When I got my Orange-branded K700i I had it unlocked and unbranded. Now I want to upgrade the firmware (it's on R2AA003) but SEUS gives me the "not permitted/not approved" message as though my handset is still branded. Does "unbranding" not unbrand a handset completely? In which case, how do I get the firmware updated?
Posted by Sebby
Unfortunately not. The SEUS works out whether a handset is permitted to use the service based on its IMEI. The CDA tells the SEUS which firmware to download, but if the phone is disallowed due to the operator (hence the IMEI), there's no way around it. The CDA only comes into play if the phone is allowed in the first place.
You could try taking it to a service centre, but they might not do it as it has been unbranded, which theoretically voids the warranty. Alternatively, use DaVinci to flash. It'll cost you for a credit (not very much) and you can update to the latest version (R2AY).
Posted by wossname
Thanks for the info. The moral of that story is probably to buy an unbranded handset in the first place!

Mmm this is really strange and certainly the first time I have heard of SEUS blocking updates by IMEI. On the K700i, SEUS blocked updates based on the firmware CDA settings. I suppose what could have happened is that the company that reflashed your phone forgot to change the CDA settings which is why your phone failed.
What is your current firmware version numbers? If you can provide us with everything displayed on the firmware info page (obviously don't post the IMEI number
One final thought is that it could be a problem with SEUS as it is renowned for being unreliable. We had a similar problem/message with the K700i update service earlier in the year and just before they released R2AE033 so it may not be your phone.
If you are really desperate you can always flash your own phone using http://www.davinciteam.com as this will work with your supplied USB cable.

I have just chatted to a mate of mine who unbranded his orange phone using davinciteam and he is now able to use the update service ok. So this is either a problem with the CDA or SEUS.
Posted by Sebby
@ smjohns
I can assure you it doesn't work based on the CDA, or certainly didn't. I won't go into detail, but I know this for a fact.

is R2AY004 the latest firmware of SE K700i?
Posted by wossname
Hit another problem now. Got a DaVinci Team credit, but the flash stalls with a "can't transfer block"/"0x00556 error" or something similar.

I think R2AY004 has been finally oficially released!!!!
A friend of mine got his k700 from the Service Center today, and they use R2AY004 in it
This interests me mainly because with this version we can use mp4 as ringtones/alarm

I do have a K500i ,and i would like to update its firmware from the SE official site using the online update service.
But the problem is that i don't have the cables that is mentioned in the site( the one which looks like a desktop charger) is it possible to update the firmware using the ordinary serial or usb cables

@Sebby
Fair play matey. I can only speak of what I have picked up from the internet and obviously this can be very unreliable. I do find it strange that if all Orange IMEI's are blocked how several of my friends have managed to re-flash their phones using Davinci (without fiddling with the IMEI) and now their phones are updatable using SEUS.
@wossname
Looking at your CDA number it does not seem to match the installed language. According to tables I have found on the interweb:
http://www.se-world.info/thread.php?postid=148804#post148804
For EU_1 firmware language, your CDA 'should' be CDA102286/16 and not /0. This 'could' be what is causing your problems with SEUS. Mu phone is EU_2 and has the correct CDA1002286/17. If I were you I would use Davinci to re-flash your phone but update the CDA to 103386/16. I am not guarranteeing this will work...but worth a try and you can atleast fully update your phone to the latest firmware at the same time.
Ok Sebby I know this goes against what you are saying....and I am not trying to argue with you or piss you off but if nothing else wossy will have the latest firmware this way.

@anooprajendran
i think not, you should use the specified device for it to work.. or another option is to bring it to an authorized SE service center and let them do the job.. this way you can be sure that its going to happen right..

I bought an unbranded K750i in france - its current firmware is R1A044. I'd really like to stay legitimate by using SE to upgrade my firmware, but i'm not too thrilled to be sitting idle at the initial firmware release due to SE not updating/maintaining their update service.
My issues are at least this:
. the french support web site has no links for the SE Update Service
. the uk support web site's JWS app says that my operator doesn't support the service (with both an SFR sim and a TMobile sim tried)
(. the swiss support site's JWS app says that i have no USB cable - kwality)
I spoke with a SE service rep on the phone who called me in response to a ticket on this. He attempted to tell me that k750i hardware differs between markets and this is the reason that my unbranded phone couldn't be updated via the SEUS web sites i had visited. He then warned me against visiting other countries' support sites to update my phone through those (seemingly contradicting his hardware theory - since if it was really hardware, why would any other country's site allow me to update)...
Clearly there's something amiss with SE's firmware updating system (or else why would an entire country, like france) not have a link for the SEUS, while other country's misreport and mis-infer information with the phone and the pc.
I'd like not to use DaVinci, i'd really like to use SE - but it's absurd to see firmware release after firmware release come out and have the SE support site be frozen in a half-working, out dated state..

