yes angel celtel's wap homepage is content rich, but also requires a "content rich" airtime account to download content.

Hey p.ple,
I think we are really doomed in this kaduna oh. My neighbor who works in mtel says that in the whole of mtel kaduna only one guy has the gprs settings and that it has stopped working in kaduna(although i dont know if she's just trying to talk me out of getting the settings from her- but i will not relent. When next i see her i'l tel her i still want the settings.) she said it's just one guy in the mtel switch who creates or configures(not sure) the setting. so i think am close to getting the settings-i'll keep you guys posted.
Celtel is really planning towards bringing gprs to all states. They say it's in batches-I just pray kaduna is among the first batch(at least we are well known in the north) and i guess that is why i keep receriving gprs settings on my phone even without requesting.
Bye p.ple

Posted by abubakar
@easyd: As i have said once, i will say it again, IT IS NOT THE SETTINGS THAT WILL GET YOU THROUGH!!!!! Your number has to be registered in thier switch for the settings to work. Someone at the switch must hook you up. There are virtually no settings!!!

@easy: Awoof dey run belle o!
You still have MTN and Glo to pull you out of emergency situations right?

@Abu: I doubt that CSD on Celtel is still active anywhere, its not restricted to a particular location.

Add these to my problem of getting even WAP to work on my Moto....

I think we all have been spoilt by the really exceptional connectivity qualities of SE phones... other phones just don't do it in the same way!

@Mamba: I have never used my S55 for bluetooth modem/pc connection, I used the serial cable(The only downside of this method is the inability to charge your phone while browsing.) and the networking wizard on the enclosed cd for my setup because both my computers do not have bluetooth.
Have you installed the bluetooth modem driver properly?
Have you tried the IrDa?

Maybe Aya can help.

I have tried the serial cable and it still doesn't work, still getting the ppp control link error. I'm tired of this s55 wahala jare. I wish i had gotten a t68i or t610 instead. BTW, operamini doesn't work. SE is surely the best.

a friend told me she had been browsing free on her MTN line since yesterday. i hope these networks will get to realize that gprs should be treated as a commodity service cos Nigerians are definitely not willing to pay 70kobo for it. @angel, any handsfree that can enter the port will surely work, it now depends on the quality of sound.

@easy: Thanks 4 d info. I tried ma MTN line & d gprs is also free(...might b an offer of some sort.)@all: I went 2 a cybercafe 2 browse & d charges were twice d normal price. They said it was EFCC's decision. Is dat EFCC's way 2 tackle cyber-crime?

Give me a buzz whenever you're online, and I'll talk you thru resolving this conflict via messenger.
Opera mini (Version 1.2) works on the S55, but its limited memory hinders its running.

The headset Angel seeks has an FM radio integrated into it. The phone itself does not have a radio

I have just connected via PC using MTN gprs and opened yahoo home page, I've checked by balance and its still intact. Could this be a free gprs spree?

Econet Wireless -> Vodacom -> Vmobile -> Celtel Nigeria

And we await what MTel will morph into when Transcorp gets their hands on them.

@All... What was the speed of the MTN connections? I want to know if it is worth the wahala of looking for my SIM card.

@Alph Check your link

@All I need reccomendations on a good anti-virus. My AVG has been unable to clear one nasty virus called I-Worm/VB.FZ for the past 3 days. I need any free anti-virus that I can download from the net. Its urgent.

Posted by mamba
@coola, since you know the location of the virus, just delete it and clear it from your recycle bin. you could still quarantine it with avg or delete.

Posted by ambyzown
@coola: alternatively, you could download Avast4 home edition, its a very good AVG and its free.

heard from a source from celtel that they are already test running a service called visto which is similar to blackberry being offered by glo. Don't have much info on this, but I'll keep us informed

Posted by abubakar
@easyd: lets hope they dont remove your cred a few days later or on your next reload!!! MTN are like that!!!!

