@residentevil - you're probably right! It's probably one quite dodgy legal ground.
That's one thing I've found as well, that you really need to be in the top two or you don't stand a chance. And I bet the owners of these site know this, and accidentally on purpose don't update the new lists for a day or two so that people rush to sign on thinking they'll be at the top!
I could self-refer but going on 5-6 other lists, but I don't want to throw any more money at this little venture, or give this guy (girl?) any more money to go on holidays!

any progress? ETA of phone???

Sam gave me the site and i just checked. 1 person is awaiting dispatch so hes 11th now and one more person has just signed up...
It suppose the fone will get to him about the time the P5000 is released

@bman -
Sorry, haven't given a little update yet - One person has indeed had his K700 shipped (supposedly, anyway!), but I very much doubt that another 175 odd people are going join before this website 'dissapears' or they discontinue the K700, whichever comes first.
I have in fact now bought a K700 off Ebay (using funds from selling all the phones I've either fixed, or was unable to fix, and as an incentive to stop buying more phones off Ebay!!), which will arrive on Tuesday with any luck.
Wasn't expecting to win that auction (but happy I have), so will have to do more selling pdq!!

are you allowed to change the phone you want?
Posted by 50Cent
nope. to put it simply
Posted by dhallug
OP, did you invest £20 in one of those pyramid schemes or the newer straight line systems (usually found on ebay)?
The pyramid schemes are illegal and the newer versions are not.
The difference between the two...in the latter one you are buying an item from the company and not a place on their lists or phone.
The chances of getting a phone are slim unless
1) you are closer to the top
2) u make a lot of referrels
3) depends on which website u signed up
most of them have no intentions whatsoever to distribute the free gifts and I would stay clear of them. To my knowledge there are only 2 companies that are approved by the OFT and have been trading for years.
I would generally stay clear fo the rest. Some do rip you off.
Posted by Elrond
@dhallug And can you write links to the 2 companies?
Posted by Sammy_boy
I think it's a stright line system - I got a signal booster (which are 10 a penny!) and an CD with some Ebooks on (which I still haven't looked at!). The phone is a 'free gift'.
Been as I'm still 11th in the list, I gave up on any hope of seeing the phone straight off - but I did this partly though curiosity at these schemes, and partly because I'd like on of those phones!
I did ask for my money back and cancelling my 'order' a day or two after paying the site organiser, but heard nothing from him, and still got put on the list and recieved the booster and Ebooks. He either didn't get my email or chose not to reply to it. And I'm certainly not putting any more money into it!
It's reaffirmed what I really thought about these schemes - they're on dodgy legal ground, makes the organiser a shedload of money, and very few people who sign on to those things see their 'free gift'.

@Sam sooo true. i also registered at another site for an s700. it had about 150 people and required 30 people to sign up before u got your fone! thats 150 X 30 = 4500 people!!! so i decided not to send the money to them in the end. by the time i got the fone, it would probably be worth less than the 20 pounds i payed 4 it in the start!! unless you get on the list 1st or 2nd or 3rd or 4th or 5th you have no chance whatsoever! but the 1st person is soooo lucky. he signed up and 3 days later he got the fone! So i guess you have to keep sittin at your computer screen 24/7 clicking the refresh button over and over and over again untill a new fon is added and then sign up 4 it
Posted by 50Cent
the ones that have no intention of sending any phones cant really be taken to court because ur £20 was for the CD, not the phone u were never destined to recieve
I was tempted but the lists were too full to even give it a go.

@bman- yes, that's the only surefire way to get to the top of one of those lists - whenever new phones appeared on that site, it was often at least a day before people were added to it - perhaps so that folk would all sign up quick thinking they may be the first.
You do appear to be at the mercies of these guys as well considering the phone is considered a 'free gift', so they can be quite within their rights to stop shipping phones to people if they've had enough (or made enough!)
And besides, once a list was getting near full, and say that you were next in line to recieve a phone, there's nothing to stop someone self-referring so that they jump you in the queue and recieve the phone next - kind of like last minute 'sniping' in Ebay auctions!
Posted by dhallug
sammiboy, you can indeed cancel your order within 7 days of order. Its against the law if they don't. All internet orders are subject to a minimum of 7 day return policy whereby u are entitled to your money back.
I cant remember the name of the other guy, who asked can u write links of the 2 company. U want to know their web address?

Absolutely.

@dhallug - thanks for the info
Posted by mswallis
@thebman919 Why you would sign up for a phone that is not even released yet i don't understand. Because the first person on the list would not receive theirs until it was released!
Posted by thebman919
coz ull be the first to get it when its released...

