Old mobile phones are to be recycled into personal alarms for women who suffer violence from their partners, reports the BBC
The scheme, piloted in south London, is to be rolled out to Birmingham, Glasgow, Bristol, Norwich and the rest of London over the next six months.
People will be asked to hand in their old phones to Body Shops in the cities. They can be converted to allow a direct 999 call at the push of any button, or recycled to raise money for the "Donate a Phone, Save a Life" scheme.
The phones will be given to women thought to be at risk of attack.

Wouldn't it be better for the women to leave their partners?

It aint that easy a lot of the time, absinthebri.

Have you ever tried finding your mobile and dialling 112 whilst being attacked, meth? That's not easy, either.

Eh? Explain to me again why you think it appropriate that a charity helps abused women stay in a relationship with their abuser.

what happens when the phone is in a handbag and rings 999 every 2 minutes?

If people COULD leave an abusive relationship, they most certainly would. Do you think people seriously hang around because they want to? It may not be "just" a case of being slapped around, you dont know the real ins and outs of it, so you shouldnt make snap judgements like that.
