hey guys i'm going back to school on tuesday so i might not be able to post regularly for a while. bye
Posted by OluYom
@motla: Eya! BTW, which institution are you studying at?
Posted by motla
i'm in covenant uni
Posted by OluYom
@motla: Good place to study. Are there no internet access points there? I understand that there are quite a few restrictions on students.
Posted by otokx
study hard moto, mtel has been showing limited service in uniport since yesterday so am going to get a glo 805 tomorrow. a recent report released by NCC on tuesday guardian reveals that vmobile is the worst gsm provider in nigeria.
Posted by OluYom
Personally, Glo & MTN give the best value for money.
The NCC Report simply confirms that.
Posted by motla
@aya there are internet service points but it's quite shaky for now and i promise to post any time i get the chance. infact there are a lot of restrictions on students eg we are not allowed to use phones(the greatest one) but other rules there are quite okay 4 me. bye guys

I'll take that news with a pinch of salt...everyone has been speculating about VMobile and it's future ownership...Vodacom would like to buy but many issues needs to be cleared up first.
BTW the biggest communications deal was clinched yesterday when Celltel was bought for over $3 billion buy Mobile Telecom Company from Kuwait..speculation is that MTN might be the next takeover target for European and Middle Eastern operators wanting to set up shop in the burgeoning African telecoms market.

Posted by ihejirika
@egunje, welcome. @Aya,I think tht Glo is scared of "yet 2 b born" Vmobile/Mtel mms & gprs.D awoof is a business strategy. Consumers r d winners 4 it.U r right about one of my likes anyway.

Welcome back Ihe, i hope its not the free stuff that made you come back.

@AYA
how do i activate wap browsing on my t630, i will attempt the mms stuff today. i love this forum
Posted by egunjespoilagos
thanks guys. I use my glo as an alternate. but the browsing experince is poor. maybe it just me though.
does anyone know about these two sims in one thingys. I want to get one so i won't have to keep switching sims.
The people peddling the thing say that the "automatic" one which switches network every 2-7 minutes will not work on the p910 and that one has to use the older " switch off, switch on" sim adapter.
Does anyone have any experince with this?
Mamba: is that w203 blackmamba?

I been checking old post and this forum is ok naa.
Anyone know if glo mms actually works
Posted by OluYom
@otokx: You can find the Glo WAP settings at http://gosmartmobile.com/glodatasettings.shtml
May be tricky setting up a T630, unless you know exactly what to do. Your best bet may be to take the set to a GloWorld near you.
@egunje: Glo MMS works just fine.

I gess Glo's just trying 2 make ppl remember there's still sth like mms cos they spoilt the show by charging 60 bucks pewrr mms as ppl were more interested in the wap service QED
Posted by OluYom
N60 per MMS was a terrible mistake on Glo's part. I envisage a downward review after this bonanza.
Posted by 2tek
I agree wit that. 60 bucks was just too much. I gess everybody has to blend wit the free mms again.
Does anybody know how to configure a Nec 3g phone for mms. Please post it.

Same way you configure 2.5G phones. Very little difference. Glo settings are here: http://gosmartmobile.com/glodatasettings.shtml

This place has the order of a graveyard!
Anyone with news on Mtel and Vmobile GPRS?
Posted by otokx
mtel should concentrate on providing basic gsm services like making and receiving of calls. from the pronouncements of the CEO momife it appears their GPRS will be on ground by next year.
Posted by otokx
@AYA pls send me some MMS (since i hear its free) 08057206569, i installed the settings sent to me by Glo today and i wonder if i can begin to enjoy the mms
Posted by brix25
What's the big deal with free MMS? Most networks won't allow you to send more than 100kb.
Posted by OluYom
@oto: Nope. Mtel says it will launch GPRS this month. Unfortunately, I cannot send any MMS at the moment, as its not functioning at my location: "MMS server not responding" is what I get. @brix: Depends. General opinion is that the regular MMS tariff is expensive, so an opportunity to use it for free would be exciting to most subscribers, I guess.
Posted by brix25
@AYA: I can't recall the last time I actually sent someone an MMS...It's pretty cheap down here but most people would still prefer sending an sms.
Posted by OluYom
@brix: I agree. I hardly ever use it. My opinion till date is that its a "vanity feature". Very little real use. I predicted long ago that MMS use will be insignificant; I was right. Even now that MMS is free, people hardly use it still.
Posted by brix25
Some cheerleader for Vodacom on the SA thread boasts that GPRS speeds on our biggest network have improved as of Sunday... I'm yet to see my T68i react favourably to this supposed boost in speed.
Posted by coolapostle
@Egunje welcome to Proudly Nigerian. @Ihe Abeg no more story. Just keep posting. @All I just bought a Sendo M550 at the Abuja GSM Village for my Cousin. Cost 12.5k. @Brix Glad to see you around. I would love to post more in the SA thread but honestly I don't understand what U Guys talk about there. Very advanced stuff.
Posted by brix25
@coolapostle: LOL We're just having a debate about the merits of forking out a fortune for a technology(3G) that hasn't been proved...In the same breath it should be said that I would get myself a 3G phone if the service was reliable and the handsets were affordble.
Posted by otokx
@AYA according to mr momife mtel will launch their GPRS next week, i went to glo center to get my handset configured and they told me that it will take a whole week b4 i start browsing with it. even here in uniport the GPRS is very epileptic (right now its not working) guess i have to fall back on my Mtel that i deactivated last week.
Posted by OluYom
@otokx: No sentiments about it. Simply re-activate your Mtel line if it gets the job done :-) @brix: I have enjoyed your 3G debate quite some. I very much doubt how successful 3G will be under the present circumstances in most of Africa. Maybe in another couple of years, it'll be a real spinner.
Posted by mamba
AYA i can see you're back to p800. What happened to ur dreams about 9500? Ok, guys interested in mms should PM their numbers to me. I got loads of ringtones and stuffs to distribute:-D. It's time to start taking advantage of glo free mms

you really think a 34 billion rand company will spend so much money on something that wasnt thoroughly tested... u think MTN are breaking budget to get a 3G network????
and if you cant afford it then its not targeted to you and u gota live without it..... sorry for you!!!
Posted by otokx
no network in nigeria boasts of 3G yet there are 3G handsets which are not expensive in the market. i saw a NEC 3G yesterday, such a long ugly piece of grey material. MTN is 2G here and they are very silent on the capabilities of 2.5G.
Posted by Angelgirl
@Oto , i had the same experience when i visited gloworld in VI, yesterday, they checked the settings i configured from AYA's site, and said it was correct, but my sim has not been provisioned yet , i should write down my phone number, model/make, and expect my activation in three days time, i just hope this time it works!
Posted by egunjespoilagos
Don't mind glo people, I had my p910 configed but the browsing experince is slow and patchy at best. The chap that actually configed my phone told me no to bother with features like gprs and that their "magic something" till in his words " they get their act together" I am a vmobile man myself and only got the glo for browsing and other value added features.
I have since stopped putting money on the glo line. Wonderful that it is throw away cheap now.
I am nevertheless considering getting glo's premium line its seem good value right now. If I do won't be throwing that away
