Yes I heard so, but he was released yesterday.
Does anyone know the true reason for which he was arrested?

According to the dailies it's has something to do with funds from Petroluem Development Fund which is chaired by Atiku Abubakar.
Stormy days ahead for Atiku I see (Master Yoda)

Is there an answer to this question?

Posted by brix25
@mamba: Yes, theoretically it is possible...afaik it's been done overseas quite successfully there's also been talk that our Second Network Operator might use powerlines to deliver broadband to South Africans as Eskom( our national electricity utility) owns an equity stake in the new network. Right now people can only access wired broadband through Telkom (who own 50% of Vodacom) which is the South African equivalent of Nitel but only more profitable.

phcn is still battlin wit supply of electricity, pls they shouldn't be saddled wit transmission of broadband. atimes i wonder if an average phcn transformer can cope wit 1 week of constant electricity. em transformers will def pack up. has anybody tried d new starcom evdo?

Posted by ambyzown
IMHO Starcomms EVDO broad band service is rather expensive. At N20k monthly subscription and an intitial N45k for the pc card which can only be used with laptop pc's (except of course, if it is possible to install a PCMCIA slot on your desktop pc) I think its a waste of hard-to-come-by resources. Apart from coverage, My Netcom broadband is a cheaper alternative

Thats a whole lotta cash,i wonder what goes on this peoples mind when they come out wit all these expensive options. Its my first time in abuja, both mtn and vmobile gprs r just timin out. Pls can i use vactive as a gprs modem,i've been tryin all night.

What I think you guys are talking about is the fibre-optic ring that HAS ALREADY been installed along the NEPA transmission lines. NEPA had signed an agreement with a Tech company to use it as a Telecom backbone. This was done a few months ago.

So I think it is about THAT fibre-optic cable. What will bring the data to our homes will NOT be the same electric copper wire we are currently using.

@2Tek... Where have you been? We had trashed out Vactive GPRS awhile back. I have forgotten the apn but the Username and password is internet/internet... I think. Call CC or read the posts of a few months back.

Posted by ambyzown
@2tek: *99***2# vmobile gprs hasn't been working for a while, and the password/username is wap, APN is wap.vmobile.
@coola: optic fibre ring is a different medium from the power distribution lines we were discussing here.

Posted by mamba
I still don't understand this broadband/electric thing, probaby cos i've not done any research yet. is it the same Nepa electric wires we have that will be used to distribute the service? in that case there's gonna be a risk of electric shock hazards from 240v. Even if the neutral line was used as the medium, the hazards are still there if there's a thunder-storm.

Goodnews! Coola now out of the GPRS rat-race thanks to MTel GPRS.

Smooth sailing all the way. Best download speeds I have seen so far. Max 14KB/s.

My only worry is whether Mtel GPRS signals will work at my home unlike Vmobile's discriminatory GPRS. Will send a report later.

Posted by mamba
@coola, how did u config it?

Posted by coolapostle
The biggest hindrance to MTel is that you must know someone in the Switch. They have to enter your number into their system b4 U start seeing the GPRS signal. Abu had already told us that b4.

Until U get that, nothing I give will work.

I wonder why Mtel is hoarding this thing.. i think it's high time they throw it open for guys cos their customer base is in a downward trend already. imagine a total black-out for weeks because of strike.. that's more than enought to loose half of their customers. They've been announcing & making noise about gprs, edge, 3g etc. & people can't access it unless via insiders, that's rubbish..

The situation(vicious cycle of violence) will remain the same unless d western world(especially USA and Britain) change their biased view of that region. The Palestinians are suffering. N.B. I don't support terrorism nor unjust aggression

I suspect it is a capacity problem. The network has enough stress already.

Ah! its good to browse from my home PC after 5 months! There goes my quality sleep.

@Ibrahim... Connections, my brother, connections. You don't need to even beg. But, it is just that it will cost you a lot of "favour" points.