@namzo: watch out which cafes you go to!!! these efcc people dont care!!! they just pack everyone in the cafe and you'll then be looking for bail money!!!

@coola: i used to be on either Norton or Mcaffe but since i got Kaspersky AV i have been estatic!!! It doesnt interfer with my Download accelerators at all, un like the rest.

@all: all this 3g gist, have any of them given an actual roll out date? I know the costs will be held close to there chests tillthe last second. But unless we start to charge the average international cost if 1G services (we pay more than 3 times that for our SMSs) we will never get a good deal unless when they give the services free for months on end!!!

Posted by mamba
glo claims to be 3g ready but will probably be waiting for licence from NCC. gprs/3g services dont deserve to be priced at 70k because i cant imagine the data cost of video streaming at that price. i believe it's going to be cheap sha. i suspect that celtel would be the ones to crash data prices.

Hey guys wats up.As anyone noticed the change in speed in the new celtel gprs lately so slow maybe its where am i at ibadan its picking up slowly also does anyone know if a sendo x can affect it cos d phone has alot of problems.

@laykay: the slow speed of celtel gprs is not limited to ur location. remember that the more users that are online the slower the speed. but its better this morning. yes ur phone can affect the apparent speed of ur browsing. the processor is the key here.

@egunje: my bet is that Atiku will see out his term, then he'll arrested and prosecuted. Obj and Ribadu will see to that.

@mamba: all these GSM co.s like to play with language loosely!!! What does it mean to be 3G ready? The equipement is in a warehouse? It has been set up at the Switches but not the cell sites? Its been set up at the cell sites but it hasnt been test run? Beleive me, if they have done a test run, someone here would have known (it is usually the period that we get it free for a while).

@egunj: AT last, something to argue about!!!!! It is impossible to expect complete justice in Naija as for now. But it still bugs me that OBJ can try to smudge a former bed-fellows like ATK. I never looked at ATK as a sharp guy, but he must have some evidence of him and OBJ wacking something jointly. If its is out there, OBJ wont be able to do anything serious and this may be an elaborate smoke screen for something bigger. All in all, i doubt that they will get him out till his term ends.

@Amby: dont you think OBJ has skeletons in his closet that ATK can use against him?

@namzo: I checked out the ngbot but was dissapointed but not surprised at the lopsidedness of the directory.

@laykay: gprs speeds are regulated by voice calls in your area. thats why most likely if you try browsing at 3am you'll get optimum speeds.

@All: by the way, my MTEL has been down for about 3 months now so no one should be salivating at it!!!!

Thats the only reason why he's survived thus far. As soon as he's no longer VP, he can be arrested, his house and other locations searched, and any incriminating evidence against OBJ "confiscated"

both Glo and celtel's statements are unambigous: 3G has been set up in 3 cities across the country. tests have been done and are still ongoing. clear enough.

As for no-one here getting on the 3G freebie train, here are a few factors:
1. you certainly need a 3G phone
2. you may need a different SIM
3. you certainly need activation, because its a different network/spectrum from 2G/2.5G
4. you may not be within coverage: 3G coverage is usually limited to localities where it is expected to generate revenue. Other areas are usually left hanging on EDGE or GPRS

1. With the calibre (ehem!!!) of some of our esteemed members, one of us must have or will be willing to get a 3G phone (even if its a tokumbo!!!)I've seen an SE 3G being sold for N30k (tho i ws wary whether it was stolen or not)

2. I dont think the sim is different. Unless they are leaving the GSM format. I'll have to read up on that to confirm

3. The frequency spectrum should not be a problem since its the same frequency ranges our guys will most likely use (900 & 1800) unless they decide to pick up 400, 850 & 1900.

