@pxth: I really wanted to just get a Z520i but i cant get find one. No k600 in the market either.
@coola: not meaning to sound cold (but it is cold sha) but with all the things we've suffered in the hands of the military in the past, it seems the people generally are a bit insensitive to the plight.

My wife is now wandering if i have gone crazy, cos i have been laughing since i read coola's post. Do you guys remember this 80's music: NO ROMANCE WITHOUT FINANCE by Gwen gutherie. You got to have something if you wanna have them. They only think in terms of money only
Oh boy they are really beautiful. I know them. My A Level was at Aba and first degree at UNN. Most of them are not faithful, but the good ones are good anyway.

Can anyone make sense of the new MTN XTRA tariffs?
I am looking for testers for the XTRACOOL package (free late night calls). I want to see if it is any good compared to the rest.
Who wants in? PM ur MTN number and stay awake.

I switched to the package yesterday and it's cool as they said. Now things are surely getting better. I'm waiting for glo and Vmo... sorry, Celtel's reply.

Mtn is now billing me properly

@pxth: sorry, but you were MTN victim!!!!!! By the way, can you elaborate your indepth knowledge in Aba girls? hehehehe
@mamba: Its really a wonder when all these GSM cos claim they have blah blah million subscribers when in reality we all have 2-3 sims!!!! If we were all forced to use just one line which one would it be???? AHA!! Another poll!!!
@all: Which GSM company would you use if forced to use only one??
for me its Glo. (used to be econet/vodacom/vmobile/celtel/?????)

like i said before it is no ROMANCE WITHOUT FINANCE
On the issue of which sim to use if forced to use only one, it would be mtn.
Posted by mamba
I'll go for Vmobile if i were to choose. That company had a good organizational culture & excellent customer service. i noticed the few changes made by celtel over the past week & i'm so convinced that we have finally witnessed the burial of one of the best companies in Nigeria. Celtel started by increasing prices by adopting a flat tariff of 77k across all networks. they want to start by exploiting Nigerians. they even insisted that i have to move from Vstep which was much cheaper to the 77k plan. i'm sorry for them cos they've just lost a customer. i'm dumping them for MTN extra.
Posted by OluYom
My choice would be GloMobile post-paid. They still have the most-innovative, most diverse package of value-added-services of all the networks. Plus, I enjoy low tariffs on everything: voice, fax, SMS, network services (including mobile banking and transactions) and GPRS.
I wouldn't think twice about it.

Scores:
MTN: 3
Celtel: 0
Glo: 2
Mtel: -2 (cos its doesnt seem to even be considered right now.)
The only real advantage (for me ie) I see MTN has is its coverage on major national highways. But since i dont live on the highway, that doesnt help too much. Glo really started the competition (as we have gisted on past threads) and they have been a bit more innovative.
@pxth: You said more than "no romance with no finance" (by the way, since you posted it i cant get the song out of my head, and i never really liked the song at that!!!) you also said

Hey guys if i were to choose one subscriber i'll go for a celtel although they really don't know who can manage for them almost 3 companies have one thing or another in there. Unlike Mtn really stable, but still go for a celtel.

@pxth: Very Frank!!!! Dont mind her. Usually in cases as such, you'll end up hearing about her being some man's 2nd wife or something!!!! I know of one back in the days that had soooooo many suitors, a bunch of up and comers, in fact. She rebuffed all, fishing for a "ready-made" husband. That was in the mid 90's. She's single and not so...."handsome"...... as she used to be. That's one advantage of being a man. We mature, women age. (At least, most women do!!!!)

@Mamba.... my thots exactly...
I cannot wait for the Glo response... meanwhile... my MTN line is now enjoying A LOT of attention... the text for Xtracool is actually 5 bucks! The low call tariffs is also great -I can spend more time before the "MTN lady" says, "ONE MINUTE REMAINING!"
The MTN move was totally unexpected and out-of-character. The Coolapostle is impressed.
Who was it here that ate his MTN SIM card a few months ago?
@all Celtel GPRS has finally returned to my home area after several months... but the wap settings don't work. They must have reached Abuja at last... please check your Celtel SIM card for your area.

That will be me, but not to worry, I've already acquired a welcome back SIM and registered for MTN Xtracool today.
I am reluctant to write off Celtel just yet, but I'd be stupid to let such awoof from MTN go without tasting it.
If I had to choose one network today, I'd still stick to Celtel, because they've served me well in the past and I don't expect them to do otherwise now. (The MTN awoof notwithstanding)

@ALL...what is the reason for this MTN awoof?Albeit, i don't see myself waking up by 2 a.m just to make calls so i chose xtra pro.

