@AYA: I thought Nigerians were good at boycotts? Right now Vodacom is slashing prices on their branded phones forgetting to tell buyers that they'll be limited to using only Vodafone's live portal to download any content. Guess who won't be buying a branded handset from Vodacom?
Posted by OluYom
@brix: Yes, I was at the SA thread today. Its pathetic really, that branded phone bit of business.
Unfortunately, it takes a little bit of push to get Nigerians to boycott anything. But seeing I have started this 'war', I intend to pursue it to a logical conclusion.
Posted by egunjespoilagos
I will support anything that will engender quality service.
AYA: These problems with glo's GPRS service is making me rethink my impending sign-up for "business 400". You wouldn't know anything about glo's GPRS service in Gbagada and Ikeja, would you?
When do you intend to declare ware on glo
Does anyone know why so many senior people are leaving MTN Nigeria?
Posted by Tahir Ally
I know they are going through some finnancial problems in CAMEROON.10 companies are suing MTN in that country
Posted by mamba
I too have also been considering switching to glodirect but for the recent incidence with AYA, I'm putting the switch on hold for sure.
I'm not about to sign a contract with glo and start bitting my fingers realizing that the service will remain down for long periods of time running into a month, no way!
This war is surely getting HOT!!
About MTN, I never liked them for anything, they are just exploiting people in Nigeria.....
Posted by brix25
@mamba: Don't see how MTN has exploited Nigerians, their only crime has been the fact that they've been profitable despite scepticism amongst the investment community in Western countries...now that they've showed that business can be conducted in Africa's most populous state other companies are jumping on the bandwagon. MTN may not be popular amongst nationalist in Nigeria but their contribution to the economy cannot be called into question.
Posted by Tahir Ally
@ Mamba maybe all MTN senior staff a moving to IRAN.They just open an office over there
Posted by OluYom
I removed my Glo SIM this morning and replaced it with MTN. A little more expensive checking mails and browsing on the move at 18 kobo per second. But definitely better than Glo's inconsistency.

glo GPRS is finally down at my end too!!
I wonder what's going on?
BTW, what are the 10 companies suing MTN for in CAMEROON?
Posted by coolapostle
Here is my theory: when Glo is trying to 'fix' its GPRS components, they have to run off certain sections systematically. It happened just before they started billing us in November last year (or December?) after the initial 'freebie' months (September-November). Now they are going back to "freebies" again and the process is repeated. It usually starts from Lagos, then it will hit me in Abuja a few weeks later. It usually lasts for one week here. AYA down your weapons! They will come back on. It has happened before.
Posted by mamba
GPRS is back up!!
AYA, check your end?

Approved GSM Handsets
I remember that someone on this thread asked if we have a body that approves handsets for use in Nigeria. Well, the body is NCC as AYA told us and they even have a list of approved GSM handsets which has been copied to:
http://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-146.0.html
My phone is on the list. Who has a phone that is not on the list?
Posted by OluYom
@cool: Too late. The first salvos have been fired and cannot be recalled. Glo could simply have notified us of maintenance. But 4 weeks for such? Still unacceptable.
@seun: The last time I looked, my 9500 was not on NCC's list of approved phones
Posted by mamba
AYA, Your 9500 will soon be confiscated, it's illegal property
GPRS was actually on at my end while I thought it went off, I browsed below =N=0.0 and was disconnected. I recharged then restarted my phone and it's back up..
AYA, plzzz forgive glo, give them a second chance....
Posted by egunjespoilagos
AYA: NOOOOOOOO! We will never agree you must attack them. We will never agree.
Still watching the glodirect thing....I trust that thought the GPRS may be patchy, the voice service has been up?
What is the "wuruji" with the MTN Nigeria resignations
Posted by Demmy
Funny!!! very funnny with all the planned attacks on
"GloReliability has nothing to do with a service being available at one or a few locations. Its about it being available everywhere it should be available and at all times." - AYA
just as AYA said they ought 2 b able 2 cover everywhre simultaneously. And 2 add 2 what coolaposple said, me think it has to do with their database. It happens that when their database requirment exceeds what they had catered 4 they will just have 2 shut som ppl off...me think they need an OCM Oracle Certified Master.

Fire on AYA, I am considering storming glo office with my latest 'state of the art' offensive weapons of mass destruction: prayer warriors paratroopers capable of 144 days of dry fasting. Boy, is glo in trouble!
Posted by OluYom
@mamba: Forget that Glo side. No point flogging the issue. When GPRS is back up at my location Glo knows how to get in touch.
Posted by Areafada
@mamba, What do u mean confiscate 9500's, don't 4get I also use a 9500.
@brym, Prayer warrior indeed
@Aya, pls reconsider, although it's a nobel course, but reconsider, It's better 2 dine with d devil u know, than Mtn that does nothin good/u don't know.
Posted by OluYom
@Areafada: Don't worry one bit about me. Its just a protest, though i may carry it further. I will use the MTN line till Glo sits up - and God help Glo should MTN launch GPRS (or EDGE!) before they do sit up. In which case I'll simply forget the Glo SIM where it is
Meanwhile, NCC is just living in the past with that their approved phone list. The newest phone on the list the last time I checked was the Nokia 6600. Imagine!
@coola: On closer scrutiny, that your theory won't hold water at all. How come none of the customer care (and GPRS dept) guys I have spoken with every other day for 4 weeks have been able to say "We are casrrying out maintenance"?

