A BOY of 12 accidentally hanged himself with his school tie after his parents refused to buy him a new mobile phone, an inquest heard yesterday.John Broxham had tried to “frighten” them after they sent him to his bedroom to calm down after a row.
In a temper, he put one end of the tie loosely round his neck and the other around the top rail on his bunk bed.The hearing was told that dad Andrew went to check on him half an hour later and discovered the lad standing “slightly stooped” by the bed.
John had argued with his parents that he wanted a mobile phone “just like his dad’s” and was told to save up for one.Distraught Andrew and mum Michelle, in their 40s, tried to revive him with the help of a 999 operator.
Emergency services were called to the family home in Weymouth, Dorset. Keen swimmer John was flown to hospital in Dorchester but died an hour later.A post-mortem confirmed he died due to hanging.
His parents told police their son sometimes “threw tantrums” but was in a good mood before the row in May.West Dorset coroner Michael Johnston said John tried to give his parents “a nasty fright”.
He added: “It’s dreadful that this happened.”
Verdict: Accidental death.

But at the same time, i think they were right not to spoil him and buy one for him, sad as it is.

Its just an unfortunate accident...you really can't blame the parents or the child involved.

That is scary.
No family deserves to go through that.
Being a parent myself, that has got me worried.

i dont think the child ment to kill himself i think the coroner said it was an accident he just wanted his parents to find him mid way thorugh and give them a scare for not buying him the phone
a tragic case just goes to show what a materialistic society can do to some people

advertising aimed at children is powerful, has anyone seen adverts between cartoons on kids channels? there bombarded with products from a young age.... any thoughts? my thoughts are with the parents.

Instead of giving up he should have earned his phone

Very unfortunate really. But, schoolkids have so much peer pressure these days, to have the best things. I mean, everyone goes through that phase, but still sometimes the pressure is just too much.

Meh,
Rates right up there with the guy who overdosed on a webcam and was ircing with his mates. I feel for the parents but yes you CAN blame the victim in these situations.
It was the kids decision to try and scare his parents, it went wrong. He was stupid to even try to scare them in that way.
Remembering being a shit of a child as well the only time things like that worked was when the parents are around to see it, how is he scaring them in a room when no one else is about. Eesh.
Should the parents have to go through what they are because in the end everyone will boil it down to "Want of a mobile phone" ? No. But lets face it, we have another contender for a darwin award here.

i've no idea what a darwin award is, but a 12 yr old child that aims to manipulate his parents like this has me scared.
The unfortunate outcome is tragic, but my dear god, children have no perception of limits anymore it seems, they totally and utterly do not see consequences of their actions. I was 12 only 14 yrs ago but I feel from a VERY OLD generation now..... when my parents told us 'no' it was final and we simply accepted that and started saving.........
Much seems to have changed in childrens mentality since then.....

these things happen, its sad, but its life.

Darwin awards are given to idiots who kill themselves like, well, idiots. And this kid has my vote, lol!

The phone was a Nokia 7250, he wanted the same model as his dad.

very sad...
how could someone kill them self over a 7250...
I find this extremly...extremistly...sad.

Why? because he was a teenager or less kid, who doesn't know about cell phones, he just saw a cell phone which took pictures, and video and had a radio.

Look, the kid was spoilt and most kids are. The only thing you can do for them is to beat it outta them, not send them to their room. When I was younger, I didn't demand for things. Demanding for things normally gets you nothing. If I wanted something, I'd work for it and I'd get it myself. Hell, he could have worked out some sorta plan with his parents, run their errands, mow the lawn, etc. Parents aren't evil, they would have gotten the phone for the boy eventually.
Sometimes the parents are to blame, and sometimes, the kids are just rotten, all the dicipline in the world isn't going to help them. Let this be a lesson to other kids, don't try anything this stupid again because most of the time, it backfires on you.
