Got me a nokia 6230

Wow, after 2 years of Sony Ericsson I got me a nokia.., all thanks to the lousy k700 specs...

I guess I will just post my thoughts about the phone here for now. I will update it as I discover new things, until I write the final review.

This is by no means a review by a nokia lover, since I've been a fan for quite a while....

I am using T610 (arguably the best phone of 2003) as my reference point.

So....., the good, the bad, and the ugly

The good:
The screen: Contrary to my expectations, the small(er) screen size does not bother me at all. It's very clear, sharp, and colorfull. It doesn't ghost anywhere near as much as the T610's STN, and is very good in sunlight.

The PC suite: (I've downloaded the latest version from the net, which is newer then the one shipped on the CD). It's full featured and easy to use. Supports cable, IR, and Bluetooth (native mode, not serial over BT like ).
The sync software has full support for calendar, tasks (to-do lists), notes, and contacts. I haven't benchmarked it yet, but it appears to work faster then the sync, though I miss the conflict resolution fucntion.

When transferring files over bluetooth, it's done in the background (unlike the T610), so I can use the phone normally during the transfer.

The loudspeaker is fantastic, especially for those MP3 ringtones. The loudspeaker on 6230 doesn't bear any reseblence to the ones found in the older/cheaper nokias, which sound more like a bathtub then a speaker.
The polyphonics sounded pretty good as well, but not as full as the T610, but then - who needs polyphonics when you can use mp3/acc

It's fast! My biggest problem with the T610 is that it's too damn slow to react. 6230 performs with no noticable lag, even when loading mp3s from MMC (starts playing at once)

The call register: I have always preferred the nokia type call register, especially the time stamps that doesn't dissapear next day. Enough said....

The MMC! In my opinion, an mp3 player has to have at least 128 megs. If not, it's easier to buy a separate mp3 player. Copying songs back and forwards all the time is simply to bothersome. 6230 is shipped with 32, so I will be buying either 128 or 256mb MMC soon.
This is probably the number one reason I won't consider K700. Lack of memory makes the mp3 player function completely useless.

The bad:
The typical nokia T9 dictionary leaves much to desire

I miss having 2 alarms (1 normal + 1 recurrant). The 6230 has only one alarm (which can be made reccurant)

The ugly:
- The interface! Switching from to nokia is simply painfull. I miss those high color icons. Would have looked great on the TFT....
- The themes, or actually, the lack of them
- It can be a royal pain in the *** to find a good wallpaper to use, since the menu & info bars simply blend with the dark backgrounds...

-----------------
This is by no means complete....

I don't believe you, you're pulling our legs aren't you?

Posted by wrath000
Actually, I am serious

I can write a review, in a week a so, after I've had the chance to put the phone through hell and form an opinion about it.

..unless this has already been done

First impressions, - it's fast

[edit]
I am still keeping my T610, and will upgrade it when (if) a worthy successor is released.

well all reviews are welcome because everybody puts their own slant on how they see things

I do have to ask if you are not dissapointed by the size of the screen?

Posted by MikLSP
Well I think the K700 pastes the 6230 in all aspects except expandable memory so there's no way I'd choose the heap of Nokia over a classy device from

you guys listen!!! nokia sucks they cant even come out with a 262k screens!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Posted by wrath000
I was afraid the screen size would bother me, but it doesn't. Not yet anyway.

The screen size is very fitting to the phone, besides it's not much different from T610, since the active screen size on it is only 128x128, rest is used by status bars....

