hehe! true...doesn't tally with what i said earlier...but trust me, everything else is cheaper!!
i don't get why this memstick type (memstick due) is more expensive..
MMC 128 is about $30...how much you can get it there?

Where have all you people disappeared?
Posted by milad_sm
haha!
you are right...it's been quiet here!
well, i gave up looking for iranians here! and for english, i use the main forum eh!
but as long as i we can keep this thread alive and on top, there will be more chances of iranians seeing it!
been busy anyways...
saw yesterday's match?! boy it was nice!!
Posted by Krubach
Are you talking about my country's victiry against Spain?
It was veeeeeeeeery nice
Posted by milad_sm
lol! yeah! that's what I meant!
but quit bragging!
Iran would kick your butts!!
too bad we never have a match!
but seriously, they were good! specially deko and ronaldo!
what's up with figo?! why so lame recently?
Posted by Krubach
Figo is 30. And he had a very tiring season (played much games in Real Madrid and taking the whole team on his back, while the others were resting
But yesterday he didn't play that bad...
About Iran kicking our ass... hmm ... well...you never know
Posted by Sammy_boy
@milad - I was beginning to wonder what had happened to you!
Anyways, England are playing tonight, if they can avoid losing, they could be meeting Portugal I think either in the next round or thr round after that! Should be a good game if we can get through!!
Just heard something on the radio about 3 Royal Navy boats have been seized by Iranian authorities, something about a disputed waterway, have you heard anything about it?
Posted by milad_sm
haha! ya...been a while!
see, football is one of the most unpredictable games!
but god! england has the unluckiest team i say!
you guys always have the best players and play the best, but you can never win!! it's silly!!
ya, i have gotto see tonights match! here in iran it's 11:15!! too late...and i can't stay awake for long, but tonight i gotta watch!!
and...nope...haven't heard...3 Royal Navy boats ??? where?! persian gulf? caspian sea?! what were they doing there?!!
iran-uk relations are not that bad...there must be a reasons if what you say i true...
Posted by Sammy_boy
Tell me about it with England!!
From what I've heard, it's 3 Royal Navy training vessels and 8 men been held, I don't know what sea it is, but I think it's in the Persian Gulf, as it's the same stretch of territory that apparently you were fighting with Iraq over in the war with them.
It sounds like the Iranian authorities will only hold them for a short while to make a point, and treat the men well before releasing them. I don't think anyone in this country's that worried.
And yes, I believe that UK/Iran relations have improved recently, our foreign minister visited Iran last year too for the first time for a long while. I just hope that relations will improve rather than get worse over the coming months!
Posted by milad_sm
well done UK!!
boy!! 4 goals!! bravo!
i really enjoyed it last night...
as you said, i think they want to make a 'point'!!
like we ain't scared of you!
quite frankly, iran has made it well through all these ages and all the pressures! we are very miserable right now in terms of econimy but we kept our honour! we didn't bow under pressure. and i mean pressure!!
geee...my battery dries up real quick since i installed a new memstick and loads of apps!! nothing in the tasklist, but i donno why it's still consuming so much power....it's been troubling me recently.
Posted by Sammy_boy
You can't have a heart condition to support England!!
I don't think that anyone's too worried in this country about this situation with the 3 boats, other things (like England winning last night!) have taken precedence in the news, and I think the better relations between the UK/Iran will help also.
With regards to your battery - you're using a P800 or P900, aren't you? My P800 eats through a charged battery even if I'm not using if a huge amount - it will last about 2, maybe 3 days maximum! it's one of the phone's downsides I think. I think there's a couple of thread on battery life and how to treat batteries on the forum, but can't remember exactly what they're called.
Posted by milad_sm
haha! but england fans are rough man!
i like their fights!!! hehee!
saw the fight after the french game?!
ya it's a p800...i am gonna format it again now...hope it'll fix things up!
actually, i was quite happy with the battery...wayyyy better than 3650...i could use it quite heavily for 2 days...it has to be the damn hacked camcorder somehow!! donno how, but it all happens after i install it!! i experienced it twice!! can't be wrong!! can i?!!
grrr!!

