The only phone i'm considering amongst the moto brands is the Rokr E2. I'll probably choose between Rokr E2 or Nokia 5500. Any views about the 2 phones would be appreciated.

Can the S55 or t68i be used as bluetooth GPRS modem?

Both of 'em can be used as modems via BlueTooth, Infrared or cable.

@brix: Nice to know I was missed! I'll be over at the SA thread in a jiffy.

@All: I have reliable information that Glo will launch its 3G service shortly. The service is currently being test run and most glomobile staff with 3G handsets are already making video calls. Another first for Glo.
Reactions please!!

Is there not going to be licence fees for 3G in Nigeria?
I'm aware that Vmobile is also testing 3G on their network in Lagos, Port Harhourt and Abuja.

Vmobile trials 3G in Nigeria

Vmobile beat them to it (at least the public announcement!). i'll just set my E61 to dual mode i.e. GSM/UMTS and see if I can pick up a 3G signal

Posted by abubakar
PNF has gone back to its roots and the GSM dialogue is on!!!!!!!!
Was wondering when we would stop chatting about 3rd term, world cup, feul scarcity!!!!!

@AYA (aka the unknown soldier): nice to see you around. on checking coola's link T610 beat your S55 hands down in all categories (accept thickness)!!!!! the colour range kills the S55. And comparing it with the T68i, the T68i uses WAP 2.0 unlike the S55's Wap1.2.1!!!!!it doesnt seem to have CSD either!!!

Try again to look for another phone but SE is still the one to beat!!!!!

@coola: cant remember the last time i looked at a paper!! always chek them online. I used to be good at word games. I'll check it up!!!

I think the networks are getting ahead of themselves... the NCC is yet to decide on who gets a 3G license. But it will be really cool to join in their "tests" too... unfortunately... my connections in V is the weakest. If na Glo or MTN... I could pull some strings....

Another problem: who will u test it with?????

@abubakar: contrary to the details posted there, the s55's browser is both 1.2.1 and 2.0. You can do a search on the net for that. As for comparing it with the t610, find out what the t610 costs - they aren't in the same league.

saw news of Glo's 3G network in The Punch. I am primarilly concerned with cost when thinking 3G. GPRS is expensive enough as it is.

Had gprs black out for the last 3 days.
What is the cost of this 3g going to be like?

Posted by pxthomas
I have had (me & madam) this nokia n71 for about 3 weeks & i'm not impressed. The high price of this device means that it is supposed to offer premium quality. The device is slow, screen produces scratch after 2 or 3 days.low internal memory (10mb) though 128mb mini sd card is included. The os is S60 3rd edition so older applications do not work. Albeit, installed symbian does not work after a day(it has to be re-installed).
Nevertheless, the device has some excellent features- The nokia web browser is exquisite but when you think of data cost you will go back to opera mini. The media player has support for eAAC and mp4. Device has a document viewer. Large screen. Has 3g and EDGE.
In conclusion, i would prefer a SE of equivalent price.

NB: I CALLED IT A DEVICE

@pxthomas: And I liked the look of the N71 when it was announced but in all honesty it's a crap phone...too big, too slow and not enough bang for your buck. That's one of the reasons this phone is not being released in South Africa.

Vmobile- 3G like that wil eva happen. They still dnt hav full gprs coverage in the country-actions speak louder than words (all vmobile knws how to do is sweettalk- they'll probably b d last 2 launch d 3G. Lyk d gprs which they r stil testing-IMAGINE THAT!) As for glo(i knw they'l deliver) n i knw mtn is probably cookin up sumtin(they're up 2d task) Pls any1 knw how i can do welcome back on mtel?

@easydee. . .my brother i have not tasted vmobile gprs. now they are talking of 3g. They should not deceive us.
The best thing for vmobile is to be acquired by a big multinational that will inject life into the company. They are just struggling. I hope they make it

@AYA: the T68i goes for 5k, the s55 goes for 9k, the T610i is 11k. Which set are we to say should be pitted against the other?

