Correct.

Aboutthe cyber party, let me wait for Glo GPRS to resurrect at my end or I may miss the party myself

@angelgirl, I tried ur link & the yahoo mm did not load.

It worked on mine, who else tried it, cool?

Posted by coolapostle
Does the version of wap in a phone affect its ability to view Yahoo messenger? I read some1 in the SA thread who said he registered for esato.com via wap. Something we all thought was not possible. @Angel: what is the version of wap on your phone? U may have to check you user guide for that.

Guys, there are loads of new stuff at http://gosmartmobile.com. Check out:
1. my Nokia 9500 review, and
2. a new section on CDMA mobile data

Don't also forget to check out April's site statistics on the 1st of May!!!

i was never able to get Yahoo or MSN messenger to work on WAP. I gave up after a while. Anybody who succeeds should let us know

@Cool, My wap version is 1.2, whenever i open esato thru wap, i see options wap 2.0 and wap 1.0, i always select wap 1.0, maybe wap 2.0 option will have additional features, but i have not tried it, since my version of wap is not up to that

Posted by OluYom
@coola: I have browsed Esato WAP on 1.1, 1.2, 2.0 and XHTML WAP browsers and I know I have not come across a means to register via WAP yet.

I tried it again just now. Its not there. The guy who made that claim must have registered in his dream or my name is Frank Spencer

Posted by coolapostle
I was surprised too! Especially after a mod here had told me emphatically that it could not be done. @Brym! Your joke was really good. Ha! "Wireless..." Is Angelgirl still using yahoo messenger?

Posted by mamba
I tried the yahoo messenger link & it doesn't work. i have a yahoo messenger java app that can work but i don't have glodirect internet to try it since it can only work with internet & not wap access.

About the MobileNigeria issue:

It is too bad that I had to kill MobileNigeria at around the time it was gaining momentum. I'm so sorry that I have upset a lot of people by this move. I honestly feel I had no choice.

Coolapostle, I can understand why you would want to start a forum to replace MobileNigeria. I actually thought AYA was already doing just this! Please feel free to borrow some of the resources I have at my disposal (about 2.5gb of free web space, lots of bandwidth)

However, there is no need to bury Nairaland yet! It is a young forum and there are 118 registered members already! You can access it via:
WAP 1.0 http://wap.nairaland.com
WAP 2.0 http://wap2.nairaland.com
IMODE http://imode.nairaland.com

My to-do list for Nairaland is as high as Mount Kilimanjaro! Anyway, I guess ESATO is the best when it comes to pure mobile discussions.

Posted by brix25
@seunosewa: I see your site is also available in i-mode....Anyone actually use i-mode outside of Japan and the Netherlands.

Posted by seunosewa
I know about at least one person who imported a i-mode phone into the country and had problems getting it to work with GloDirect.

Posted by brix25
Is there no organisation in Nigeria that checks phones for compatibility with local networks before they're imported? In SA the three networks do their own testing, so does the telecoms regulator.

Posted by seunosewa
In this case I believe the person travelled abroad and simply brought the phone into the country. There's no body that tests phones as far as I know. Can you send me a link of the website of the organization that tests imported phones in your country?

Posted by brix25
@seunosewa: www.icasa.org.za

Posted by OluYom
Lord knows how many times I have come across newspaper ads touting the features of a phone - and i-mode is listed as one of them! As if it would do anybody any good here. No networks outside of Japan and a very few European nations support i-mode, to the best of my understanding.

Testing? Nope. NCC does some sort of screening and has a list of approved handsets. Unfortunately, the list is very dated. The newest phone on the list is the Nokia 6600! That was released in what year?! According to NCC, my 9500 does not qualify. Story!!

@seun: I accepted MN's death long b4 you announced it. I knew it was going to happen. The "why" of the killing was - and still is - what is hard for me to accept. But I guess it does not really matter; or does it?

Anyway, good work on how you have made Nairaland interoperable. Very impressive.