Hey, my parents come from Iran
Born and raised in Australia though (Parents have been here for 23 years), never been to Iran, but my father went back there a few months ago for a visit.
Thankfully my parents left there before the revolution (I aint muslim, so I dont really agree with a religous theocracy) and went to the US to live there and raise my two older sisters there.
He hasnt been there for 25 years, he was quite surprised at all the changes that have occurred since he left
About the relation with Arabic to Persian, there isnt really any correlation between the two. Persian is an Indo-European language, Arabic is an afro-asiatic language (aka Semitic).
Sure there are a lot of borrowed words in some dialects, but that doesnt mean much, Spanish isnt related to Arabic but borrows a lot of words from it, probably more so than Farsi.
Remember though, a lot of our linguists and poets also contributed to arabic, giving the once muddled and disorganised language a solid grammatical structure.
"I am Dariush, the Great King, the King of Kings
The King of many countries and many peoples
The King of this expansive land, the son of Wishtasp Achamenia
Persian, the son of a Persian, 'Aryan', from the Aryan Race "
I would really like to brush up on my Farsi skills sometime, I cant even read the Nastaliq alphabet... only UniPers ( www.unipers.com )

hahahahaha!! nice to have you with us jaymo!!
jeeeezez!!
now that's a nationalist!
that completes what i was talkin' about! hehe!
right, it's parsi...and iran's persia...they changed the name during one of the Shahs...i don't remember which!!
anyways, as to your question, mobile phones are really common here...except that, as i said earlier, SIM cards are too expensive to have! about a $1000 or so. other than that it's fine...no or little GPRS though...
your parsi is not bad, for a guy who hasn't been to iran! but hopefully your parents talk in parsi eh?!
i too lived half of my life abroad...and i met MANY people who are dying to go back to iran..but can't, cuz of political reasons...or simply cuz they are scared!! i too was scared to come back here...but now when i think of it, it's heaven here...for us i mean!! for us iranians...foreigners, may not like some of our customs at first...specially religious ones...until they understand them.
i really hope all iranians come back to iran and build it up...
we CAN unite...we can be happy like after iran-australia soccer game that led us to world cup after 28 years!! or after beating USA in that same period!!
we can join hands and rebuild Bam city, after the deadly earthquake...
but...we only must try.
like sammy's signature, "All it takes for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing" - Edmund Burke
so let's be the good guys and speak up!!
oh and sammy, i just saw the news about the english navy boats!! come on man! what were they really doing there?! Mr straw said they were there by mistake?! our news said they had very detailed maps of iran...they said they are not sure yet, but from what they said it implied to me that they were kinda spying or something!! or gathering information to be fair!
but one thing is for sure, they didn't have clearification from our marine forces.
and...mr straw said they came there by mistake...hmmm!
politics is really strange these days!!
cheers!
Posted by whizkidd
Hi people! Whazzup? I wasn't around btw i would like to tell all of you that today is my birthday!
Posted by Sammy_boy
@whizzkid - happy birthday!!!
@milad - I very much doubt those men were spying - they probably got lost, or their map reading was woeful!! Why would they be gathering information? I'm pretty sure we're not planning anything nasty towards Iran - although I couldn't speak for the Americans, with Bush in charge they're pretty unpredictable...... btw, how do you feel about being described as being part of an 'axis of evil' by Mr. Bush? Not good I would guess - I would be pretty miffed at being called that!!
About your battery life - it would be interesting to see how long your battery lasts without installing any camcorder software, and compare it to how long it lasts with it installed. Signal strength can have something to do with battery life as well - I live in a fairly weak signal area so my phone has to work harder for a decent signal. I sometimes leave it connnected to the GPRS as well, which probably drains it a bit.
Posted by milad_sm
hey whizz! happy birthday pal!
sammy, if you ask me, through what we learnt in history classes, england was always on iran's nerves!! but you guys are really smart! i mean smart!! i think mr blair, if not more, is just as guilty as Bush.
about the navy men, why not!! they could be spying...i don't rule that out. but who knows! the gulf is a very sensitive area.
