Difference between "gprs and gsm" and "gsm only"?

What is the difference between the options under: Connect -> Data comm. -> Pref. services?

You can choose
GPRS and GSM
or
GSM only.

It doesnt seem to be any difference, I can use GPRS-data whatever i choose in this menu. Does anyone know that this option is?

It makes a gprs attach at power on if setting is \"gsm & gprs\". Otherwise it makes an attach when needed (wap is started) then it detaches from gprs again.

But why should I be attachet to GPRS all the time? Isn't it enought the t68 attaches only when I want it to (when I'm checking mail, wap and so on)? Why does this function exist?

I think GSM only option would have longer standby times, coz it doesnt use the GPRS signal until you actually use it..

Its because when you recive MMS you need to be connected to gprs otherwise you will never be able to recive it. Happy reciver of WC-MMS :-D

One of the disadvantages of using GSM Only is that whilst you are connected to GPRS (i.e. in a wap connection) you cannot receive a regular GSM phone call. So anyone trying to contact you will just end up at voicemail until you terminate your wap session. Thats a big drawback. At least with GPRS and GSM you can still receive a phone call whilst using WAP.

I don't understand I use the GPRS & GSM setting but when I power on I do not automatically get connect to GPRS I still have to connect throught the browser. I thought to that it was to allow mms and incoming calls!?

I know when you staart your phone up with the GPRS and GSP settings the blue status bar shows but this does not mean you are connected but that you have a signal.

This is what i was confused about when i got it as i didnt understand y i had to connect throught the broweser, i jusy thought it would be there....like broadband internet

Posted by evoke
Not as far as I'm aware you always have to connect through the browser. You can then leave it on 24/7 if you wish but you need to connect once from turning on. I can't make mine automatically connect after startup like bradband?? Obviousley the blue status light comes on but this does not mean you're connected just that you have a GPRS signal!

But I may be wrong?? But it's not much off an issue really, just connect once in the morning or when you turn your phone on!

How do you get it to connect automatically just by switching on? Haven't heard of that one.

yeah, but the problem with keeping it connected is battery. I dont notice much difference in speed between GSM wap and GPRS wap, do u?

Posted by evoke
Yes the GPRS speed is a lot, lot faster and connection is insant. It may drain the bettery a bit more but I have the GPRS on all day and usually tun it off at night. I charge my battery every other day (although it could go a bit longer) and I make voice calls quite a lot.

If yours is still slow I would check your connection settings with O2 (was it O2 you were with).

i have to wait about 4-5 seconds per wap page, i am woith o2, what connections could i change to speed it up?

Cheers mate

4-5 seconds is way to long! Weren't you using the GPRS settings from The SE site? I seriously would try your operator (O2 was it?) and pester them until they sort you with their own settings! They should be able to text them you - I know you have had not much look with them!

I think if you use their settings then you're problems will be sorted!

Just ask to speak to a team leader when you call - this always shits them enough to sort out your problem! I speak from experience!

How many seconds do u wait for the average site? It may be as they are sending me a new sim card....prehaps that might make a difference, as i am still using a genie one with the o2 tarrif and gprs. Ill have to see when it comes i guess. I am using the settings from se web site. Thanks for the help mate

Strange! I noticed that GSM only gave me a much faster connection. And i didnt understand the difference between them yet.

Posted by marton
I have noticed one difference. When on "GPRS and GSM" the T68 disturbs my computer loudspeakers (the radiation from the phone I think), eaven when if I dont use the phone. But there are no interference when the setting is on "GSM only".

Posted by marknicholls
Well i have noticed no difference in speed. i hope it will improve with my new sim. If it doesnt , i may got back to gsm wap, the one good thing with gprs is it can be set up to check pop3 email on a regular interval which is great. (Of course when mms is avaliable on o2.....in about 27 years no doubt, it should be good!)

Posted by evoke
The other major differnce and probably the best one is that you can leave it on all the time at no cost until you transfer data! Works out soooo much cheaper for me!

If i'm aceessing a new wap site it takes acouple of secs but if I'm moving aroung say Esato it takes no time at all!

Hope you sort it out!

Please note that you can still receive calls while using GPRS when GSM only is the preferred service and voice calls are set to automatic.

Gsm is used 4 wap connectn f ur gprs is not yet activated

Posted by evoke
Ok am confused myself now! So what really does this function do besides showing you the gprs signal bar all the time? Are there any other benefits? Possibly the mms one but i cant confirm that as mms doesn't work here. Anyone know? Ed

I would love to know! It does not even seen faster when using wap

I'll try to summarize:

1. The settings GSM & GPRS is negligble on standby time (does not do much except periodic routing area updates).
2. The phone DOES listen for paging when WAP is active unless the Connect/Data comm/data Accounts//Edit/"Allow calls" is set to GPRS Only
3. If you are not attached to GPRS at power on (black triangle), your network provider has a GPRS Network operating in NOM 3. This is most likely a configuration fault since nobody wants to operate in that mode... A SE phone is in any case a Class C mobile in such a network (since there is no paging coordination between GSM/GPRS).
This means that the phone can only be GSM Attached OR GPRS Attached - Not both at the same time). Hence the triangle only shows up when a PDP context is activated. It also means that you are IMSI detached whne the context is activated. Totally according to the spec - this is why nobody wants to operate a network in that mode (NOM III).
4. The benefit of being GSM & GPRS attached are more obvious when the network is operating in NOM 1 and a Gs interface is present since GSM paging can be sent on GPRS Signalling channels/Data channels

What is the black triangle? Do you mean the blue triangular GPRS signal indicator over the batters status indicator?

When I have GPRS & GSM on this automatically appears whenever I switch the phone on - I assumed it meant that I was receiving a GPRS signal. In GSM only the blue triangle only comes on when GPRS is activated. When I had my T68m I always had it on GSM only as I new that when the blue triangle was showing I was connected. On my T68i there is also a connection icon on the right hand side of the screen when GPRS is activated so now I have the GPRS and GSM settings on as with this connection icon I know when I'm connected.

I can recive calls when connected to GPRS.

Hmm am still confused - which setting is better then or does it not matter??

Cheers,

Ed

Forgot to mention that the GPRS icon's differs depending on the theme you have loaded....

With the default theme the icon is a filled Green/Blue when GPRS Attached.
If there is GPRS in the network but you are not allowed to attach and rejected with an erroneous reject cause the triangle is "empty"

If properly rejected by the network (no subscription/no roaming agreement for GPRS etc) the triange is invisible (as it is when in GSM Only mode).

Yeah the triangle is full and I have full access to the GPRS network.

Still though I still don't understand is the GPRS and GSM setting better? I'm assuming it must be.
