Pffffffff... Who knows?... Americans are different in so much ways...

Posted by vckay
Soccer is currently the fastest growing sport in north america.

Posted by ceco
Reason 1: America didn't invent it, we are not the best, so to cover our asses, we say that it sucks. Best example of this, baseball, which oh my God it sucks more than anything in the world. Americans like it, but most don't realize that most of the players are foriegn.

Reason 2: Soccer doesn't have something exciting happen every minute, like basketball or American football. Soccer is the beautiful game, because a play can start a full 5 minutes before the goal. And when the goal goes in, that is very exciting.

Reason 3: Let America win the World Cup, and then as is true in American fashion, they will all jump on the bandwagon of soccer, calling it the best.

Reason 4: We like baseball, the most stupid game ever invented. I heard that God actually invented Hell only for those that like baseball. God I hate baseball. I pray everytime that there is talk of a strike, that the sport will implode on itself.

Soccer is the best sport in the entire world, that might be why it is number 1 in the world.

And whats up with us calling the baseball, basketball and american football championships the "World" championships.

Yes, the NHL, NBA, and even some NFL is live or tape delay if you have satellite, at least here in Greece. If the US had good soccer, and not that crap that they call the MLS, then maybe they would like soccer more.

soccer ain't that big in Australia either. everyone will support the Socceroos for the World Cup tilts, and the Olyroos at the Olympics, but the national league is a complete toilet of a setup off-field (i.e. management and officialdom).

very few people follow the local comp. most of the rather small band of support is from immigrants or first-gen australians from countries where soccer is popular - but even that meagre audience is waining with the off-field mess. there's more support here for the British and European leagues than the local one, but that's still a fair minority of the population. in addition all our best players - many with considerable reputations - move overseas because of the poor state of our local comp. here is the list of club affiliations for a recent Socceroos squad (taken from the Australian Soccer website):

AGOSTINO Paul - TSV 1860 Munchen GERMANY
ALOISI John - Athletico Osasuna SPAIN
BRESCIANO Marco - Parma ITALY
CAHILL Tim - Millwall ENGLAND
CHIPPERFIELD Scott - FC Basel SWITZERLAND
EMERTON Brett - Blackburn Rovers ENGLAND
KALAC Zeljko (gk) - Perugia ITALY
KEWELL Harry - Liverpool FC ENGLAND
LAYBUTT Steve - Royal Excelsior Mouscron BELGIUM
LAZARIDIS Stan - Birmingham City ENGLAND
MOORE Craig - Rangers SCOTLAND
MUSCAT Kevin - Millwall ENGLAND
NEILL Lucas - Blackburn Rovers ENGLAND
OKON Paul - KV Oostende BELGIUM
POPOVIC Tony - Crystal Palace ENGLAND
SCHWARZER Mark (gk) - Middlesbrough ENGLAND
SKOKO Josip - Genclerbirligi TURKEY
STERJOVSKI Mile - Lille FRANCE
VIDMAR Tony - Cardiff City WALES
VIERI Max - Napoli ITALY
VIDUKA Mark - Leeds United ENGLAND
ZDRILIC David - Aberdeen SCOTLAND

two problems many aussies have with soccer is firstly that often very little seems to occur (why spend hours to watch a nil-all draw?), and secondly the perceived "weakness" of players - the ones who collapse in agony after feeling the breeze of an opposition player who runs past, and if any genuine contact is made you'd think the guy was about to die. our local brands of football (Australian Rules and rugby) are far more physical. arguably Australian Rules is just as skillful, while rugby is certainly more rough-and-tumble.

but then why would you follow soccer when there's Australian Rules Football and Cricket, or even rugby in the north-eastern states?

btw it's called FOOTBALL, not soccer! grrrrr!

Unfortunately, football has been spoilt by all the money involved in it, I'm not sure what the situation's like in other countries, but in England there is only realistically about 4, maybe 5 or 6 clubs that could win the Premiership. These clubs attract and generate most of the money, whilst most other football clubs struggle to break even financially. Most people in the world will have heard of Manchester United, and Arsenal, but how many could name all the other clubs in the Premiership, let alone the other football leagues?

Sorry if I'm a bit off topic there, I hope that it does attract more international attention, and good luck England in Euro 2004! Let's add the European Championships to our Rugby World Cup! (Sorry Gelfen!)

Baseball? Dont u mean Rounders :-)

hi sammy.

it might be called "football" (by some) but it's not real FOOTY!

(although strictly, it's the only code with the right to the name "football" since it's the only one where you can't use your hands).

as for the union, we were lucky to get as far as we did and in the end it was only one player who made the differece (i.e. Johnny).

wrt to soccer, the good thing about the british comps is the FA Cup because any club in the country can potentially win. there are occassionally some really good stories to come out of that.

btw - Sammy you're welcome over in my new thread, as is anyone else who cares to drop by.

Football - a ball hit with a foot and a game where a ball is hit with oh err.... a foot. A simple explanatory word invented years ago buy some bloke called Fred, "By George I think I will kick this ball with my foot for no reason, why its a football".

Soccer - A silly word invented by an American because their Rugby for girls game was for some silly reason already called football (why, when its predominately thrown, caught and put between a fat sweaty guys arse?). " Oh dear boys, what shall we call it? - flabbit, hoofer, shibbla, naffty, wibbly? Oh darn it, is dumb and boring anyway lets call it Soccer." " Why dont we call it football like the rest of the world dan?" "Becasue we are American, ARE YOU QUESTIONING MY PATRIOTISM!?"

In Australia we also call it Soccer.

Football, or more correctly footy, is Aussie rules football

Is that the one where punching the opposition in the nuts is acceptable?

Posted by Krubach
Well, i like baseball and Ice Hockey.
But i think the magic in Football is that the scoring doesn't happen everytime or it can happen very quickly.

It's like sex, if you're not making it everytime, you enjoy it more when you do.

So like a fine cheese, if you dont eat Port Salut everyday would enjoy it at the weekend more.

no that's thugby.....err...i mean rugby.

Aussie Rules is a game of speed, strength, skill, finesse and stamina (and quite a bit of athleticism).

what are you all on?????

Football was invented by the good old Brits, so the americans felt they had to steal it. So they called it soccer and prtended it was a whole new sport. Thats the yanks for you!!!!!! (and aussies)

I guess the most populat sport activity in the US are as follows:

1. American Football
2. Baseball
3. Basketball
4. Ice Hockey

Here in Manila - Soccer or best called as Football is not a popular game. Basketball and Billiards now rule the metropolis!
The greatest Soccer player of all time for me is still the undisputed - Pele of Brazil and not Beckham of UK or Maradona of Argentina or even Ronaldo and Rivaldo of Brazil as well.
I use to represent our school against the others when I was still in Elementary when playing Soccer (midget division), and my, that sport is very tiring!
