Final information on Outlook-Sync problems:

Just for fun, I tried the the old XTNDConnectPC-software that came with the T610 (!). Guess what - sync works without a problem. Of course some of the new fields in the k700i are not supported but everything else gets transferred properly.

Baseline: I tested synchronisation with Outlook on W2k via Bluetooth-AND IR connection on 2 different PCs, with both a Belkin USB BT-dongle and a Logitech BT hub, with all firewalls off/on and with McAfee and Norton AntiVirus off/on. The phone gets recognized and connected, but using the SW that comes with the phone (SE SnycStation), it never worked.

Using the same configurations but the old XTNDConnectPC software, everything worked. For me it's clear now that the current version of the SE software sucks.

I got the K700i for only 7 hours and these are my first impressions:

1. Really nice screen. Bright and clear. Nice animated background, too.
2. I'm a little put off with the cover for the charging port but it does make the K700 look better.
3. I'm a concerned with the keys and how easily it might be scratched.
4. The T610 looks more professional than this one but I'm not complaining.
5. I like having MP3s as my ringtone. Disappointed with not being able to customize the message tone but I already knew about it so it's ok. Ring is also louder than the T610. I like.
6. I hold the K700 differently from the T610. I still haven't discern how it is. i think it'll take me some time to get use to it. I feel the K700 is faaaat.
7. Flawless connection via Bluetooth using Float's Mobile Agent and BluePhoneMenu for Mac.
8. SE finally allows me to customize the shortcuts on the joystick. No more annoying SE homepage.
9. How come SE insists on limiting users in finding an entry in the phonebook. This is my biggest gripe!
10. Menu structure has changed and I have yet to look around it.
11. Too bad SE didn't put an aluminum finish on the K700i. It would have looked sooooo fine.
12. There's no minute reminder for calls. I don't know why they removed it.
13. SMS is much much much faster than the T610. So's the menu.

Haven't tried the camera yet and I haven't encountered problems with the #2 key. I still have to play with the phone so I can make sure nothing is wrong with it. I have to review the complaints some had with their units.

I'll update this as soon as I am able.

Outlook sync-issue seems resolved. I installed Sync Station 1.2.9.1b which was put on the Web yesterday and suddenly everything worked.

Conclusion: wait 2 or 3 months before buying a brand new SE product.

Hi I've just got this phone a couple of days and these are my first impressions. However since this thread is heavily populated by ppl that love the phone and are SE fans I thought I'd balance things out a bit.

Comparing this to a Nokia this phone is well ahead with technology, the connectivity, the camera quality (keep reading), the animated wallpapers, its aesthetics and loads more...but what this phones lacks in my opinion is its ergonomics. To highlight the difference:

Phone Call
------

i) In general pretty much superb, good volume etc. The only thing I didn¡¦t like is that it doesn't retain a missed call time on the miss called tab¡Konly on the all type of calls tab.

Messaging
----------

i) The keyboard is for left handed users...the space key is on the # key so it makes it awkward for a right handed user to use

ii) The t9 on it is a bit hard to get used to¡Kthe "spell" feature is outside of the selections list and selected with the joystick. Also when you do select spell¡Kit comes up with the current "wrong" word so you have to delete it first to add. Furthermore to add a symbol you need to go through a menu to select a symbol, not just hold down a button. What is cool however is that it has picture smileys...hidden ones on this phone too! It also has groovy emoticons

Phonebook
----------

The most important thing of a phone is its ability to act as a phone. The phonebook in my opinion isn't designed very well.
i) Firstly you can't search a whole name as you can on a Nokia. So if you have a lot of contacts then it¡¦s really hard to find the user.

ii) It only has a 512 capacity even though having a 41mb memory and it only allows either the sim contacts or phone contacts to be view at one time can't at the same time. However I guess the last sent sms numbers compensates slightly...

iii) The Options and new contacts menu is situated within the phonebook itself unlike a Nokia has its own outside options (Just a difference that you need to get used to)

iv) The multiple number entries into the phonebook do not allow you to have more than one type of a number eg. When you add a number it will let you choose home, mobile, work, fax or other. Once you have already stored a mobile number it will not allow you to store the next number as a mobile. What is cool though is you don¡¦t need to go into the contact itself you select a number you can left/right select it from the phonebook itself.