We have a week till April is gone and still no news of GPRS from both Mtel and Vmobile. No news about ANYTHING from MTN. Will a miracle happen in the next few days?

Posted by brix25
@AYA: MTN might drop a bomb an announce that they've lowered GPRS tariffs:-) Down here it's seems like some people insist that SA subscribers all 20 million of us use branded phones that have limited functionality.

Posted by mamba
I called Mtel customer care like 2 weeks ago and one lady told me to go to their service center at Ikeja that gprs is available and only on postpaid.

Posted by brix25
@mamba: Now that's retarded.

Posted by seunosewa
How is it retarded?

Posted by brix25
To only have GPRS for post-paid subscribers.

Posted by mamba
I agree with Brix cos i see no reason where gprs should be limited to postpaid only. i'm not about to go sign a contract with Mtel of all operators cos of gprs, to hell with them.

Posted by otokx
nothing is going to happen AYA; MTEL really is still expanding its netwo
rk; even though i can see their mast from my office i still have 3 at most 4 out of the 5 bars on my T630; still waiting to be surprised by MTEL.

Posted by brym!
@ all, this is my first glodirect post: quite refreshing browsing the web on a smartphone. @ angel. Got my mms?

Posted by Angelgirl
@brym! Ok, so that was you, i thought as much, thanks, expecting more, i need hifi ringtones

I agree that Mtel's stand is a very retarded one. No point talking about it though.

I really hope MTN 'surprises' us, as much as I don't like Yellow

@brym: Welcome to the club. Now you know what you've been missing.

@all: I have been in bed with a fever since saturday. I'm posting this from Mr Biggs where I am having the 1st meal I have enjoyed in days. Of course, GPRS is yet to be back at my residence/office

Posted by brym!
@AYA, Sorry O! Hope you observed malaria day yesterday? GPRS is down in my area too and I am wondering if the RELTEL offer wouldn't have been better . .<

Posted by otokx
@AYA; wishing you a very quick recovery

Posted by brix25
I can't believe you guys are having problems with GPRS... The networks should be held to account for promising services which they clearly can't deliver. That's just my two cents from a sunny Cape Town.

Posted by otokx
@AYA, pls do get well fast, a bit of sunshine may help.

And you have my 'amen' to that, buddy. I read GloMobile the riot act this week and told them in plain terms that I would drop their line, contract or not, if by the 1st of May this issue has not been resolved. 3 weeks of downtime on internet access is simply unacceptable in this day and age.

I intend to also go beyond that, but I'm not telling

@oto & brym: Thanks, I am much better now.

Posted by otokx
@Brix, GSM coys are kings and their word is power. Its like the licence fees also included the souls of their clients within the geographical entity known as nigeria. How can u fanthom the indiscriminate deductions of credit from some subscribers on the globalcom network without any corresponding service. Or is it the addition of credit without validity period to others. It can be really bad some days. And trust the average nigerian with his religious smoke screen suffering and smiling.

Posted by OluYom
@oto: Well, Glo is about to see how powerful one subscriber can be if he chooses to fight back. They've got it coming!

Posted by brix25
Otox: Don't think your networks have invested enough money in CRM...if their system was good credit would not be deducted without your knowledge.

Posted by Demmy
Wishing AYA quick ""recover""

Posted by seunosewa
AYA, so what are you going to do to Glo? Are you going to stop using them and move to MTEL?

You think you have sent a strong message to Glo, but it's possible that all you've done is spoil the day for one unfortunate customer service officer. That's the way 'faceless corporations' work!

Posted by OluYom
@seun: I reviewed my plans yester-night. Dumping them would really spoil the show. Oh no, I'll keep the line and run a jolly good show. I'm not telling beyond that, but expect me to let you know soon that Mike Adenuga got in touch with me!! And I'm not kidding about that.

Don't worry; i wasn't rude to the customer care guys. Just expressed my grievances - which is part of what they are there for anyway.

