SONY Mobile Phone Appreciation Thread

Since we already have a thread dedicated to Ericsson mobiles I thought it was about time we had a thread where Sony fans could discuss Sony mobile phones.
I'll start things off with a wee poll:

What was the best Sony mobile phone and why do you think so?

my favourite was the J5

It was rather slim much more technologically advanced than all the 3310's that were out at the same time.
4 colour grey-scale screen, great T9, jogdial, sandart and monkey games (both with great music)

Saying that, i never owned one

Posted by BOSSHOGG
Z5 for the same reasons. It's just so small, am feels nice, that 3d jog dial works a treat. And it does have a decent resolution for monochrome.

Posted by PeterKay
Sony Z5 was my 1st mobile phone.

That phone inspired me to stay with Sony 4 ever.................

Posted by masseur
the only Sony phone I had was the Z5 and MZ5 but didn't keep them long because they didn't even have the basic IR port that the other phones I was using at that time had and I have always done alot of data from psion, palm and ipaq and also from pc so it was quite a limitation.

The interface was nice and the memory stick and music ability of the MZ5 was pretty cool for its day

As a fan of most Sony products I for one am glad Sony teamed up with Ericsson to produce what we are seeing today!

Posted by scotsboyuk
My own personal favourite was the Z7; in a world of dull green monochromatic screens, we suddenly had an orange backlight!

Posted by mixin
My sister had the Z7. I'm still not too sure wheter i like it or not

Posted by scotsboyuk
I liked the Z5, but the protruding aeriel ruined it for me, when the Z7 came along I just had to have it.
I once met a lady who had painted her Z5 gold; this sounds tackier than it was, it actually cut a very fine dash in my opinion.

Posted by mwarner
The J5 was one of my first phones too, and was fantastic for it's day. In fact the scroll wheel was sorely missed when I upgraded to a T610, as was the fact that I couldn't tell at a glance when I had a new text message!

Posted by masseur
I got a bit nostalgic a couple of months ago and bought a good Z5 off ebay. I also bought a Z7 for comparison but still preferred the Z5 although, yes, the aerial was something not to like. didn't like the Z7 orange screen at all and I didn't really like the jog dial being moved down to the middle from the top, although we all have that now of course with the P series.

I realised my stupidity and that I would never use those phones again so I resold them on ebay shortly after

you can still buy gold coloured Z5 and Z7 housings on ebay btw

Posted by mixin
I was looking at the J5 on ebay the other day, but was about £40, which is a tad too much for a old phone me thinks

i din't have a sony mobile phone before but my teacher have a z5 and the phone looks really cool and i really like it,besides that, there is also a sony model i like it very much but i had forgot the name(it have a stick beside the phone and when u want to answer a call,u need to pull down the stick) ...one of the reason why i buy se phone is because of sony..i'm a sony fans my house's tv,hifi and dvd player are sony

Posted by switchbitch
I had a Z7 for a week; i took it back and replaced it with a p800 as it just came out. It had some interesting ringtones.....

Posted by peeta
i had the j6 and it was very good, amazingly slim and light. one of the first to have polyphonic ringtones. perfection in design!

Was the Z5 the first mobile to have that particular form factor?

Posted by Quoth
I had a Z5 as well, a fantastic little phone, great build quility and looked superb. Bought it as soon as it was available in the UK and used it until I bought my K700.
For it's day the features were pretty impressive, the ability to record a memo to the phone and use it to play a specific message to specific callers was a fun and useful little feature. And as said above, the 3D jog dial was very good.

IMO it somehow had a much better quality feel to it than the Z7.

It was a bit strange using the Jog-Dial at first, but it is surprising how quickly one becomes adept at using it in place of more conventional menu keys. I am rather pleased that SE have retained this feature in the Pxxx series, I sometimes wish they would implement it in some of their other mobiles.

Posted by scotsboyuk
What was the maximum size of memory stick that the MZ5 could support?

Posted by peeta
sony design is still coming through even now

I always preferred Sony designs to those of Ericsson; they seemed more elegant and futuristic to me.

Posted by Vlammetje
Peeta I'm afraid i do not really see the similarities.

My first mobile was a Sony too and it servd me loyally for about a year. I have missed the convenience of the scroll wheel on every phone I've had since... I think that was one of Sony's best assets

Posted by scotsboyuk
@Vlamm

I agree, as I said earlier it's a shame that the Jog-Dial hasn't been included in more SE mobiles. I'd agree about it being one of the best things about Sony mobile phones.

Posted by scotsboyuk
Following on from what Peeta said earlier, which SE phone demonstrates the most 'Sonyness', to coin a phrase?

Posted by Vlammetje
well the P models have my scroll wheel
they deffo score on the list of 'phones with obvious sony influences'

Posted by methylated_spirit
Z7 all the way, for me its still the best looking phone ever made.
Utterly fantastic.

Posted by Krubach
Ok. I guess we covered pretty much all Sony models J5, J6, Z5 and Z7...

Posted by BobaFett
@scotty nice thread, wish u and all your guests here all the best. Have fun with it! Reg. Ps: the only thing i remember of a sony fony, that j6 or 7 had only 3 options: silent, tone or vibra, no tone or vibra at the same time, cos the vibra function was made with the earpiece by 'vibrating', no 'real vibra motor' was in the fone.