Calendar
----------

i) From what I can see you can only add appointments to a date. On a Nokia you can select from a range of ¡§notes¡¨ eg. Meeting, Call, Birthday, memo etc However I¡¦ve seen on the T610 there was an option to do this¡K

Menu
-------

i) It¡¦s not as smooth as everyone says it is >.<

Additional
---------

i) The night mode sucks! In full daylight the camera rocks...but when things get slightly dim the camera is atrocious. Very grainy...even the LED light helps just slightly. I think my old 7250i can do better.

ii) A thing everyone says¡Kbut actually I don¡¦t agree is the ¡§no expansion slot¡¨¡Kit¡¦s a phone¡Kgo get an mp3 player or a proper camera!

But that at the moment is actually it...This might just be a "I hate the phone" opinion..but actually i love it..i just thought that it'll be better to have a review that highlights some of the bad points and not just lots and lots of praise! Hope SE fans don't hit me!

Ps. Please correct me if any of this is wrong I haven't completely figured out the phone yet

I thought I'd post my review of the K700i now I've got round to doing it, I am only 13 so be nice, and If I find my review anywhere on the internet other than here, i will take legal action!

here we go, enjoy!

The K700i is a brilliant phone, it has loads of features, 0.3Megapixel camera, Best Screen available, MP3 player, 41MB, Mpeg4 player, just to list a few. It is a great phone, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a phone of great quality, with loads of features, but still good enough size and weight, read on to find out more about this fabulous phone.

Ease of Use
=========

As with Any Sony Ericsson the K700i is extremely easy to use, it combines great robust buttons, with a highly refined joystick, and two customisable soft keys. Also there is instant access to the Internet with a button on the side, and instant access to the camera on the other, there is also the volume buttons below. All the buttons are crafted very well, with high quality plastic, making them a joy to use. The keypad buttons are kind of see-through, and the soft keys are frosted. The on/off key is easy to use as well.

The phone itself is easy to use once you’re on; its menus are very simple, resembling those of most previous Sony Ericsson’s. The menu is fast, a huge improvement over my old T610, and so is the texting. The sub menus are also very easy to use with a new tabs system, resembling that of the P800/900/910, which is great and cuts down the sizes of the menu that is great.

Other features of the phone are very good too, the camera is very simple, using a point to shoot system, and as soon as you’ve taken your photo you have the possibility to send it straight away, via Bluetooth, E-Mail, IrDa, (infrared), or MMS, (Multi-Media-Messaging). The camera is also useable in dark with its built in light, (which is powerful enough to use as a torch as well. The screen is exceptionally easy to use; it has a TFT screen with a display size of 176x220. Which is a brilliant resolution for a screen the size of the T610’s. Overall the K700i is extremely easy to use.

Look and Feel
===========

This phone feels great when you put it in your hand; it is very solid, yet still very light. It is made of plastic, but the back of the phone feels, like a highly refined piece of aluminium. The buttons are soft, and never hurt your thumbs in a sudden text conversation. The cover and surrounds of the screen are smooth, and well made. The joystick has been in the making with Sony Ericsson’s for a long time now, which means that the pointer on the K700i is highly refined, and of great quality, it is astounding.

The phone also looks very nice. In all the pictures you see of it, you are only getting the stupid top down view, which is a pretty bad picture, so I’ve attached, a few pictures I’ve taken, at the bottom, for you to see the look of the phone, from other angles. Anyway, the phone looks great, it has an instant, “Wow,” factor, which is great if you like people to know you have a great phone. It has a lovely, grey colour on the back, and sliver-ish on the front, with a kind of raw metal frame around the screen. (Now sorry, but I’m not very good at describing, and it is A lot, I mean A LOT, nicer than I describe it). Anyway, the size is also great; for the amount of features it is very small. So overall, this phone is great looking, and feeling, a huge pro for this great phone.

