To find out which firmware revision your phone currently has installed, perform the following:

>*<<*<*

Where < and > represents pushing the joystick left and right respectively.

Updating your firmware

To update your firmware it is recommened you take your phone to your nearest Service Centre. Firmware upgrades are free within the warranty period:

UK / Netherlands / Swiss / Norway Service Centres

Note that UK SE Service Centres do not really exist any more. I would advise phoning them first to see if they still perform firmware updates. If not, your local Carphone Warehouse may be able to perform firmware updates.

Alternatively, if you have a Sony Ericsson DSS-20 or DSS-25, you can visit the K700i Update Service (SEUS II) to perform a Firmware update.

This service currently works for the following phone brands:

Unbranded - Yes
Orange UK - Yes
O2 UK - Yes
T-Mobile UK - No*
Vodafone UK - No
Vodafone NL - No
T-mobile NL - No

Please note that not all phones will be able to update to the latest firmware. Each world region validates their own firmware, with some regions lagging others. Branded phones also tend to lag behind - operators must validate and brand new firmware revisions which leads to release delays or refusals to accept new firmware.

* Support for branded mobiles appears to have been removed since the introduction of R2AE on SEUS.

Digital Rights Management

Vodafone users should download Sony Ericsson's DRM packager to assign Digial Rights to their MP3s for use on the K500/K700. Firmware revision R2V001 or later is required for full MP3 support.

excellent. I have added this to the Answers to the most common questions on Esato Forums (FAQ style). Thanks!

Posted by mwarner
Thanks Mass . I did the same thing for the T610 firmwares, which should still be kicking about somewhere on the forum.

Some data I have gathered from my own K700i:

R2A041

Backlight timings
- If I leave the phone on a Menu the backlight doesn't fade, e.g. the more menu
- First fade after 20 seconds (reduced brightness)
- Second fade after 28 seconds (to backlight off)
- Third fade after 40 seconds (to display off)

Java performance
- JBenchmark 1 - 2640
- JBenchmark 2 - 122 (first pass), 123 (second pass)

I would appreciate results for the other firmwares I have listed above.

Thanks,

Mike

I never really heard much about R2C001, the version I have for my Orange (UK) K700 and its bugs. Anyone shed any light on this?

@jakester2000

i've got R2C001, on orange uk, one bug i've noticed is the GPRS wap and internet seems to be pretty flakey but i don't know if that's peculiar to my phone or orange....

oh, the other weird thing it occasionally does is run the battery down overnight when the phone is switched off with a full charge but not plugged into the charger, very annoying!

ps, got 122 for jbenchmark2

@StoneRoses
Thanks for that! Nice work! Bizarre that you have slightly lower benchmarks than the users of older firmwares!

@vegetaleb
> The ding sound on IR transfer is still here sorry !
Ok, thanks. I assume this is for firmware R2L when transfering data to the phone? If you could try Bluetooth too then that would be great!

Can you people who have firmwares newer than R2A tell me whether you still have the bug whereby you get a second or so delay at the start of a call where the other person can't hear you?

Also, does Bluetooth really switch itself off after a few seconds with R2L?

Mike

Posted by arnljot
I don't have that delay when I use my phone in normal operations (fw R2L001), but when I use my bluetooth handsfreeset I do get the delay.

Posted by shbib
@mwarner

my R2C001 still has the second or so delay before a caller can hear you bug

Posted by JKay
R2E also still has the one second delay when answering.

In R2E the appointments are no longer marked as bold dates in the month calender. So now you can no longer see on which days you need to do things. Now you have to go to the week view to see your appointments.

In R2L the feature has reappeared! Thanks god!

Bluetooth still shuts down in R2E (at least on my phone).

But MP3 and Video playback is better than with R2A.

Backlight still fades after 40 secs!

guys, can I suggest that we keep this thread for the summary and benchmark etc but keep firmware version specific comments for the firmware specific threads otherwise its all out of place and harder for people to find stuff

thanks!

Hi mwarner,

Perhaps I could add some notes for the R2J041 upgrade I've made it Hong Kong.

R2J041
- Snooze is now available on Recurrent alarms
- At least 10% improvement in battery life (over and above R2E?)
- Time of the last call now displayed in the missed calls list
- The fonts of Operator logo, the command keys such as "Calls", "More" are a bit larger and the font of Date & time has been Slightly reduced.
- Faster to load the JAVA games than before.

Answer to your question 1 :
"I notice on my R2A phone that when I answer a call it takes a few seconds before the person at the other end can hear me. Is this a fault with all R2A phones? Has it been fixed, and if so in what firmware?"
---> Yes, its fixed in R2J041.

Bugs
- There is still a chance to find that Mr. X's telephone number displayed under Mr. Y's name when I browse the phone book.

Hi,
I'm new to this site but could you tell me how to see which software i have on my phone k700i.

Have the camera probs been corrected with the new R2L upgrade. My cam is good in day time but at night there are dots appearing on the pic even with good light.

