Nationality

Here is one suggestion that I believe all of you will agree.

Even though we have in our profile/preference the option "From" eg. mine is "From: Athens, Greece, Europe, Earth, Universe", I believe it would be nice to add the preference "Nationality" with all countries listed to choose from.

Since the "From" option has been misunderstood from almost everyone of us e.g " From:Home" or "From:A galaxy far away" etc. it will be better and more convinient for all of us to add this "Nationality" feature.

The reason for posting this is that after all this time am here to ESATO, I discovered only today "bacanito" is Greek but he is "From:Canada".

This is not the only case but also during the last two weeks several similar cases caught my attention.

I would like some feedback from all members. Remember we want to make ESATO better and better all the time but is up to Laffen and the ESATO team to make this available.

So please lets share our thoughts here.

i dont really think that this is relavent. we are all the same (apart from what our passports say)

Of course,its a good suggestion.my support to it.its left to esato team.

the problem with profile fields is getting people to fill them in. A large number of profiles I look at have hardly anything filled in

I think the from field we have is sufficient for people who can be bothered to put something there to be as specific or humourous as they care to be although I do understand the occasional confusion of this field that you mention

well said batesie

@ energetic

I'm not greek man lol I live in Montreal Canada, and as you may know, there are a lot of greeks here, picked up several words here and there. But if there were a "Origin" or "Nationality", mine would say Colombia

But it's fun to say greek words from time to time, and it's especially fun looking @ greek girls...very pretty

Posted by TheReverend
Excellent idea as I'm myself such a case!

Posted by stuartdb87
Aye, great idea. I jus put my home town in the 'from' section

Posted by energetic
Now here is another example of confusion with bacanito. So some elements or words made me think he is from Greece but look what happened.

You can all see the confusion here.

@batesie

Am not trying to put any nationality difference issue or anything.

I also know that we are all the same under the same sky and have the same blood colour.

The only reason I suggest this is to keep things in order.

Aye, great idea. I jus put my home town in the 'from' section

Posted by bacanito
energetic has a point...it all depends of how many people actually care to share that information for fellow esatonians (or esatorians? lol)

I, for one, don't mind @ all

Posted by Residentevil
I think it is a good idea, however the current layout is sufficient in my opinion. It all depends on the ppl how much they want to fill out.

Posted by scotsboyuk
In principal it is a good idea, but completely unpractical. The idea of knowing where other members come from is a good one as it would facilitate faster and easier solutions to problems related to specific countries e.g. where to find a service centre, where to find a particular stockist, etc As has been stated most people either don't fill their profiles fully or submit 'humorous' information; even if there were a list of countries to choose from I am sure that some bright sparks would choose a country other than the one they actually live in.
I suppose the nearest we have to targeting country specific issues, at the moment, are the individual threads for specific countries, although as many of you will know, Esatonians not from the country in question often post in that country’s thread anyway.

Posted by bacanito
@scotsboyuk

so true about the threads from specific countries...very little participation in mine from fellow Canadians lol only like 2 or 3 different users!

Posted by BobaFett
@scotsboyuk is on someway right. I would choose sweden...

Posted by scotsboyuk
@bacanito

To be fair the majority of SE users reside outside the North American continent, so one is bound to find mainly Europeans and Asians on Esato.

@bobafett

What are you choosing Sweden for?

Posted by bacanito
@scotsboyuk

Oh, how I would love to change that...there's so much about cellphones and GSM/UMTS that a lot of north americans don't know...The under-development and the fact that SE doens't manufacture CDMA phones also plays a big part...

@energetic - Quite a nice idea you have there ! If only @laffen will be favorable to it I can provide him some Nationality Flags in GIF format that can be placed in our profile box below our 'avatars'. I do have (almost) a complete line of it in my archive . . . .

From:

Australia:

to . . .

Yugoslavia:

I just don't think that we have members here from countries which letters starts with 'Z' - like Zaire and Zimbabwe

Of course this suggestion will just go in vain (as usual) if we are to consider the amount of 'BANDWIDTH' this idea might consume !

Posted by bacanito
@ jojo, can we put them in our signature? If so, hook me up with the Colombian flag

Posted by *Jojo*
@bacanito - My apologies here, but I'm not familiar with the 'hooking-up-signature' thing The only 'hook' thing that I know is that of 'hookers' ! Maybe I can just post it here and see if you can copy it mate.

