I would suggest they make do with Transtel and come up first with something new in the industry like 3g & edge. if they can silently do this and make a lot of noise with it, they could squeeze out small money from data fans like us. Apart from that, I really don't know what those guys can do to revamp the poor image of nitel & Mtel.

@Brym: since you seem to be the ranking authority on WM devices here, can u please tell me why I cant enter a number to dial for an infrared modem without the os inputing the country and area codes for me? see photo attached

Transtel.... ok... who is next? A free recharge card for the accurate Prophet.
But, honestly, MTEL and Nitel with 3G and EDGE? Haba Mamba.
U must have fallen for all the Madam Ndidi yarns. She is a Stock broker not a telecoms expert. All that big talk about 1 billion dollars to revamp Nitel.... as if them go pick am for tree.

Was it something I said?????
Posted by ambyzown
Trust me coola, its nothing you said. Posts to this forum have been like celtel gprs, it comes in spasms

Since i put up my MTN number, GPRS service has been off!! Is this just here or nation wide?
@all: thinking of getting a wifi phone..... any suggestions?
Posted by mamba
get a Nokia or Windows mobile. Nokia is a lot cheaper than WM phones though.

@Abu: MTN gprs is fine here, so I guess its just ur end. You could try rebooting ur phone.
As regards WiFi, mamba is right nokia is ur best bet. Choose between the communicator, E-series or N80

Amby ê be like say you nor dey sleep. Your last post was made at 4.55am. Anyway how far? Do you know the price of nokia 93i when it becomes available

Hallo.1st and foremost, I think the topics on this forum should be posted in order of how recent each post rather than oldest to newest.
Its good to be here and I look forward to making my own humble contributions.
While I look forward to the turn around Transcorp is going to give Nitel/M'tel, I hope it won't be plagued by the proverbial 'Nigerian factor'.I believe they'll be doing a massive expansion 'coz as i believe(I stand to be corrected) they have > a million subscribers
How's that for starters...
Posted by ambyzown
Welcome to PNF 234hay, we all have our fingers crossed in anticipation of Transcorp's restructuring of Mtel/Nitel. By default forum posts on esato are sorted in the order old to new, its not our making here.
@pxt: I woke up & couldn't get back 2 sleep, hence the 4:55am post. N93 is already in the market, I guess u meant N95? No idea on the price.
@All: Celtel free gprs ends 2moro, could this be the begining of the end of Celtel? Comments pleasese

@Amby, where did u get the info about celtel gprs ending today? If that's the case, i think they'll be making a big mistake.
The Nokia N93i is a smaller version of the huge N93 and comes bundled with a reduced battery capacity. The trade-off here would be size and weight over battery life cos both phones have the same features.

I haven't heard about the N93i either.I'm very sure of the N95.However I wouldn't rule it out as you can always trust "Nocare" for churning out phones that are like six and half a dozen a great deal of the time.
As for Celtel ending its gprs promo;true or false,I haven't been able to browse for since November 2006.I must admit though, they tried.MTN could only manage 30days of free browsing(on-net MMS is free though) before they started billing.
Hope the new entrant;the UAE company has a lot to offer...
Posted by ambyzown
@pxt: Isn't the N93i the TV capable phone? Its already been released in a few european countries.
@mamba: the N93 and N95 do not share the same form factor. N93 is closer to the N90 in terms of looks.
Celtel sent me an sms indicating the end of free gprs from 25th January. I guess they only sent it to active gprs users.

The N95(coming soon) is based on N80 design (Slider phones)
While the N93i(coming soon) is based on N93 (flip/twist design)
I'm still waiting for celtel to send me the same message, abi they want me to keep enjoying it for much longer.. @Amby, I'm sure they sent u the SMS cos they are aware of the number of GB's you've downloaded free..
I even heard that they have yawa with NCC cos of some fraudulent 419'ers using the free celtel gprs to do their runs

