I don't test it myself (don't try it before) but a lot of PPC users post (on Pocket PC site) that the BT dialup networking problem occurs after upgrading to R2L.
This thread seems to confirm this issue.

I don't know if anybody else has but I've emailed SE to find out if the Online Firmware Update for the K700 is just down or if the service has been terminated.
Will let you know the response

I encounter the same problem after firmware upgrade.
The original firmware version of my K700i was R2A. My ipaq 2210 could access the internet without any problem via using K700i as a GPRS modem thru the bluetooth connection.
After the firmware upgraded to R2L001, it failed, but it is no problem for my ipaq 2210 to access internet by using K700i as a GPRS modem thru IrDA connection.

Ok, thanks guys. I've updated the first post.

Ok
just got back to me about the online firmware updates.
Dear Sir or Madam,
Thank you for contacting the Sony Ericsson Call Centre.
With regards to your enquiry,
They are no software upgrades available for the k700i at this time. This is a new phone. If they are any faults they will be an upgrade in the future. However we don't have a release date. For up-to-date information please check our website.
Should you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us again for further help and support.
Not really much to go on for people living a distance from a

I have an HP Ipaq series running windows 2003. Before the upgrade the problem i used to get was during syncronising the phone and the palm top. Now after the upgrade that problem is gone and a new one is there. I cannot connect to the internet via bluetooth

@ mwarner
There is one more fix i found out. You can now send pictures to other k700/other phones properly. Previously a 40kb image would be reduced in quality and size to about a 5kb picture, when it was send. (Note that this used to happen most of the time, Not all the time). Now i have confirmed this problem is fixed.
However a new problem is there. Its a rare case when the bluetooth transfer takes place in first try. Most of the time it says connection failed. If i try again or a few more times, then the connection is properly established.
I also found out this bug a user was facing at another forum (k-700.com). Someone please reconfirm

"I have noticed a bug which has not been fixed by the R2L001 upgrade. I originally found this within R2A041. On the Phone locks if you set this to automatic, the phone should only ask you for a phone lock password if you change the sim card. It seems if you set this to automatic, the phone lock code is still requested at each power up."

hello everybody!
Pleeeeease help me!
I bought my k700i from dubai
I went to my SE service center(I live in Romania/Bucharest) to flash my phone with R2L001(I had R2A041)
The guy over there looked at my phone's service info and he saw that at customization it was written CDA xxxxxxxx/13. He explained to me that '/13' means that the phone was locked to a network(code 13 ) probably in Dubai,and it was unlocked there until I bought it(to be network free it should be '/1')
He also said that it might be very possible if he puts in the R2L001 the phone might lock again to that 'code 13' network in Dubai, and there is no way hecan unlock the phone because there is no software to do that! The only way to unlock it is to go back in Dubai(impossible)to contact there that network.
Did you encountered the same problems when you've upgraded your FW? If so, how did you solve it?

@gseth
Ok, thanks. I have added your picture bugfix to the list.

Hi. Regarding the bug in R2L - Pocket PCs can no longer connect to the internet via bluetooth. I had my K700 upgraded today at CPW in Guildford. All OK except I can't connect to GPRS on Orange from my iPaq 4150 using Bluetooth. My laptop seems to work fine. The solution (which seems to work so far) is to add an extra AT command string - 'Z' in the 'Extra dial-string modem commands' dialog on the Pocket PC. ATZ should reset the internal modem to it's default configuration, I assume similar to power cycling the unit. Just type 'z' or 'Z' into the dialogue, not the 'AT' part as the iPaq assumes this and will always prefix any extra strings with 'AT' before sending them to the phone. Would be interested to find out if this works for other users. Good luck.
Posted by JSteeman
It's not a bug in R2L, it's abug in PocketPC 2002. Pocket PC 2002 can not handle the number of profiles available in the K700. The only solution is upgrading to PocketPC2003.
Posted by googol
Sorry I should have clarified, I am running Pocket PC 2003, just upgraded to iPaq 4150 Firmware 1.10. It probably is a bug in the Pocket PC software, however the solution is still valid (at least on my setup).
Posted by Smogg
"Z"!! Yes, it works with ipaq 4150!!!
Posted by googol
I may have found a new bug in R2L. I am on the UK Orange network and have subscribed to their Line2 service. Before the upgrade to R2L I could edit the line tags, I chose the highly original 'Personal' and 'Work'. Since the upgrade I can only edit the Line 1 tag. The line 2 tag is set to 'Line 2'. When I try to edit it, I get a ding noise similar to the one you get when typing an SMS and you go past the 160 character limit. In the top right hand corner of the editing window there is a '0' displayed, indicating, I assume no characters available. Does anyone else have a similar problem or a work around. Thanks.

Thanks googol!
The workaround fix the problem. Now my ipaq 2210 (ppc2003) can connect to internet via k700i (R2L) bluetooth smoothly after jusy key in a "Z" to the field of 'Extra dial-string modem commands'.
Posted by mwarner
@googol
Thanks for that! I've added your workaround to the first post.

hey guys, i just got this fantastic new phone! only thing is it still has the original firmware, anyone got a copy of the download that they can send to me pls?
thankyou very much!
Posted by mwarner
Just having the firmware file won't help you much. You will require specialist hardware and software to flash the phone yourself.
If I were you i'd ring up SE and find your nearest SE Service Centre where they will perform the upgrade free of charge.
Posted by mwarner
I have added a link to Ben's post listing UK, Netherland and Swiss Service Centres.

