For networking only two computers with on expansion possibility you just need a cross twisted pair utp cable. Its very cheap. I suppose the pcs have already lan cards with the suitable drivers installed. The windows wizard to create a new connection will guide you through the rest of the process. Tip: Be sure that the pcs have the same subnet mask number or else they wont communicate. All there simple steps.

It depends on your circumstances. I would do a google for ethernet: he your machines are close together. Or try wireless networking if they are further apart. If you use Wi-Fi make sure you use enable encryption 'cos there are wireless hackers out there.

This is how I connected my 2 pcs, Playstation 2 and X box together.

1x USB & Ethernet Broadband ADSL modem/router (£68 from any Maplins store)
10 meter ethernet cable (£10 from any Maplins store + any other stores)
2x5 meter ethernet cables (£7.99 each from PC world or other stores)
Belkin 5 Port ethernet switch/hub, complete with all wiring to connect to pc (£33.99 from PC world)
8 way trailing socket (various prices from anywhere)

Hope this helps

about 2 months ago i was reading an article in pcformat about a dongle you can buy which goes straight from your ethernet port into a normal 3 pin power socket. You can connect machines up using your power ring as an ethernet hub. Anyone tried this?
