@PXTH: All the hype behind 0806 was just that....HYPE!!! MTN does not have 10,000,000 active subscribers. At best (but i doubt!!!!) they have sold over 10,000,000 lines.

@aya: What has Celtel done (again) that you need to call CC? that might clarify your dislike of the network. Last time i got Vmobs CC was 2004 but it wasnt a complaint per se, it was some info i needed, but i can guess how frustrating it is. Last i knew, there was a maze of options by that slightly irritating voice, that takes you no where after 10 mins of pressing numbers. Havent tried it this year though.

@all: Nigeria is 46. We are in trouble oooooo!

Happy birthday nigeria ! Well so sorry that 46 notin to write home about for those who have found asylum some where else. Sorry for them away and we at home. Well all still happy birthday.

@coola: 20,000,000 subscribers, most that cant afford to make 20 mins of phone calls a day!!!!! Is that progress? NO!!!!!!!

Hey guys, where's the believer spirit in you all? The first step towards solving our problems is admitting they exist and identifying them. corruption is our nemesis, and I appreciate Mr President's effort in this regard. Can u imagine that 32 out of 36 state governors are corrupt. Yuk! well done Mr. Ribadu
Someday, we'll make it out of the woods.

IS OBJ NOT CORRUPT?

OBJ will be corrupt after May 2007... right now he is an angel.

One thing I am sure... Ribadu will have his pound of OBJ when ever he leaves office.... the boy is NOT that loyal

In one way or another we all share in the guilt of corruption. Look around you... the Police, the "Area Boy", the pen robbers, the Publc Officers, your Governor, my Governor, [GULP] YOU and of course Me

The only straight person in Nigeria is Nuhu Ribadu.

Configuration settings and tariffs for data on GSM networks

@Aya... I was happy to see your info on the networks were all up-to-date. Good job.

@amby What speed do u get with Vmobile internet these days? The GPRS thing comes on and off these days.

@All... Here are the latest moves by our over-lord El-Rufai (The Lion of Abuja):

- All commercial motorbikes banned from the city
- All commercial motorbikes banned from the satellite towns after 6pm
- All commercial buses to be banned from the city as from November 13th 2006
- People are trekking everywhere in Abuja.... "the capital of Africa" according to El-Rufai.

I hope he is happy.
I hope his Oga is happy.

i suppose they want to make Abuja look like Paris or London overnight. These cities did not develop in 4 months.
what are the alternatives provided by el Rufai? Maybe after this all the roads leading to Abuja will have this sign- SEE ABUJA AND DIE

@AYA...Thanks for the configuration settings

Posted by abubakar
@pxth: You know, Abuja is among the ugliest amongst the new cities in the world (if not the ugliest!!!!). I have to commend El-Rufai for his efforts but its his methodology i disagree with. Getting ride of the Okadas is a good idea but we need a better public transport system on ground first. In other new cities and in most developed cities, you can get to a bus stop within 500m from any point of the city, thus reducing the trekking distances. The most of the bus stops in Abuja cant even take the new buses they got without blocking traffic they should have thought of straightening all that out 1st.

Another problem is police presence. Can yu beleive in "Africa's Capital" we dont even have 1 police car patroling the streets at night? Why wouldnt we have a soaring crime rate? With the thousands of jobless Okada guys around, how many will sell thier bikes to buy guns to visit Coola at night? We should have a minimum of 10 cars, 1 in each district, with armed police patroling the streets overnight with another 10 available for backup. Its silly that we cant have that but our ministers, senators etc have motorcades following them about.

@amby: dont count your chickens quite yet!!! Accusing 30+ govs is not the same as convicting them!!! I read the next day after his announcement that OBJ said he only knew of 2 or 3 people that were being investigated. What does that mean? He didnt mention names but that means those slots or being kept for any and all who piss him off over the next few months!!! Also the fact that OBJ can now say that he thinks only 2 or 3 govs are corrupt is silly!!! How stupid do they take us for? (and how stupid are we actually, since we still digest it?)

Please would anybody know how to migrate to the new Glo packages?I checked their website and there's just one word for it:appalling! Funny how they'll release packages without the means to activate them.Reminds me of MTN of old:preemptive announcements when services are not really ready for launch.Which of the "c"enforcers should I report to:NCC or EFCC?!

I guess it was a panic response from glo because MTN stunned them all when they least expected. That's what they call strategy.. The industry is now characterized by unified licenses flying around cheaply with intense competition from Fixed wireless operators, low switching cost of SIM cards and subscribers that don't mind having all four SIMS.
I'm still expecting a substantial drop in prices though..

Posted by Ifedisky
@Mamba:Glo must really be reeling for them to be stampeded like that. But it was a dose of their own medicine(lovely medicine from subscriber perspective!)they've been crashing prices at will! But this response! It makes them look stupid and unimaginative.Ha,glo,my glo.Why now?!
@all :Would anyone know where one can pick an original Nokia N93 at reasonable price.Saw it somewhere at 83k

Peace Tidings@01-7903175. Price: N81,800.