and...axis of evil?!! it's a joke to me...as funny as when he said you are either with us, or against us! i really laugh at bush when he talks..he reminds of my 10 year old cousin...he uses the same method to intimidate his sister!!!! you guys have seen his clips on letterman show, or all the late shows right?!! my favourite is the fool me once thing and the nose picking!! love that guy!!
but sammy, i really don't like to sound over confident or blindfoldedly love my country...but even if we are as bad as what bush says, he can NEVER attack us...i know my people. we may not like our government, but we LOVE our land and each other. if he even thinks of attacking us, he'll be sorry!!
8 years...8 damned years of war with iraq...why? cuz they took few of our cities...we could have stopped the way in the middle and let go of the deserted city...and save billions of dollars and millions of lives, but no, it was our land. and we were alone in that war, not to forget.
and...goooooood point!! my office has VERY bad coverage...the signal indicator is jumping nonstop...you got a point there.
but ain't the phone ALWAYS searching for network?! does it change anything?
and...noooo! no more camcorder for me!! i am happy the way it is!! hehe! not worth the battery life...the quality is tooo bad anywayz!
Posted by Sammy_boy
I have to say as well I think that if the US invaded Iran it would be a big mistake - all this warmongering simply makes more terrorists and makes more people hate the US! I've heard something similar to what you said as well, that many people in your country don't like the leadership there, but don't want the US invading to effect 'regime change'. As ever, the innocent civilian just wanting to lead their life, go to work, raise a family, etc. would suffer.
I do not hate the US, but really dislike Bush!! You're right, he is funny unintentionally a lot of the time, he can't really be that thick, can he!?!!? Although it is kinda worrying that this joke of a man is in charge of the worlds last remaining superpower..... I have to admit the American arrogance tends to piss me off a bit sometimes. Nothing against the American people in general, of course!
Interesting what you say about the camcorder software - I've been wondering about getting hold of a copy of it for my P800, I don't think I'll bother any more! The battery lasts better when in a good/full signal area, I had a T610 that lasted about 3 days on a full charge when at home, and when out on my placement where the signal strength is full, the battery lasted 4-5 days.
Posted by boto43
USA can't invade all islamic countries. They occupy just two countries and they are sick of it. Iran is a big independent country who still have some ties with Russia or better with former Soviet Union andIranian ppl doesn't have to be afraid of us invasion . Btw Sammy are u Iranian or European? Hope u know what I mean. ;-)
Posted by Sammy_boy
@boto: Neither, I'm British
Posted by boto43
Sorry, I was driving at fact that you are missing in EU forum. ;-)
Posted by milad_sm
true true.
not to forget iran's HUGEEE land which makes it at least 10 times costier than Iraq to invade, let alone the number of forces they might need. geographically, it is 100 times harder than iraq or afghanistan as well!! from west, we are guarded with mountains, and from east, deserts between iran and afghanistan!! we are only vulnerable from sky, i think!
oh sammy, i have nothing against the american people! i mean, look at the people, i hardly see anyone on the net, tv, streets who like the government!! really! in fact i have losta american friends...
one thing is they get my jokes!!! hehe! i tend to joke a lot, and usually asians and well, some eurpoeans don't get my jokes!! like i don't get theirs! but americans do! similar thinking i guess.
anyways, ammm....boto43, nice to have you onboard!
ya, iran and x-soviet union have pretty good ties, well, at least after the iraq war! cuz then you guys offered them weapons...but now we are great.
and you are right...true that muslims are realllly messed up now and there is absolutely NOOOO unity between them, but it's ain't gonna be that way forever. once we get on our nerves, red alert!!
i was just thinking, what in the world are we talking so much politics for!! this is not relevant at all..
i'll go back to SE!!
i just formatted my drive...let's see what happens...i brought along my charger as well!! just in case!! i am fed up of using the phone only for 3 hours!! >:(

Yeah, no more politics, too much politics on TV. That is why I prefer to be on the PC rather than watching the TV
I am waiting on the Sony Ericsson Z1010, is it out over there? How much?
The son of a mofo is taking forever to be released here
My NEC e808 is a pain to carry around and use (first generation 3G phone, bulky and buggy grrrr..)
Is your family originally from Tehran? My dad is from Tabriz and my mother is from Shiraz, they moved to Tehran after getting married and had 2 kids there (my sisters) then moved to the US, and then finally, Australia.

