Never Trust Windows

You know, the reason people shouldn't use Windows 9x as an embedded operating system is because when it crashes -- and god bless its heart, it's going to crash -- your appliance, be it jetliner, roller coaster harness controller, or LG Electronics Internet Refrigerator is going to need to be rebooted. And if it's a jetliner or a roller coaster, it's not such a big deal. Somebody is going to notice, Hey, we're dying here, and give it the three-finger salute. But when the chicken salad has a unhandled exception when you're at the office, there's going to be smell to pay.

Poor LG. This refrigerator wasn't even an early unit -- reader George Mantaring snapped this picture on the floor of Fry's with his Treo 600.

When it comes to Bill Gate's - Windows . . . I really am not satisfied - 'true-monopoly'! Though I am using one now!

So, I guess everything about Microsoft is somewhat - like this:

People are so quick to slate microsoft, but you'll find most (if not all) of them still actually use one of thier products.

If given the choice i would remove my windows XP and switch to Mac OS...Thats why my next laptop will be an i-book and then later my desktop Mac G5..I want to get rid of windows forever.

Just came across this:

KILL BILL - LINUX T-SHIRT

Posted by mixin
Mac OS is no here near the standard of windows
but lets not go into that..

Im kinda liking that t-shirt

Posted by axxxr
Well for a start Mac is much much more stable, hardly ever crashes.Alomost Imune to viruses.no more ctrl alt dlt..And just looks wayyyy better.

Posted by mixin
I agree with the less virus thing, and yeah no more alt+ctrl+delete, instead you got your alt+apple+esc.

And i must be doing something wrong with my mac at work. Everyone always says they are much more stable, but mines always crashing. Internet locking up making the whole poota go slow. I really do prefer my PC... (maybe its just cos im sick of macs at work?)

Posted by axxxr
Maybe your macs faulty or something...The vast majority of ppl that own or work with macs hardly experience any probs.Where with windows its impossible to find someone somewhere who hasnt experienced any probs.

Posted by ADT0079
If macs where used as much as windows u would probaly get alot of virus to.why create a virus for mac if more than half the people use windows.

Posted by axxxr
I know at some point there will be a virus for apple aswell...But viruses are not the main reason...Macs are just proven to much more reliable and stable compared to Windows.

Posted by ADT0079
Seriously why do u think that is. Theres alot of money that microsoft spends on windows technolgy.you would think that there would be no problems with windows.but we all know better

Have read through this for a good explanation for why Macs don't suffer from viruses and security issues anything like as much as Windows.

It's nothing to do with there being less Macs in the world and all to do with the Operating System being more secure in the first place.

Posted by gelfen
windows fails so often because they never re-code it from scratch - they just keep updating and building on what was originally a cheap, flawed system. that, and it tries to be all things to all people.

if MacOS became the dominant OS tomorrow, exactly how long (in days) do you think it would take for viruses to start circulating? it might be inherently more secure, but a large part of it's operative security is its comparitive rarity. nobody has really seriously tried to break it yet because the effects would be too restricted.

@Gelfen: Did you read the article I linked to in my previous post?

It explains that even if Mac OS X had the biggest market share, there simply aren't the methods and holes in the OS for viruses to latch on to and distribute themselves. The OS is more secure in the first place so viruses, trojans, and malware can't get a foothold anyway!

Posted by gelfen
i did read it, but i've seen better arguments from both sides (i'll try to find some) and i think that article is a little too self-serving and ignores a few things. for one, it assumes that even in a mac-dominated world malware would be of the same form as it is now. windows operates a certain way, so malware is geared in that direction and consequently is less compatable with mac. it also ignores the fact that malware is designed for maximum penetration and disruption, and so why bother trying to crack a more secure system when hardly anyone uses it? finally, if mac useage grew to windows proportions the sense of "community" that the article discusses would cease to be and malware proliferation would go on unhindered, especially since the user base would be markedly different in nature and attitude.

i'm really not interested in the mac vs. windows debate, i just find it annoying how people get so one-eyed about it. both systems have strengths and weaknesses, so make a choice and be happy.

EDIT: found one of the articles i was looking for. although it's about MyDoom and mentions open source, it has a good points about software "security".

MyDoom is YourDoom

Firstly, this isn't a general Mac vs PC debate - we're talking about one specific issue: security. I know very well that Macs & PCs both have their advantages and disadvantages (I use both daily in my job) - I'm not getting 'one-eyed' about it, so no need to get annoyed!

But, when it comes to security the Mac does have the upper hand. Yes, I know that it is possible to write malware for Macs, but at the moment (and for the foreseeable future) if you choose to use a Mac you're pretty safe. And let's face it, Macs will never increase their marketshare significantly past the current 3-5% so will remain a very low priority for malware creators - another plus point.

Well I read somewhere that hackers are not writing viruses for the mac because its too difficult to look for vulnerabilities. Where as its a lot easier in windows.

@axxxr, i agree macs are more stable than pc's

makes me wanna buy a powerbook!!! :-/

Posted by gelfen
it also depends what you want it for.

Posted by axxxr
Want it for everything i do on windows and for things i cant do on windows.

Posted by gelfen
such as? (i ask out of curiosity, not derision)

Posted by axxxr
For a start i do like Office for Mac its far superior in form and function
But thats just a start..i overal prefer the OS..look & feel etc..

i am aware of certain mac-only scientific applications, especially in chemistry, but is there really anything that a mac can do that a pc can't?

you may be interested in this series of articles from ZDNet:

A Month With a MAC
What happens when you make a long-time PC worker use a Mac? First of all, all the little differences come to the fore.

or this one too

As the Mac turns 20, has the PC caught up?
The Apple Mac turns 20...but the real question is not has it grown up, but are PCs now as impervious to gecko lizards?

I agree that a PC can pretty much what a mac can but there certain tasks Apps which can only run on macs..at this moment in time i cannot remember which ones.(its like 2.30am here). But just for the fact alone that macs never crash and never catch a virus or a worm is enough to comvince me to convert..Since my pc caught the blaster worm couple of weeks ago had to call up microsoft several time to get it fixed.I've totally been put off by windows..its one of series of probs i've had with my pc...

By the way what time is it in oz??

that's fair enough i suppose. i have *touch wood* so far avoided any serious issues with viruses on my personal PC (not so much on the work one, but that was the IT dept's fault) because i try to keep my security as up to date as possible. it probably helps that i mostly only use it at weekends, so when a virus or patch notification comes out mid-week i update before i do anything else. i know that's not bullet-proof, but i've been lucky so far.

oh, it's about 11:40 am here.

Cool!...Well looks like the days just begun for u..Time i should be hitting the sack!

i'd be a little skeptical of apple telling you to buy apple (as i wuold with MS saying "buy MS"). i'm not denying the truth of it, just be wary of rose coloured glasses.

My PC running Windows XP really slows down when running Photosphop and then sometimes the program stops responding.

I hear this doesn't happen on a Mac.
