Man shot twice for refusing to give up his cellphone

a guy was shot twice early yesterday morning while crossing the Williamsburg Bridge for refusing to give up his cellphone:

Mr. Muchalski, who said he had woken up only 15 minutes earlier, tried to argue with the man, showing him that his backpack contained only CD’s and notebooks. He offered the man his rusty mountain bike, but the man quickly became fixated on Mr. Muchalski’s cellphone, which he refused to hand over, the police said. “Hey man, I’m a hard-working guy, I don’t make much money,” Mr. Muchalski said he told the man. He spoke to reporters from his bed at Bellevue Hospital Center, where he was in stable condition yesterday.
But what’s even crazier is that he got himself shot over such a crappy phone — Nokia’s 3390, which sells for about 15 bucks on eBay. Cops busted the culprit standing a few blocks away from the bridge with the bike.

Hey, it's not the actual item, it's the principle. One man's trash is another's treasure. I wouldn't give up any of my phones, not even the ones that are cracked across the screens. They've got sentimental value!

Posted by Cula
Agree, my phone is mine. And it would not be easy to give away for anny reason. But ewery thing has it's price, and I think my life would be a good price(maybe not for the p900).

Posted by Sammy_boy
I think it's probably the fact that he worked hard to buy that phone, and that it was his - and he wasn't going to give it up to some git who just wanted to take it from him! It doesn't matter if it's a knackered old 3310/90 or a brand new P900!

a gun can be a a pretty persuasive argument though.... i'd probably give it up

Have you ever been threatened from someone holding a gun?

It happened to me in Constantsa,Romania in 1994. And this was not for a mobile but for 5 USD. That amount of money 10 years ago was a fortune for someone.
Because this has happened to me I would give my belongings with no second thought. Trust me, your whole life passes in front of you in one second! And dont try any heroism. It aint worth it!

Life is beautiful to waste for any reason.

its worth carrying 'insurance' with you. something like a small axe or knuckle duster(lol). everyman has the right to stand up for himself..... i would

Posted by Vlammetje
which is fatser... the arm that swings the axe or the bullet?

Of course we could all go around carrying a gun.

But I know one thing: if I DID have a gun and I would ever be forced into a situation, I would use it. And somebody would die. And I do not think I could live with that.
So i choose not to carry a gun. Least the chances of me taking a life are a bit slimmer that way. And when mugged I just give up my stuff. They're only stuff. I'd fight till the last breath for the ppl dear to me though!

Posted by batesie
true i think everyone will agree that if its family/loved ones... the dark side will overcome your fear to protect them at all costs......

Posted by buckle247
lol, i would love to see anyone with knuckle dusters take out a person with a gun

80% of gun crime in london are fake or replica guns according to the metropolitan police.

Posted by Vlammetje
but would you take the risk.........?

Don't think i would want to risk it though, unless it looked fake with a big orange piece of plastic at the end of the barrel

A damn phone is just not worth it when ur life is in stake

Posted by batesie
ive worked hard for the things i have. if some scumbag loser thought he could try just walking up to me and take anything he wanted.... i would not let him. let them do it once, and they would keep doing it, to an old grandmother, a father with a heart condition.... you get my point.

So you would risk your LIFE just so that your personal items stay intact. Most people have worked hard for what they own, but i doubt many would risk there life to protect them.

Posted by batesie
if you are an able/fit adult, you should stand up to them and make the first move, its not that fact so much that theyd be running off with my phone, its the fact that there running off to find there next victim who might well be old and frail and dont have a chance.

Posted by buckle247
If they are unarmed it might be an option to stand up to them, but if they have a weapon, gun or knife, there is no point in risking your life, not many fit people would be willing or have the ablity to take on a maniac with a knife.

Posted by Vlammetje
let alone a maniac with a gun. I too work hard for my stuff and I'm proud to have it. I'm healthy and able enough to hit somebody should need be. But I won't get myself killed over a phone, or even my car. It's not worth it, as not only will I be dead but my family and bf will be traumatized (my dad may well be in a murderous spirit for that matter)... all that over a PHONE??!

it's only a phone. 30 euros will buy you a new one.

