T-Mobile just starting charging 15 cents for each international text message. Anybody know what other GSM providers in the US charge for international texts? I hope there is something cheaper because I send a lot of international text messages.

Posted by surreal4484
Are they? Just curious do you have to have the text messaging service plan, or is it just like the 5 cents per message type deal only 15 cents?

Posted by DarkWolfX
Huh? that's odd, here in Mexico they don't charge extra for international SMS.
...But maybe later...

Posted by Saif
They just started this June 1st here so you might want to check if they are doing it elsewhere.

t-mobile is not charging $.15 TRUST ME.

Posted by Saif
From: http://www.t-mobile.com/services/textmessaging/pricing.asp

"Sending a text message from the US to an international phone number is 15¢ per message"

Posted by rj
why don't you call them and ASK? after you call them, then you can tell me if they are charging for international text messages OK?

Posted by senninha
i would imagine they would be charging a higher rate for intl sms simply because the recipient's network would impose additional charges for delivering the message.

if they are not charging, it is only because your carrier is doing so to promote sms usage. thus, they would be absorbing the costs of intl delivery, but that would definitely not last forever.

since T-Mobile US is still new to the SMS feature, none of the carriers guarantee that the text message one is sending will be received. T-Mobile has announced that they will start charging for international text messaging since April ($.35 outgoing), been moved to May, and after changing the layout of the website last month, they decided to post the 'Effective June 1st 2004 ($.15 outgoing)Notice" Unfortunately, as un predictable as T-Mobile is, this notice has been postponed until further notice which means ...it still comes out the the SMS package one has or $.5 cents to send an international text message.

SAIF... make sure you know what you're talking about next time.

i'm afraid i killed the thread by posting the right information.

Relax rj! The reason I posted here is to get some info, not start an argument. Thanks for your information!

Int'l SMS works excellent on my Cingular account. It was not as reliable on my T-Mobile but they might have improved their service the last month. Anyway, I think I pay the same for national and international with Cingular if anyone would like to know....I know the question was regarding T-M.....just wanted to share my knowledge/experience.

Well,its obvious most of u don't know that there's a new kind of contract between all the gsm providers in the world to cash in on the sms success.They retain 7c when receiving an it'nal sms and the sender's ntw the other 7.This happens in Europe since 2002.

Boyi. Do u txt alot of ppl (gals) in other countries then :-p .. I can be honest and truly here to say that I have a dear friend whom I send quickie txts to she lives in Deutschland :-) .. Curious anyone from england txt'ed someone who's in america? Do u get the msgs??! What bout NZ and australia ?

Posted by punkserb
this makes me REALLY mad that they started doing this. it is because i have t-mobile and an option called "buddytime." buddytime gives me unlimited t-mobile to t-mobile calling (basically free calling unlimited anytime within the network) and unlimited text messaging. this was very important to me, because many of my friends and most of my family is in croatia. so i use about 1500 SMS's a month communicating with them.

when i signed up for the buddytime about 1.5 years ago, i SPECIFICALLY asked if it was just for international or domestic text messaging. i confirmed with three representatives and a supervisor that it was BOTH international and domestic.

now when i call about these new charges, they are trying to tell me that buddytime is only meant for domestic and that i will still have unlimited domestic SMS but will be paying $0.15/SMS for international ones.

this has my blood boiling.

Posted by Miss UK
Is icq a im or sumat?

Posted by kimcheeboi
@misssuk--yeah i think so...

does anyone text esato members? I got a text from superunknown today, but i have to reply via PM cos of t-mobile's charges!

Posted by knight4led
@miss uk texts are very reliable to cingular customers in america from almost everywhere in Europe. I had an Orange prepaid card over the summer while I was traveling Europe that I used almost exclusively to text my friends back home.

Posted by absinthebri
No-one ever texts me.

Posted by Miss UK
Thats good then how much did orange charge u to send txts to the usa whilst travelling? .. Kim, whats the point in txting esato mems esatos free to use lol

Posted by knight4led
I didn't check on the price of every text message. To be honest I just talked to a salesperson at a store and asked a bunch of questions regarding international calls, texts and taking the sim all over Europe. I bought what sounded like the most reasonable plan. I still have the sim, but I wouldn't know how to check all the charges that were on it and it has no money left on it.

Posted by xxcoolflipxx
Cingular doesn't charge international texts it's like a normal rate.

Posted by sfaguy
@Saif,

you are right. i just got my bill and i was charged 0.15 for each international SMS. i have been sending international SMS forever with my $2.99 300 SMS plan.

i think T-Mobile has gotten way greedy about the new charge. they told me 'well, incoming internationally SMS is free and it comes out from your 300 SMS budget' i replied 'it would be quite rude not to reply to a SMS, wouldn't it'.

i wish t-mobile would provide the grand-father plan whereby people who signed up for the SMS plans, prior they decided to charge for internationl SMS, can use it for FREE.

i jsut hate it when any company starting to get greedy and charge for every little thing.

Posted by sfaguy
anyone knows of a site that allows you to send FREE internationl SMS from your computer?

i am trying to avoid paying T-mobile 0.15 per international SMS

Posted by knight4led
I know you can add a phone number to AIM and sent any amount of texts to it, but I haven't tried it with an international number. Might be worth a try.

Posted by sfaguy
@knight4led,

i have AIM, version 4.7 for Mac. I do not see how to attach a number. can you show me how it's done?

Posted by knight4led
in the list setup menu on my version of AIM for PC there is an option to add mobile next to the add buddy icon. May not be there on your version for Mac.

