Hmm... another quiet weekend at PNF. Just came back from visiting with some friends. I started watching Romancing the Stone with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. Was a big hit over a decade ago. I seem to have forgotten the film entirely. Will finish it tonight.
What do you Guys think of Baba's attempt to solve ALL our problems b4 he goes? The amount of monies announced after last weeks' FEC meeting for Nigerian Railway was around 1 billion dolars if I hard correctly. What will the next Prez do?
Posted by 2tek
is nilesat free to air? What are d channels like? Heard supersports premiership exclusivity has finished, basically thats the only catch of dstv. I need to know cheaper options.
Posted by ambyzown
@2Tek: Nilesat is free-to-air, but the equipment aint free at all, it'll set you back some 130 grand. Haven't heard about the expiration of DStv's exclusive broadcast of the premiership in Africa, last time I heard, it was a 10-year deal.
@Coola: I guess Baba just realised that posterity would judge him and wants to make an impact in the little time he has left. My bet is that these were the plans he had for the deceased third term in office.
Howz everyone doing?

@2tek: I got mine for 38k 2 yrs back. that included dish decoder, wires and installation. its unless the foot print doesnt reach Lagos with good service strength and you need added equipement. If you guys are paying 130k let me start supplying y'all from hre!!!!

@2Tek... My friend is into Satellite... he has a dish that gives him Euro Leagues free. Not sure of the price. There is one for 30k that has several South African stations like SABC1,2,3 eTV, and sevaral Christians Stations.
How far with your Vmobile Vactive wahala?
@Amby... Baba is looking at all those billions and wants to sink them into projects b4 someone else squanders them all. With Okonjo-Iweala out of the way, there is no check on his way. Don't be surpirsed that each contractor will "drop" something into the PDP's Political Campaign Funds.
Posted by brix25
@coola: That would be Sentech's Vivid digital platform. I can't believe people in Nigeria actually watch South African television...Only a few shows are worth watching on SABC's channels...the best one would be SABC3.
Posted by 2tek
Your buddy that watches d euro leagues does that incl premiership.
I haven't tried using vactive via pc yet. Its strugglin to connect via wap,i can't even use opera wit it,but i'm managin wit d 550i browser which is aight.

Yep, everything ppl pay DSTV for.
@brix... I haven't asked him to rate the stations. But, I think eTV shows good movies... 2 weekends ago, I watched "A Bug's Life" at my brothers house. .. he has the same thing too. Some of the Christian Videos I watch on one of the channels, JCTV, are the same stuff I am hearing on my Internet radio when I tune in using Windows Media Player.
RESULTS: The SA thread had just 4 pages and 57 posts more to catch-up with the 9ja thread. Oya o!

I do not know which sort of free to air satellite systems you guys are talking about, but I know for sure that only the decoder is sold for B/W N18-24k so how the entire system could be installed for N35k beats me. The dishes being sold in the N130k package are motorised and so are able to pick signals from several satellites as soon as you enter the co-ordinates into the decoder.
Posted by coolapostle

That is why he is in the Satellite biz and we are not. His dishes are not motorised and remember that the size u need in the north maybe smaller than the one u need in the south.
(Ain't that nice: we in the north are closer to heaven than you Guys in the south.)
I think his decoder is around 15k and the dish is around 20k. But the dish for the Euro Leagues is a bigger one and it faces a different direction.
Posted by abubakar
@amby, coola, 2tek: the dishs are not motorized, about 4 feet diameter and the stations are majorly in arabic but the few english stations (ONETV which shows american tv shows and movies, MBC2 which shows movies 24hrs and MBC4 also showing american tv shows, movies and american news programs like ABC and CBS). That combo of 3 stations keeps me busy. Ask ur satelite dealers about it.

@pxth: The way violence has come into politics, dont be surprized if UN peace keepers are patroling our streets by 2007!!!! Opponents to our gov here have been stipped naked & beaten up to near death, campain offices painted black, family houses burnt to the ground. when i heard about williams i thot naija is in trouble!!!! Is it true he was strangled to death? thats too cold.