HK's R2J can't mute the shutter sound while R2E can

Posted by vee
Hi,

There was another bug in R2A... entering names and numbers in phonebook :
After entering a few names and numbers, the numbers would be deleted for the first names you have entered. There was no pattern or way to repeat it. Sometime it would happen after 2 new names and sometime after 10. I tried 2 different versions of O2 branded ones and 2 unbranded that I got in Croatia. In R2L it doen't happen any more...

Bugs in R2L

1. Phone seems to freeze ocasionally when sending MMS and than restarts itself.
2. Also ocasionally while K700 and HBH600 are connected seems like connection freezes. The phone is still in Handsfree profile, Bluetooth is shown as paired, but you can not answer or do anything the call with HBH600. Restart...
3. Also K700 and HBH600... If you walk away from K700 with HBH600 for like 100 meters (K700 and HBH600 are connected), K700 will just kill connection and also Bluetooth off (immediately).

Anyone else noticed these bugs?

Take care

Velimir

@vamsi6: Welcome to Esato!

You get to the service menu by pressing >*<<*<*, where < and > are joystick direction left and right respectively.

From there you will most certainly be able to find your way around... .

Good luck! Enjoy!

Hi,

Maybe it is been told before.. but where to get the newest Firmware... I life in The Netherlands, in Groningen. I have a phone with an english menu, R2A version.. I would like the newest firmware and dutch language if it is possible.. now sms messages in T9 is bad.. because he doesn't know dutch words...

Posted by mwarner
I have just updated the first post with new information gathered from this thread. Take a look, if you are interested.

Posted by vojta66
@mwarner
Well done m8. I have just upgraded to R2L001 and can confirm all of that. Phone seems to be better now. Especially battery life was improved remarkably.

Posted by mwarner
I attempted to upgrade to R2L myself over the weekend, but the SE Service Centre in Coventry hadn't been given a new key to allow the update of K700 firmwares. I'll have to call back in a couple of weeks apparently.

I didn't know anything about having to have a key before! The error message that appeared on the screen mentioned something about Key A001. I don't suppose anyone here knows what that means do they?

Posted by gseth
I have upgraded the software to R2L001.

They have removed the SE wap link from the Application Folder!

- JBenchmark 1 - approx 2,313
- JBenchmark 2 - approx 127
- Software versions:
- LCD 200406041
- Camera 3.9
- ITP CXC 125 813 R1S

One more thing. When you send a file (eg. a picture) to your phone via bluetooth i get the following options:

Saved in Pictures in Phone Memory, Use Now?

If i Click yes these new options are there that i get:

View
Set as wallpaper
Set as screensaver
Set as starup screen
Add to contact

Another thing is that i still get the Ding Ding Sound when transfering files to the phone via Bluetooth. The Overview says it has been removed??

Posted by mwarner
Thanks Gaurav! I'll update the post with your findings.

It's a bit strange that someone said their R2L stopped the sound when transfering data to the phone, but i've had two confirmations that it doesn't now!

One question to R2L users - Do both IR and Bluetooth turn off after 4 minutes of inactivity? If so, this is a shame. I leave my Bluetooth on all the time in case I need to use FMA or transfer files - I keep my phone in my suit jacket, which is usually hung up away from my desk.

Posted by StoneRoses
BT in R2L do not turn off by itself. I also use FMA and did not have any problem on BT connection.

Posted by gseth
I noticed one more thing. There is a change in icon when connecting to your gprs network. There is a globe icon with 4 silver ball circling around the globe. This shows up when you connect your gprs internet on a pc via your phone. Once connected the globe icon at the status bar is the same! (My 200th post)

Also note that Firmware R2C001 allowed the camera shutter to be muted on silent or meeting mode so this can be removed from the R2E firmware overview eventually.

R2C001
LCD: 200404231
Camera: 3.9
ITP: CXC 125 813 R1T

Bugs:
* The usual screen goes white 'crash' happened to me twice so far. Once when it was just sitting there.
* Once when moving photos into a new folder, some stayed after they had been marked for moving. Some vanished though they were still there after a double check.

PS. Battery green to red time seems ok to me.

Why all this searching for new features and fixes???

SE must do some docs about the changes done in the
FW!!!! If not they are pretty stupid!
Why can't someone at SE, or connected somehow, just
send an "changes list" when a new FW is released???
Or maybe it is obtainable on the net?!?

Because these opinions about "little bit brighter screen",
"maybe 10% faster", "uses a little bit of this & that" are
just subjective opinions. Why not get the facts instead?

IMHO anyway

Just to repeat a post. How do upgrade firmware. went into the service menu (top tip, seems handy) and it say's i have R2A041.

whats the logical upgrade path. mostly interested in longer battery life, and losing the camera shutter noiseand fixing the delay when answering / making some calls.

One more thing. Will i lose my pics / tunes / vids etc when doing this.?

I am having R2L, just upgraded a week back, I almost daily transfer data to my phone either via IR or BT but as u said I never get that DING DING sound which i used to get when i was having R2A.

Posted by mwarner
@gseth
Thanks for that. I've updated my post to include your GPSR icon information.