it's quite hard to find pure tehranis these days! lot of mix marriages!
err...to be honest i haven't seen z1010, cuz i haven't looked for it...
i used z600 for a while...it SUCKED big time...it looked good though!
but i am sure it's already here!
everything comes here very fast..no worries on that. it's also much cheaper here.
which part of OZ are you?
you and your sisters much have an age gap then! that would be niiiiiice!!! hehehe!
Posted by JaymoFish
Yeah, my sisters are 16 and 14 years older than me, out of the house and have their own kids to raise. I have been an uncle from the age of 7, currently an uncle of 3 and expecting a new nephew end of this year.
I live in Perth, a city on the Western coast of Australia, with a 1.5 million population, tiny compared to Tehran's 14 million people
May I add that we are a very clean city, almost zero pollution and the streets are clean enough to eat off! (well, most of them... and no, I wont eat off the ground)
So that is one advantage over Tehran, hehe. What percentage of people drive paykuns? Those things pollute a hell of a lot.

@milad - I think I sound more anti-American than I actually am! Anyway, I'll stop there before things get political again!
With regards to charging your phone, if you have a car, I'd get yourself a car charger, then you can top you battery up if it's low whilst on the way to work or something. Failing that, you can get these chargers which plug into your USB port and you can charge the phone from that. If all else fails - I've got this wind-up phone battery charger I always keep in my bag - it makes your hand ache after a few minutes winding, but could be well worth it if it provides enough power to make that crucial phone call! It's also very small and portable, so it can be taken anywhere. Either that, or you could buy yourself a spare battery and take one of those around with you for extended time away from the mains supply!
btw, given that I'm not from Iran and posting in the Iran thread, I'll go away if you like!
Posted by milad_sm
oh hohoho! no no no my friend!
tehran is not like what it used to be!!
it's so cleaaaaaan now! like you won't believe!!
i am serious. i was so surprised. some ppl still throw garbage out their car windows but no worries, we have a good mayor! they clean the city very well. and lotsa plantations...you see flowers everywhere!
tehran's very beautiful...specially in spring.
and peykans!! yesss! they are still on the streets, but the police is stopping all cars that are smokey!! and to help them buy new cars, they give them special loans....and...you have heard about iran's new cars right? we have Samand, which is quite good, and looks somewhat like volvo s60...quite classy and with reasonable price.
cars i wouldn't worry, the traffic i will!! traffic jams here are killer. it's very bad man.
though they are constructing new roads quite often. jam is worse in city centre.
and sammy, what are you talking about!! anyone's welcome here...
don't even mention it. we are happy that name of iran has attracted you to come and join us!

what a tragedy man....
i donno when they are gonna take some action...
driving is an art in iran!! rather a stunt! you really must buckle up to go in the street!! i had 2 accidents the first week i came to iran!
mirrors are not enough when driving! you need both you eyes open all the time, plus you need someone else sitting beside you! hehe!
aaargggh!! what's bothering me is that when face to face, ppl die for each other, like they wanna pay for others' food and stuff, you know, all the 'taarof', but when it comes to driving and queues in general, it's a messs!!!! no one steps down.
i really regret this behaviour...
sometimes ppl look surprised at me, when i give them way!! in many countries i have seen, driving is a part of their charachteristic...part of their personality. it's sad that we have to be this way...
Posted by Sammy_boy
Yes, I heard something about that bus crash, nasty that.
Driving in Britain is becoming more of an art too - more and more people are becoming violent, and 'road rage' seems to be getting more common! People still do let people out, and I hope that continues. Driving in cities is, well, a challenge to say the least, with people's driving, one way systems, pedestrianised areas, and speed camera all conspiring to make it a nightmare!!