@pxth:you forgot the price tag!!!! N91k!!!
@coola: I suspect MTN is bracing for the competition from fixed wireless cos. With this unified license out and NCC pressuring them to be in 3 states in each geo-political zone in b4 the year runs out (however impossible as it may seem!!) MTN (and the other GSM cos) have to give offers close to, matching or better than the offers Fixed Wireless cos are currently offering. We’ll see when and what the rest do.

I was expecting a response from her from my aging women wise crack.
@amby: If celtel wants to survive till 2007 they have to come out with something mind blowing. But im still waiting for you guys to start lamenting on some hidden charge that MTN has put in their coolxtra abi xtracool package. This is MTN we are talking about. If they don’t do something evil, they would be out of character. I remain skeptical for at least a month. If by then you guys are still praising MTN I’ll buy a sim for when Im traveling!!!! (at least that will be my initial excuse!)

Abu with this attitude, you'll soon become the only
lover alive. I have read the esato thread that compares the N95 with the P990, and so many
fans are praising the innovative thinking that resulted in that phone. We
enthusiasts need to accept the fact that the engineers at
have to sit up if they are to retain our loyalty.
The N95 is really a loaded phone, and a lot of rave reviews are already proclaiming it the phone of the year 2007.
At 550 Euro, its not too expensive. The P990 debuted at 600 euro

By the way guys, Celtel MMS is working again, and this time I think they finally got their act right.
What do you guys say to the hike in cross network tariffs of N14 per min for land lines (PTOs). I think I may have to jettison my intercellular line for a contract package on Glo, Celtel or MTN, and save myself the hassles of carrying several handsets.
@Aya: as a proponent of CDMA land-lines, don't you think this development will work against rather than for the PTOs?
Posted by coolapostle

I think the PTO's have to push their internet access and free weekend rates if they want to stay competitive.
The underlying issue is the new interconnection rates that the NCC has directed on all the operators. Now... getting a line from Reltel, Cellcom, Intercellular and Co has losts its appeal. I pity them.
If they push internet access and free weekend calls they will stand a chance. I am anxious to see how the new rates will affect Starcomms growth. They have crossed 400,000 subs... impressive.
Posted by abubakar
@pxth: I heard the price being about $700 which should be about E550 which should be about N91k. Lets hope during final roll out there isnt any extra hike to the price.
@amby: i didnt say it was too expensive!! the P990 should be going for about N114k right now! But you should also look at the fact that touch screen tech is still a bit expensive. (hence the price of M600). I cant cough at the N95's expected features. But I still maintain that Nokia makes good higher end phones (for the bourgois who can afford 100k phones) but SE makes the best phones for the masses (which constitutes majority of the phones moved). SE hasnt really put out any new stallions from its stable sinc the W*** revolution started. Lets see what thier next break through will be. If it doesnt come up with anything by 1st qtr then its future will be grim as by then nokia's higher end phone prices will start migrating down to smother the market. (which is a good thing to Nokialovers.!!)
I knew NCC had something up its sleeve when they were backing the PTOs during the fight over the Unified Licence. But this is just too bad! You would think Interconnection rates should be coming down, with the companies streamlining operation costs as well as they can. Why should I pay more for my local calls to other PTOs because GSM cos have higher op costs? (mainly costs of operating on highways and unvaiable areas). If care is not taken and the PTOs dont do something drastic, this might be thier down fall. Like Coola said, Internet and free calls may be the only salvation. And they have to guard it well cos if say celtel go crazy and start giving similar packages like monthly data access at similar rates, i think that will be the end of CDMA in Naija.
@coola: Starcomms crossed 500,000 active subscribers months ago, but really with this developement, the growth will reallt be impeded.

Again, I am NOT a proponent of CDMA or GSM, nokia or SE, or any other whatever.
We had a discussion and based on the issues at hand I took a stand. That does not make me a CDMA proponent.
The issues involved in this scenario differ from those involved in the discussion we had earlier. While that was based on the capabilities of the two different platforms, this has to do with a regulatory issue. Yes; this puts the CDMA networks in a weaker position. Unfortunately, that is what you get with government policies in this part of the world.
The PTOs still have their place. N14/min to other PTOs is still better than current GSM tariffs. That means I will still use my Starcomms line regularly, especially when calling others with CDMA lines. Its still more than significant savings.
In my opinion the new interconnect rates are retrogressive and will hinder progress. But since when did my opinion begin to count anywhere?
Posted by pxthomas
@aya...please explain your last paragraph
@all... Any news about nokia N83?
Posted by coolapostle

The NCC says the downward reduction of GSM rates affects the majority of subs in 9ja. Since most calls are GSM-to-GSM, we are supposed to enjoy the lower rates.
Again, it is the new rates that is making the CDMA guys to increase it tariffs... not greed.

One clear thumbs-down for Celtel is the notorious issue of not being able to speak with a customer care representative for days on end. You keep trying and you keep being told by the automated system to visit the Celtel website, which isn't saying much.
