Hi, I'm on UK O2 Pay&Go , and I want to get full mobile web for my PDA, however as I can only get WAP GPRS, I can't do this. Is there any way round, having to pay 25p a minute for a GSM data call?

I was told by someone on Digital Spy, that you guys could help?

U can change the port number to 8080 on some phnes dnt knw if it will work on your phne anyway isnt tesco doin free gprs till january?

Posted by MikLSP
You need a phone that can change proxy settings & then use:
Proxy Server Address
193.113.200.195
Proxy Port
8080

This works great for me using a P900 & O2 Online PAYG

Posted by mattb001
Why is that free, out of interest?

I use O2 P&G on my P900 as well, i think they are cheapest here in England. But what happens if you change the adress of the proxy server? You're not being charged anymore or can just access full web not just wap gprs?

Posted by peanut
You are being charged whichever port. In fact o2 actually advised me to use this port on my p900 for pay as you go so it's no secret. They know what we're up to...lol

Posted by titus
You just contradicted urself, & we arent charged on Port 80 or 8080. & its not actually full web as you cant access msn messenger etc...

Posted by MikLSP
You only get charged 1p per connection so I just leave it always connected. I believe you can use up to 1GB per month without further charge, at least that is what I have been told.

that maybe on ur network or not, however its 1p per page on o2 & actually if a page is big that aint true either. Ah I cant wait 4 unmetered net on phones 4 a monthly fee.

as of right now, im not being charged for gprs...and havent been charged for it for nearly two months...yes...im on pay and go (old genie sim) and i primarily use the 7610...so, if theres an error anywhere, then it is with o2...

Posted by MikLSP
@ titus
NO. It's 1p per connection and guess what............
I'm on O2 PAYG.

I noticed my balance seemed to keep going down by 1p all the time & thought it was from SMS but the O2 Customer Service Line said the charges for connecting to GPRS (1p per connection)

il be surprised if o2 customer care are actually right lol..usually, when i ring them, i end up telling them things...even the data support team...bloody useless...lol

Posted by MikLSP
Yes I agree but in this instance it seems they are right as my balance only goes down 1p each time I make a fresh connection and not each time I load a page etc.

Posted by Jj05
something somewhere is wrong then...my mrs got charged 40p for an hour online via gprs...lol...she with o2 and has the same sim as me..genie...dumb network...lol.

Posted by MikLSP
O2 seem to have always had problems properly charging for their GPRS. I think that's why it's been free for so long.

Posted by Jj05
yep thats true...i think o2 is also the only uk network still using analogue switchers...lol...still..there confusion is my gain...lol.

Posted by mattb001
Using those settings with an o2 online contract I don't seem to be getting charged either.

Ok I want to try it on my P900 as well, but which proxy setting should I change, the one in the WAP connection dialog or the Internet connection dialogue?

Just create a wap profile call it O2 GPRS then tick the use proxy enter 193.113.200.195 on IP & Port 8080 on port. make sure wap profill is linked 2 ur o2 internet account settings then click ok, now try it...

@ dekesh

You must have an O2 Online PAYG SIM not a normal O2 PAYG.

Here are my settings:

Internet Accnts:
-Accnt name: O2 WAP GPRS
-Conn. type: GPRS
-user name: payandgo
-password: Password
-Address: payandgo.o2.co.uk
-IP add. auto: Tick
-DNS add. auto: Tick
-Use Proxy: Tick
-Proxy add: 193.113.200.195
-Proxy port: 8080
-Enable PPP: Tick

WAP Accnt:
-Accnt name: O2 WAP GPRS
-Int. Accnt.: O2 WAP GPRS
-Use Proxy: Tick
-Add: 193.113.200.195
-Port: 9201
-user name: (blank)
-password: (blank)

Anythin not stated is left as default

why are some peoples gprs free? eg - mine!

Posted by Greggy
No @miklsp any o2 sim will do it dosnt have to be a o2 online sim

Posted by MikLSP
Fair enough but certainly not all of them do, unless people just can't put the setting in right!

regarding MikLSP's settings above, instead of using port 9201 on the WAP accout I used 8080 and my grps is completely free now.woohoo . I also checked to see whether this was just the monthly 1MB free allowance but 2day i used about 4MB and no change on my credit.had few connection probs tho like once i get disconnected n try to reconnect i get a message saying activation rejected but then i change the port bac to 9201 and try connecting and then i still get activation rejected, then i change the port bac to 8080 and it works again. however doesnt always work after applying the little trick jus mentioned.i think it works after a little time.not sure on the exact time you have to wait.I have left my GPRS connected since morning (GPRS timeout = never) and its been free all day so im not complaining.

