This thread is to discuss the general topic of changing usernames.
To discuss your personal username, please continue in the following thread. The Changing Usernames Advice Thread
Do we think people should be allowed to change there usernames for the sake of it? As Vlamm stated here
I would have to agree, even though i did it but we shouldnt do it for no reason.

it is a bit confusing when people with high post counts change there name, as it appears that there is a new member but they already have 500+ posts.
Posted by scotsboyuk
@Lynx
I don' see why you changed it in the first place.
Posted by BobaFett
Of course it must be allowed, why not? if ppl recognize u, it depends on u. Until now i didnt know u done the change.
Posted by Vlammetje
well to start with question 2: i vote yes... but since you have posted so much now as trigga perhaps others might get confused.
question 1: I really really do not see the 'fun' in changing usernames. Now for example orangeman/wapchimp I can understand... he named himself after his site (or wap site)
This I can somehow remember (or at least try to) and serves some purpose I guess.
I will still be caling him orangeman for years to come but that's because i am used to calling him that.
But leksandfan/leks, lynx/trigga jojo/jn to name a few recent ones..... I'm afraid there is no real way for me to remember who is who. Suppose all 44000 members would go change their username tomorrow. Wouldn't we all be very very very lost?
And if you get to change your name for no reason but being 'bored with the old one'... then what is to say you won't get bored with the new one at some stage? And change again? And again?
Now change all you like but don't start giving a hard time to those who simply cannot be bothered to remember it all.
this is a HUGE forum. You cannot expect everybody to know who you are. Especially not if you change your name. You're lucky i recognized your sig coz otherwise i would have never known.
Perhaps people should be given a new account with 0 posts for each new name... and have the old one deleted
I think that might make it a LOT less popular to change it

I just thought this name was better.
No real reason though. Thats why im thinking of going back to Lynx69 so people recognise me and asking people of they think its better that people can only change username if they have a satusfactory reason.
[EDIT] I completely agree with Vlamm

or make it neccessary to put in your sig, Trigga69 formally know as lynx for a set period of time, this is what orangeman did i think.

I am sure laffen will deeply appreciate the extra work!
Posted by Lynx69
I forgot about that, its not hard (well not on my forum)
Posted by BobaFett
Names doesnt count so much, more the effective presence and good behavour on esato. But to be respected and to be welcome for older and newer members u have to keep to your chosen name, just as in real life. My 2 sentences, and the truth is maybe somewhere between them, are total different points, but i can and have to accept both, for an objective result.
Posted by Vlammetje
i think on an internet forum... where we effectively all look like a piece of text on a white background, with phone to our left... names are just about everything
Posted by *Jojo*
Vlammetje - I guess each member will be given at least 'one-time-change-username' oppurtunity here at esato! In my case, I originally intended to have the 'Jojo' username as it is my real 'cutie' name
Yup! Maybe just a one-time change will do, though the member will try to make up his/her mind on the 2nd one as it would just be his/her last . . .
I see some having changed theirs for quite a number of times already, perhaps 3 or 4
Posted by Vlammetje
i see no reason why everybody should be given a 'one time change your username' included in their membership. Seems a bit overdone to me.
Posted by Ayush
I'd changed once but had notified the change in the sign for an extended period
Posted by *Jojo*
@ayush - Some kind of an 'early-warning-advise' mate !
Posted by Ayush
???
Posted by whizkidd
So what was your nick earlier Ayush?
Posted by masseur
I have an opinion on this.
first, there are many members form whom this is perhaps the first forum they have signed up to and they had to think of an online name quickly and perhaps, later, regretted their choice preferring instead another name
second, we all change over time and I have friends, for example one called Johnny, who recently decided that was what he wanted to be called when he was younger but now prefers John.
members who are not well known and who change their username won't be missed so much from their old username whereas members who have alot of posts and are regular posters and therefore more well known tend to advertise their name change (orangeman, jazzy, jojo, etc to name a few) and so those who are likely to be confused by the change in name are not because of this advertisement of the name change
personally I see no problem with changing names though I suspect most people would only change once anyway and would have thought more about it second time around