I agree that the 3G is gonna be expensive. If the 2.5G services ar this costly, wht else is there to expect? At least with the arrival of 3G in Lag, Abj and mostlikely PH, there will be more 2.5 for us that are managing 2.0!!! If they give 3G sevices for free for 6months im sure a few of us will close eye and dole out 10k a month to continue!!!! Nigerians and our status symbols!!!!!!

@pxth: sorry, but your another Nokia victim!!!! Nokia has an excellent marketing team that pushes its phones.

@all: I think d ntwks(...vmobile in particular) should focus more on network coverage b4 considering upgrade to 3G, bcos they're still test runnin their gprs which has nothin much to offer yet ..but i believe one day we'll get there. What's up wit d Vmobile & Celtel thing?

Posted by Dejitella
vmobile has just changed its settings to celtel, i mean its Gprs settings, i guess thats all they wanna fix not 3G that you guys are talkin about, vmobile is still the best, take it or leave it, slow and steady wins the race, MTN just cut down her projected subscriber base! Why? Cos they re rushing no where, and their network capacity is suffering. Well i guess the celtel settings correctly this moment and i just posted with it.

@easydee, @pxt, @namzo: I fail to understand your dissatisfaction with Vmobile/celtel gprs service, I for one have enjoyed its availability for over 8months, and not paid a dime for it. Only today, they completed maintenance work on their gprs networks, and have given out new apn's. Right now, I'm getting like 14kb/s constant download speed for FREE, can you beat that? Yes, the service does not cover the country, but they aren't earning a penny for it yet, so why spend money on infrastructure that isnt paying?
To cap it all they've surprised me by upgrading to 3G. If you aren't pleased with what you are getting on Vmobile/Celtel, switch to MTN or Glo its as simple as that.

@Aya: E61? where is 9500? Make you no chop alone o, I know you when you never make money o

ambyzone, you re always on the right sides of issues, how could they castigate something free. I love your response to their unwarranted tongue lash.

Ok.... here it is my new phone: Moto C261.

I bought it for N9,500 (thats like 70 USD or 38 pounds)
Specs here:

I will upload a pix

Posted by ambyzown
@Coola: I tot you said you wanted a phone with That moto does not have I doubt if it even sports IR, not to talk of a B.I Modem.
You'd have been better off with the Siemens S55 Aya recommended plus you'd have had some change to buy airtime recharge cards.

@Abu: what about the theme creator stuff you spoke about? do you think you could cook up something for the W800/K750/W700? I have some pics I'd love to use.

The 9500's hinges gave way and my wife decided she would repair them AND KEEP the phone! So I got myself an E61.

My wife is yet to be sent the new vmobile/celtel settings. Anyone who has them care to post them here?

Posted by OluYom
The new vmobile/celtel settings just arrived. Giving them a spin.... Pretty sluggish here at the moment. But at least it works

@coola: what inspired you to pick up the c257? No IR, no BT, no mail client... In comparison with the t68i, s55 and T610 it just doesn't cut it (especially when looking at what you mentioned as your needs).

@abu: Point taken about price comparison between the 3

Hi people,

Sorry I been quiet. You all know how it is.
@ Aya: Please check the celtel settings well oh!:) I will give you a call when I am in town. We can meet at the usual place...Maybe...

Posted by coolapostle
Well, I had to get the Moto because:
-The Siemens S55 was not available
-I saw a Siemens A60 and I priced it for 4k (which to me is fair for such an oldie)
-Only SE J series phones fit my specs and I nearly bought one out of frustration.
-ONLY SE phones had IR for less than 10k
-Most of the other sub-10k phones from othe manufacturers didn't have IR or BT. Once a phone had BT, the price jumped to like 13-15k
-The Moto has a really cool exterior and yes, no IR, BT, Modem
-The battery is wack too.... I am just finding out
-It has a serial-usb cable to send pictures/SMS/Contacts to a PC... that is what clinched the dealfor me.

