Here is a link to the story in the Guardian:
http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/media/article02

Some excerpts:
"No licensee shall acquire rights for broadcasting for the territory of Nigeria together with any other territory which presupposes the exclusion of any other Nigerian operator from having opportunity to acquire same."

The release went further to state that "where existing contractual agreements obtain, upon their lapse, subsequent rights acquisition agreement must designate Nigeria as a stand-alone territory."

The commission however clarified that "where such rights exist, the holder shall not be allowed to exploit them except other licensees are given the opportunity to exploit or access them."

This one was from a blog:
http://naijablog.blogspot.com[....]ormation-flows-in-nigeria.html

As one commentator has pointed out, DSTV/Multichoice have only themselves to blame for the decision - access to the footie is one of the major reasons why people who can afford it fork out N9000 per month at present (around 35 UK pounds).

Finally: ThisDay
http://allafrica.com/stories/200608071124.html

"You will not believe it that indigenous Direct-to-Home satellite companies that were in operation have all gone under incurring huge loses as a result of their inability to get good content that will attract customers. Contents and channels that could have helped them remain in business have been exclusively bought or warehoused by a South African company on behalf of Nigeria. This is ridiculous.

@coola: From my understanding what will now happen is that Nigeria will be a seperate entity when it comes to rights...the snag though is that this new regulation will simply mean that DStv will beat all their competition in Nigeria when it comes time for a new deal. Besides, Nigerians do not own rights to the EPL...the English own these rights and they won't sell them for anything less then the premium price.

Never under-estimate a Government that is hell-bent on cutting you to size.... they may get the licence but when it comes to beaming it into Naija... the rules have changed.

The GSM analogy does not stick. Except, say, MTN has "rights" for all International calls AND ALL of us have to go thru them for any international call.... then they refuse to re-sell to others AND the prices remain high for ever.

The analogy sticks regarding the fact that your tiny FStv and the likes dont have the money to set themselves up, which was my point!!! The nigerian operator have the chance to bid for rights but they cant cope. The only reason NBC (and whoever else!!!) can even try to open their mouths and say that only local champs can broadcast is becos we dont broadcast anything worth anyone trying to get rights for!!!! Anyhow, who is to say Multichoice isnt a Nigerian company (it must have registered with NCC and has a few nigerian investors!!!). We can always go extreme and say NO DSTV BROADCASTS IN NAIJA...... but who will suffer? ALL YOU FOOTBALL FREAKS!!!! cos i bet even without DSTV bidding, I bet the companies we have on ground wont be able to afford the minimum bids and get enough advertiser to foot the bill. Remember, we have an almost non-existent commercial market!!!!!!

So... because we don't have the money then we have to put up with "rubbish"?

I say the ban is a step in the direction: affordable TV for all.

What is YOUR solution?

I don't care about the cost. Just don't wake me up at this period unless it is a medical emergency

@coola... calling someone by 2 a.m and posting are two different things.
If you are not careful you will become an insomniac before the end of the promo. Remember rest is a weapon.
secondly, awoof dey run belle. Free messaging to any network at any time is better

Well, my usual bedtime is around 2am daily (don't ask me when I wake up). Talking with someone between 12 and 12:30am is ok by me... as long as the person is a "night-browser" like me.

The attraction of talking to someone for 20 long minutes for 40 bucks...boy...

Posted by pxthomas
@coola... The attraction is cool. Anyway is the Glo stuff real?

Posted by mamba
It's true guys, 10kobo per second from 12am to 5am till Sept 30th. These guys are actually trying to utilize their unused capacity somehow. I'll try the glo offer tonight, of course i'll have to select those i can call at that time of the day before people start swearing & cursing at me for disturbing their sleep.

Posted by uchrik
Is this offer for calls from Glo to Glo or is it to any network?

Posted by mamba
glo to glo only. MTN's is also within network.