Hey All
Wonder if you can help me a bit.... I am a poor MBA student told to research the mobile phone market in Iran
I had a few questions (actually quite a few). I wonder if anyone can answer.
1. How expensive are the mobile phones in Iran? Say a typical entry level phone? Do you get the phone as part of the connection package as in Europe or do you buy it seperately?
2. I know that it is extremely hard to get a mobile phone connection in Iran right now. But do people own mobile phones even without having a connection (doesn't make a lot of sense actually)?
3. Your top 3 complaints from the national operator (e.g, pricey, patchy reception etc.)?
4. Samsung seems to be the most popular phone in Iran. Does anyone know its marketshare? And what are the other popular companies? Nokia, LG, Sony Ericsson ?
5. What is the population of Tehran?
6. How is the mobile coverage outside Tehran?
I guess for the time being, this will do
Posted by JaymoFish
5. 14 million
Posted by milad_sm
interesting!
i'll give it a try:
1. first, right now there is only one public provider and that is the main telecom ministry. that is, not just mobile, all telecomm. and they are not having any package deal whatsoever. we have to beg them to give us a line!! as i said earlier, in the street you can buy a SIM card or a line to be more precise at about $1100....sometimes they give a mobile with it as well...of course a simple one. here samsung is very popular. you can however register for a line with telecom, at about half the price, $500 but you have to wait a looooong time for it!! usually 6 months!! it has become a good business for many! high interest rate ey?! oh and about the phones, they're pretty cheap...actually much cheaper than other countries...say for example a 6600 is about $365 . if you have any other model in mind tell me and i'll find out...
2. it's not hard, in fact you can just give them a call and they'll drop it in your house the same day/night!! it's just too damn expensive! and yes, it sure wouldn't make any sense to have a mobile without a line!! who said we do?? i donno where you got that from!
3. hmm...first, service....like GPRS is sooo expensive i can't even think about it...sms is still buggy...can you believe it? i don't even have an sms service right now!! cuz since they realised it was too buggy, they didn't include it in the new sim cards! and mine is new! reception is not so bad, except the busy parts of tehran...and during peak hours. oh...and we don't have voice mail yet. one other thing is that the mobile code is based on the location...like one city is 0912, another is 0913, and so on.
4. ok so you knew! i don't have a number! but i can say more than 50%. next comes nokia, then siemens, not so much SE and LG...though LG is very popular in iran, but in other products. there is another brand i never heard of, "pantech" which is making a lot of noise these days too. motorola is very rare here...except the latest one, which i have seen a few on the street.
5. as jaymo said, about 14 million.
6. as i said, i have no had much trouble with coverage...i have been to a few cities since three months ago that i came to iran, including a remote island, and i have had no problems with the coverage...it's similar to Kuala lumpur i can say.
amm...anything else?
Posted by arbitrabbit
Thanks a lot for the reply. You made my life a lot easier
Just a couple of questions actually.... This $1100 figure that you quote, is it official channel or unofficial one? (But even $500 is really expensive). I guess the prices will go down a bit from next January when the new operator, TurkCell starts operating.
Also, the price of the phone... is it with warranty or without? As in do you get a company warranty like in Europe or is it gray market?
The reason I asked about the coverage outside Tehran was so that I can get an idea about how big the market is.
Also I was reading that recently the national operator signed up around 6m people for a mobile connection within 10 days and everyone of those 6m will get a connection by the end of 2005. Is that true?
And one somewhat abstract question... is there any reason for Samsung to be popular besides the Farsi support? Are there any other features which make people go for Samsung rather than say LG, which has almost the same features and similar looking phones? And are Farsi phones popular in a particular age group or are they popular with everyone (even young people)? Iran afterall is a very young country.
P.S- Is there any IRC channel where I can actually chat with some Iranians?
[ This Message was edited by: arbitrabbit on 2004-07-01 18:42 ]
Posted by milad_sm
wow! didn't know about turkcell! some competition would be great!!
i hope some foreign ISP could come in as well! they are charging about $90 a month for a miserable 256kbps DSL!!
anyways, the figure is of course unofficial. but the rate is more or less the same everywhere...the difference is some places give you a cell as well.
the phone price is usually with warranty from official representatives of nokia or samsung, but gray market is also very very active! the difference compared to malaysia is that they WILL let you know that you are buying a phone w/out official warranty. no cheating there.
mostly ppl will go for the official warranty.
true..many ppl signed up for the new SIM cards, including myself! and...end of 2005 is the max time they have to wait...few batches will get their SIM cards earlier...like i 'll get mine next month! after about 4 months of waiting.
i am new to iran so i donno how samsung got popular at the first place, but mostly i say is VERY Strong advertisements carried by them and i think it can be somewhat political as well...
as iran and korea have pretty good ties...we have loads of korean cars in iran, Kia, Hyundai, Daewoo ...err...what else...?!?!
you compared samsung with LG?! how can you? i don't think LG is good, experience has proven that fact.
farsi phone are popular with the elderly i can say! they are not keen to learn englsh!
almost everyone i know uses english...but again, majority of iranians prefer farsi, why not!
about IRC....i don't chat actively anymore !! so i can't help you...
there are a few forums you can go...you can try chatting in english and see if they'll respond:
forum.persiantools.com
www.majidonline.com
www.barnamenevis.com
these are computer related forums, but they do have an open-discussion secition where you can talk about anything.
oh and.. www.psforums.org which is all about mobiles!
good luck!
oh...where are you from and ....what made you take this as your project?
Posted by arbitrabbit
Hey Milad
Thanks a ton for the information again. So effectively, this $500, which is the official figure I assume, doesn't include phones. Wow, you guys sure are paying a lot
Hey, btw are phones which give you eminders about Namaaz times, store texts of Koran etc. popular as well, maybe among the elderly? As far as youth ae concerened, I am sure you guys won't like such phones. I used to have an Iranian friend in engineering school, Baghram Dastmalchi. That guy was as western as they come.... as in traditional in thinking and western in outlook. A big time Pink Floyd fan
As far as where I am from, I am originally from India, right now doing my MBA in France. The reason I took this project is because I believe that along with India and China, the next phase of mobile telephony growth is going to come from middle east... I mean where else will you find people with enough money to buy the phones but Governments which just can't provide enough connections!!!! I was actually studying that why does Samsung kick ass in Iran and LG sucks big time (in mobile market) and what can LG do differently to gain some market share. So if you have a wish list of what you want from LG, go ahead
Thanks a lot for the forum links btw, will try those if I can figure out how to register