Here is the pix:

Posted by brix25
Oh no coola, how could you buy that garbage phone...I mean, you would've gotten an second-hand set with the better feature specs at the same price. If I'm looking for a second phone there's no way it's going to be without BT.

Posted by abubakar
@AYA: it takes a big man to give corrections and it takes a bigger man to accept them.

@coola: We go soon pursue to away from this thread o! Why, o why did you buy that phone? Did you buy it for functionality or Fashion? You still haven’t confirmed if you got the theme I sent.

@egunj: this abandonment is punishable!!! With all the companies giving free (???) gprs/csd in lag none of our lag PNFers should be MIA.

@Amby: the theme creator works with all 3. send the pixs to abu@awoof.com or sam_abubakar@hotmail.com. Soon i'll offer this service only to seti@homePNFers!!!!!

Hehehehe.... the problem is that there are really no exceptional phones outside SE!!!!!!!

But everyone has been saying "Wow!" at the phone and price all day here in mr office. It looks waaaaaaay better that the cheapie Nokias of the price range.

My SE T610 can still be doing modem duty while I answer calls with this new baby. I am happy with it... I think

... if only I can get the gprs to work.... it has something like Primary and Secondary IP... what does that mean????????

@all: I got myself an auxillary phone today as well: a Siemens ME45. Shock and water-proof; GPRS; WAP 1.2.1; infra-red modem; speakerphone and then some more. Fairly-used. Cost N4,000.00

@angelgirl: The only modification to the old Vmobile settings is the APN.

For WAP, change APN to "wap".

For full internet, change APN to "internet".

Everything else stays the same.

Posted by ambyzown
@Aya: Good bargain

If anyone is interested in a used auxilliary phone, I have an S55 for sale. Included with the phone is an attachable camera, original siemens charger, serial data cable and communications Cd. The phone looks a bit scratched, but still works well. Only N7000

Even in Abuja... Celtel's gprs coverage is patchy.... I used to get it in my office.. but it ceases about 2 months ago. I can't get it in my home.

An Mtel Engr told me they implement GPRS from the BSC (Base Station Controllers) which should make many Base Stations live... I don't know how Celtel is doing theirs.

I suspect Amby is a share-holder in the company that is why he has been having it this good all this time.

The E61 beats the 9500 in speed, power, display (16 million colours!) and network connectivity (3G alongside GPRS, EDGE and Wi-fi). Browsing, and indeed doing anything on the E61, is MUCH faster than on the 9500.

However, very few keyboards can beat the 9500's, so the E61 loses there. The E61 has 2 browsers, a basic XHTML and an advanced web/javascript/bla-bla web powerhorse that does much faster everything I did on the 9500 browser and more. I do prefer it to Opera, but mini comes in handy for conserving funds.

The browser fails in the areas of text editing and image-copying. There does not seem to be a way to highlight text on a webpage or to save images too. Bad. Very bad. Other than that, the browser takes anything else you can throw at it: online banking; domain management; webhost management; javascript pages, jsp files etc.

The E61 mail client is certainly less versatile than the 9500's, but it has the added advantage of audio and visual alerts when new mails come in, something I missed on the 9500. The E61 also supports a wide variety of PUSH email services like the Blackberry service, Seven Always-on, and MS Exchange Server.

The E61 is much more pocketable. Video playback is heaven! Audio and video podcasting is something else as well.

Office-wise, its got Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Add BT, IrDA, USB and its complete.

Seeing I have not used any WM device, its better I do not make any pronouncements on how they stand beside the E61.

Posted by ambyzown
Haba easydee, Mtel ke? Abu has been on this Mtel case for three months and coola just managed to get connected. These are the only two people in Nigeria who I know use Mtel gprs and you are asking for settings? You need "serious connection" to be able to use mtel gprs.
