unless I am missing something it says "Oh no! 404 - page not found"

not what I might expect from a K700 online update page

what did you see before or have you simply pasted an incorrect link?

Posted by Dovern
Sorry, please try again!!! i post the wrong link just now...

Posted by mers
Holy crap, that looks legit! Can someone please try it? I'm at work at the moment.

Thanks for keeping an eye out dovern, no matter how it turns out.

Posted by Dovern
Yes, i was so surprised when i found the link....

well, the problem is.. i dont have the DSS-20 or a DSS-25 desk stand and its required for seld online update.

For people who owned P800 and P900, they should have the stand.. please try it out! Thanks!

Posted by masseur
having done the P900 update a few times it certainly is legit. my sync station is back in UK so I will have to wait until friday night

Posted by Dovern
can i buy the sync station in SE shop?? any idea how much is it?

Posted by JonStatt
I have tried it. I have an unbranded K700 bought from the UK SonyEricsson eshop.

Once connected it switches off the phone and then an error appears and I am not told that my operator does not permit use of the service!!

That can't be right!!

Posted by Gabster
I am going to try it now. I will keep you posted when the thing is sorted!

Posted by Dovern
Thanks Gabster, am very exciting to hear your good news ASAP

Posted by masseur
@JonStatt, thats what my P900 ended up doing after a few updates. SE started using the IMEI to determine the origin of the phone

is your phone branded?

Posted by Vlammetje
aha, that is indeed good to hear! That means we can reasonably expect all future phones running ui rather than symbian may also be home-updated

Come on ....s700!!

Posted by Gabster
Ok I started it up and downloaded the software. It seems all legit, cause like the P900 a java program opens up telling you that the phone will switch off. However after that I get a message saying that there are no service for your provider!?!?! My phone is sim free!. I am going to give it one more go now....

Posted by Gabster
Yep I get the same message again. Maybe there is no update available at the time, but they have set up the service. Sound promising! Can anyone else try it out and see what happens?

Posted by Vlammetje
maybe there is no new fw yet to be upgraded to?

Posted by -utopist-
ik have an K700 here too (netherlands)

trying to get the software, but i have to download the software @ an ashtonishing 0.7 kb/s!!

so, ill tell ya'll next year or so what my findings are.

(in the more likely case scenario i'll probably tell ya sooner... )

(i also own a DSS-20 from my P800)

Ok..I decided to get a Sync Station later, seem like all new and future SE phones can do online firmware update, its worth to buy one.

In case anyone of you dont know what Sync Station is, here are the pictures for you.

DSS-20

DSS-25

Do you think this will work via the USB connection on the S700i?

Um... if only we have this phone model available... i would think so.

Posted by masseur
you can use the DSS-20 and DSS-25 as standard USB cables to transfer data and sync etc and going through the firmware update procedure it specifies that you need one of these in order to do the firmware update and you have to tick a check box confirming you have one connected

@vlam, there is a new firmware R2E011 available in the last few days

lets hope by the time I try this on friday it works

just out of interest, has anyone tried with a K700 from honk kong?

Posted by jakester2000
VERY interesting. I await with great interest, the outcome of this...

Posted by tommo21
It might be that the current FW in the phones doesn't support this yet. Maybe we need a "ordinary" fw-upgrade before this online-service is implemented in the phone. Just a thought, I might be wrong!

Posted by Mrb 18
Do you really have to buy a syncstation, isn't there a way to sync the k700 with a bluetooth dongle to update your firmware?
I just bought my dongle, should have bought a syncstation instead...

Grrrrrrrrrrrr..........

Posted by Vlammetje
Wouldn't that be a lot of backwards reasoning by ?

Nope, that's gotta b the wrong answer.... that just can't be right!

Nope... I'm still going with my first hunch.... online but not 'ready for the end user'

Posted by Dovern
mrb18:

Why can not the device be updated via Bluetooth or Infrared?

The update service updates the entire software, including for instance Bluetooth. This makes it impossible to use Bluetooth or Infrared as media for device software updates.

Posted by mers

1) Assuming this online firmware update thing eventually works ... if I bought an unbranded SE in HK, do i have to keep installing HK firmware versions or can I install any firmware?

2) Does SE provide a changelog of what has been changed in new firmware versions?

Posted by Mrb 18
Just read in SE faq:

The update service updates the entire software, including for instance Bluetooth. This makes it impossible to use Bluetooth or Infrared as media for device software updates.

Gotta by a syncstation then...

You just beat me to it @dovern

It's never really a good idea to upgrade wire-less products via bluetooth or infrared, because it causes to much problems. All wire-less
products need to be upgraded with wire-connections to pc and so on. I know someone who tried upgrading their wireless-lan without connecting it to the pc, and it died on them.

