Ok I have just ordered one of these and it will be with me in a few days, will right up a review if anyone is interested....

Posted by Dragonfly_TP
what do you have to pay for this cool thingy?

Posted by Jools
Is this one of those Sony devices that doesn't play MP3 or AAC files and you have to convert all your existing music into Sony's inferior and proprietary ATRAC3 format before you can listen to it?

http://ptech.wsj.com/archive/solution-20040728.html

Posted by Dragonfly_TP
I don't want an iPod anyway, who wants to pay € 0,75 per music file... jeeez I can get legal cd's cheaper, and from the net for free (warning: downloading copyrighted music you don't own the right of is illigal)

sorry they made me type that legal s...

Posted by themarques
Nope this baby kicks a**. None of this ATRAC rubbish, you can check the specs out at this website.

http://www.dynamism.com/hmp-a1/specs.shtml

Oh by the way it was US$699 thats about £384, and thats about how much a 40Gig Ipod costs WITHOUT VIDEO or Colour Screen.

dude, it looks cool...i think id wanna get one aswell...

All I can say is that Apple has a fight on there hands this year, and if they dont bring out the video-pod soon, I am certain Sony will reign again.

Posted by Dragonfly_TP
what about this Sony media player versus the PSP?

Posted by themarques
@Dragonfly_TP Well PSP is a gaming machine, and this is just as you said a media player. So I would not VS the two, because each has its strong and weak point.

Posted by maddav
I think the comparison in size with the iPaq is interesting, though i disagree about your comparison with the iPod i think that this audio/video player, will be more in direct competition with the Archos A/V players, than the iPod, due to size, features(and price?)

btw, the new 40GB iPod is £300 ( but still no colour screen )

Posted by themarques
Actually rumour has it that the new Ipod actually might have a colour screen enabled, il post the link below makes an interesting read.

http://www.ipodlounge.com/articles_more.php?id=4603_0_8_0_M

But remember that this is now the way most players will go and I am glad that Sony is getting back in the driving seat. Apple was now taking us for a ride with these silly little Ipod udates each month (Learning from MS.... I guess.)

Posted by maddav
I read that a few days ago, but they do say,

For that matter, you can do the exact same black to blue transformation on an iPod mini’s screen. There’s little chance that either unit is capable of operating in color.

I honestly have no idea, and i think Apple fuelling speculation (as always) about the secret features ( or was it Time magazine ) is really annoying, I want my features now

To be quite honest I can't really see Sony 'de-throning' Apple in the portable music world right now.

Posted by mixin
We all know the best devices don't get the most sales

Even though the sony device does seem to be really good, it'll never out sell any ipod item.

Posted by themarques
I think what you guys are forgetting that Sony ruled the Walkman market for many years, and I still have alot of faith that they will manage to do that again.

Posted by themarques
Just found out that this player will only be available in the UK next summer. Bad move Sony.

Posted by Jools
Technically that Sony thing appears very impressive. However, for me, I just can't see why anyone would want to squint at a tiny screen for hours trying to watch a film. I much prefer to sit at home in the comfort of my sofa and watch a movie in widescreen surround sound on my TV.

It's bad enough trying to watch a film on a Virgin Atlantic airplane seat-back screen. But I do that out of necessity rather than choice on a 9 hour flight.

Music I will listen to over and over again (even in a short space of time), but even my favourite films I probably only watch a few times a year. I certainly wouldn't need to carry an inferior to DVD quality version around with me all the time.

So, for me I wouldn't use it to watch video, and as a music player its just too big!

Posted by methylated_spirit
I would buy it over an ipod any time, i hate ipods. Utter junk. My friends had 3 and they kept breaking, so when it broke a 4th time, instead of ANOTHER warranty replacement he got his money back and bought a Creative mp3 player, its much better technically than the ipod and hasnt had any problems with it.

Posted by Jools
Well, you're entitled to your opinion, but it obviously been tainted by your friends experience. They're really not 'utter junk'. He must've been very unlucky (or VERY heavy handed!).

I know 8 people with iPods of different generations and not one has ever had a single problem. My own iPod is 2 years old and still going strong, including the battery.

Posted by mixin
For what i want... i'm still thinking the iriver H340 is the best thing for the job... better than any ipod or sony thing

Posted by themarques
@JoolsG3 What you said is a double edge sword for the simple reason that I could then say well, why would I bother with 3g phones and gprs when I have 2Mbps line at home? Why would I bother with a Mp3 player when I have a Bose acoustic system in my room? and why would I bother compressing mpeg movies to fit on a p800/p900......I could go on and on

Just remember the laws of SUPPLY AND DEMAND. Sony and Apple dont make things they think people wont BUY.

At the end of day each to himself

Posted by 50Cent
wiked mp3 player. Is that one a 20 gb right? do they come in smaller versions (i.e. 15 gb or 10gb ??? )

Posted by themarques
Just 20Gb for now. I also found out that you will be able to connect your digital camera via USB to it and download your pictures to the player. That I think is a bonus point as you wont need to buy a Belkin Ipod reader or whatever its called.

Man I cant wait for it to arrive.

Posted by Jools
@themarques: I don't bother with 3G phones and I rarely use WAP, GPRS etc. exactly because I do have ADSL at home, and the mobile experience isn't comparable.

Personally, I wouldn't bother compressing MPEGs to fit on a P900. I'd watch the original DVD at home in all its glory.

However, music is something I can listen to easily while driving, working, walking down the street etc., whereas watching a film requires the use of my eyes which are essential while doing most tasks!

I'm not saying people shouldn't do these things, its just not for me.