Posted by MEEUW
I wouldn't give up my phone, Hou cheap he is. It's not only the phone but think of the phonebook with all the girlls phonenr I have . I't my life-line
grz

Posted by batesie
unless they came face to face with a man who also had one.... most of them are chancer looking for a bit of cash for there next fix. i wouldnt think twice in a them or me situation.

Posted by Vlammetje
a 'them or me' situation is a 'dead or alive' situation in my dictionary.
Somebody stealing your phone, car-radio or wallet is not a dead or alive situation.

Ever been mugged?
Ever had somebody set a knife on your throat?
Lemme tell you: the first thing on your mind is not 'how to be a hero'... it's 'how to get out of this'

Posted by batesie
two different opinions, 2 different morals. been there would do the same again.

i actually got mugged at knifepoint at a parking lot somewhere last year! the f*cker told me to hand over my phone and wallet but i wasn't about to give up without a fight. everything happened so fast and all i cud remember was i kicked him real hard where the sun don't shine!! he got away with some cash and i was left with a deep cut on my hand, blood oozing out. it was nasty! the whole thing was very surreal, its like watching reality cop tv show or something, only not. and no, its not about being a hero or what, its just that when u are in that sorta situation, u kinda react to your instincts.
so i really feel for that guy... .

@mugger: I HOPE U BURN IN HELL!!!!!

Nice one !

Seriously tho,
yEah, granted, its only a NOkia, but NOT all of us are lucky enuf to own a P900 ok? The guy could have been poor and must have taken a long time to get enuf money to buy that phone. To u, or us for that matter, it may be a cheapo phone, but to the poor fella, it prolly meant blood and sweat ... Life ain't fair ... Muggers and all the other scum of the earth shud be put in a dark place, with flesh eating bugs and left to rot in their own excreament

Scumbags

I once got jumped for a T68i after leaving a club one night as the guy demanded the phone I went to offer it him but at the same time smashed it to the floor it busted into a thousand pieces. Ok so I lost the phone but at least I had the satisfication of knowing that neither did the scumbag getting it Infact he was so amazed that it gave me time to administer enough pain for him to remeber me with.

Still dodgy taking on some one who is armed in some way though

!

U smashed ur phone then smashed his face !? Cool !

Feel sorry for you dude, but would you act the same again, or next time would you hand over without a fight, as imagine if it had been your neck or wrist that had been cut, you could have been a lot worse off.

well, as the saying goes, once bitten twice shy. that incident makes me more alert to my surroundings now

buy a cheap phone

Posted by prodjsxb
Well if you wanna be a hero you can try this..

you hand him the phone with one hand, but look at him in the eye not his hand. As he watches the phone and is ready to take it from you, he doesnt have a chance at reacting to your other hand firmly grabbing and twisting the gun upward. As he looks at that and moves to defend himself, you then make a firm fist, drop your cell if you have to and aim squarely at this adams apple. Punch as hard as you can, as if you were trying to punch through it. You now have pretty well crushed his wind pipe. He will be too busy fighting to breathe and remain concious to notice that you have now taken the gun away and are aiming it squarely at his crotch. If the fuker' dies, so be it. You can decide wether you wanna pull the trigger.

So to all you asses that think crime pays, it also pays back. Pay back can be a bitch... There are various scenarios that are possible. But one thing that I find fun is whenever my buddies and I see someone trying to mug someone else or something similar, we sneak up and give that twat and his friends(if applicable) a beating they will never forget, and mug them instead. It really quite fun. More people should partake in that and make it a national past-time. I can almost guarantee crime like that will drop tenfold. I know it's down in my neighbour hood.

I could have a vertu phone... You hold a gun to my face and its yours, no questions asked.

Posted by batesie
as i said before metropolitan police say that 90% of london gun crime involves FAKE guns. people with real guns are in a higher money making business than just mugging phones...

Posted by punkserb
A gun i may not argue with. But i can defend myself from a knife. Even he i get cut its ok but i will know that he won't be breathing. I would have no problem killing such a person.