Regarding the list of NCC approved phones, there was a list published in the Punch about a week ago with a list I considered rather current, The list was in at least two parts was about 150 phones long. It included the Nokia 9500 among others.
Its neither here nor there but my two kobo's worth.

Ok, I am laying off Glo's back. I sheathe my swords based on Glo assuring me that their engineers are on to my case .
I'll just endure the show a while. But when next I pick it up, I will go all the way.

AYA, how did they manage to contact you?

@ all includin Aya, GPRS is workin fine in my home town, Okun-owa, Odogbolu LGA in Ogun State.
Posted by OluYom
@areafada: That's great. I doubt if there's any Glo coverage of my hometown, Ikerre in Ekiti State yet
But I'm sure they will get there ... someday.

AYA: N9000/month. Though they will retain 20% as an access charge, they call it security deposit. I had a glo classic line earlier and the GPRS service was patchy at the office and at home.
I guess the point for me will be the ability to use the GPRS anywhere.
Its the deposit, read surcharge, of N10000 for IDD that irritates.
I hope to be "provisioned" and good to go on Monday.

I see. A decision I made too is to subscribe for internet access from a PTO for my residence where I also have an office. That way, Glo can stay on break at my residence for a millenium if they so choose to.Even if and when Glo GPRS returns, it wont be the same again, as GloDirect will automatically stay 2nd place and be used when NEPA is off and when I am on the go. GloMobile's loss.

PeaceTalk wired line. They are already at your location. It's dialup at 56kbps, and needs no public power supply.
I'll post other details here ASAP.

hey guys. go on today. doing this from out a mobil petro station in my area. it dosen't seem bad at all. still learning the ropes though. the number is 08055025284. anyone want to send me mms

What's up with people giving out their numbers on the internet?
Posted by 2tek
I weak o, in this age of 419 guys shld b more careful wit their numbers. @all, please i was tryin to config a motorola A835 for glogprs last nite,it asked for port no. which i don't know. Does any one have it.
Posted by seunosewa
@2tek: Even though I don't give out my phone number on the Internet, I don't see any danger in it. In fact, it is 'safer' than giving out your email address (which I do) since anybody who wants to contact you with your phone number has to spend money. This is false alarm!
You guys might be interested in a report that MTN will soon start selling lines beginning with '0806':
"0806" Phone Numbers on MTN Nigeria Network. (register)
What do you think?

I wanted to reply brix yesterday but both my connections home and newly connected glo connection would not work.
Seun pretty much say's it all. There is little risk of any real harm. Our sane/pyscho ration is low
If we lived in a society where we had a database where things like phone numbers where "chained" to your other details such as address...etc maybe I would worry.....as we don't I'm not

Use 9201. 8080 and 9200 also work but have restrictions on WAP accounts.

Are all ads in Naija this bad...saw JJ Okocha in an ad for LG and they made the poor fellow sing, hope they paid him a lot of money for making a fool of himself.
Posted by egunjespoilagos
Heard it on radio. It was truely terrible. I wonder about the mindless ad agency that thought it up. He was probably well paid though
Posted by OluYom
2tek: Glo sent round some new provisioning using proxy with port 3130.
Posted by brix25

Yeah, I suppose they paid him well. I've seen better ads from Nigerian, especially the ones for Glo which are of a high standard.
Just BTW which is the largest network in Nigeria? Glo or MTN?

MTN has an uncomfortable lead over Glo
Posted by brix25
@AYA: Why uncomfortable?
Posted by OluYom
| Quote: |
|
Its uncomfortable because Glo keeps on closing that gap by the day. Glo has beaten Vmobile (which had a 3year start alongside MTN) to 2nd place, and is trailing closely.
I don't have the actual figures for subscribers on both Glo and MTN off-head, but I could post it later.
But statistics show that Glo is the fastest growing network in Nigeria and one of the fastest growing on the continent.
Posted by seunosewa
They have been the fastest growing since inception, but that doesn't mean they are the fastest growing network at this point in time!
The fact that AYA, the greatest Glo supporter, could declare war on Glo means that the GPRS unreliability issue might have cost them a lot of potential subscribers!
Posted by brix25
So I take it MTN does not offer GPRS. You guys need to come visit SA, both networks(Voda &MTN) have widespread GPRS... Right now I'm in a small town outside of Cape Town and I've got brilliant GPRS reception.