The screen quality is definely much better then T610

- sharper/brighter colors
- doesn't fade anywhere as much in the sunlight

[edit]
In a couple of days, I'll by a 128 or 256mb MMC, then I can leave my MP3 player at home....

of course the same thing can be said about the screen quality of the T630 (which I have been using for the last few months) compared with the T610

ever since I heard about the 6230 I couldn't understand why they put such a small screen on a phone with so many capabilities

anyway, I look forward to a review as I certainly respect your opinion

cool, when I sent a contact from T610 to 6230 via bluetooth, it arrived together with the attached image

OMG!!!!!!1111one one one

@wrath000- Good thing that you're used 'staring' at the screen of your SE T610, so in effect, there's has been no such big deal browsing at the screen of your Nokia 6230 . . . @masseur is right as well, if you're used to browsing things in your 'old' fones which has a quite larger screen compared to the of Nokia's 6230, then probabilties are high that you are about to set an appointment with your optometrist in a week's time ! Just like in my case, I'm really having a hard time using my 7650, then browsing at my Dad's 6230 - at often times.

As far as i know havent actually brought out any phones with a 262k screem either. Just cause they are planning to bring one out, it doesnt mean that nokia cant bring one out before them.
And as we have all learnt with the K700, Z1010 and S700, one thing is a "sneek preview" and another is waiting for the phone to be available in the shops.

but yes...nokia sucks! the only exception being the 6230 and the 7610

@folling182 - You just forgot to include the forthcoming release of Nokia's 9500 Communicator in your 'great' Nokia fones list! During it's imminent release, sure it will be the talk of the town!

6230 features-wise is excellent. i like the design aswell. But the relatively small screen puts me off too much. Thats just my view but K7 owns

Posted by wrath000
I just have to comment one more time how good the screen is in direct sunlight. I suppose the high-contrast interface helps too...

gonna run jBench when I get home....

Jbenchmark 1.0 results:

Overall: 1943
Text: 397
2d Shapes: 457
3d Shapes: 368

Jbenchmark 2.0 (midp 2) results:

Overall: 187

Image manipulation: 214
Text: 173
Sprites: 331
3d Transform: 118
User Interface: 156

Switching between 32mb and 128 mb MMC cards does not influence the benchmark results. Neither does formatting the MMC or clearing most of the handset memory. Bottom line: Switching to higher capacity MMC and heavy usage of file system does not influence JAVA performance

MP3

-Mp3 Player plays mp3 and aac files
-I havn't yet tested vbr encoded mp3s, I'll do it later today. I suppose it works.
-The sound quality is good, much better then my mp3-stick player
-It's possible to play via the headset or the loudspeaker
-Mp3 playback does not stop when you exit the music player, so you can do other things with the phone. Mp3 playback in the background does not seem to impact the overall phone performance at all. Mp3 playback does pause when you enter camera mode, but resumes automatically when you exit. When you get a call, the playback is paused, and the call is answered. Music resumes after the call is finished.
-The 5 band equalizer includes the standard templates (such as rock/pop/etc..) and 2 user configurable presets.
-Supports random play & repeate track/all
-Supports m3u playlists
-You can either fastforward/skip or navigate the track list
-When playing in the background, the song name is displayed in main screen (desktop)

whys this in garbage?

Posted by wrath000
This is just a "work" thread so that I can note things down easily, from anywhere. The final review will not be in the garbage

Posted by masseur
btw, I read on mobile review that a 6230i is on its way, have you heard about that?

Posted by wrath000
No, I havn't heard about that.
I think mobile review is the largest source of garbage information and wild (and usually incorrect) guessing.
...and yes, the 6230i is probably coming sooner or later, since nokia always releases an (i) model with some extra features. However I can't think of any possible improvements other then an improved camera, blog, and perhaps JAVA 3d (whatever that is), the things I use least, so it doesn't bother me...

Finally, I got the 6230 for free, as a work phone , so I will still be upgrading my T610 when a worthy phone is released. One thing is certain though, I won't be upgrading to either 6230i, K700 or S700. I am hoping that my next upgrade will be to a Symbian phone, if they ever manage to squeeze it into a decent size. Nokia 7610 was almost attractive. Had it not been for the lack of stereo, I would have gotten that. I guess I will wait for 7610i

I am actually waiting for manufacturers to start improving the existing features instead of adding new ones all the time.

[edit]
btw, have you got a link to what they wrote?
