MTN'S rate crash has extended to postpaid customers. Who can beat this?
Monthly Access: 1,500
MTN 2 MTN : 27k/sec
MTN 2 Others : 37k/sec
MTN 2 MTN SMS: N5
SMS 2 Others: N12
Int. calls: 67k/sec
GPRS: 60k/kb
Unlimited GPRS: N12,000/month
I called Glo customer care to inform them of these rates and warned them that I'll drop my postpaid line by month end if they have no response MTN's offer.
Good running MTN, keep it up!

@brym: Come.... what is MTN "actually" doing? Are they so threatened by Celtel that they are now pulling out all stops, giving so many services and low prices that they neglected to do all this time? If we had seen this type of competition 5 yrs ago where would we have been by now?

@abu:Glo is really reeling in Adenuga's absence.Their control is just centralized.Heard the Oga has left London for Ghana and would be back by weekend after being guaranteed safety by Baba Aremu. In one week Glo will cancel that hoarse tariff they released just to "hold body" for a more wholesome one;watch out!On the networks, well,MTN has proven over time that their network is sub par(documented surveys)They only believe in ramping up subscriber figures. Now that Glo has nearly caught up with them they're re-strategising quality wise.Their call clarity has been improving of late but,one must confess, this slash has caught even them off stride. The initial midnight tariff slash for their anniversary was largely ignored by subscribrs so the present plan was based on the premise of low midnight traffic not knowing that Nigerian consumer behavior is largely unpredictable.I think Glo can weather the storm.they really have a superb network going by the voice quality.Let Oga come back first. The battle's just begun!

Celtel will keep losing subs on a daily basis to MTN or Glo while they try to turn Vmo into a proper Cel-clone. Instead of looking at the GSM war that is breaking out all around them, they are busy launching Me2U and Celtel 50. All these are offered in every Celtel network. See the Nigeria page @ Celtel.com
@Amby ... vampire hours? Great name.
@Abu and others ooogling at us MTEL GPRS guys:
The party is over. MTEL cleared out my N410 yesterday when they started billing. I saw a "negative" balance of -N30.00 before i made enquiries. They are charging N6/minute...
And yes, I am upset.
@All "Glo vs MTN" is what I wrote about this week.
Did you know Glo grew by over 3 million subs this year? Meanwhile MTN is yet to grab one million new subs since December 2005. As I wrote in the article, "MTN Strategists must be having sleepless nights... and a few ulcers."

@AYA Take a good look at these rates again. I really don't see the big advantage. U may get 33k/sec all-round for just N500 monthly access on the new Xtra Special product. Why are they keeping datas rate so high????
The rest are just tiny savings that may not amount to much. Most Big Boys cannot even send a proper SMS without assistance.

@coola: Why is this directed at me? That was brym!
But anyway, you must understand that brym! and I are a little different from the average consumer. Personally, I make VERY few calls. My GSM monthly bill from GloMobile usually indicates 85% of my usage is GPRS and 10% SMS. The rest is call usage.
I can guess that brym! was looking at the fixed monthly GPRS rate, because that's the attraction for me too. It currently beats what Starcomms, Multilinks, Intercellular, GloMobile - name it - are offering for internet access.
For me, a flat monthly billing for GPRS means bye-bye to obscene internet access spending! I have already approved for my key mobile staff to be allocated MTN contract lines and subscribe for the unlimited GPRS thing shortly.
If GloMobile responds before they do, we will share the cake between them and MTN. If they do not, too bad: MTN will carry the day.

@amby: I'm a model so I cant post up my photo without getting paid!!!! All these late night call options are not too attractive to me. (though i bought a MTN line day before!!!) If they give cheaper calls at off-peak, say 15-20 bucks a min, that will be a real deal.
@Ifed: lets see what happens by this xmas. It might be a real royal rumble!!!
@areaf: you remind me of a friend that says she doesnt have time to call or text becos of work. Like it takes a brain surgeon to post up while eating lunch. Carry go!!!!
@coola: didnt i come up with the "vampire" hours? No copyright!!!!! they cant charge gprs per min. it has to be per kb.
Posted by pxthomas
@abu...haba! 15-20k per sec.
well it will surely come to that in the nearest future

Oh, sorry... must have missed the post. Wonderful term Abu.
Talking about Vamp Hours, I will be available on weekends for anyone interested. Yes, it is difficult gettin someone u can disturd at that strange hour.... but I did repay someone who had called me before. The call quality on Glo was good. And I didn't dial more than once.
My Glo is: 0805-505-6747 (most of the old-timers already have it)
My MTN is... er... I never really memorised the number. One of those pick-n-use SIM's.
@AYA ...sorry o! I guess I just associated u with a Contract Package... like Amby did with CDMA some posts back. I wonder why that is happenin
@Abu Nope, I asked for confirmation from my pal and he said it was N6/min and not per kb.
I noticed NO ONE is crying with me over the end of the MTEL GPRS party? hehehe... God de. Eat alone and die alone.

One mans poison is another mans meat. While amby and mamba and dropping Celtel, it has now become my hot favourite because it is the only way I can browse the net for free. After abandoning it for months I have just gotten Celtel wap working again. I am using it now for this post. Speed is great probably because I am the only person in Abuja using it. The internet via pc is proving tougher. So, guys, just dont chew the sim yet.

Ok, finally got the Celtel GPRS for free internet access. It worked with the old IP address. But the speed is pathetic. Can't get anything worthwhile done at these speeds: Max 1.3 KB/s Download speeds of 0.1-2.5? Haba?