Durability and Robustness
===================

There is not that much to say here, I haven’t dropped my phone too many times, but for the few I have, they’ve always been on hard surfaces, and, its fine, not even a scratch, nothing wrong at all. It is extremely strong for the plastic body it is made from. And also, just from putting it down on a table and moving it around, you don’t get a mark, whereas with some of Nokia’s ‘cheap,’ ‘Fascias,’ they scratch away the paint within a few weeks! There is also a rubber cover over the connectors on the bottom of the phone, of which I think is a great addition. Overall, the durability, and robustness of this phone are great, highly commended.

Reception Quality
==============

The reception quality is once again very good, for an internal antenna, it has great results, it provides a very, ‘alive,’ coverage of signal using the display, (by that I mean that it tells you constantly every millisecond the quality of signal, whereas in the lower down Nokia’s theirs seems to change every second. It also sucks the entire signal it can for you, so that you have the best quality. And the GPRS antenna does very well indeed also, it has full signal nearly constantly. But if you live in a horrific signal area, on the back of the phone there is a small hole, and to this you can attach any number of external antennas. Overall the signal quality is outstanding.

Battery Performance
===============

Here we come to a section, that isn’t that good, now before you go on, don’t skip this part after the first few lines, because it ends happily. Okay then, the K700i has a new Sony Ericsson battery, the BST-35, which is a great battery, but the standard firmware, (software), that comes with the K700i is very buggy, and one of the bugs, are that the battery meter displays the wrong amount of battery power remaining which in turn leaves you with a lot less battery life, most people will be saying across the world that the K700i battery is appalling, but with a simple firmware upgrade, that is free in almost any store, (so don’t pay for it!). The new firmware fixes 90% of all bugs, including the battery meter bug, giving you about a week and a bit of battery life, (much better!). Overall the battery life can be great, you just have to know what to do!

Value for Money
=============

This phone isn’t cheap when sim-free, (£249.99), but if you know the best way to do it, it can be very cheap. Okay, I wouldn’t buy it sim-free if I were you, the best way to do it, is to get it as an upgrade, or on contract, I got it as an upgrade, to my ageing T610, and I only had to pay a miniature, £20, which is great. I am very glad about that! So to you, the buyer, I highly recommend, that you either upgrade your existing handset, (if you’re on contract), or if you aren’t then I highly recommend that you switch to contract, and bother the company for it free, or you could get it for what they are asking, which will always be cheap. Overall, the phone can be extremely cheap!

Range of Features
=============

Well, the range of features on this phone is outstanding, I’ll start by listing a few off my head, MP3 Player, FM Radio, VGA Camera, with video, 41MB of memory, organizer, 3D Java graphics engine, greatly organised phonebook, T9, Long-Text, E-Mail, wap and web, GPRS, Bluetooth, IrDa, Super high quality TFT screen, lightweight, File manager, and many, many more. This phone has the most amazing amount of features, and this is without consuming any of the illustrious 41mb of memory!

Now then, this phone has the range of features to suit anyone, the MP3 player, and FM Radio, come out of the high quality speaker on the K700i, or through the outstanding handsfree kit included. And the new graphics engine is superb; it can play ludicrously high quality 3D games with ease. Overall the range of features is outstanding, I can’t list them all right now!

-------------------------

Overall I recommend this phone to anyone, who loves his or her phones, this one is of such high quality, it is outstanding. Highly recommended to anyone!

**WARNING**
=============

This phone is normally supplied with a firmware titled R2A, which is bug-full; it decreases battery life, and numerous other things. Although the K700i is starting to be supplied with the new firmware, (R2L), there are still some with the old. So, I recommend you take your phone to the local phone shop, or CPW, (Car Phone Warehouse), or you service provider, (not recommended, but still possible), and ask for your phone, to be ‘flashed, or upgraded’ to the new firmware, R2L.

So,

New: R2L
Old: R2A/E

To see what firmware your K700i has, go to your main screen and quickly press, >*<<*<<*, (where < and > mean the movement of the joystick), then go to information, and software information, to see somewhere in there it will say either, R2A, R2E, or R2L.