Posted by sfaguy
@knight4led,

thanks. please report back if you can send int'l SMS via AIM.

I just got off the phone with T-mobile about this and unfortunately, they can do it, according to Section 4 of their Terms and Conditions. However, if you're on contract and you want to get out of your contract, you have 14 days to do so without paying the cancellation fee because of this increase, based on those same T&C:

Changes to the Agreement or Charges. We may change or increase the charges for Service, Other Services, or any other charges at any time. However, if we: (a) increase the charges for a Service and you would be charged a cancellation or other fee to cancel that Service, or (b) we modify a material term of our Agreement with you and the modification would be materially adverse to you, we will notify you of the increase or modification (as provided in Sec. 22) and you can cancel the affected Service without paying the cancellation or other fee (which is your only remedy) by following the cancellation instructions in the notice. If you do not cancel the Service by following the instructions in the notice, then you agree to the increase or modification, even if you paid for Service in advance. If the notice does not say how long you have to cancel, then it is within 14 days after the date of the notice. If we increase charges for Service or Other Services to which no cancellation or other fee to cancel service applies (e.g., use of directory assistance), we will notify you of the increase, but you will still be responsible for any cancellation fee applicable to any Services you may have if you cancel Service.

Still, it's a p***k move. I'll reply with how this turns out. If there were another provider with good service and cheap pay as you go, I'd switch. But I have to start worrying about 850MHz band phones if I do. Damn AT&T and Cingular.

Posted by sfaguy
i wish i had known about the 14 days cancellation condition. i think i may have gone beyond the 14 days window.

i had a one year contract with 6 more months to go. damn those greedy carriers.

assholes yes they do charge 15c that sucks

when u receive one overseas it gets out of ur bucket tho

Posted by sfaguy
@TonyMontana,

you are correct in that when you get one from oversea, it goes against your SMS bucket. unfortunately, when you get one you feel obligated to reply or your friends oversea would be wondering if you get the SMS.

i was hoping there are some cool sites that allow you to send SMS on a limited daily basis (like 10 FREE sms daily).

i am already paying t-mobile $2.99/month and i just refuse to pay them for sending int'l SMS

Posted by EasyRiter
I wonder if any of you had received any notification from T-Mobile that international text messaging charge has changed on August 29 from $0.05 to $.15 per message.

I know it did change after I called them. They told me 2 things: 1) one rep said that since very few people used this, they did not care about notifying customers, 2) 2nd one said that they sent an insert to customers.

I checked my last 2 bills--no insert, no info, nothing! It is not posted when you login into your account--you need to search for that change on T-Mobile site! One rep told me that it was my responsibiliity to figure that out.

Secret practices?

Posted by sfaguy
@EasyRiter,

they told me the same when i called them. i can't say i remember seeing it with the statement.

as for item #1, they didn't think it was necessary for them to inform customer because according to them, not too many of us send int'l SMS. if this is in fact true according to their statistics, then why bother to charge 0.15/SMS when their bottom line should be not affected due to the lack of usage. what an oxy moron.

Posted by ocir
I HAVE CALLED T MOBILE AND TOLD THEM THAT IT IS NOT FAIR FOR US OLD CUSTOMERS TO SUDDENLY NOW GOT CHARGED FOR THIS 15 CENT OVERSEAS TEXT MESSAGE. THEY CAN DO IT TO THE NEW CUSTOMER, BUT FOR US, OLD CUSTOMER THEY SHOULD HAVE KEEP THE ORIGINAL PLAN. THEY GAVE ME EXTRA 100 MIN FOR MY INCONVENIENCE (VALID FOR 90 DAYS) AND GAVE ME A FAX NUMBER FOR CUSTOMER RELATION (813-353-6545).....

I SAY WE ALL GATHER OUR NAMES AND T-MOBILE NUMBER, AND FILE A COMPLAINT ABOUT THIS....AND FAX THE COMPLAINT TO T-MOBILE.

WHO'S WITH ME WITH THIS?...AND WHO WANNA BE IN CHARGE?

LET ME KNOW.

ricotmail-promo@yahoo.com
dissapointed tmobile customer.

for those of us who have T-Mobile and tired of paying US$0.15 per international SMS, you may consider using the smsbug software.

The may be the alternative for sending Int'l SMS, I got this info from someone in Howard forum and it costs about US 3.75 cents per SMS.

Go to http://www.smsbug.com
1. download it from your mobile phone
2. register your phone
3. they will send you 20 FREE SMS credits to try out the product.
4. you can buy more credits afterward (3EURO for 100 SMS...)

here is the thread from the user in Howard...
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=3953565

I just installed it and it seems to work well. Why pay for 15 cents to T-Mobile when this is only costing 3.75 cents.

Has anyone else tried the SMSBUG software? how has it worked out? I was totally lied to by Cingular .. they said the $9.99 text messaging plan would include international messaging....but guess what? U have to pay extra for the messaging internationally...so the 9.99 plan is totally useless.

Also anyone text-message Pakistan? I need a something that will let me message for free...I know Yahoo Messenger lets u send internationl text to India, Philipines, and a few other places...but not Pakistan

they charge also about 10 cents per message her in Thailand too, and they don't clearly tell you this, it's thought to be 'included'. Now I just use free web-to-phone email services such as these:

agent sms dot com
http://spicesms.com
http://smstoday.co.uk (has a directory listing of these services in a section here).

the only service i've had a bad encounter with is SMS.ac which is total thieves and charge wontonly.