@Abu... Na wa for this our country oh. I initially heard he was found in a pool of blood. Now the story has changed. STRANGLED. Lagosians what is the true story?
Posted by coolapostle
I saw the headlines that Ogunlewe and one Obanikoro have been taken in for questioning...
Let's not forget the many other local Government-level victims like Councilor and Chairmanship aspirants that get wacked off regularly but never make it to the front page. Its been happening regularly. May God help his family.
Posted by ambyzown
The manner of death metted out to the late Engr Williams was truly gruesome. He was shot in the stomach, stabbed severally, tied hands and legs -like you do to a goat when you want to cut its neck- and left to die in a pool of his own blood. Yet there were no signs of a struggle or forced entry
Posted by coolapostle
How sad. Even sadder is when they finally (if ever) catch the killers... you will probably hear that they were paid as low as 10k to do the job.
2007 is warming up... Atiku says he has stuff to say about Baba that will "shock all of us". Oh boy... yummy....
What do you Guys think of Pat Utomi's candidacy...?
Posted by Dejitella
political desperation could only serve one interest, and that will be the interest of the desperado. How could one justify the killing of Engr Funsho williams, politicians are showing us they are not just politicians but as well murderers. May his soul rest in peace. Well an incumbent minister of justice was once killed and justice elude him too, i doubt if this will be any different.

Pat Utomi has everything to be president but he will never make it to the ROCK. He has not got enough evil genius in him.

Today is my spiritual birthday. On August 1st 2003, I had just finished my Youth Service and I was a thoroughly deflated and humbled individual. My Service Year so nasty. For the first time in my life, I felt a need for God.
Not that I was a bad boy per se... things always worked for me (thanks to the spiritual covering of my folks... I later found out). I never took 3rd position all thru my Primary school... entered University before my 16th birthday and was done by 21.
So the Service Year was a shocker. EVERYTHING went wrong. Couldn't get a place to serve... money troubles.... terrible.
So on that faithful Sunday, I decided to "try God" at the "Night of Bliss" Service at Alausa, Ikeja. Pastor Chris Oyakhilome preached.
13 years later... here I am.
And, oh I got a job 3 months later and have been working ever since.
Posted by pxthomas
@coola... Happy spiritual birthday. The Lord will surely perfect his works in you

Happy spiritual birthday Coola, Na wa o, you seem younger than i thot.

@coola: I've never been able to put a finger on why actually, but I dont just like Pat. I have varied veiw with him on many topics but that is not why. Its something about his style and manner that puts me of. Any way, I dont think he's got what it takes for presidency yet but he'd make a good advisor. He has the insight and foresight but we dont know if his political integrity can withstand the onslaught that the high chair recieves. now that youre on awoof Mtel, whats stopping you from joining team Naija???

@amby: what does our police know of signs of forces entry? the crime scene would have been so contaminated before anyone with real forensic knowledge (if we have one!!!!!) gets on the scene. Its not only a splintered door or a broken window that constitutes forced entry. But they wouldnt see that.

@Abu I have not heard your view yet on who a good Prez candidate is...
My only fear about Pat is that he will have a cold, calculating, heart like "Havard-trained" el-Rufai. All they want is to brag about how much they made for the govt. People don't mean anything to them.

@coola: a few months back on the thread I think I can remember putting Gov. Muazu of Bauchi state up for it. I am very impresed with the policies that he has been able to put in place and REAL results are not in the pipeline but have already been seen. At the same time he has not been building mansions in the sky. He is very down to earth. My gov (SAS) started his own reign by not living in the Government House but renting a house using govt coffers for N150,000,000 a year!!! and guess who owns the house? Its his own house!!!!!! Only in naija can that happen and EFCC will come and go, giving the state a clean bill of health!!!! you never answer my SETI question!!!!

Among the northern Govs Muazu tops my list as the BEST... followed my Makarfi. I saw Markafi's advertorial on his Democratic Dividends in the papers last week.... boy... I wonder how Dariye -my yeye Gov- will feel when he sees it.
May Muazu win....
But.... what can one "holy" Prez do if he is surrounded by crooks and sharks in the National Assembly? I think we need a re-think about what constitutes a good Prez.
@Abu... SETI? My Opera Transfer window is choked with many downloads... I hope BOINC or whatever won't reduce my speed. I will register and let u know.

@coola: Better!! at least i got 2 people from PNF on SETI!!! Maikarfi hasnt been bad, per say, but i havent seen any real developements in KD in his term. Dont get me wrong. Maintaining status quo in Naija is a feat of its own!!! If the roads in Maiduguri were as good as it was during Marwa's stint here I would been a happier motorist. As the old joke goes, the roads are so bad, its only the drunk that drive straight while the sober swerve!!!! talking about Marwa, what are his chances? I would have liked him but Im tired of old soldiers!!!!