Thanks, for reading, please rate, and I love to hear comments!

my K700i not mine

Posted by masseur
nearly 3 months after getting my first K700 and starting this review thread I bought a second one on Friday, this time a UK model and had both K700s updated to R2L at the same time.

the original one certainly has become creaky and I have happily lived with some of the quirks in the firmware, but I am happy to report that the new model with the new firmware now seems better than ever. The automatic phone lock works, the accepted caller list is no longer lost when the phone is powered off and on, the 2 key doesn't stick etc etc

In summary, after 3 months of using the K700 I am as happy today as the first day I took it out of the box. My 14 year old son is also happy now as he has given me his old T610 in exchange for my old K700 and within 2 hours had figured out all its new functions and filled up most of the memory with his favourite MP3s, themes (from esato) and other stuff!

Hi Everyone,

Just got a K700i !

Let me clear up somethings which i found misleading(well not excatly misleading but something i thought everyone ought to know which are not in other reviews) in some reviews i read -

Pros of k700 -

1.Pictures are awesome if taken properly(without shaking, with right resolution )
2.Display can be seen clearly even under DIRECT sunlight in mine.
3. Blah blah ....... all you've read on other reviews.

Now some problems I faced -

1. Extremely poor battery life
With 20 minutes of bluetooth use,and around 4-5 hours of camera and video , battery is completely drained !
I mean c'mon when you put such advanced features it makes sense to put a stronger powerful longer lasting battery. Personally i think if they put the T610 battery itself, it would have been better.
Even with some 30 min of battery left when i took a photo with frame effect, the phone just shut down !

2. Video
Nothing serious but your hand has to stable while taking video or it comes out a bit garbled(especially when the object is closer to the camera). Also sound recorded has very low volume and cannot be heard during playback in noisy areas.

3. Sound
I know everyone else is saying it has a loud speaker volume but from my experience i found the T610 to have higher volume than K700. In somewhat noisy areas ( classrooms ) you cannot hear the sound more than an arms length away. ( Of course when some really strict professor is there giving an important lecture, the speaker just blasts away getting you into deep trouble )
One more thing - equalizer for mp3 - Dont expect too much. The difference is very slight and sometimes not noticeable.

4. Limited memory
No expansion slot but hey i'm not complaining. 41 MB is way enough for me.

5. WAP
Browsing is fast enough but i'm having problems downloading. it downloads 20 - 30 KB FAST and then error occurs ( INDIAN USERS please note !!). I dont think this is a problem with the set most probably with my service provider.

6. Menu speed
Menu is absolutely awesome with the animation and all. But i've noticed that when the battery is low, it(the menu) slows down and takes long time to open up and it gets irritating sometimes.

The problem of 2 key getting stuck is true but ABSOLUTELY NO CAUSE for concern. my 2 key got stuck but i didn't notice it for some time and it did NOT affect any options or functionality.

7. FM
FM radio has higher volume than the ringtones. Easily audible but like all other sets you have to connect the headset. i think it would receive the signal even without headset. (i'm planning to try that out)

Final Rating - 9/10

Rating reduced by 1 ? why ? Because of the battery life.
My battery is 670 mAH so i dont know bout the 700 mAH battery which comes with most sets.Somebody please comment on this.

My final opinion on the the phone ?

BUY IT , YOU CANT GET A BETTER PHONE THAN THIS unless of course your willing to spend a few hundred bucks more.

PS. - one more thing if anybody who has this phone has upgraded the firmware , PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me how much the battery life has improved.

Posted by koljaho
I just bought my k700i too. The firmware is R2L001 and it comes with a 700mah battery. It rox man. I use the phone non-stop and it only drains out after 1 and half day. But the camera is quite disappointing. I don't know why there are pink patches around the screen and the shots taken have so much noise. Please assist me.

Posted by k4m!k4ze
well my battery is only 670 mAH and if i use it other than for games, it lasts one day ! maybe less !

The dots cant be helped , it occurs for everyone, You need proper lighting to get rid of them.

In night mode, smaller picture size helps to reduce the dots.

About the pink patches - post a pic with them. It happens occasionally with mine but thats only when i'm taking pictures near my PC or in the presence of fluorecent bulbs. Occasionally only !