@jakester2000
Thanks. I've added R2C to the list of firmwares

@samwel
You would think so wouldn't you! However, as far as I remember no official firmware release notes have ever been spotted by anyone here at Esato. If you go into a SE Service Centre and ask what changes there are in the new firmware they have no idea - I usually have to tell them!

@vineet_d & gseth
It seems odd that you two seem to have different ideas on what happens when you transfer files from your PC to your phone via Bluetooth or IR! I have re-added the muted BT/IR comms issue, saying on some phones!

Another thing that people have differing views of is whether BT turns itself off after 4 minutes of inactivity. It should be easy enough to test for those of you with R2L - just turn on Bluetooth and leave it for more than 4 minutes without using it.

Any answers would be most appreaiated

Posted by vee
Hi all and mwarner,

Thanks for all the overview. Regarding the BT issue. This is what is happening at my K700i, unbranded one, bought in Croatia with software version R2L:

The BT connection wont go off after 4 mins if I turn it on and leave it like that. No devices added or paired.
But when paired with HBH600 as I mentioned before this is what happens. FE: The phone is on my office table and HBH600 hanging around my neck. I normally use it for conversation. OK. I need to go to toilette which is more than 20 meters from where the phone is. When I come back the BT on the phone turns off (no icon). Totally! I wasn't in toilette for more than 30 seconds. This is just one example. It always happens when I go away from my K700i and it is paired with HBH600.

Hope this helps!

Does anyone have problems with phone freezing while sending MMS and than restarting itself and also with BT freezing (paired with HBH600 again) - the icon that K700i and HBH600 are paired is there, phone is in handsfree profile..., but you can not answer the call from HBH600?

Take care

Velimir

Posted by mwarner
Thanks Velimir! I think that sorts out the issue!

Posted by StoneRoses
Umm. Strange thing like that don't happen with my K700 and HBH-35.

Posted by vee
No problem.

I dont know what is causing this BT issue. At the moment not able to try another headset/phone... it might be HBH600, it might be K700i or anything else. It might be only in my case. I dont know.

Take care

Velimir

Posted by jakester2000
Point to note: With R2C001 the BT does NOT turn off after 4 minutes of non activity and not being paired.

Posted by mwarner
Added the change in SMS Delivery Notification sound on R2L.

For some strange reason my K700 with software version R2A couldn't be upgraded to a Dutch version so instead they installed R2L (european 2) on it. Now all my (wel most anyway) themes are f**ked up... Has anyone have a clue why these 2 things have occured?

Many thanks!

hmmmmmm im confused lol

i went to my service menu and then software and at the top it said R2A041 (the original FW release yes???)

im getting that annoying 2 second delay for people hearing me talk so i have the sony support centre a phone and the guy said to me theres no FW releases available!

he said that the dont know when and if one will be released it could be tomorrow it could be 3 months!!

as im in N. ireland and theres no Sony service centres i asked about how i could get it up granded "IF and when" the FW was released he said that i could do it via sync with my PC

so question time....Whos has got the R2L001 release? where did you get it done? how much was it? or even better if you have a copy i could sync with

cheers muchly

I flash my phone in a SE center, and did not cost me anything

Posted by kumtaya
I wrote a retailer in the US and asked for the firmware version and was given an R2B code :S Anyone knows what version is this? does it come between R2A and R2C? Of all the people at this site, how many of you purchased this phone unbranded or unlocked?

Posted by kumtaya
BUG QUESTION? When you get the 2 second delay, is this because you have voicemail messages that need to be checked? I know in the earlier models of SE phones there was a 2 second lag before the actually call and a few beeps to indicated "youve got mail" lol

Posted by vee
Hello,

Using non branded K700i with R2L for some time now a few more things / bugs:

1. Bluetooth is still not that stable... hope SE is working on it. Sometime connection breaks, sometime phone freezes, sometime it restarts itself... and all the little glitches. Not that bad, but it happens once a day so not that convinient.

2. Battery life is still, at least, not that good.

3. Sometimes the weirdest things happens: pressing the camera button restarts the phone. Strange!!!!

4. I have 3 sec. delay when answering call with HBH600, but I guess it is normal. Isn't it?

Thats just my opservations. Maybe not the common bugs, but just the things that ocasionally happen.

Take care

Velimir

After firmware upgrade to R2L my Ipaq 4150 and Ipaq 5550 cannot connect to internet via k700i via bluetooth. But connection through IR works perfect. Also desktop pc works fine (can connect to internet via k700i/bluetooth)

One more fix i found.

New contact =>New number =>Look up =>More =>Unsaved numbers

When you go there with r2a version you would get unlimited no. of phone numbers stored with no way of deleting them.

After the upgrade there are only 10 numbers stored, still you cannot delete them. But it is aleast better than having a load of junk numbers.

Thanks GSeth, i've updated the first post to reflect your fix.

mwarner,

Please include (very serious) BT bug that Smogg mentioned. This bug has been confirmed by many pocket pc users (including me).

This bug is very serious and never been on previous SE phone.

Ok, will do. First of all, though, can you confirm that this is an R2L issue only. What was your previous firmware and was it ok with that?