Posted by seunosewa
We can organize and have 10 people calling them at 8am every morning and 5 minutes before their closing time to complain about the same issue:P

Imagine that. 8am every day, "My name is Yomi Adegboye and I want to complain that GPRS is not available in my area ..." "My name is Yomi ...."

Posted by 2tek
i aint having problems with my gprs, but i'm havin poblems with the mms, they say its free but i havent been able to put one through since. i've got credit, validity, configuration etc.

chelski rules

Posted by OluYom
@2tek: Welcome to Glo GPRS world of unreliability. Most people on Glo I know have not been able to send a single MMS in the last 4 weeks - even where there is GPRS coverage.

Posted by seunosewa
Funny, I've never had any serious problems with Internet over CDMA. Maybe that's what we should be using for serious work? Smartphones with Internet connectivity through CDMA?

Posted by brix25
@seunosewa: What you need is EDGE/3G... Maybe theaforementioned will be superceded by WiMax... I know you're asking yourself: When are we getting these technologies? Everything rests on the shoulders of the politicians, faster communications will make Nigeria more productive and this should be the main motivation, not greed for licence fees.

Posted by OluYom
@seun: Well, I have had plenty of problems with CDMA and also know a couple of others who have. I have since ditched my Multi-links line. It stopped transferring data - and Multilinks kept billing me. Call after call, and all I got was "Our engineers/technicians have been notified and will come over". The last time I checked, they never showed up. The box is gathering dust in a corner in my office now.

I know people with problems on MTS 1st Wireless, XPT and Reltel.

@brix: I think its basically an issue with its roots in service delivery, not really platform-dependent. In other words, even if we get 3G or WiMAX or whatever, we will continue to experience these problems - unless and except we overhaul our entire service culture and make sure that we deliver on promises regardless of what.

Posted by brix25
@AYA: Can't these service providers be held to account?

I am sure that they can. Unfortunately, the average Nigerian is not bothered to "rock the boat". That may include me seeing I didn't take up Multi-links. But then, I am presently taking on Globacom. I intend to trigger off a consumer revolution of some sort, so wish me luck!

Posted by seunosewa
About the issue of reliability Globacom GPRS connectivity:

"... but I have never experienced GPRS faliure in my end (V/I & Ikoyi). Its beautiful using it here because you ask for the network and it anwers you immidiately, thanks to Glo." (Mario)

Posted by mamba
A lot of people seem to be satisfied with glo GPRS all over Nigeria, though the service is OK at my end apart from one time it stopped working, which AYA is aware of.
I'm begining to think, why is it only AYA now??

Anyway sha, I'm prepared to join the battle

AYA & MAMBA VS ADENUGA

Posted by OluYom
Reliability has nothing to do with a service being available at one or a few locations. Its about it being available everywhere it should be available and at all times.

You should take a trip through Ebute-Metta, Surulere, Ikorodu Road, areas of Ikeja, Ojodu, Magodo, to see how reliable Glo GPRS is.

I was at my parents place one weekend and it worked fine. The next weekend its not working there. Another day, it works in the afternoon. I try connecting later that night and its not working. Same location.

That is not reliability. That is hopeless unpredictability.

You are correct about a lot being satisfied. But what you are missing is the silent majority that are not.

Everyone living in the areas I have listed above are NOT satisfied. Its not just me.

The list includes: Brym, Deeone, Tilly, Akan, and others I don't care to mention here. Most have given up, so they don't even bother anymore.

I am happy for those who are enjoying good service at their locations, but Glo should stop advertising "anywhere, anytime" online access when it is clearly not true on ground.

Reliability means it should be there and functional when and wherever I need it.QED

Well said. The advantage of GSM/GPRS is supposed to be the mobility, but in a world where the GPRS providers are not able to provide this "everywhere connectivity" it loses it's meaning. In such a world, Fixed Wireless makes more sense.

AYA, about your problems with Multilinks, we have a similar problem with Starcomms in our house. Once you know which PTO works in your primary place of business, it will work consistently as long as you work from that one location. The technology the PTOs use is not called Fixed Wireless for nothing