oh ok, i was thinkin if i could get the file for the sim free uk version and use my mates docking station i could just upgrade it that way

k700i < bt > ipaq 3870 modem incompatibility
Technical Details at Bottom.
In pocket pc 2002 bt manager, when i select the (already paired/bonded) k700 the bt program freezes while it is "retrieving services for this device". The bt program then crashes.
"Select as bluetooth modem" does not appear in the "actions" menu for the k700.
After prolonged interaction with hp "instant"-"support" the last word is that "there is an incompatibility between the bluetooth systems of the two devices".
HP's representative said that because it is an "old model" that he did not expect there would be a software revision to fix the problem.
Sony Ericsson's representative did not seem to be aware of the isuue and could find no similar isuues in the Sonyericsson system because itr's a new model. He did undertake to follow up through the company's system and to personally report it to his supervisor.
Has anyone figured out a way around this??
If not, I sugest that you lobby hp and Sony Ericsson until someone finds a fix. I guess the alternative is to buy a new pda or another new phone.
Technical Details;
iPaq 3870
Operating System;Pocket PC 2002
rom upgrade version; 2.20
bt manager version; 1.1

How can you see on your phone what type of firmware you got?
Posted by mike_k7
Posted by JagoK700i
dunno if anyones noticed this, but i just found a bug in r2a
When you have media player minimized doing its thang and the phone locks, if you recieve a txt it doesnt ask you to unlock the phone first and you can select yes to read, if you do the screen stays dim and not its normal brightness which makes things hard to see(not very hard but id rather have normal brightness) when youve sent your txt it goes back to as it was, i.e locked and media player resumes.... i love this phone its very capable, after having a nokia and working in the I.T industry id expect a phone to crash with putting it thru this but media player keeps on chugging along when no other sounds play! FANTASTIC!
Posted by mike_k7
You found only one bug?
I had many before finaly upgrading to R2L.Here are just a few:
- I couldn't set the default no. in the phonebook:it never stayed the way I selected it, or I had to choose other no.as defult in order to show me as defult the no I want
- of course, the battery life and meter
- when I charged it,the kight never went off
- if I was in a menu(any menu) the light NEVER went off
- lots of crashing(most of them when usig JAVA aoications.games
and others...
Posted by JagoK700i
no lol, i found others, there in my other topic but was just postin it here
Posted by major nese
with java-games there are lot of bugs, the cursor-keys 2,4,5,6,8 will often work but the "joystick" didnt work. to escape you have to push the "step-back"-button (hold it for a few secends and it will give you the possibility to exit.
Posted by mike_k7
@major nese:
I think the problem with the joystick not working(and with others keys as well) has nothing to do with the fw.
The problem is that those games were not designed for k700.
This issue has been discused before,but I can't find where.
Try find it and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Just upgraded to R2L. Did SE remove the possibility to have a contact to be automatically copied to the simcard when adding a new to the phones memory. Or have I just gone blind, cause I just cant find the option anymore?
/Kim
Posted by simsphil
@kim...
I still have R2A but, follow this...
in R2A, you HAD to go to : "Phonebook", "Options", "Advanced", "auto save on sim", and then select ON/OFF
My phone language is French, so maybe you'll have to translate some words for your phone.

Added preliminary information about R2V and R2N.
It would be great if someone could confirm:
R2V - whether you really can now use MP3s as ringtones.
R2N - What countries / networks this firmware has been released for.

Any one upgraded the firmware from SE's website? The update seems on, but when I tried installing, it didn't work...
Posted by simsphil
@prospect
Yes, the update works great, but if you use windows XP with SP2 installed, be carrefull SP2 blocks downloads, you can allow them by clicking the upper banner under your links.

simsphil, Thanks for your followup. I have XP with SP2 and have allowed the download. But after I installed the client program, then nothing happens... (the SE shows something like "... you will be redirected to another window"). BTW, what is the firmware version from the update? Can you still take pictures quietly?

thanks guys, very helpful!
Posted by simsphil
@prospect
when downloading the "client program", did you care to OPEN it and not SAVE it, it will install itself and then another window will open.
If you carrefully read instructions during update procedure, it should be OK.
About taking pictures quietly, don't know as I don't use camera, after exploring the menu, I think it's not more allowed.

please... can we keep this thread for K700 firmware overview and discuss issues and problems of the online update in the thread dedicated to that
K700 online update service is back up!
thanks!
Posted by simsphil
@prospect,
sorry, forgot it,
the last version from the update seems to be R2L001.
@masseur
sorry masseur, last post just to try answer...

I have the software R2A041, I want to use the mp3 ringtones on the vodafone network. after reading a prevuos message it says if i upgrade my software to R2V001 i can use the mp3 as ringtones. Is this true. Which service centre can i visit to get software. i live in London and have called the service centres listed in my area and they say they have SOFTWARE R2L. Will R2L allow us on the vodafone network use the mp3 tunes as ringtones?
Posted by smjohns
Not sure mate. Take it in, get it upgraded and see what happens. You have two possible outcomes !! If the list on the other thread is not correct for Sony service centres, then phone SE's customer support and they have a more recent list and can provide you with the phone and address of the closest one.
Be warned as some people think that the lack of MP3 for ringtones functionality is down to a vodafone specific restriction. Even if you get your firmware updated, they will install the latest vodafone offering which may not remove your problem.
You could always try your closest major Car Phone Warehouse as although they are not recommended by SE they do offer free upgrades for phones under warranty.
Posted by mark9
Reference Vodafone branded mobiles. I took mine to Hays Technology, nr Banbury. They tried to update the firmware with R2L but the phone would not allow this. They were able to update with R2V which I understand to be the Vodafone version of R2L but MP3 still limited in use - unable to use as ringtone.
