unless you are willing to pay about 30 quid for this it doesnt seem as if they are going to do that for you. from my experience, nobody wants to budge in changing it, not even good old cpw. i sent them an email:

I have just bought a K700i and have noticed a few things that are slightly odd
about it:

1. There are some rather intrusive icons on the standby screen which I would
like to get rid of.

2. In your user guide you give instructions as to how to alter shortcuts. After
following these explicitly I have found that there is no 'shortcuts' option in
the 'settings' menu.

Please could you give me some feedback as to why this is and how to fix it.

they sent this back.

Dear George

Thank you for your mail and informing me you have purchased a K700i and have a
couple queries regarding this phone.

I am sorry to learn that you are unhappy with the icons that appear on the
standby screen.

I have contacted our Ringtones & Logos department who have advised it may be
possible to download an alternative screensaver or logo, which may replace the
ones you currently have.

I have attempted to contact the manufacturer for confirmation on this, but they
are currently unavailable. There contact number if you wish to call them is
08705 237 237 Once connected choose option 2 .

Regarding your comments on the instructions given in the user guide 'how to
alter shortcuts'.

May I offer my apologise and advise you, the user guide for the Sony Ericsson
K700i does contain an error as the 'shortcut' feature is not currently available
on this model of phone.

Since this error has been highlighted, Orange are putting a stop press
announcement in the guidebooks, advising of this error, but it would appear that
you may have received an early version of the guidebook.

Orange Technical Directorate are currently investigating why this menu option
and function was removed and if it will be restored in the near future.

I apologise, I do not have any further details available on this issue at
present.

I trust my response is of assistance to you.

Kind Regards

Sharon

Here's the story...

I phoned Orange about the SMS alert screen not appearing, you just get "message (1)" appear next to the little icon. After a week they agreed to replace the phone. The replacement had the same problem (obviously cos it's Orange's software that knackered it). So, the guy I spoke to as good as admitted that they can't fix it and probably never will, it'll just be put down to an "updated feature". He agreed that it should work so he phone SE for me to see if they could install the original software. They said yes and it's at my nearest store now getting changed...

From the reply from Orange I think their customer support is doing quite good job (at least they try to help and actually read your email)

Orange never replied back to my email! I await with great interest whether Philsmall's to revert is successful!

Got the phone back yet Phil?

I phoned SE yesterday and tried a blag saying that orange had directed me towards them. It looked promising until i found out my nearest service centre was 100 miles away. He then said take it to Carphone Warhousem (in the UK) and they will do a software update for you if you say SE sent you.

Seems a bit dubious to me at best. Se said my second option was to phone the service centre number and arrange to have my phone sent away for an update. I'm wary this though, has anyone else sent their phone away for an update?

So where are the service centres then . Do you know if there's one near Glasgow, Scotland ?

Posted by HP
No idea, the guy was a spanner, he had to get a map to find out where Bristol was!!

Best would be to phone them (the number is on the support area of the website) but be prepared for to give a geography lesson to what ever monkey answers the phone...

HP *pissed off with helpline morons*

i've just called carphone warehouse and they have said they can 'try' to flash it to the latest sont firmware but and i quote "you will lose all the orange stuff" oh deary deary me! what a shame! apparently the t610 wouldnt flash but the p900 does? any ideas? they said the only thing they could do is try

Posted by HP
This is good news. At least they are agreeing to have a go. I couldn't give a monkeys whether i lose the Orange bits!

I will try over th weekend and let you know. Anyone else willing to try.

I spose the worst that could happen is that it deosnt work and there is no change. I suspect that if you manage it and then try to get a repair under warranty and Orange realise you have fiddled the phone they can refuse to repair for free?

I believe there's a CPW service centre in Glasgow so I'll try to give it a go tomorrow (they'll probably be shut , though) . We'll see.

Posted by 5teve
they wont refuse because you have the warranty with SE not with orange. you take it to a SE service centre to get it repaired

Guys don't waste your time I already tried.

You cannot unbrand SE phones by sending them to a service point for a reflash, not anymore at least, the newer versions of the firmware from SE does not allow this, It tells you not allowed, bassicly it checks the firmware and the imei of the phone and says it can't upgrade we will have to wait for a 3rd party sollution to come on the market, even, the new firmwares on t610 and z600 and all upcoming mobiles are like this, My advice to everyone out there would be:

Stop buying branded mobiles from the operators, and let them know you don't like the branding, they will eventually get the idea and stop branding the phones and killing them the way they do.

Where or how can I find a list of Sony Ericsson service centres in the UK?! I have looked through the SE site and it appears to only list service centres for China.

I once remember there being one in Nottingham but I may have dreamt it!

Posted by mwright
There is a CPW in Nottingham (near the Broadmarsh) that is a service centre. That might be the one you are thinking of

Posted by Rob123
@ oozeymc:

Send SE an email and they will send you a list. Be specific about your region though.

Well, I got a call from the SE service centre today saying that the phone won't accept the original software so they couldn't flash the phone. I wasted 240 miles of driving for them to tell me that. I'm less than impressed with this whole sorry affair!! And to top things off I had to log on www.esato.com with my pc cos I can't access esato light on the K700!!! Made a bad day worse.

Long and the short of it is that orange cs have emailed their technical dept again to see if the original software can be put onot the phone some how.

So, does anyone know who to access esato light with the k700??

any joy?

@phil_small
The not logging in thing is apparently be looked at by Laffen... There's quite a few users waiting on this one...

Burgaz

The login problem is now fixed.

Posted by Burgaz
WOO-HOO!!!!!
If only SE listened to it's users like you guys do!!

Posted by Vlammetje
I think the fw restriction is not so much created on the wishes of I suspect it's the actual providers that have the uncontrollable urge to brand phones in the first place. All it really does is create more work for and more aggrevation for the end user

Posted by Burgaz
So why the hell do SE let them do it?? Cos they think they'll sell more phones???
