I would like to have the following terms defined; 'newbie' and 'veteran'. Both of these terms are used a great deal on Esato and there has been discussion on what they mean in the past, but there seems to be differing views on actual definitions (if any exist).
Before anyone gets on their high horse about this, I am just asking out of curiosity.

Newbie new person. Veteran one who has been around for long.

Veteran reminds on a ww II soldier in a wheelchair. What about sony for newcomer and eric for the older members? I am not kidding.

I know that these are not the answers you are probably looking for as a person of your caliber already Knows The Answers but i had 5 minutes to kill

Newbie

Perhaps I could use myself as an example here of what Scotsboy is saying. I have only been on Esato since April of this year (2004), so just about 5 months, which kind of makes me a newbie, but.... I have over 500 posts!

Does that make me a newbie or a veteran then?

I wish you were If we were going down that road I would prefer 'Sony' as the term for the older members.

@all

When does a newbie stop being a newbie? What makes a veteran a veteran, the number of posts made or the length of time spent as a member? Is there a term for members not part of either of these two groups?

I guess this question is like asking when does young stop being young and become old?

I might be 42 but I still feel young, however to my 12 and 14 year old kids I am old!

clearly its not a question that can be answered with any specific and definitive answer as it depends on the individual perspective of the each person

I can only see that a thread like this only raises a divisive issue and am not sure its in the best interests of Esato, but lets see how it goes for a while

@scotsboyuk i think its a new endless discussion, reminds me to the post counter thread.

A person may be new to Esato, and only have a couple of posts, but they may have a lot of knowledge about phones, so how would you class them? I personally am against calling people "noobs", to my mind its a slightly degrading thing.

i guess mods are veterans,
rest of us newbies!

@plasmadog

I'm not sure if I would agree with your analysis.

@masseur

I don't see as being that divisive an issue; I think it quite relevant t Esato since these terms are used on a regular basis. I'm not too happy with the terms myself because I think they are somewhat misleading in that someone who has only been a member for a few days and has made only a few posts, but has a vast knowledge of mobile phones and technology in general is accorded less respect and/or status than a member who has been a member for years and has made numerous posts, most of which have been tosh.
To my mind a newbie is a new member who has just joined Esato irrespective of the number of posts they have made and a veteran is someone who has been an active member for more than a year (conviently making me one ). In general I don't see a need for any of these terms and I would prefer that they didn't exist since they imply that some members have greater status than others, when in fact it is only the moderators who have any form of status.
The whole issue comes back to the post count; quite a number of people seem to put a lot of stock in the post as a measure of how important a member is, for some reason. I have been in favour of scrapping the post count for a while, perhaps if we did it would end a lot of this nonsense about status. I have noticed that some other forums give members 'titles', some quite amusing, based upon the number of posts they have made, perhaps this would be a better indicator of a member's post count that would also allow a little fun at the same time.

Well...
I still feel like newbie sometimes. I mean; Esato still teaches me new things.
(It hasn't been that educating lately though...)

@tranquil

Do you have standardised posts? I have seen that post before!

Posted by BobaFett
Why do we need to discuss this post count, newcomer etc things again and again and again? Esato works great, many new visitors every day, i mean the mashine is in roll.

Posted by scotsboyuk
@boba

We don't need to discuss anything, but that is usually what happens in forums, people have discussion about things. The discussion led on to the post count so I feel that it is a valid point to discuss. Every time this issue is raised someone comes along and says that there is no point in discussing it and so the discussion is cut short before more than a few members have had a chance to have their say on it.
I am not so sure why you feel that discussion of this issue somehow impacts upon Esato in a detrimental way, after all there is nothing wrong with trying to make a good thing better. Perhaps instead of simply dismissing such discussions you could provide valid points as to why you disagree. Interesting I would like to hear from some of the newer members on this issue since most of the people who discuss these issues tend to be older members.

I guess the total # of posts made does not totally qualify with the issue at hand ! @sammy_boy is quite right back there, just like in the case of @bobafett who made a 3.8K posts/replies in just a couple of months Some have registered wayback in 2002 and have only . . . what 50 # of posts! It's quite a hard 'Q' to rebutt It's like the 'Q' of which ever comes first the chicken or the egg !

there are actually more than 2 kinds of "status" here in ESATO
1) Newbie
2) Veteran
3) and those who doesn't care whether you're either.

I think, it's participation that counts.

Posted by scotsboyuk
@GOwin

That's the most sensible comment I've heard on this subject!

Posted by rdnymllnsktr
Don't look at their post count, look at when they registered here. And when those terms are used, I consider them towards this board, not their knowledge about cell phones. If the president of SONY Ericsson joined Esato tomorrow, I'd consider him a newbie and me a veteran. Why? Because at Esato, that's what it would be. Sure he could trump me with his cell phone knowledge, but that won't change that I've been here longer than him (on Esato). There's my thoughts on the subject.