Posted by Asterix
Sony phones never showed over here, but I really wanted a Z5, it looked so cool. I also heard that it was a great phone, good thread, have fun.

that sony of mine had a huge scala of ringtones, that I remember. And different from the standard nokia tones. One of the few times I actually always knew when it was my phone that was ringing

Posted by scotsboyuk
@Asterix

It's a shame you never got the chance to buy a Z7, I agree with you regarding its looks. I remember seeing it for the first time in a magazine and I just knew that I had to have it, I think that that is perhaps its best feature, it just looked fantastic.

Posted by apotts
@scotsboyuk,

I don't think the Z5 was the first in this form factor. Z5 was in 2000 or so, I had a Motorola 601 in about 1997 I think...

Posted by scotsboyuk
@apotts

That isn't a bad looking mobile for the time, but it has the same flaw, in my opinion, that put me off the Z5, an ariel. I much preferred the Z7 over the Z5.

Posted by DanEdin
Just dug out my Sony J6 on Vodafone still in perfect condition (bought it when VF stores were selling them refurbished last year on PAYT).

I had a J5 and I loved the keys on that, they made a cool noise when you were texting.

I had the Z7 as well and I liked the new style of Jog-Dial(TM) but prefer the J5.

None of the Sony Ericsson phones owe very much to the Sony phone design but the keylock switch on the SE S700i is very Sonyish and the earphones plug on the Pxxx is exactly the same as J5/J6 one.

Of course from the other side the S700i is Sonyish because it resembles a Sony CyberShot.

Posted by csi_bha
I had a sony cmd-j70 was a good fone, but the early poly tones sounded like an ice-cream van too much.

But it was easy to use

Posted by methylated_spirit
For the record, my fave was z-7, and also for the record, i just farted.

Posted by bletch
for me the best phone was the J70. When you use it you can see the influances for the P series OS.

Posted by batesie
masseur, yes i liked the MZ5...

ms slot!

it wasn't an MS duo slot as I recall. It was a full size memory stick. This was around 1999 and I'm pretty sure duo wasn't around in those days

Posted by batesie
sorry masseur slip of the tongue!
so used to saying duo, thats all i use these days!

Posted by scotsboyuk
The MZ5 was actually very advanced for its time in my opinion. The price was astronomical though, when compared with other mobiles of the time.

This brought back so much memories!

My first ever GSM mobile is a CMD-Z5, it took me a long time to decide to get a mobile, but one look at that beautiful and functional design mad me bite the bullet.

Granted it's got it's share of problems (ultra low speaker volumn), but in a world of boring or ugly candybar from Nokia, the Z5 is such a fresh idea.

And it's got the coolness factor nothing then can match, when you whip out a Z5, and flip open the flap, I'm sure it's got a few curious glances from people nearby wondering you have a latest gadget from japan (which it was LOL).

My Z5 retired after I got a T68, and spend rest of it's days serving my Dad, but it got stolen from Heathrow airport I still miss it sometimes when I saw it's packaging box.

What a good thread.

It was only last night I was browsing the SE Global site to look at all the older handsets.

My first Sony was the J70e in silver. The vibratone never used to be felt unless it was strapped to your leg but all in all I enjoyed its short time with me (it got lost).

My mate Trevor had a Z7 which was very cool at the time and I was green with envy.

The P9** jog-dial and flip are definitely reminiscent of the earlier Sony's.

On the later SE smaller models this has been replaced with the up/down side buttons which you can still use to navigate the secondary/tertiary menu's, not necessary really but another navigational option.

I wouldn't say there is too much of either Sony or Ericsson in the later models apart from the more expensive S700i which I think smacks very much of Sony Savvy Super-gadget.

The only Sony I ever concidered to buy was the Z1. It was a really small nifty phone.

Posted by scotsboyuk
@tranquil

That's a dashed smart! When was that released?

Posted by masseur
I think it was around a year before the Z5

there was also the Z1 plus which, if I remember correctly, had more phone memory

Posted by OluYom
I got my 1st Sony phone - guess - YESTERDAY! Ha! Better late than never; innit?

I needed a phone for calls & CSD data on my MTN-NG line and wanted something cheap. The J5 qualified so I picked one. Great features for a phone that old.

Love the WAP/Web dual browser. Email works fine. I love the jog dial, and d phone holds a signal pretty well. At least I can brag that I used a Sony

Posted by axxxr
I would have to say that this would have to be my all time favourite Sony handset...Design was so Small and revolutionary for its time wayyy back....Brings back some good memories.

@axxxr. What in d world is that? Looks more like a 2-way radio than a GSM/CDMA phone. :>

Hi!

The Jxx series is far the best!
It has the BIGGEST hacking by far...

Believe me, i had J70 for 4 years, and we could do almost everything with it.
I`ve closed my site, cause i changed it to a T630, but have a look at: http://pappfer.uw.hu (to the Programok menu).
ADesk program is the best by far..
(Here you can find the newest versions: http://nimar.inj.ru/adesk.php )

Posted by pappfer
Sorry, http://pappfer.fw.hu (the uw.hu one is my SE site - both Hungarian)

BTW if you wanna start hacking, syllas.com forum is the best.
And a lot of progs at http://www.r00t.cz
