Cell will have a 64-bit IBM Power processor and eight "synergistic processing units" capable of handling separate computing tasks, said Jim Kahle, an IBM Fellow. The Power processor will act as the brain of the chip, running the main operating system for an application and divvying up chores for the other processors.
The multicore design will give software developers tremendous flexibility, Kahle said, allowing them to run multiple operating systems on the same chip and experiment with variations on grid computing.
"It's designed from the beginning to work in a world where all the computers are tied together," he said.
Future versions of Cell chips could have more or fewer processing units depending on what device and software designers require, Kahle said. "There are a number of different ways to implement parallelism on the chip," he said.
How those processing units are used is up to software developers, including the game makers who will soon start wrestling with the PlayStation 3. Kahle said IBM and its Cell partners will provide game developers and other code writers with open-source tools and guidelines for working with Cell but that game developers will have final say on how they chop up computing tasks among the processing units.
• The first version of the chip will run at speeds faster than 4GHz. Engineers were vague about how much faster, but reports from design partners say 4.6GHz is likely. By comparison, the fastest current Pentium PC processor tops out at 3.8GHz.
• Cell can process 256 billion calculations per second (256 gigaflops), falling a wee bit short of marketing hyperbole calling it a "supercomputer on a chip." The slowest machine on the current list of the Top 500 supercomputers can do 851 gigaflops.
• The chip will have 2.5MB of on-chip memory and have the ability to shuttle data to and from off-chip memory at speeds up to 100 gigabytes per second, using XDR and FlexIO interface technology licensed from Rambus.
• The chip will have 234 million transistors, measure 221mm square and be produced using advanced 90-nanometer chipmaking processes. Cell production is expected to shift to a 65-nanometer process as IBM introduces the chipmaking technology later this year.
Future Cell chips are expected to fulfill a variety of applications, from servers to cell phones, although the first generation will require a cooling fan and hence be limited to larger devices like game consoles.
Some competitors are sceptical that Cell will find much of a home outside of video games because the processing units aren't identical, claiming that this situation increases complexity and the opportunity for bugs by compromising compatability.

xbox certainly, but beating xbox next will be a much tougher job. i personally think they will be on a par, with each having different strengths and weaknesses. however if sony waits too long after the release of xbox next they will lose market share. people will only wait a certain amount of time for its release before buying what's already available.

Masseur i already have a normal PS2 i was going to get the slim version but then i heard that there's a silver slim version coming out soon so im waiting for that now!...I am also waiting for the U.K version PSP,not that keen on japanese one,just prefer my stuff u.k branded,manuals cd's ect....Will be a long while yet for the PS3 though!

Microsoft already announced earlier this week that they plan to announce their next Xbox, aka Xbox 360 or Xbox 2, also on May 16th.So why the heck is there a E3 show in the first place, if they biggest announcements for this years E3 are already happening before?
Sony will present the PS3 on a sound stage in Sony Pictures' complex in Culver City, just outside Los Angeles, at 15.00 PST on Monday, May 16th.
Microsoft will show their Xbox 360 three hours later (smart move by Sony) in downtown Los Angeles.At least both announcements are in the area of LA where the E3 is.

oh sorry,i misunderstood ur statement.
i really doubt if it can come in top 500 even,as i know the 500th position produces a peak of 1.4teraflops according to nov 2004 top 500 list,cell at peak(or in theory?) can produce a max of ~250gflops,i dont the value in real life for sure(which is likely to be much lower).
anyways,cell is a good one for a console considering its power.

PS3 Three Times Faster Than Xbox 360?
As we approach E3, the specs for both the Xbox 360 and PS3 are becoming more known among the developers, spurring some major chest thumping and “My CPU is bigger than your CPU” talk.
The consensus among these learned types is that the two systems have comparable GPUs despite using different companies (ATI and NVidia), but that the CPUs are a completely different story.
Word from the geek is that the PS3’s CPU is about three times faster than the Xbox 360’s CPU. While this seems like a clear cut victory for Sony, it does little to end the constant debate about which system will be able to provide better games. The problem with Sony’s super-fast CPU is that not all of its power may actually be usable in games. Bottom line: There could be a lot of extraneous horsepower under the PS3’s hood that’s mainly for show, not actual gaming.

Word is that Sony will unveil an actual prototype PS3 unit on their next-generation booth at E3,and that rather than just a mock up, it will be a near final design of the next generation of PlayStation.
It's been such a closely guarded secret that the appearance of PS3 has been deliberately kept off any show program sheet and will apparently be kept under strict guard by members of the LAPD.

Sony's new PlayStation 3 ad campaign has started appearing all over LA in the run up to E3. It features the signature triangle, circle, cross and square symbols split down the center, with the words Welcome Chang3 (ChangE?) at the bottom? any ideas?