Does anyone know if the Syncstation + update works with an Apple Computer?
I doubt it does, as it isn't listed in the requirements, but just in case it does...

There's plenty of new and unused syncstations Dss-20 and Dss-25 on Ebay. They start at £8.99 and up to £10.99 + p&p!

just a quick question, will i be able to update my K700I with the Desk Speaker Stand CSS-20 along with the USB Cable DCU-1 i have?

Sorry chaps,

But on my SIM FREE Dubai..straight from Sony Ericsson I get at the end an error message telling me that there are no updates for my operator.....you have to run the whole thing in AUTOMODE , unlike the P900 where you do all that manual stuff...I even tried recovery mode but ...same result...guess we just have to wait for it to become PUBLIC....

Regarding the Mac, run Virtual PC. The sync station is USB, I have done similar PC tasks that use I/O and PC drivers, all without hitch. I'm about to order the DSS-25 and try the update this way - I'll post back.

An earlier question that was left unanswered intrigues me (I have a Hong Kong phone, Eng/Asian) - do you have to upgrade to the same firmware or can you select (to change languages)?

My guess is that it's fully auto and SE software selects, but maybe someone can get somewhere with this. I have to send my HK phone for firmware update to change languages, would be great to do that this way.

i finished downloading the pc software, but after i dubbleclick the installer, i get a popup message "your magic key was incorrect, try again with another installer"

tried that too, but gave the same error. so for my its not possible to update it (yet)

Posted by BOOYAR
What about a standard /// usb cable? Also what about with service provider locked phones

Posted by Vlammetje
a standard USB cable to my knowledge is not a synchronizing device, hence I suspect it would not work.

Posted by maddav
^ Is right i believe it doesn't work.

I just downloaded the software for synchronizing and started it...
Starting the update, the message was: "Do NOT remove the device or interrupt the update in any way"
and then, it crashed with the following message: "Error in communication with the device"!

It restarts my K700, so it ask me my PIN...

Too bad! Need some fixes...

Posted by mers

Yeah, stop ignoring my questions.

1) Anyone know if SE HK (or some other region) phones can be firmware updated to any language pack firmware?

2) Does SE publish a changelog on the differences between subsequent firmware versions?

Posted by XavierL
HELP!!!

I tryed the upgrade, and it failed. Now, I cannot access my phonebook anymore... It keep saying "Opening phonebook" for minutes...

What should I do?

Posted by pregor
From the FAQ:
"What should I do if an update fails?
If the device is operational you should perform the update from the beginning. In the unlikely event that the device is non-operational you should perform the update in recovery mode. If the device is still non-operational it should be handed in at your nearest service location. "

I'd guess it's better for to wait for public release. Btw how did Dovern find the link. Lucky guess?

/P

Posted by XavierL
yeah, I think this is much too early... I suppose this is in test. Recovery mode does not work, so I suggest other people do not try to upgrade phone... I will try tomorrow to upgrade or recover again...

Phonebook won't open... >> OK, I restarded the phone, and now it finally works! have been worried!

By the way... When this upgrade service will be working, this is what K700 have been dreaming for... No need to go to service center! Thanks SE

Mers - from the FAQ:

--------------
Can I choose what software to put into my device?

No. The service will automatically identify if your device has operator specific software and make the latest software version approved by your operator available for update.
--------------

Bummer. I think I'll update firmware locally to get the English/French I need and then I can do future upgrades (as/if available) online...

BTW, in the US (California) these guys do firmware for $25 and you can pick what set you want:

http://www.globalmob.com/cart/customer/home.php?cat=55&page=1

Hope that helps!
d.

Posted by Gabster
Guys I really recommend not attempting to upgrade yet, it definatly seems like a test run. Wait for it to be announced and then do it. This is fantasic news, SE has done well. Lets hope they make us happy tomorrow and announce some new phones as well (successor to the P900!?!?)

Posted by jakester2000
Well Im hoping that when its up and running I can de-frazzle the alterations that Orange made to my phone. Pests.

Posted by mers

@dmgoss: I read that too, but it's ambiguous don't you think? HK, Western Europe, etc. aren't "operator specific". I think that "operator specific" bit is to prevent stuff like changing from a locked provider phone to having a sim unlocked phone. Time will tell, though the use of "automatic" doesn't give me much hope.

And as for that place, I don't wanna send my phone all the way to CA! Thanks though.

But as for that last question, someone HAS to know whether SE releases a changelog of the differences between firmware versions! Or have you guys just upgraded your SE phones (everything from a T39 to P900) without knowing what the new firmware did?