oright then!
now i get it!
those religious softwares are not on many people's phones!!
i personally have quran on my phone...well, it's nice to have something to read (in the appropriate moment, of course! not as a story book!). you can say i have strong faith! but many ppl in my age are into other stuff, like your friend! i like to keep a little path.
i don't think that religious softwares are a good market to invest on, right now....maybe when the phones are more common and cheaper so majority can have it.
it's interesting that they put such a limitation on turkcell...they still can be better off by providing better services.
Unless LG can come up with a SUPER phone, i would never buy it!! i will even use a nokia, but not an LG!

haha! well, my p800 is really making me sick these days...you never know!!
it's become like windows...if you install a wrong software, the whole system messes up and you have to format it to get it fixed.
and...nokia is too simple for me! i like phones with lotsa functions and hidden features!! motorola used to be good!!
Posted by JaymoFish
I picked up an LG today, LG U8110.
I played with the phone for a few weeks before buying (Fathers phone), it is probably the best 3G phone on the market.
It is compact, well designed, no software bugs and is very stable.
Far outpaces NEC, Motorola, Nokia and even Sony Ericssons efforts.
Yes, it is better than the Z1010, namely because it has bigger internal memory, smaller size and is stabler.
The Z1010 does have expandable memory and bluetooth but it costs a hell of a lot and is more of a Phase 1 3G phone.
I dont see why you hate LG Milad

oh boy!!
fine! i won't hate it! but i am not gonna buy it either!

I just finished my project so I thought I will post an update
I have recommended some changes to them... lets see if they implement them. If they do, even their GSM phones should become much better..... though somehow I had the feeling that by doing so, I was stepping on one too many feet.

arbitrabbit: welldone mate!
nice work!
bluboy, now why do you want to go and do that?!!
it'll just mess up your phone...
for sms, there is this arabic sms thing...which really sucks...but if you really have to, you can use that. for other things, i don't see a need to change to farsi....
amm...also, i don't know of a way to change it to farsi! i mean it shoul be in a form of an SIS file, but i haven't seen one.

Ok, so I found this site by entering my last name on google..... but anyways...
This seems totally cool, Iranians all over the world talking online; I love it!
My Dad left my mom and since then education about my culture has stopped; instead of Farsi, I know German and engish, and I have to be reminded of Iranian new year! Oh dear!
I was reading the message boards and was hurt, what is the deal with the Bush hating? I voted for him and helped out in the campaign, he is tough but he gets the job done without putting up with crap. And what he said about Iran being on the axis of evil is being taken out of context; he was talking about the government, not the people! Until everyone around the world stops with their stubbourn attitudes I will continue to pray in the name of Jesus that everyone sets their thick headed rivalries aside and takes a chill pill. Oh, and by the way President Bush is not a bastard; his parents were married long before he was born!
Much love to the Iranian community I adore so much!