I have been a regular visitor of this place easto just because of SE phones,, i had SE 610, SE 630, SE t68i, and Erc t29. I really loved these phones, i used to be proud of my SEs,, and i tell u after buying SE k700i i was feeling on the top of the world, brilliant screen, very good resolution, very good signal strength( I can judge it cuz most of the times i am working at places which are on the fringes of GSM coverage) exceptional speaker quality, very good mp3 player, considerably good FM radio and a nice clean camera. I am person who really expact a lot from cell phones have been using 6600, v200 and stuff for camera as t610 and t630 were not upto the mark as the camera is concerned but k700i has really proven upto the mark i dont miss the picture quality of 6600 or for that matter any other phone, the added light(flash light) is another brilliant edition. i used k700i for about two months, i tell u guys the menu speed is very impressive and the user interface is also very friendly ( i really dont know why some of the people are complaining about slow menu), coming to the battery life,, okie i agree its comparetively less but guys if u dont press the buttons a lot,, and dont use the phone as a camera or dedicated mp3 player it gives u a good backup time, besides i have personally checked the talk time it was about three hours(practical). i dont think so that someone would be using it for this long. Anyways, SE k700i beats all standard phones in almost all aspects but only one thing maade me change the phone after about two months pleasured usage that was 41MB...... i could not increase it as it does not give u any provision for increasing the memory by external mmc. Any ways, i am using Nokia 6230 now its also a very good phone but i tell u SE k700i beats nokia 6230 in screen quality and signal strength, rest of the things are almost the same,, apart from a big advantage of external memory. SE people,, can u please roll out K710i with external memory and with buttons like t610.. i tell u u people can rock the world.

Okie, i am replying kllr-dude..........
Batt Life:-

If the phone is used for the purpose of making calls, recieving them, messages and stuff like this believe me the batt is not going to disappoint you, when i was buying the k700i many of my mates asked me to change the decision but as i fell in love with the phone i did not listen to them, i bought it and i tell you i really scrolled the phone from A to Z. The used to put on music(mp3) with the camera on and the flash light operating, and i used to put it on my bed just to check the batt life. Believ me the batt is exceptionally good. A colour phone, with camera, mp3, bright screen, light and radio cant deliver a better batt life i m using nokia 6230, the batt life is more than k700i but u see the screen size is small, there isnt any flash light, the screen is not that bright as well. so its almost the same.

coming towards the software upgradation,,

well i manually upgraded the software from the older version to r2l. the batt life got better may be the difference was of 20% but not more than 25%. but a few added features were a good thing to have( selection of sms and stuff) the phone got a little faster though it was never slow but still it got faster.

So, mr dude, i think SE k700i is a brilliant phone, i am using nokia 6230 but i still miss my k700i (At one time i thought of keeping both but was not possible cuz for couple of days i had both the phones with me and i tell u i was using k700i where as nokia6600 used to enjoy holidays!)

the only problem with k700i is of no extra memory facility. thats it
and thats the only reason i switched over to nokia 6230.

@efamm - Welcome to Esato

The battery life is poor because of the mAH value - only 670 mAH (mine) whereas phones on the same level with the K700 have a higher value (T610 has 770 mAH) and also because of the LCD screen which consumes a lot of power.

when i wrote that mini review i had just bought my K700 so the battery had not reached full capacity . I'm getting more time with the battery now.

by the way i wrote that review last month and now i have upgraded my f/w too .

I also mentioned in the last few lines that K700 is the best . Thanks for replying anyway.

Posted by omardeneo
I used the phone now for 1 month
many of my friends told me not to get it due to battery life

ok now my battery is 700 mAh it looks bad during the first week but if you keep recharge only when your battery is totally empty it will work better

I'm using the phone with bluetooth HBH-200 and the phone give me total 2 days and half with too much talking and some playing with the cam and radio but not too much maybe 30 min per day

I used before t610, t630, z600 and p800 (i hate it)
the k700i is not the best when we talk about the battery and the phone featuresit's deserve better one but it's ok I can forgive this.

the phone today became my close friend when I used the back light to reach my apartment in 11th floor after the electricity was cut and had to use the stairs (too much dark)