Like I wrote in my last post.... it takes more than ONE holy man to run a successful Government. The problem with the ex-soja's is that they tend to ignore the other democratic institutions when it suits them.
Then they think in terms of command-and-conquer instead of dialogue-and-compromise.
Marwa may have done well as a military adminstrator but...if he has crooks as advisers and sharks in the senate.... he won't do much.
Why can't ppl like Pat/Marwa do what Adam Oshiomole is doing: go for Governor first?
Next: Buhari.. what do u think of the man?

I would've been surprised if Mrs. Iweala hadn't resigned, it would've proved she didn't have intergrity. Whatever transpired, one day we will know, but for now we can only speculate as to the cause of her resignation.
On the Pat Utomi presidency bid, I agree with the person who posited that Pat has the wherewithal to make a good president, but lacks the "evil genius" it takes to navigate the murky waters of Nigerian politics.
Posted by abubakar
@coola: I always thot that Mrs Okonjo-Iweala's arrival in OBJ's administration was going to stain her. I was surprised she stayed as long as she did. I suspect they were ble to keep the smell of cooked books away from her all this while but as she knew things were rounding up she did a once over on things and got the shock of her life. Any how, she was brought for eye-candy. I dont think she ever really had any space to move things. And this cabinet reshuffle was a joke.

@all what have you guys to say about the new proposition by efcc that cafe operators nw have the right to SPY on cafe users in addition to barring night browsing.
Posted by coolapostle
I must confess I just read the new EFCC "law" just a few days ago. I was shocked at the amount of powers they have been given like:
- all Cybercafes/GSM/Telecoms operators must provide the names, phone numbers and addresses of their clients when asked for.
I think implementing it will be difficult... and will only make the crooks smarter. Besides... they will need some serious tools to be able to track ppl that browse in cybercafes.
So are they saying I have to fill a form b4 browsing in a cybercafe?
Can anyone autheticate the info I will give?
Is the EFCC able to capture all the data that will be generated?
What surprised me is how I never heard about the review of the law all this time. How can we allow such?
Posted by pxthomas
someone should please explain this new EFCC law. It appears they want to take away my fundamental human right.
Human right na my property
Posted by brix25
@coola: In South Africa a similiar law came into practice a couple of months back...at most of the official retail stores whenever you buy a sim card you have to show your ID book so your details can be captured...most ppl don't mind the biggest opposition came from the cellphone networks cause it would cost them money to store all this information.

Ok... I just cut-and-pasted some of the stuff:
*....President Obasanjo had in June, this year, granted his assent to a new
law requiring service providers to keep records of internet users in the
country and register with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
(EFCC) under a programme to check the use of electronic communication
network to combat fraud. *
*The new law, the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act 2006, also repeals the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences No 13 of 1995 as well as the Advance Fee Fraud And Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2005.
*"Any person whose normal course of business involves the provision of
non-fixed line or Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) or is in the management of any such services, shall submit on demand to the Commission such data and information as are necessary or expedient for giving full effect to the performance of the functions of the Commission under this Act", says the anti-fraud law.*

@coola: its all bull****!!! Our govt likes to put up frivalous laws that impenge on the rights of the many to over thoer own lapses. If I'm a 419er, at the rates that phone companies are offering internet now + the cheap costs of 2nd hand computers, do i need to go to a cafe? Place your bets here: How many people will they actually catch after a year of implementing this law?? If its up to 10 i'll be surprised. Its like how theyve outlawed overnight buses cos of bad roads and armed robbers. Instead of fixing the problem, they are trying to impede our rights as a quick fix. soon they'll say no falling sick on weekends because doctors will be at home!!!!
@all: another bad day in the middle east. Hezbolla keeps increasing their range into Israel, Israelis keep killing innocents, destroying bridges, power stations, sewage systems, shopping areas, Oil infirmaries???? No proof that any militants in the areas bombed. How can this madness stop?
(and all the while, oil prices hit the roof, Naija officials are making serious money while we languish in poverty!!!!)

Hey guyz! i read thru ur posts 'bout the EFCC's new fight against cyber crime in naija. I don't think our human rights will be messed with 'cos such laws should be well reviewed b4 being implemented(though i know "our nation" might nt put dat into due consideration). And also, as for d registeration of cyber cafes, u should already stuffs like this don't work out fine. good number of cyber cafe's patronize"yahoo boys" & depend on them as their main source of income. Therefore, in order not fall into EFCC's net, they(the cafe's) will eventually buy their way out. U all know 9ja now?
