Yesterday I read a report about Nitel and the problems it was having both financially and also with connecting Nigerians to their fixed line network. Question is will fixed line ever be viable, especially li urban centres or is the company doomed to fail?

The NITEL issue (like NEPA's) is a complex one. Years of neglect have eaten deep into their infrastructure such that it is likely to take ages and loads of funds for them to be able to offer any service that measures up. I can imagine that the more they pump in funds now, the more they realise how bad things are.
There is yet hope for NITEL, but the managers literally have to become miracle workers for anything good to come out of that leviathan. Same goes for our national electricity corporation NEPA.

What's happened to all the Nigerians?
Posted by OluYom
@brix25: I guess we are on extended holidays
@all Nigerians: Anyone here aware of the e-NNOVATE 2005 expo that was supposed to hold yesterday & the day before? Been postponed to March 22nd & 23rd. All mobile enthusiasts should plan to be there.
Posted by coolapostle
On NITEL, readers of my e-zine will know that I predicted the sack of Pentascope International since mid-2004. The problem is the meddlesome attitude of the Government. Every Minister of Communications sees NITEL/MTEL as their private company. There is no hope for that company until it is sold to a private company and all those NITEL managers retired. @Ihe... send me your GSM number and I will contribute my own tsunami recharge card donation. My current number is 0802-523-7595 (I have been a bored Vmobile subscriber for two weeks now.)

@coola: What's boring about being on Vmobile? And what happened to your Glo line?
Posted by brix25
@coolapostle:One of these days Vmobile might not be so boring when either Virgin or Vodacom get their hands on it.
Posted by OluYom
@brix25: I am not quite enthusiastic about Vodacom showing up here again. Virgin would be more welcome. My sentiments, and I believe a significant number of Nigerians agree.
Posted by brix25
@AYA: When I first got a cellphone I was on MTN and never cared for Vodacom but since joining the network I haven't had much to complain about. Their customer service is excellent and their coverage is broad. Virgin on the other hand don't have experience of running a nuts and bolts network...what they do is lease space from an existing network and just brand their products- they'll soon start operating in SA through a deal with Cell C.
Posted by OluYom
@brix: In truth, I have no experience with Voda, as I suspect most Nigerians don't too. Its just Voda's attitude towards Naija in the past. They have acted more like hawks looking for a kill than people with any real interests in our country. My opinion.
Posted by brix25
@AYA...the likes of Voda and MTN exploit for capital gain that's the nature of their existence but governments should put strict rules in place for them to keep their lucrative licences.
Posted by coolapostle
I am "bored" because there is really nothing to do. U can only call. No info service or SMS-based news update. At least with MTN and Glo, I had the info services and downloads. With Glo I had WAP!!! Vmobile is Boring. But it gave me an idea for a new e-book that will help new subscribers. Maybe @Brix can give me ideas of cool Value-added Services that are popular in SA? We can approach Vmobile and become millionaires eh?
Posted by OluYom
@coola: you can also browse WAP on Vmobile using same settings on MTN. They also have downloads now as well. Not as boring as it used to be
Posted by Areafada
What does Mtn want with another licence? Well i've gotten the Nokia 9500 and it's D BOMB this fone can do almost anything a laptop can or even better since u can make Gsm calls! on ur Laptop sorry Nokia 9500, i know why chaps on SE dey beef Nokia users.