Posted by themarques
@JoolsG3 No thats cool, hence why I said each to himself... But hey they call people like us "Early Adopters" I am sure you will all follow suite.

Posted by marceta
wow. i just want 1!

Posted by themarques
Ok so it took longer than expected, but it has finally arrived..man I cant wait to get home and play around with it...eee will post a few pics here soon.

Ipod(mini) looks better...

Melik-

Posted by themarques
Dude, how can you possibly compare an Ipod mini with this beauty? I had the mini when it came out and gave it away after a couple of weeks...

Posted by Superluminova
it does look very cool, but i just love the simplisty of the ipod but I am also a sony fan to! I think the problem with the sony is that its black which make it look alot bigger than it actually is?

Posted by ewap8
This Sony player is 699 dollars, compared to 399 dollars - the cost of an iPod.

iPod controls over 50% of the mp3 player market.

iPod looks far better (and sexier).

Posted by themarques
"iPod controls over 50% of the mp3 player market." Remember who was the leader in this game...and trust me Sony will regain its crown.

With regards to the Ipod being "sexier" I am kinda guessing you dont have a girlfriend... or maybe she is called Ipod Mini........

Europe 'not interested' in video iPod
By Karen Haslam

http://yahoo.reuters.com/fina[....]1-01_10-37-17_l01573745_newsml

According to a survey, Europeans are not interested in a gadget that would play music and video.

The survey by Jupiter Research found that just five per cent are interested in a device that plays both music and video.

Over a quarter (27 per cent) were only interested in a gadget that just plays music. Jupiter questioned 5,000 consumers from Britain, Germany, France, Sweden, Spain and Italy.

The findings go some way to back up Apple CEO Steve Jobs claims that there is no market for portable video on the iPod. He doesn't believe that people would want to watch movies on the small screen, in public.

However, 13 per cent of respondents were interested in a portable video-only player (sounds like a portable DVD player to me!) and seven per cent would like a gadget that plays video games and has a video-playback feature (sounds like a Sony PSP to me!), according to Jupiter.

Reuters suggests that the findings do not bode well for Microsoft, which is trying to kickstart a new market for digital devices that play music and movies with its Portable Media Center software. Microsoft's Bill Gates is convinced that there is a market for devices that allow you to watch movies on the move.

Gates said: "Ask kids in the back of a car on a two-hour trip, 'Hey, would you like to have your videos there?' My kids would "I guess Steve's kids just listen to Bach and Mozart. But mine, they want to watch Finding Nemo. I don't know who made that, but it's really a neat movie."

Jupiter Research analyst Ian Fogg told Reuters: "The problem with the do-everything-devices is they are too bulky, too pricey and there is a relative shortage of multimedia content to play on them."

I own a 4g Ipod from friday because Sony wasn't able to offer me 2 simple things: a "real" mp3 player and get loose of the dockingstation, you need it to transfer songs ( not very usefull for a portable device !)
So, I went for the Ipod but Aplle has more things to learn like: give a good manual ( mine was formatted to RAW and couldn't in FAT32, had to browse google for an hour ), better sound and better design !!!!!, I can't see anything revolutionary ..., startegy of flooding the market with different versions (?!), scratches very very very easilly !!!!!!!!!!! and no pouch or something like that for the bigger models

But sony has to learn from Apple too: multiple format support, easy of use for the cables ( firewire and usb support, ... ) and the package .

Other than that the Ipod is a cool player but I change it directly for a sony if they give me a real mp3 player

(snip)

Apple's been doing that for years with all their models. Release one, wait 2 weeks, bring out the replacement.

I guess in one way at least they're sticking to tradition.

Posted by Jools
Actually, if you look at this page you'll see the average update cycle for all Apple's products:

iPods = 167 days
iMacs = 193 days
iBooks = 158 days
PowerMacs = 176 days

So update cycle is around 5-6 months on average for all Apple's products.

As far as flooding the market with different models there are only 3 iPod models + 1 U2 special edition

  • The music only iPod (2 sizes)
  • the iPod Photo (2 sizes)
  • the iPod mini (5 colours)

    So that's just 9 combinations + 1 special edition

    Compare that to Creative

  • 21 basic models
  • Zen Micro is available in 10 colours
  • Zen NX in 2 sizes
  • Zen USB 2.0 in 2 sizes
  • MuVo Micro N200 in 7 colours
  • MuVo² FM in 4 colours
  • MuVo Slim in 7 colours and 4 sizes each
  • MuVo TX FM in 4 sizes
  • MuVo TX in 3 sizes
  • Rhomba NX in 3 sizes

    So that's over 60 different models!! Who's flooding the market???

    woo - hoo! i'm get my ipod photo in 37 days from the apple store in NYC! i can't wait! and the resaon i'd never buy a sony is that everyone i've ever had has broke within six months!

    Posted by Gigs
    Heh Jools..

    iPods = 167 days
    iMacs = 193 days
    iBooks = 158 days
    PowerMacs = 176 days

    Lovely list, it does however fail miserably to take into account historical macintosh models which Apple themselves superceeded at a VERY fast rate.

    Yes, the above list isn't bad, a 6 month lifecycle.. But it hasn't always been that way.

    Posted by Jools
    Surely, what Apple is doing now is of more relevance than what they may have done in the past?

    Posted by Gigs
    lol.. if that held true no one would talk about Emulators, Ericsson or anything else in the past.

    Besides, you did say ALL Apples products.

    Posted by zMastaa
    wait....lol i think Sony "edited" the design of the psp and....used a better LCD and made it into an media player...

    just my thoughts on first glance

    Posted by Melik
    lol this topic is 1 year old ?!

    but i hope that apple won't bring a video iPod...

    iPod should be just a music player...