@amby: It funny that though GPRS takes up so much bandwdth, the gsm co's dont mind giving that up for free for months on end while they have only recently decided to budge on call prices.

@all: Is this MTN free call thing something you have to register or is it automatic?

Posted by coolapostle
@Abu I just got back from the Plateau and MTN is doing a lot of damage with their adverts. I think they are on 100 adverts per day! Talk about heavy-rotation. Glo response has been slow and weak.

To switch you have to send a text with 700-730 to 131... depending on the plan you want. I went for the XtraCool (for "students" says MTN) ... you get:
-N5 for SMS
-30% less for 3 Friends and Family MTN numbers
-calls are cheaper 43/33 kobo for peak/off-peak (I think)
-and 0.0 calls between 12:30am and 4:30am (IF YOU HAVE N100 LEFT IN YOUR ACCOUNT)

I am yet to try the wee-hours calls and even to activate the Friends and Family numbers.... but I think it isthe best deal of all the packages.

Posted by Angelgirl
Yes, Cool, i prefer Xtracool, u can also txt credits to ur friends on dis platform using 'Share and sell' write TRANSFER 0803xxxxxxx 50.00 and send to 777, wait 4 reply and instructn, minmum transfa is N50 and above.

@brym:Thanks,but it's a little pricey yet.
@all:MTNs extra cool is hip.Spend upwards of two hours daily digging up my old contacts. But they have challenges of congestion.sometimes one can't make a second call after the first but the deal remains cool.Plus one gets 10mms free!

Posted by pxthomas
What is glo waiting to release the activation codes of their packages?
@Abu...you want to join da mtn wagon? You are welcome to the world of freebies

@Angel...that's not true. I am on mtn gprs cos' i don't have any other gprs service in my area.

Posted by ambyzown
@pxthomas: you're probably one in 50, or two if you add Abu. I must hand it to mtn this time, they caught the other operators napping. this is what is expected from market leaders. Xtra cool is more attractive than Xtra connect

Good one!

Posted by pxthomas
@amby...you guys in lag are really enjoying telephone services. Well, celtel will surely respond to MTN & glo, even if glo is a little bit confused now. In fact they have no choice else they will have only mast in naija. Surely they can't survive by offering free gprs only

Posted by Ifedisky
@amby:MTNcaught other operators napping but their network is snoozing! The strain on the network at night is unbelievable. The congestion in Surulere is better imagined than felt. Glo and co should be picking their steps.Xmas should be anticipated anyhow.Reckon it'll be lovely!

@amby:getting a connection is easier b/f 1am.Beyond that you'l av to,like, queue.See the time?I've been on since 12.30!Think this thing's like opium addiction(not that I've had opium O!)you can't really fight it.Only time will get it off one's system. Can't believe when I hid my number and flashed most MTN entries on my phone,70% were online!See what I mean?Nigerians are talking;for the very first time.Goodnight all!

i guess life is now really beautiful for u night crawless now. this goes to show that nigerians surely love to talk. i predict that the new tariff structure wont last for too long sha. MTN is just using the strategy to shake off competition & consolidate leadership cos there is now a battle for market share. remember Vmobile was not reactive to glo's threat when they were surpassed. now i think glo is threatening & MTN has reacted professionally.

It was alarm bells at MTN when Glo totted the 9th million subscriber when they themselves were just a wee bit more than that figure. What a response they're offering. All the radio stations and tvs have something on MTN.Even saw a full, front page advert on Thisday newspapers from them.Glad the feathers of this South Africans were ruffled. They were becoming too smug

Posted by abubakar
@coola: thanks!!! I wont deny that MTN has been much more cunning in its advertizing. That Celtel advert is so boring I can honestly say i have never watched it from beginning to end. Nothing captures the eye or ear in the advert. to make it worse, as a friend of mine brought to my notice, the accents in the advert seem to all be east african!!!! Did they just bring the adverts from there thinking we are all the same?

@pxth: thinking about getting the sim for any emergency I feel with the shake up that Glo's boss got weeks back has put the company into jeopardy. Thts the problem with mega-companies that have one person with too much control over it. With him dodging EFCC and police no one seems to be making moves for a quick comeback.

@amby: My mtel gprs hasnt been working!!! I got to use it during my 2 weeks in Abuja but back home im totally relying on wifi. Starcomms might be up and running by Dec then i'll be on 24/7.

@Ifed: Doesnt it make you wonder that up till now MTN (and most likely all the other GSM cos) dont have the capacity to really take on Naija's telephony needs? Lets say 500,000 people are making or receiving calls @ 12:30am to 4, why cant thier equipement take that capacity? That is why we are still paying thru the nose to make calls. Like i've said before, until 20 mins of calls per day (not incl the vampire hours) becomes affordable for most of nigerians, these guys will be having us over a barrel.