@all... I may be able to help a few BUT it will take a couple of months for me to cultivate a relationship with the Guy. I can't pull it off until around September or October. And I will give preference to only PNF gurus like Mamba who won't need anyone to hold their hand and walk them thru.

MTel GPRS is as Abubakar said it will be... it will take time.

@Mamba: Power lines can be used as carriers of data or voice signals over long distances. NEPA or PHCN currently uses this technology to monitor its HV transmission network. Remember that one single cable can carry multiple signals, as long as each signal has a distinctive frequency. (Voltage is not a hinderance here). The simple wire line telephone actually works on this principle, only that the voltages in that application are usually about 24Volts.

Let me try to explain how this will work.
PHCN acquires internet connection using a fibre optic backbone or wireless link, and feeds (or if you like, superimposes) this signal using special coupling equipment to the power lines. further de-coupling and re-coupling equipment are required at each transformer stage before it gets to individual homes. To access this service, a subscriber simply plugs in a BPL(Broadband over Power Lines) modem to any power outlet and connects his computer to the modem to get data rates in the region of 25Mbit/sec. So you see the risk of an electric shock here is as great as charging your mobile phone.

However, there are downsides to the use of this technology that have hindered its widespread use. Remember that power lines are bare cables without shielding or insulation, which technically makes them one very large antenna, so they are prone to interferences from other radio signals which eventually corrupt the signal it was meant to carry, and vice versa.

The merit of this technology is the cost saving feature, being that almost every home and office has existing power connections, and require no additional cabling to take advantage of the service. Also uplink and downlink speeds are assymetric (equal).

I'll try to find literature online about this technology and post it here.

@Amby I seriously doubt if NEPA has anything near this kind of technology on ground o! Maybe after 2056

@2tek: been offline for some days hence the delay in response. the number isnt *9***2#. Its *99***?# where the "?" stands for your phone's external id number. Check it in your account info in your phone. Most likely yours is 2 thus your number is *9***2#.

@all: whats all this talk about internet by high tension up till now? we all know NEPA/PHCN cant maintain basicservices. if they dare attempt this theyll end up frying thier equipment. and they'll still be charging you for the full month while they are down!!!

@deji: since no one wanted to take your bait on the middle east....

The plain truth is Israel keeps acting like the terrorists they are fighting. I have no qualms with the israelis hitting Hezbolla's soldiers on the feild, rocket launchers etc. but for them to shoot into towns, destoying buildings where they "suspect" the terrorists live, killing the families and neighbour, its too gruesome for a "ligit" state. for God's sake they hit they airports, bridges and the sewage system!!! For what? they are trying to breakdown Lebanon's sprouting infrastructure.

@coola: Welcome to Mtel!! Really, the network barely takes voice hear so it would be hard for them to open up to a large number of gprs subscribers. Im expecting you to join Team Naija!!!

@Abu... i responded to deji earlier on. But what is the problem with NEPA/PHCN?

Posted by abubakar
@pxth: are you sure you are in Delta??? Are you really askin me whats wrong with NEPA??? not to state the obvious, if NEPA cant retrieve the billions upon billions they claim they are owed (how it amounted to such a number they know!!!!), how can they roll out another service successfully? I'll scan for your comment @deji.

Posted by pxthomas
@Abu...You got me wrong there. I mean why can't NEPA/PHCN live up to its obligation. We have both human and material resources to make it work but it is not working. Do we need to consult oracle?

That is the cue for another round of discussions about corruption my broz. I remember a few years ago when I lived in a face-me-I-face-you. Our NEPA power came via an arrangement by a NEPA Official thru an underground cable that passed under the road. The Guy had tens of customers.

We -four of us- paid him 200 bucks/mo. That worked out at 50 bucks each. No NEPA bill or disconnection. Beat that.

Multipy that by a couple of millions of similar cases and you see why NEPA can never make it in its present configuration.