Welcome 234. You have crossed the one-post mark. I was getting tired of welcoming ppl who just post and vanish. Hope u enjoy ur stay.
Will Mudabala offer anything new? Well, maybe they should make Adenuga the Chairman.... then they can stand a chance. MTN and Glo both have 10 million subs and SIM cards are virtually free. I think the winners will be our Telecoms Engineers who will now move over to chop the petro-dollars.
Did U Guys hear the rumour two days ago that Baba had kicked the bucket (or barrel) ? The idea of it all and the confusion it would cause to the FGN, pro-Baba Ministers, PDP, EFCC and the Elections had us all laughing. Boy.
Posted by ambyzown
Of course not Abu, I just bookmarked the last page, and loaded that page whenever I needed to visit the forum
Do you have the blue gprs symbol at all?
Coola whats Mudabala?
[ This Message was edited by: ambyzown on 2007-01-24 15:11 ]
Posted by coolapostle
Mudabala Development Corp of UAE just paid 400 million dollars for a fifth GSM network.
Posted by abubakar
@coola: its like a cycle. can you remember back in 1999, a similar rumour went out before obj's inauguration. in lag, streets were emptyane hoodlums looted shops. have you heard the one about stella being alive and well?
@ambyz: before, the blue gprs tag was constant. then strangely it would only show when accessing a gprs service, eg sending an mms.funny huh? now its blank. only Mtel is up.
Posted by 234hay
@ abubakar: I don't kno if you've tried this but maybe u either request for the settings again('Settings' to 3888) or switch of your phone for about a minute then switch on again.
If the UAE guys are going to be doing anything new I hope one of them will be Push Email services.Only then will the capabilities of the P990,M600 & W950 be reaaly appreciated. That has been the main thrust behind the Blackberry
Posted by ambyzown
@234hay: push email is already available on all four networks in Nigeria. All you need 2 do is download Emoze on your device and you're set. Emoze is free to download and use.
By the way, what handset do you use, and on which network are u?
Posted by mamba
@Amby, what's this emoze thing, and where do we download from? Is it similar to flurry?
Posted by Areafada
@mamba visit www.emoze.com
Posted by ambyzown
@Areafada: you still dey? Happy new year o
@Mamba: I don't know about flurry, but I can tell you that Emoze is a push email and PIM service rolled into one just like blackberry. But not all handset types are supported yet. Use the link areafada posted.
@All: officially Celtel free gprs ended yesterday, so this should be my last post with free Celtel. I anxiously await their tariff structure.
Posted by abubakar
@234hay: like i said before i've tried everything but throw away the phone. Thanx anyway. think gprs is not workin here.
i think i might revert back to the old russian opera version. it seems to be better suited to my needs.
back to politics for a sec.
POLL: WITH ALL PRESIDENTIAL TICKET OUT, WHO IS UR CHOICE FOR 2007?
back to techgist:
would mudubala(?) launch by mid 2007?
Posted by coolapostle
@Abu... Is this not a repeat?
Well, I would say Yar' adua.
We don't need another Military Man (Buhari). I am also certain Yar'adua will rebel against Baba one day. But these are all compromises. The really great candidates stepped down.
@Amby Why not use Celtel today and calculate the tariffs for us?
Posted by abubakar
hehehe! yeah amby! jump on the grenade for us!
@coola: i dont care if its exmilitary or not. i want good governance. Yaradua has nothing to show for in his state after 8yrs. Buhari has at least his HOS and PTF record.
still waitin for an SE Wifi phone suggestion.
Posted by mamba
I really don't want anybody associated with PDP as my next president as far as I'm concerned. I'd rather give the fresh boys like Utomi or Chris if I could. Those old babas have been in Govt and done nothing so why allow them. At least let's change things for once.
@amby, I guess celtel is still free, pls confirm for us abeg "jump on the grenade"
@Abu, the only available wi-fi phone from
is p990i, and I guess u dont wanna buy that. I really dont trust any UIQ 3 phone right now even if they do release firmware from now till infinity.. IMO, it's a complete failure from SE.
If u need a wi-fi phone, just forget SE and buy a Nokia N80, E61, E70 or even Nokia 9500 which is now very cheap..
Posted by abubakar
utomi is at least an intellectual aristocrat. chris is a joke. spouting good intentions isnt a presidential attribute i'm lookin for
Posted by Angelgirl
Amby if celtel has started charging as u said, let us know so i can call cc to restore my gprs, though i calld cc 2 days ago and was told dey are still upgrading, mtn wap n mms has been down in my end for days, am making use of my glo 4 now.

that great. i hope you have been writing that novel we spoke about!
@ambyz: flurry is askin for a american phone number. do i just give then a fake 212 number? do they use it for anything?
i got a message from ebay saying i haven't paid for an item i never bought. have any of you gotten somethin similar?
Posted by 234hay
@ambyzown: I use a Sendo X and I'm on the glo-mobile network.
Posted by 234hay
@ all:Personally, regarding the ambitions of Buhari and IBB,I think they are looking for an opportunity to set things right based on what had happened with their administrations in the past.
I do hope the new mobile company will be giving free offerings,it needn't be as long as either glo or celtel's offer, but I hope it is much longer than mtn's 30-day stint
Posted by Angelgirl
Abu: i didnt write any novel but i read a lot, the one dat inspired me most was 'How To Stop Worrying And Start Living' by Dale Carnegie. I think its a book everyone should read.

Hi guys, I've been without gprs 4 almost a week now & its like I haven't had a fix in days.
I've tried jumping on d grenade, but there's no gunpowder in it. Gprs has been detached on all Celtel lines until commercial launch.
MTN gprs has been down 2 & only came up last nite. So 4 now, MTN has become my defacto service provider.
@Abu: I know next 2 nothing about flurry mail, but if they may send ur activation code 2 d number u provide.
Posted by mamba
Celtel is off for now and I guess the next time it comes on will be with the billing plan onboard.
Posted by brix25
Why is it taking so long for Nigerians to get stable data services.
Posted by namzo
I guess i'm d only one who's still browsing free with ma celtel line. i thought it was meant 2 end on the 25th but i still surf 4 free.