As per @masseur's:

I guess a one-time change is only allowed! That's why member's should think a million times before sending @laffen that precious pm . . . By the time @laffen acts on it, the changer (member) must just have forgotten 'bout his request after all
Posted by Ayush
In my case it happened quickly enough! @whiz it was sony_eric :-)
Posted by Asterix
@masseur, I agree, one time change is ok, but shouldn't it be posted so everyone knows who is posting under that new nick?
Posted by Lynx69

Yea, i did that and i also remember orangeman/wapchimp also starting a thread.
Everyone that changes their nick should post it because you might not realise who a certain poster is...for example i worked out that JN was JoJo because of the 'From' part in his profile but i didnt know until then and didnt know who JN was.

So ppl,I dont know now,is it possible to change some1 nickname on the forum.
Posted by Lynx69
Only Laffen can change nicknames. You PM him and ask him to do it.

ppl i need help. sum of u may know me as p900 lover, which i did cos i fell i love with the p900 wen i saw it.
but i think as i want to stay on this forum 4 a long time it may get out dated,
p900 lover was whot 1st came 2 my mind and i wud like to change it.
put to whot, i mean sumthing that dusnt have anything to do with the curent fone,
any ideas????
Posted by scotsboyuk
@p900 lover
Why change you name when the one you have is perfectly fine? Your name denotes your appreciation for a great phone, which in time is sure to be recognised as one of the classic smartphones. I say keep your current name and be proud of it.

@trigga69 - Same here dude! I only realize that you were the @lynx69 back then after a couple of days after your username was changed . . . What so special about the '69' pal. . . Hmmm. . . I know what it just means when talking dirty here (tehehehe)!

@scotsboyuk - I guess a one-time-change will just do . . . . . We do have some lapses in memory and in decision at times dude !
Posted by plasmadog
hey stupid question,
if the username is changed... do we have to login with the new username ? and does the password remain the same too?
Posted by 50Cent
i just changed mine. u login using the new username, and the password remain the same
Posted by Lynx69

Yeah you login with new username and the password stays the same.
Go to 'edit preferences' and 'store username and password in a cookie for 1 year' because laffen will send you a pm when hes changed it and if you stayed logged on then you will know straight aay that its been changed and if you dont then when you try to login with old username it wont work then you will no its chaged...up to you

People like me are unique, we have a special feature, its called TrigLynx.
With the help of my doctor, Dr Meths, we have compiled a diagnostic for TrigLynx:
Triglynx (triggusidiotiasmaximuslynxius) is a newly discovered condition, although its suspected that it has been around for a long time in some form or other. It occurs mostly amongst internet chatroom and discussion forum users, although cases have been reported amongst diminutive Eightie's pop singers. What exactly triggers it, no one knows, but it is believed to be linked to Halliwell Syndrome, a terrible debilitating disease, sufferers of which has an insane, uncontrollable urge to want to fit in and be popular. Invariably they fail, and die a horrible, friendless death.
Symptoms include manic depressiveness, a lapse in sexual activity, and eating gross amounts of fatty foods. Also, sufferers have been know to repeat a strange phrase over and over, almost a chant. It goes something like this:
"whyhasntlaffenpmdme whyhasntlaffenpmdme
whyhasntlaffenpmdme" and so on, until the sufferer falls into a deep sleep, and eventually dies.
There is no cure, as of yet. Unfortunately, many people do succumb to this horrible condition, a minor reprieve can be give, which is changing their username, but it only lasts for around 3 months, before the symptoms begin again, and the chanting can be heard.
We are working on the cure and are very close to cracking this mystery, as soon as we have we will anounce it.

50Cent is an ideal case to study.
He has the main symtoms of TrigLynx has he is wanted to change his username for his 3rd time.
Posted by 50Cent
3rd and FINAL i might add.

Yes, his case is verging on terminal...i believe we need to find a cure, as soon as possible. I've found a snippet in an old college medical dictionary that may prove helpful:
"One solution is to act utterly confused about who's posting what, once they have changed their name"
Interesting...if we act like its going to cause massive confusion, maybe the patient will decide against the name change!