I'm using 2 phones now the k700i and I-mate smartphone 3 (sp3) I know both are totally different and SP3 is more expensive than k700i but when comparing the 1050 mAh of the SP3 which I have to recharge every day with no bluetooth use at all and no FM with the 700 mAh of the k700i i think I can say the k700i one of the best phones available now

masseur,
What are the video filetypes supported by k700i? also audio filetypes?
i am finding it a little difficult, while using the wap browser... as i cant go to the main menu while working on net
Also, while using radio, if u browse, lot of noise starts and also few radio features are not good- changing the channel is only possible thro the handset not by the handsfree, reception quality is not always good when compared to a good radio-handset.
But still it is a very good phone. giving "turn on silent mode" in # key is a good idea.
Can u tell me, how this phone ranks when compared to nokia 6600?
One feature i can tell is the extendable memory.
Thanks
Shyam

I've had my k700i for two months now and I need to charge it just about once a day. At first I found it quite annoying, but hey, I use it alot but not when I sleep!
Does anyone know if charging while the phone is turned on could be better/more efficient? The display reads something like "optimal charging" if the phone is turned on...
At the present time I just have one thing that's a bit disturbing. I use the headset listening to radio alot (maybe the best feature on a phone!) then I get a call, the radio quiets but no "call sound" in he headphones. (Ok, you know somethings up when the music stops but still...) I keep the phone in my inner jacket pocket and when opperating a call the keypad lock is turned off! This has resulted in about 20 blank sms's to the poor guy who's first in my contacts list. This becouse the joystick sticks out a bit and pressed a couple off times, this is what happens!
I got around this by creating a new contact called "A" with the phonenumber "0". I just hope my operator does not charge for sms's sent to an invalid number.

Also I would very much like to get some help on this one!

Congratulations on your new K700i dude! But it looks like you got an old unit, one of the earlier releases (no. 2 button getting stuck) with old firmware (poor battery life). By all means, get a firmware upgrade! Mine is R2L001 and I don't have the problems you mentioned - menu slowing down when batt is low, etc.

@786, you mean the rubber thing opposite the flash?
Thats to add balance.
It helps the phone attain Nirvana.

Nothing there...check out one of the threads where they take the phone apart... I'm sure you can see there...
Sorry if I'm wrong though.

That rubber thingy hides the outlet where u can connect an external antenna for better reception...........

Hello to all...

I'm very interested in buying this sweet looking phone, but as I read threads one thing is bothering me, most of complains at k700 was pointed at battery life.

My question is: are there any differences in battery life using newest software [R2AE033], and what's the gain of it [in hours or days].

If i missed that thread where's explained difference with new firmware, please post link to that thread, because I couldn't find any.

Thanks!

Hi people , my turn now!!

Review of k700i ( no piccys sorry!)

Section 1: screen ****
WOW! everyone who has got a k700 will brag about its amazing screen! Its so bright and colourful. 65k colours will bring the pictures up amazing. The only thing that made it **** and not ***** is it smudges so easily, im cleaning it constantly and its quite easy to scratch, but its sooo bright!

Section 2: Sound *****
The sound is very crisp and clear, you hear mp3 like its out of a cd, but it could be louder.... compare it to 7600 though, nokia 7600 is like a mouse! Games sound good. Nothing else to say really.

Section 3: Camera ****
The camera is great "phone meets camera" , but dosent meet video camera yet though! Its very pixelated, but its a phone in the end. Switch it to small video size helps a little, but at least it has the option to record. The pictures are great and can capture fast moving objects, my skating pictures taken with k700 capture the moment with no noise or bluring. (ive got a great one to show when i can transfer!)

Section 4: Themes ****
Not much to say, great themes , but all animated, so that probably drains battery life.

Section 5: battery life ***
Most people read that it is awful. Dont beleive it. It isnt THAT bad, but it could be better, with mild use i can get 3 days out of it.Batery is small and is 700mAh.

Section 6: Design *****
Great design, looks like a camera and brushed finish is nice, buttons arent that small. Look at nokia with there camera, wow. a ring around it. is so much better design.

Section 7:radio ****
Good radio, shame you need the antena though( handsfree)

Section 8:
Ok i think thats everything, no doubt i have missed something out, but im sorry if i have. Overall this phone is great, and where the phone loses out, there is always something to make up for it. The price is reasonable and its well worth it. I reccommend it.

There we have it, all done! im gonna go get another ice-cream sandwich!
