Do you send e-mail from your T68 e-mail client? Which isp?

Hi all (USA users in particular),

I had been using my Verizon e-mail account to send mail (and pictures from the new MCA-20 communicam), from the T68i's built in E-mail client. The reason I specifically used (and only could use) Verizon, was, their SMTP server did not block the sending port(25) for off network sending (i.e., I could send mail through VoiceStream WAP/GPRS using the outside Verizon SMTP server). Now, Verizon has shut that abaility down. I now cannot send e-mail using any of my POP accounts (Earthlink, Verizon, Bellsouth, even hotmail blocks the feature)

I went to Europe, to eagerly try to take pictures with my new Communicam, to e-mail attachments to my loved ones. I had to sit down in an Internet cafe, to try to find a free SMTP server that allows sending outside of their own networks. After some 2 hours research, I found 2 that worked. One, called "hotpop", which was unreliable, and the other, was lycos.co.uk (not even US Lycos mail allows this), which worked well.

For the moment, I can use lycos.co.uk, until they disallow off network SMTP sending.

I want to know, who on this board sends e-mail through the T68 e-mail client, and which SMTP server do you use?

I am also told that VoiceStream is working on their own POP server for phones with built in clients. But, that is probably not imminent.

Thanks,

Jeff

I send from my t68
with Telenor Online e-mail.....

OK, but that is the E-mail client from the GSM providers' network you are on?

VoiceStream in the USA does not (yet) provide direct POP3/SMTP mail sending, this is the problem. They only provide e-mail thorugh their istram website, to receive POP3 mails.

you can view multi pop accounts and hotmail with anytimenow.

give em a try

Thanks for that info. I think anytimenow does not offer a smtp server. And vizzavi is only good for Vodafone users, no?

I found 2 other reliable servers for sending mail from the T68i.

One is www.myrealbox.com. Works very well, either with GPRS, or CSD, and thorugh any portal. I tried it thru VoiceStream WAP and GPRS, Ericsson WAP in the UK dial up, and WapHQ dial up in the UK.

Another is www.pobox.com. I signed up, and it pings well, but I haven't set it up on the phone yet. Pobox also has the ability to send on port 26, so if your carrier blocks port 25, this is a workaround.

The two above also offer mail forwarding, so even if you send thru them, the response can be forwarded where you wish.

Also, I think yahoo mail WILL work as an smtp mail server, but only if you sign up for the $29.99 a year version. For now, I will wait, to see if these others stay.

Jeff,

How did you set up you t68i with real box. I am getting a server not found error when I set it up with their parameters. can you give me the way you did it step by step.

thanks

Harley

Hi Harley,

I am not able to tell you this second, but when you entered the SMTP and POP3 servers, did you use numbers instead of names? You need to go to a DOS box, and ping the server names, and use the responded numbers. Otherwise, I will supply you with this later today.

i did not use the numbers, and i am not sure how to get the numbers. where is the dos box

I think what Jeff means is to go to a workstation (DOS/Windows or Mac) and 'ping' the server, i.e.:

C:\>ping hostname

where 'hostname' is the server you're looking for. that will give you a numeric internet address: 148.13.63.224 for example.

Hope that helps!

Jeff, I'm interested in getting this to work with myrealbox.com too!

Tedy.

Jeff is right,

I didn't realize there can be a problem with using not open relay SMTP servers when you're abroad. So maybe following list will help you:

I used hotpop constantly which worked perfectly fine, but then I switched to Cingular (big mistake, but I wanted there cheap GPRS), and I can’t even use e-mail on the phone!

Hotpop doesn't like attachments, though. I can send mail, but when I attach a picture from the Communicam, it craps out.

Try talk21, its free. I just got mine working on my T68m (tahnks to help from Cytech) and it works fine to send and receive.

Harley,

I had been using myrealbox for quite some time now.

It's been quite reliable.

POP server is 192.108.102.201
POP port is 110
SMTP servier is 192.108.102.204
SMTP port is 25

Once you sign up at their website, it should work over CSD on VoiceStream.

Harley,

Those settings above are what I use, too

JohnM,

It doesn't look like the talk21 is POP3/SMTP compliant, meaning you can't use the T68's built in e-mail client -- do you access that form the e-mail client, or from WAP access? . If it is POP3, and I can't see the settings, do have the POP3/SMTP settings? Having some more open SMTP servers in reserve can never hurt, given how they are all dissappearing.

Thanks,

Jeff

@jeff > talk21 is pretty good. I use the pop3/smtp email client on my T68 to access it with no problems. I can access it through WAP too, but prefer not to. The POP3 server is 194.73.242.51 POP3 port 110, and SMTP is 194.73.242.12 SMTP port 25

Jeff and GMG,

Thanks for the information on how to set up the email, it works great, I was wondering if you could tell me how to attach a picture after having taken one with the communicam.

Thanks

Harley

Hi Harley,

I am assuming you are asking about the newer MCA-20 Communicam. Well, once you snap a picture, the e-mail process with attachment is self explanitory. You just press the "send" option, after you click (as opposed to save, or whatever else it offers you), and the attachment automatically attaches, and you se tthe address, and send.

However, if you save the picture, it first will save on the communicam. If you want to send, you have to go to the picture, press the option button on the T68 (above the 1), then do a send.

If you copy or move the picture onto the phone, then when you are doing your e-mail, go down to the attachment part of the mail, and click on it, and all your pictures (and audio's) on the phone will come up, and just select the one you want.

thanks Jeff, also, is there any way to program the phone to notify you through a text message that you have new mail through that email service?

thanks again

If you mean the myrealbox mail, I have it set up to forward all incoming mails to my normal mailbox, so I never have to worry, if I e-mail a Communicam pic through the myrealbox server, that if they respond to that address, it will come to my normal jeffharris.com mailbox (which actually forwards to my AOL mailbox, which Voicestream integrates with very well.)

Understood?

Jeff

I send email both through realbox, using my carriers web settings, and also to prodigy here in Mexico, both through Telcel GPRS.

Hi,
Here in Mexico i´m having problems to config. my account in the built-in e-mail. I have a T68m with R2E006, and my operator is TELCEL. The POP3 and SMTP server that they are giving to me apparently is not working (148.253.168.53, port 110 and 25). The webclient for that mail is working and it's http://mail.itelcel.com
If i ping to that address, it gives me the 148.253.168.25. I´ve already tried that address in my settings but didn't work, so i thing that they are using different servers, but the server for POP3 and SMTP seems to be down.
Cheers.