4. Majority of our PNFers are Lagosian (abi Lasgidians). Where else can the place the 3G 1st?

@abu: I have a 3G phone, Nokia E61. One or two others may too. Depending on the SIM you have, you may need another. The spectrum is certainly different. That's part of the reason why they need a license in order to run the thing, and that's part of why you would need a 3G phone. About being in Lagos, that is no guarantee. Coverage is likely to be selective too, like Starcomms' EV-DO, which has been deployed in selected locations in Lagos. At least for now. By the way, with respect to ngbot.com, you could help namzo better by highlighting what he needs to do to improve the site, instead of simply saying you were disappointed. That way your critism would be helpful to him.

@All Thanks for the AV tips. My MTEL has joined sides with the virus and refused to work these past two days.

ABOUT THIS BLACKBERRY WAHALA
-It is elitist
-It requires special email servers for the corporation
-I don't see what is the big deal
(Glo is claiming it is FIRST to bring Blackberry... so what? MTN was first to bring Sendo S200 and they don't make noise about it)
-I didn't see any special Glo branding on the device
-It is sad the amount of newspaper adverts that is devoted to it... a waste IMHO... they should target Corporate Naija and leave u alone.

And now Celtel wants to join in? Puleeese...

ON 3G READINESS
What I read was demos by their manufacturers. Alcatle did a 3G demo for Glo. It means nothing. GPRS is not making them any money and they are all jumping to 3G... I think it is just for bragging rights not really for the money.

COMMENTS NEEDED ON...
Glo has caught up with MTN.... both are at 9 million subs.
MTN is 9.6m
Glo is "over 9m"

Hey guys about the 3g network thing i think its great and goin 2help alot of nigerians but the problem will be switching to 3g phones and guess they're expensive but i trust 9ja they will get it 4cheap also about the ngbot.com he's really gonna get paid thru google adsense that d lastest web payment machine ask d nairaland guy really a rich man now. I guess i too need 2 switch to it soon.

@AYA: 3G uses the frequencies i mentioned before including the frequencies 2.5 are currently using. I dont know if NCC specifically has made the service to lay on the outer ranges (400, 850 and 1900).

@coola: A blackberry is like porsche!!! Its for the rich!!!!

@laykay: switching to 3G will be like switching to colour screens or switching to camera phone. Eventually a few cheap(er) versions will start floating around then it will be the norm. as always my problem is more whether the services will be affordable any time soon

@abu: I may have missed that post. What frequencies did you mention? 3G networks, as I've said many times on this thread, are not upgrades of 2/2.5G networks. 3G networks require and operate on a different and higher frequency spectrum. As such a new licence for that spectrum must be issued before ANY GSM network can deploy 3G. Here's a Wiki reference: http://pda.en.wapedia.org/3G. You can also do a Google, or search the UMTS/3G forums on Esato.

Its different for the CDMA networks. EVDO, for example, does not require a different spectrum or licence, and that's why Starcomms can deploy without restrictions.

I know that a debate similar to this has been run earlier in this thread. I am still wondering what the debate was really about.

Posted by OluYom
@abu: WCDMA/3G runs on 2100MHz. A 3G phone cannot run on both GSM and 3G networks/frequencies at the same time. If it moves out of 3G coverage, it actually has to switch from the WCDMA Radio Access Network to the GSM (GPRS/EDGE) Radio Access Network. Again, that's because 3G is a different network, so to speak.

@laykay: I have been looking at the cost factor too. But generally, 3G is usually priced same as GPRS. However here in Naija, GPRS costs certainly need to drop further.

As for handsets, you can pick up brand new 3G phones in the market from 30k. I got my E61 for N40k. For a smartphone of its calibre, that's a deal.

@AYA, pls help me with this s55 gprs wahala abeg. I'm missing out on the gprs fun because of this stupid device that has refuced to connect. My laptop doesnt have infrared or serial so i'm stuck with bluetooth and i've tried everything on earth without success.

As per 3G, you can get a Nec E616 or some motorola ones for about 15k, even sonyericsson V600 costs 18k, very good 3G phone I must say.

You will most definitely need to switch your current SIM for a 3G one to use the service. 3G is a different level from edge or basic gprs.
