What is the difference???

The only thing I have found is the "£" is replaced with a "$". Has anyone else noticed any other differences?

If this has been discussed before (and I am sure it has) please accept my apologies.

Awfully sorry to be picky, but potato is spelt without an 'e'.

What does ANY of this have to do with the language on the P900?

Speak English Boy

Posted by imanuk
Ok, so is there any difference between US/UK P800 and P900 that requires a whole thread to discuss? Not having seen any Potato(e) refernces on it I doubt there can be anyhting to discuss...

Posted by wapchimp
I think this started as a serious query/thread.

Posted by imanuk
@orangeman - many do.

A more pedantically phrased question would have helped steer it in the hoped direction. But I'm not sure what that direction is?

Perhaps, someone can save us from the giddy, grammatical hieghts we are sure to soon be assailing, by closing this thread?

americans don't speek english

seriously though, i would expect the main differences to be in the area of spelling - centre vs. center, colour vs. color, replacing english z with american s in certain words (e.g summarize/summarise), and other grammatical atrocities.

on a side note, current linguistic theory is that the american accent is something akin to how british commoners spoke during elizabethan times. this of course raises certain questions - has the american spoken word devolved to that of an illiterate society? or has it become more authentically down-to-earth "english" than the english?

on another side note, the american constitution defines the national language as that which a majority of the population speaks - which means that in the next few decades spanish could well supplant english as the national language of the USA.

GRAMATTICAL ATROCITIES?!?!?

i doan know what you talking bout or something man.

You're using your culture as a 'measuring stick'; don't do that. That's equivalent to 'criticising' the Mandarin dialect because it is different than Cantonese.

case closed.

sucked in - gotcha!

i'm not using my culture as a measuring stick, just the knowledge of my native tongue. in point of fact the american spoken word is becoming a dialect of english, sufficient enough are the differences in expression and verancular (especially if spoken "english" and "american" continue to diverge - although this is becomming less likely in today's world of global communications). the written word still remains fairly closely aligned, with many of the differences brought about by differences in pronunciation.

oh - and the differences between mandarin and cantonese are fairly profound compared with what we are discussing here.

suffice it to say that poor grammar, especially among those who should know better, is a bug-bear of mine.