Posted by dekesh
all o2 PAYG users give the above a try and let me know if it works.stil working totally free on my fone.mite only work on p800/p900/p910 tho becuase these fones allow you to have wap and internet accounts and also let you configure ports.however may also work on other fones which allow you to fiddle with ports.i know series 60 works cos both my bothers' GPRS has been free all the time.

Posted by vladichelsea
i tried all of the above on my p900 (changed the port to 8080 in wap and internet settings) and it seemed to work. but after downloading about 2mb of stuff i got msg from o2 saying: "you spent your monthly wap allowance, from now on you will be charged standard gprs rate". and from this moment i am charged for every connection depending how much i download, just like before i changed the proxy settings - the rate is 2 pounds for 1 MB. i use old o2 payg simcard btw.

Yahoo seem to have decided to make cookies a requirement since saturday. Has anyone else noticed this?

Does this port 80 traffic restriction not allow cookies to be saved/read or both?

What is the advantage of using outlook with pop3 over outlook with http?

Other outlook pop3 settings seem to use different ports for both in and out. Is this part of the problem and would changing these ports help?

Just trying to get my head around the restrictions and to get the most out of this.

thanks

Cebolla

this is interesting: when i connect to yahoo thru the in-build browser of my p900 everything is working, on the other hand when i try to connect with opera i always get stuck in the login with the error msg that my browser doesnt support cookies (i got cookies turn on in both browsers).

Posted by jonat8
You should be able to get to whatever port you like, as long as it's HTTP traffic. I can get to my website's webmail system on port 2095 and I can also get HTTPS which is something I couldn't seem to get when I was using the O2 GPRS a few months ago. I use Safari.

There is also a limit of 1.5Mb on any file you download. If you try downloading a 3Mb file, the proxy just terminates the download. However the browser thinks that the download completed successfully (but in fact the file is incomplete), so you can't resume it (on Safari at least).

I can't get POP3 or IMAP4 to work and nor does MSN Messenger, even with the HTTP proxy settings.

Cookies are a problem. If you have a cookie saved on your computer for a site, then you should be able to access the site as long as the cookie is still valid. For instance, I have lots of cookies for message boards on my computer and when I go to one such message board, I am still logged in and can post. However if I log out then I can't log back in. You could try using the dialup number to obtain the cookie then connecting via. GPRS and see if the cookie still works (some are tied to an IP address).

I use an o2 online pay n go sim and get free gprs on my P900 and pc using my P900 as an infrared modem, I don't get charged 1p every connection either. Same is true of my wifes online sim.

Posted by dekesh
@vladichelsea

opera is an internet browser and these are WAP settings and not internet settings hence the incompatibility.use dialup or full internet gprs settings 2 overcome this or use your pc's internet connection via syncstation or bluetooth.

Posted by cebolla
It seems some anyuser@... cookies seem to get through via wap dialup settings on my pocket pc while via a similar connection on my Desktop PC i can't even view google homepage. I found the settings somewhere which use port 8002 and leave the APN blank. I changed the port to 8080 while connected on PC and it would allow http traffic again, as it does via gprs.

Are there other ports which would work on dial up to allow cookies through, or do i need to access by standard dial up?

I still can't understand how i logged in last saturday and now it won't let me at all.

Thanks

Cebolla

For some reason im being charged using Opera but not for using the internal browser? The wap/internet settings are right so I can't understand why im being charged for one but not the other? Can anyone shed any light on this?

I use the GPRS on my k700 and I'm on an O2 contract, and I'm not been charged either! I think O2 has a problem with their charging mechanism for GPRS.

I probably shouldn't ask this, but when are they going to start? The reason I'm asking is that I'm probably going to switch to an Orange contract as I prefer Orange (was on them before - better organised, free cust. services, delivery reports, etc). If they're not planning to get their house in order for another year, It's tempting to stay with O2!!