@moderators - My apologies here (bandwidth issue), but I just cannot upload my GIFs in uploadit.org site - they don't accept, only JPEG/BITMAP formats

Colombia:

Oops . . . I mean this one here :

I hope it's the one you're looking for mate

Posted by bacanito
@ jojo

no no, I meant the first one

But I thought we could put html in our signatures...guess not

Posted by *Jojo*
@bacanito - I guess so to

Posted by BobaFett
@scotsboyuk cos of /// :-D

Posted by scotsboyuk
@jojo

Without wishing to appear churlish I really wouldn't want to display the Union Jack in such a way, banner waving of that kind just isn't the done thing.

Posted by switchbitch
If we ever get flags in our profile, i want the american flag upside down in mine

Posted by Vlammetje
Hmmmm... not seen his thread before but I disagree

Ones nationality does not necessarily say anything about where one LIVES though..... and the place of residence is important in understanding which service provider one uses etcetera etcetera.

I must say that a flag icon added next to our avatar sounds a good idea but like I said is up to Laffen and the ESATO team to decide this.

Even though we have "Regional Forums" I personally hardly visit them. Once in a while yes, but not often.

Posted by scotsboyuk
Displaying flags in such a manner would use more bandwidth for very little benefit.

Posted by energetic
No flags then. I have no problem with that. "Nationality:" will do for me and for others I guess.

Posted by *Jojo*
@scotsboyuk - It's not my fault there mate The strong wind got in the way, and we all know that no one can simply outdo the weather

Posted by switchbitch
jojo what the hell are you talking about?

(Off topic)

No need to curse! Yellow card...

@jojo

I will repeat the earlier question in a more polite fashion; what were you on about?

Posted by *Jojo*
@switchbitch & @sctosboyuk - Well, to be honest, I just don't quite understand @scotsboyuk's post back there as well Looks like he don't like the 'Union Jack Flag' seeing 'W A V I N G', so I presumed that the 'strong wind' is the one responsible in it's movement - hypothetical answer though .. .

@switchbitch - Better ask @scotsboyuk 1st why he doesn't want to see the Australian Flag waving back there . . .Hmmm, Isn't it that the Unioin Jack Flag is that of the Great Britain

Great Britain:

Posted by scotsboyuk
@jojo

The reason I am against displaying the Union Flag in my profile is because it isn't a very British thing to do, there is no need for overt displays of nationalism like that. I know that in some countries it is fashionable or patriotic to wear lapel badges of that country's flag, but it just isn't a British trait to display flags for no reason. I'm British, but I don't feel the need to advertise that fact.
I have nothing against the Australian flag and I don't recall mentioning the Australian flag in this thread, but you are correct in saying that it does contain a Union Jack, as do the flags of many other countries.
I hope this clarifies things somewhat.

I feel a disturbance in the Force

Posted by *Jojo*
@scotsboyuk - OK! Now I fully understand Here in my country, we are just too proud displaying our national flag, almost anywhere deemed possible Barriers of cultures perhaps got in the way with our last posts mate All is well now . . .

Posted by scotsboyuk
@jojo

No problem at all old boy. If there was an option to play a tune in your profile, then that would be different, a small amount of flag waving is permissible when a tune is playing.

Posted by *Jojo*
@scotsboyuk -

Sometimes . . .saying good words can also be offending . . . to some !

Posted by scotsboyuk
@jojo

I'm sorry, but you've lost me.

Posted by bacanito
I have to agree with scotsboy on this one...

Posted by Residentevil
I don't think this thread is going anywhere.

Posted by scotsboyuk
Was it ever?

Why not allow you to customise the screen on the little phone pic. I'd rather have black and white stripes than that the clipper ship

Howay the Lads!

here's an idea that could make a couple of people happy....why not allow the pic inside the phone (avatar) customizable with a flag?

Hey, I tried

Posted by purge
Not a good idea to show the Union Jack instead of the Saltire on a phone in Scotland.

You'll get beaten up for sure by the Locals.

Posted by scotsboyuk
@purge

Hardly, I think your being somewhat melodramatic. The Union Flag has its place just as the Saltire does and the Cross of St George and the other various flags.
Most people I know have little against the Union Jack being displayed.

Posted by mince-inside
@purge we are talking about the virtual world of Esato not the real world ie I agree the union jack would not go down well outside Park Head

Posted by gareb
Does it really matter?Here we're talkin' bout cellphones right?