@pxth: Dont allow those old claims that the GSM cos have been giving to fool you. If PTOs could survive on making local tariffs less than N10 why cant the GSM cos? its not magic. The major drawback is thier reluctance to expand thier equipement. The more subscribers they can handle simultaneously, the less the costs will be. They want to milk the nation with the least capital input and most profit generated output. NCC is supposed o be our saviour, but with them INCREASING interconnection fees for PTOs, who's side are they on?

I agree with Amby. i will call my guy to find out. But since its not a CSD connection, i wonder how they can do that

The NCC had some consultants work out these figures since the networks have refused to work things out themselves. What stops them from collectively reducing the price of SMS? it has remained at N15 for five years! If they (the GSM Guys) had met and dropped the interconnection fee from N18 to N13-14, we would have been fooled into praising them for reducing the rate. But, no, they refused until the NCC waded in. Now it is like N12.
Moreover, the PTO's are not complaining. They seem to be happy that they cam make more ARPU.
I see them rushing free all-night calls too just to remain relevant.

Dont say that! So many people I know are now using thier pto phones less and less since this happened. It makes more sense to put all your money in one gsm phone and go for one off the special packages aimed at high loaders rather than put small in pto, small in gsm1, small in gsm 2

haba Abubakar, dont b that hard on me, PNF is quite addictive, interactive and engrossing, once u r hooked it becomes difficult to let go, the engrossing part of PNF is that u ave to read every post and also contribute intelligently, that why it's time consuming and if u miss a days or two post God help cause u ave to read over almost every post so as to contribute intelligently to the topic on board without sounding like a round peg in a square hole.

What does this- "Sub-Saharan Africa's biggest cellular operator" -phrase mean?
I hope MTN has not given up the prize for "Africa's biggest" and is resorting to inventing its own title.
But, the move will bring (DS)TV on Mobile to many countries where MTN is in operation. I only hope the battery life holds up. Good move.
When wil MTN Nigeria start giving us phones free on contract?
Posted by ambyzown
@Brix25: Thats good news, but for us here to take advantage of this, we still need UMTS or at least EDGE to enable us stream video.
I connected to a site called FreebeTV but was unable to view any images as my data connection was too slow.
@Abu: Thats exactly what has happened in my case, I have not loaded my intercellular land line for almost a week.
@Coola: I have neither abandoned nor chewed my Celtel SIM. I'm actually making this post with my celtel SIM, and the connection speed is much faster than yours. I'm getting about 6-7kbps.
I thought you guys knew that the real reson for the increase in interconnect rates for PTO's was actually to make NITEL more profitable for its new owners when they leave office, and not neccesarily because the PTO's weren't making money.
Posted by brix25
@amby: It's quite simple...DVB-H is NOT a streaming medium so you don't need high bandwidth (3G/EDGE) to use the service. It's broadcast to cellphones from a tower, from what I've heard the picture quality is quite good.
Posted by pxthomas
Mtn launches first phase of of the largest capacity fibre optic cable available anywhere in africa. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
@brix... Which phones can one use for this mobile tv?
Posted by brix25
@pxthomas: Right now it's the Samsung P910 and the Sagem MyMobile TV...but the former is available as an exclusive through MTN.
Basically it's going to work out like this, MTN will provide the phones and DStv will provide the service.

I assume there is nothing from nokia or sony ericsson for now. Well, i think it is going to be exciting for those who can afford the phones and subscription.
Like i read from the link from your post, it says it is only commercially available in Italy and Vietnam presently. Just imagine Vietnam. Apart from that Vietnam war i can't think of anything from that country. It is time to check that country out.

@ALL Celtel says there is no more "validity" periods. So why is my WAP and internet refusing to go? I JUST KNOW they want me to load more credit. My M-Tel has spoilt me so... I am reluctant to bother browsing the 'net with my Celtel... just too slow to do the mega-downloading I am always involved in.
I want to download and test a "tunneler" called Your-Freedom. It is 25MB. With M-Tel + Free Download Manager I could get it done... but Celtel...

brother coola i am not dreaming. Right price for me could be N1000.00. But i know that an average Nigerian would not be able to be afford it. Just remember that most guys stopped browsing with their phone when mtn and glo started charging for their gprs
Posted by brix25
@pxthomas: 1000 Naira is too cheap a price. Consider this: In South Africa people pay the equavalent of 7560 Naira for DStv's top package which consists 55 channels. For a package of 11 channels you'll pay 3361 Naira.
Right now they're not saying much about pricing but it should come in just slightly below the last figure should the service launch commercially next year...right now it's free in all the major cities except Durban.
Posted by coolapostle
TV on m Mobile? Well, that is worth trying.
On second thought, the elite in Nigeria will love that. One more way of showing they are in another class! Especially if they get one bill instead of two.
If Dstv's price was as reasonable as 3k, they would not have had problems here in 9-ja.
@All Any comments on the "Bayelsa Approach" that has claimed the third Governor?

From what I read in Prodigits, Celtel cut-off many subs so that they can continue the GPRS upgrade. Someone confirmed from Celltel CC. But, I trust Amby... he is a secret Celtel Executive Director thats why he was spared. Another example: my Celtel SIM does not support Opera mini, but Amby's own does.
Who wants to receive a Glo mid-night call? No matter how I try, I cannot seem to sleep b4 2am these days.... I really have problems.