i updated my K700i from r2c001 to r2ae033, using SEUS. when on silent the camera shutter sound was gone on the old firmware. but after updating it comes on even in the silent profile. is there a way to stop it?
Posted by manilabynight
I don't have a usb cradle for my K700i but I'm thinking of borrowing one from a friend so I can update using the online SEUS facility myself. I'm from the Philippines and my phone is generic and unbranded. Currently, this is my setting:
R2L001
prgCXC 125882_HONG_KONG_C
LCD 200406041
CAMERA 3.9
ITP CXC 125 813 R1S
Custom
CDA 102286/102 R5A
CXC 125822 R2L001
ASIAN_LAT_2
I read in this post that the latest firmware on SEUS is R2AE033 and that Search function is disabled in Asian firmware. How can I enable that function for my phone? I also kind of confused why my CDA has a /102 at the end and I can seem to find this code anywhere in the CDA list that was referred to here.
If I update to R2E will it be a good idea to update further to the R2AY004 from DaVinci since it increases the Bluetooth speed and fixes the noise in the photos?
Posted by smjohns
With SEUS you keep all your settings although with the Davinci update it will be as if you perform a master reset and will loose everything. Make sure you back up
Can one of the admin guys update the front page post as R2AY is still not on SEUS.
Posted by mwarner
R2AY is not on SEUS, but this is pointed out in the first post:
"The latest Firmware on SEUS is R2AN001 for O2 phones and R2AE033 for unbranded / other operators. "
The first post on my Firmware Overview pages give information on ALL available firmwares - not just those that are available on SEUS.

R2AY004 |
Yes but as per the extract taken from the 1st post R2AY004 is quoted as being available on SEUS as of 10/06/05 which is incorrect.

@ mwarner
I was trying to say what smjohns just mentioned.
Posted by mwarner
@rambalu80 / smjohns
Ooops
I'll investigate further.
[Edit]
My fault - it would appear that they got it updated at a SE Service Centre, not on SEUS. I have modified the first post accordingly.
Sorry for any confusion!

Im on Orange in uk and I still only get R2AE
Ive also tried the Irish web service and that says the same You already have the latest software ware version on your phone bla bla bla bla lol
Posted by smjohns
Very strange. Based on some of the bugs that people have found with R2AY004, it could be that SE are holding off the UK release until the next official release? Or perhaps they are staggering their Europe release.....but very strange in view of them just pressing a button
Posted by kruez
I'm on Orange in the UK, software currently at R2A033 and thought I'd give it a try.
I thought all was well as I didn't get the standard software already up-to-date message.
But when the update finished it's still at R2A033... Very strange :~
Posted by GothTeddy
Just tried my unbranded K700 and still get R2AE033, looks like they're holding out on us UK'ers.
Posted by macdanne
Still R2AE in sweden also
Not fun
Posted by rambalu80
I am in the US and I dount if R2AY will be out for the US. However, I will try after I get off of work!
Posted by macdanne
Made a telephone call to SE 1 minute ago.
- ServiceCenters have R2AY but not the SEUS,he told me.
- yes I have found it to be so but why? I asked.
- I have no good answer too that, he told me.
The DS25 is NOT very well spent money so far...

I have a K700i, but when i try to use SEUS i get the message
"Your device is not permitted to use this service
Your operator does not approve the use of this service with this device.
We look forward to assisting you again soon.
Thank you for using the Sony Ericsson Update Service!"
Is there any waY I can self update????
Posted by rambalu80
I just tried updating my K700i from R2AE to R2AY but I got the message saying my phone already had the latest firmware. So, it hasn't been released in the US either.
Posted by Sebby
@ vtr
You can use DaVinci instead.
Posted by smjohns
But if you do use Davinci, you will loose all your data and settings (including GPRS, Text, MMS, etc). Make sure you back them up if you use this service.

Posted by darrengf
Well I have a Orange K700i. So i went onto the Portugal Dowloads, didnt have a clue what it said (well i did a little)
I let it download the file, but still have R2AE.
So it only looks like certain phones that are being updated and its not just the UK site
Posted by troymclure
R2ay004 Is availeble on Danish SEUS
Posted by darrengf
But for what network?
I your phone unlocked and not branded?
I dont mind trying again
but i speak no danish at all. so could be downloaded the same file again

Posted by Sebby
It makes no difference which SEUS you go to, incidentally.
Posted by darrengf
Well Yes. I have just tried to update on the Danish website and it says that my device is already up to date.
So theres your answer. you can go on them all with your phone. It doesnt matter which site or language you use. You still cant update your phone.
We will just have to wait for the latest update our selves.
Hope this helps