The FGN is building Power Plants everywhere... except that the Niger Delta Boys can still blow up the pipelines AGAIN like they did on Feb 18, 2006.

@coola: apart from your petty misdemeanor, they claim to have onrecord billions owed to them. They claim most of the heavy debts come from military, police and customs barracks, etc as well as ministeries. its all bull****.

on another topic, just got back a few days ago so i'll start on your themes asap.

@pxth: read your comment in a confrontational tone (as always!!!) my bad!!! in any biz there is always the prime directive!!!! KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE MONEY!!!!! since most nepa staff do not look at nepa as thier "father's own" they could allow such credit to build up without a drop of sweat. the problem is, as long as its a monopoly no matter if its NEPA or PHCN or Transcorp it will still be rotten to a degree. a nother company with proffessionals in power management have to tke it over from foundation to roof for it to turn around. any element left would be like leaving a peice of malignant cancer.

Posted by ambyzown
@Abu: I decided to keep mute about the seti@home project because I just couldn't see how I would allow my pc to be invaded by a third party programme using internet connections I pay for. How do I control what is being done on my system?

On the BPL issue, no one is advocating that PHCN should venture into internet service provision, someone merely asked about its feasibility and we tried to provide answers.

Posted by abubakar
@amby: yeah, its true if your a bit paranoid about access by a 3rd party but since one already has so many 3rd party apps like messenger etc I dont mind this one. Its an established Organization, not a group of hackers. But its always better to be safe than sorry, right?

@all: any other comments?

Some one criticised the film at the South African thread yesterday or so. I will probably watch it. Of all the Comic Flicks, I want to watch the X-Men more than others. But I want to watch the whole trilogy at once.

Why do you want to send an anonymous SMS my broz? I know I can send a "flash" SMS from my PC using software like Float's Mobile Agent (FMA) and My Phone Explorer. I learnt about them here in Esato.

A flash SMS just rings and appears on your phone screen.... no need to go the SMS Inbox and dissappears without be stored after you finish.

@all Anything special going on in your life this weekend?

Posted by coolapostle
Well, this morning... I am watching my Adventures DVD, starting with "Sahara". The DVD has the Indiana Jones trilog, Romancing the Stone and Jewel of the Nile.

Sahara's opening scenes are in "Lagos" ... had to laugh... that place is no where near the real Lagos. But I think the film looks promising so far...

@coola: not all off us has free weekends like you O!!!! i wish i could say im spending the weekend watching movies!!!! it takes me days (usually 8 - 10 sittings!!!) to watch one movie. I just cram the time i stopped last then continue next time. Shows on nilesat's MBC4 and ONETV take up all extra time.

@2tek: what are you doing with hidden txts? want to send anonimous love letters to a secret admirer or you want to 419??? anywhich way, before i look for a high tech solution i look for a low tech solution!! Buy a new sim and use it to send your mystery msgs!!!!!

I use software on my PC: Float's Mobile Agent and My Phone Explorer. I reccomend My Phone Explorer. Just search for it here in Esato, download it and test it. I have not heard of Flash SMS done from a Phone.

@All Ok, I finished "Sahara". Well, its not as super as Indie Jones but its fun to watch. It was a little annoying to see them use another country and call it Lagos. Then their geography was crazy...

In the film, from Lagos they entered a boat and, straight-away, they were cruising along the "Niger River"... refueled somewhere in Nigeria... and landed in Mali... oh come'on. In real life, that would mean: Lagos-Niger-Delta-Lokoja-Kainji-next country. I think they should have started the film at, say, Lokoja... but...

Then there is a party scene with our flag hung wrongly. It was rotated 90 degrees!

Thank God all the "fighting" scenes were not supposed to be in Nigeria even though I am sure some Hollywood scripts now have Niger-Delta "militias" (I hate using that word) in it.

Makes me wonder how accurate the film was about the "Mali" scenes.

Lesson: Take Hollywood's depictions of certain countries/cultures with a pinch of salt.
