be good for our life expectancy. Politics is helping many old, expired, dinosaurs have a reason to live longer so that they can plot, fight and maybe win. (Many have crossed 70 years in the process... PDP Chairman Ahmadu Ali was 71 today!)

Besides, Naija life is boring. NEPA, GSM, Unity Schools, el Rufai, etc. But politics... ah

Posted by brix25
Ah coola, you've put it all into perfect context for me. Thanks.
Is El Rufai still a demolition man?

@brix25 and coolapostle: It's partly this new-found devotion of this thread to politics that keeps me from posting. I visit fairly often, but I certainly do not want to talk about politics, and that's usually what's on the table often. I was under the impression that we were here because of mobile phones. But - hey - freedom of speech and all that

Posted by brix25
@AYA: Your inputs have certainly been missed on this thread but with an election next month things will be hotting up in Naija. Will they even have an election in the Delta region with all the unrest that's been happening there? Heard that it resembles the wild west.

Posted by ambyzown
@Aya: nice of u to drop in again after such a long time. It isn't all the time that there is gist on mobile phones & telecoms, so in between tech gist, rather than leaving the board without posts, we talk about politics & personal issues or experiences. I believe thats what keeps this thread interesting.
Ok, from now on, less politics and more tech gist. Agreed?

But honestly, you guys just get on and enjoy yourselves. I'll chip in when there's something up my alley on the table.

@all: Esato's new look is very interesting!!! It will ake a bit to get used to though!!!

As about the deal for more techgist, less politics, it will be a hard hill to climb. once we start talking about why certain things are not available (network service, valueadded service, expansion etc) policy gist starts which slides to politic gist. any how, its all good.

Im still waiting for my savior wifi phone!!!!!

Posted by Angelgirl
Hi all, i think i prefer the tech gist more than the politics.

Please mamba how did you normally 'tweak gprs settings to work for you'.

Posted by mamba
@Angel, you have to find out if you have the GPRS signal on your celtel line first before trying to tweak anything. if it's available, there are couple of APN's you could use to enjoy free GPRS.

Posted by Areafada
Nice to notice that this thread is returning back to tech gist. does any members of PNF have Nokia N95? i am just curious to know how it is (usage).

Posted by ambyzown
I didn't realise so many people were staying away because of political gist, well welcome back to you all.
Quotes don't come out as before after the esato facelift.

News! Celtel wins brand of the year award. And to celebrate this, the company is giving half price calls and sms (on net) from midnight tomorrow till 6am on monday. Nice eh?

Posted by OluYom
@amby: All these fly-by-night offers by the GSM companies is just a facade. Who will I be calling at 2a.m. at night? No-one who knows me will certainly call me at that time too - except on an absolute emergency.

Celtel came in with a lot of noise, but we see very little in terms of innovative delivery of services or pricing. I'm not impressed.

All telcos seem to have become lottery houses - instead of offering real value. It is sickening, in my opinion. But my opinion may not necessarilly count now, you know.

@mamba: I checked that guy at Ladipo a week after, he didn't have accessories for the ppc phones which raised my suspicion that the phones were stolen abroad and moved down here. So, I let it pass. Thanks for the info.

Posted by mamba
@brym ur right, those phones might have been stolen. didn't think of that when i bought mine.

Posted by brix25
@areafada: No-one in the world owns a final release N95...Nokia are probably still sorting out glitches. Some MTN stores have already advertised that they'll stock this device but we'll only be able to get at the most ridiculous price. Seriously, there are better things to spend my hard-earned money on.

Posted by ambyzown
@Mamba: don't go feeling guilty, because not all the phones sold at Ladipo are stolen. I actually think less than 5% are stolen. However, I can't say the same about computer village Ikeja.
@Aya: the half price calls on Celtel to Celtel lines being offered is not for midnight calls only. Its for the whole day 2moro. But I agree with u on the lottery angle.

Posted by mariwun
i plan on getting an N95 when it comes out just to play with it.should be out any minute now..alot of people are into phone insurance scams.they claim thier phones are stolen then the phones get blocked. but they will work outside the country so they send them back to nigeria.and they get brand new ones free. or for as little as £20....so it could be possible that the phone was stolen

So who are the people running these insurance scams? Nigerians? You should hope that some of the closet racists don't read this post because there'll be a lot of backlash.
Just from what I've heard the N95 will be more than $500 when it comes out...so if you choose to insure it will cost you a heck of load of cash.
But I doubt anyone in Europe just "loses" their precious phones to get back at insurance companies, all likelihood is that the phone you are getting relatively cheap in Naija was stolen.

Hit me again: I CAN CALL ON MY CELTEL FOR FREE ALL WEEKEND?

On Celtel: The new bosses sound funny. With Glo and MTN sucking up their customers by the minute, I was shocked to read some weeks back that Celtel WON'T be reducing tariffs. So what is their strategy? Nothing! They must be having a re-think after it was reported that MTEL had shrunk from over 1 million to 700,000 subs.

@Amby: I will dust off my Celtel SIM and you can tell me the story of your life ALL DAY tomorrow.

@Abu: Yeah... the new Esato look... tricky...even finding the reply-with-quote.