@Coola: Your informant is wrong. Its N4.50/min

@Abu: You greatly underestimate the Nigerian businessman. For your information, Dovemedia (Owners of TITV) have invested more money and infrastructure here than Multichoice Nigeria will ever hope to do. And I believe they can pay broadcast rights fees, IF they are allowed to.
This new law from the NBC will serve to curb the expoitative nature of MCN.
When you say DSTv has paid a lot for programming what does that mean?
CNN, BBC, Sky, Discovery, SABC, ESPN, Cartoon network, Bloomberg, and so many of the channels in their bouquet of programming are actually free to air, which DSTv rebrodcasts. Take the English premier league away from DSTv, and no body will pay a dime as subscription to them. That is why they have guarded it so jealously.
Ideally, there should be no advert content in pay TV, thats why you wont find adverts on MovieMagic, Hallmark etc, yet DSTv charges us for watching adverts, and you talk about cost of programming? Abu you just dont seem to get the racket going on in the Pay TV business. This law is the best thing that could happen to that industry.

Ambyz, you are right about Glo offer.I received an sms on it from Glo.'Glo to Glo calls at N4.50/min or 10k/sec between 12a.m and 5a.m everyday until 30 Sept 2006.'

I am always available dude

Its unfortunate that Glo didn't go for something radical. But I still think it will be quite popular among the younger folks. We await Amby's Celtel Nigeria...

@All... Two of my articles was printed in The Sun newspaper on Saturday, "Me and My GSM" column. My bro called to tell me yesterday and I had to go looking for the paper. They even got my pix in full colour too. hehehehe... Jaja Bings would say, "Me-sa getting famousy"

where do i start.... where do i start.....

@coola: affordable TV we have. You can stick to NTA and watch all the Customs shows, EFCC shows etc at any time you want. But there is no such thing as AFFORDABLE FREE TV!!!! Someone has to pay, either you or advertisers. And we are just not there yet. Our economy has to turn around 1st.

This whole N2/min thing is nice for New Years eve!!! but really, only the really strapped will patronize it frequently

@pxth: have no problem with football. have problems with football fanatics!

@amby: there is one thing to invest in infrastructure (that can be sold after a while, at times even for a profit!!!!) and buying a service!!!! If your Dovemedia can step up to the plate and give DSTV a fight for there money in bidding for the services, like the rights to quality programming, they should heave ahead and do so. But until we see them do so........
There is other content that people are interested in. If they cant get football, they should look at other programming. Isnt it a shame that DSTV got its hands on the bulk of Nollywood movies?
AND A BIG CORRECTION!!!!!!!!! ESPN, Discovery and cartoon network are not free-to-air!!!!!!!! The rest on your list (Bloomberg etc) may be. ESPN Gets all its money from Rebroadcasting Fees!!!!!!! NO adverts at all!!!
I will never call it a racket as long as there are options!!! If the amount of money that goes into DSTV subscription fees from Naija footballs fanatics could have been channeled into our own FA............ Why dont you think in the 21st C we still cant watch our own FA matches, live and nationwide??? every football giant in Africa does!!!!!
Anyhow, at the end of the day, when Nigeria, some day in the future, turns things around and we start to produce quality programming for the world, this decision will turn its ugly head around and bite us in the ass!!!!
We will have super low bids coming rom countries that cant afford more, then we will see how we could maintain the programming!!!
But let me pose this question to you and others on the thread... "Can we force say FIFA to sell veiwing rights to only Nigerian Broadcasters?" In this world of Globalization??? I dont think so

Hey guys, long time
I've been chillin.
I just wanted to say that i am one week away from throwing away my vmobile line. I think vmobile has loss thier sense of innovative ideas. They dont do promos, gprs only works in few states, csd does not work at all and worst of all, the one thing i liked about them-which is the fact that they were sponsoring the t.v game show who wants to be a millonaire has been taken over by Mtn. Right now vmobile i would say is the 2nd worst network after mtel.

Secondly can someone please tell me why Efcc is after mike adenuga? i hear he is not in the country at the moment-he is cooling off in yankee. Heard they took some of his top officials at globacom and con oil for questioning.