Like I will be when i get my S700 through
I might have to pay some extra money to it since I'm swapping it and thats not what I was supposed to get or I may combine to lists I have cycled in and just try get the spare money sent to me. Will just have to wait and see.

its been like 3 months.... any news
Posted by Sammy_boy
Since my last update on the 15th August, only TWO people have joined my list!!
The person at the top of the list (apparently) has had his K700 sent out, so there are now only (!) 11 people ahead of me in the queue, and the next person in line to recieve their K700 has 3 people on it. Therefore, another 272 people need to join before I would get my phone.
I can pretty safely say that I won't be recieving my 'free gift'!
And another little point I've just thought of. I have no idea who or where the people who set this site (and many like them) have come from, so who knows if they are giving/selling all my details like email address, etc. to spammers and junk mailers?

the p1010 will be out when u get it
Posted by 50Cent
dont u mean P2020
Posted by Sammy_boy
What do you mean WHEN I get it!?
I doubt very much IF I'll get it!
Posted by BOSSHOGG
Nice of you to go to the personal expense for the masses and keep reporting on it. So 3 months and still no phone...
Posted by lordmat
Twista yes maybe in 10 years
Posted by Sammy_boy
I thought I'd update you, except I've got absolutely nothing to update!! Absolutely no-one has joined the list, and the one person that should have recieved his k700 looks like he may not have got it at all - the website still says 'awaiting shipment'.
I hope that my £20 has been a cautionary tale for others - and that it has helped a few people come to the right decision about these sites.
Think it's best to save your money up and just buy the phone imho.
Posted by Sammy_boy
A bit of a late update, but here goes!
I checked the site I'd 'signed up' to recently, just out of interest, and lo and behold, the K700i list had been removed! It said somewhere in the small print that they were within their rights to stop a list if and when they wanted to, and those who have paid don't get a refund, as they were 'paying' for the signal booster and the ebooks on CD.
It seems that people that sign up to these things have no rights at all with regards to the 'free gift' phone, as you have legally bought that signal booster and CD
I hope my experiences have help people make up their minds about these kind of pyramid sites, i.e. don't bother, save your money and simply buy a phone, much simpler, easier and you get your phone quicker, there's no such thing as a free (or cheap) lunch

These sites do work if you sign up as soon as a list comes on and if its a site where hundreds sign up, theres only one site left that cycles well.
i've got the following phones each brand new and for £20 , nokia 6820, 7610, v3 razr, d500, another d500 and getting a w800i as soon as the site has stock of them
Posted by solidsingh
im definitely signing up to one of these sites now that ive speaken to max
Posted by Sammy_boy
I still think it's a big gamble - if you're not either first or maybe second in one of these lists you stand little chance of getting on it. And how often do the owners of the site update their lists - e.g. you see a 'new' list with no names on it, but is that because it hasn't been updated in a couple of days? And when it is updated you find yourself 5th or 6th in the list with almost no chance of getting your phone?
There's too much uncertainty in these things, the only way I can see of almost guaranteeing sucess is if you sit on one of these sites all day refreshing your browser in the hope that a new list pops up and you can get your name down ASAP. Even then you're not guaranteed, as many sites I believe let people put themselves on the list a as many times as they like paying another £20 or so and referring themselves, so they in effect 'jump the queue'.
And besides, they're on dubious legal ground!
Posted by nessaizfit
I was going to sign up on one of these, having read this, i wont now l
Posted by Sammy_boy
Good plan Ness!
Although it is possible to get a phone though these schemes, imho it's too hit and miss to waste your money on - I bet there are a few failed attempts for each sucessful £20 phone, and the people that run these sites make an obscene amount of money out of their little scheme!
Posted by amnesia
and what site did you go with Copper
?
Posted by max99
personally i find it a no win no loss situation, with the site i sign up to , pm me if you want it, it offers refunds up to 7 days after order, so if you not happy get refund, and it tells you what time the phone will be added so u just have to sit refresh for an hour, which isn't long to get a phone worth like £250 for £20 is it ?
also if you pm me i will tell ya the technique to use and programs for quick refreshing and form filling,
Posted by haynesycop
all the sites i signed up to are non exsistent now
i got a 15gb ipod, 2 p900's and £500 cash
so they do work and max is right there is only one decent site left the rest have died a death

These sites definately work!
I use the same site as Max and so far have had a Silver RAZR V3 and also a Black RAZR V3.
I should be getting a W800i to like Max!
I agree for over 90% of people these sites are a complete waste of time. But if you know what you are doing they are fantastic.
On the site I use up to 50 people get phones on each list, some lists now have up to ten thousand people on them!
PM me for info on the site and on how to get phones!
Posted by max99
more like 95% don't get phones, but as tom said it does work and if you choose to sign up and are not happy you can get refund.
if you choose to sign up when new phone is added just pm me and you can use my referall code which wont affect your order at all .