Lastly do we need to have at least N100 to be able to make the glo call at 12am like mtn?

Posted by coolapostle
I wouldn't throw it away just yet as Celtel Nigeria (as V will be rebranded to soon) now has 1 billion dollars of cold cash to invest in its network.

I am not sure about the others... but all these promos have not changed my phone spending pattern one bit.

But... I agree their GPRS coverage is wack...I don't get any signal in my office again... for over a month now.

@coola: I know i really delayed that theme bu finally my table is clear of pending work so i'll be on it right now!!!!

Oh?, is that one of the conditions? Typical MTN stuff...

@Abu Hope the pix I sent ya are still intact ko?

@All Windows now tells me my copy of Windows is not genuine!!!! I am using the one that the FGN got thru NITDA o! The FGN is supposed to have paid Microsoft Nigeria for it.

I think I will turn-off this auto-update feature....

Well, let the FGN sort it out... I just hope I get to continue using my Win XP.... the error goes like:

==========
The Windows product key installed on this computer is a Volume License Key (VLK) that has been blocked. A VLK is typically licensed to organizations that want to use multiple copies of Windows. However, if a VLK is reported as stolen or leaked, it is blocked from passing validation and is not considered genuine.
==========

That means quite a few PC's in Abuja are in trouble.

@Mamba... I may inbox u if I deceded to take the law into my habds.

@Abu For a SE T610

You're kidding right?

Interestingly, a friend of mine who is an avid fan recently got an N70 (It was a gift, he wouldn't spend his hard earned cash on Blokias) and has been quite pleased with it, says its a nice phone.

Good for Nokia.

Posted by coolapostle
I will be off to Kano for the second time this year on Sunday. Anyone for kilishi? When I learnt HOW that thing is prepared, I swore NEVER to let one cross my lips.

When I return, I hope to have enough spare cash to plunge on a replacement for my Sendo... I want to spend the princely sum of N10,000... ...he-he-he... and I want a non-SE phone that has either BT or ir with a modem.

Any ideas please...

Posted by mamba
i'm kinda leaning towards Nokia now, i'm hoping to get the 5500 sports or N80 when the cash is available. Sonyericsson has disappointed me with the inclusion of a qwerty below the screen of the P990 which makes it similar to a blackberry. i woulda prefered a P990 with P910 build. @coola, i dont think u can get a phone with such spec at that price from any other manufacturer except sonyericsson.

Posted by Angelgirl
Easydee, dont condemn Vmobile yet, at least one can still enjoy 12 free sms per month and N10 sms during offpeak periods after u ve used up the 12 sms, and they are still the only network i can easily assess free gprs for now , i guess they are just passing thru a transitional phase at the moment.

Posted by abubakar
@amby: Im not saying that every Nokia is rubbish tho!!! Even tho if someone dashed me one i'd most likely sell it at a premium and get a SE (if my dasher wont be offended!!!!) But placing an SE and a Nokia from the same price range side by side, SE wins every time. Had a guy trying to brag about is motorola razr a few days back. Once i started on its useless camera (1.28M) he gave up!!!!

@coola: as with all food, it depends on who is preparing it!!! some people who prepare kilishi do it in very hygenic places, some not. Just be careful.
why a non-SE? the only good phone that i know that has IR, Bluetooth (and of cousre a modem) that goes for less than 10k is the SE T68i. Lets see anyone beat that!!!!!!!

@mamba: blackberry copied the design from SE!!!!!!!

The S55 still goes for like N8k, while the T68i is N5k (Both refurbished. No brand new ones available in the market)

Nice to see you here again Oga. How madam and family?

@mamba & amby: Family's fine, thanks. Finally got a little bit more time on my hands.

The S55 certainly makes up for the difference in prices against the T68i. I have used both in the past. The T68i's main edge is a longer battery life. The S55 gives you a bigger memory, java and polyphonic ringtones.
